How I Accidentally Bent My Best Friend - Chapter 18
She nervously licked her lips and whispered, “I’d like to.”
The class suddenly erupted in jeers, all mocking the little chubby boy.
“Chubby, didn’t you say Chen Yushu was going to be your wife in the future? Why didn’t she pick you?”
“Hahahaha, yeah, what’s going on?”
The chubby boy looked at her in disbelief, his eyes reddening with hurt.
Little Lu Wei slammed the desk. “Get up, stop dreaming. Chen Yushu is my wife now.”
This sent the whole class into another round of laughter.
After the chubby boy left, wounded, Lu Wei plopped down with a thud, like a proud peacock. She pulled out three brand-new notebooks from her bag, arranging them neatly one by one, then took out a pack of colored pens, dumping them all out and lining them up one by one on the desk.
Chen Yushu watched her series of actions curiously, her mouth slowly falling open in surprise.
But that wasn’t all. Lu Wei rummaged through her bag again and pulled out several differently shaped erasers, placing them in perfect order.
“Oh, and the ruler.”
However, the desk was already full. Lu Wei glanced at her, then pushed Chen Yushu’s books aside to make space before taking out her ruler, correction fluid, and other supplies, continuing her meticulous arrangement.
Anyone who didn’t know better would have thought she was setting up a stall to sell stationery.
Even the teacher couldn’t take it anymore and reminded her, “Lu Wei, class is about to start. Take out your textbook.”
Lu Wei gave everything one last check, nodded in satisfaction, and declared, “Wang Zhizhi says sharpening the axe won’t delay the chopping. Alright, now I’m ready to study.”
The next second, Lu Wei dug through her bag again, then turned to Chen Yushu, her eyes full of confusion. “Where’s my textbook?”
Suppressing a smile, Chen Yushu pushed her own book to the middle of the desk. “Let’s share for now.”
“Oh, fine.” Lu Wei sat up straight, focusing intently on the textbook.
Seeing this, Chen Yushu thought to herself, She actually seems pretty studious.
But within three minutes, she changed her mind.
As Chen Yushu listened attentively to the teacher’s explanation, her arm suddenly felt heavy, Lu Wei’s head had plopped onto it.
Her soft cheek rested on Chen Yushu’s hand as she dozed off, snoring lightly. Chen Yushu quickly nudged her. “Weiwei, wake up. Time to solve the problem.”
Lu Wei smacked her lips, propping her head up with one hand. “Right, I need to study.”
“Okay, so this question”
“Zzz, Zzz”
“Weiwei, don’t sleep. We haven’t solved the problem yet.”
“Weiwei”
“Weiwei”
And so, their life as desk mates began, lasting four whole years.
Occasionally chaotic, but mostly warm.
Chen Yushu’s originally gentle temperament gradually grew more irritable under Lu Wei’s influence. Yet, it was also because of Lu Wei that she rarely felt lonely anymore.
Her once dull and monotonous life now had a rainbow of colors.
At first, like Chen Yushu, Lu Wei had almost no other friends.
Chen Yushu was naturally reserved, making it hard for others to approach her, while Lu Wei simply disliked everyone equally, refusing to associate with them.
But when did things start to change?
One day during P.E. class, Lu Wei asked Chen Yushu to hold their spot while she went to fetch the badminton rackets. The playground was dotted with groups of students chatting and laughing, and standing alone, Chen Yushu was suddenly overwhelmed by loneliness, her eyes unconsciously filling with envy.
Lu Wei, returning just then, saw this and muttered unhappily, “Do you want lots and lots of friends too, just like them?”
She withdrew her gaze and nodded in undeniable agreement, “Mhm.”
Lu Wei handed her a badminton racket, muttering to herself, “What’s so great about a bunch of noisy people?”
“But it’s lonely without friends.”
Lu Wei pursed her lips and spoke with barely concealed pity, “Don’t I count as your friend?”
She lowered her head, somewhat dejected. “But when you leave, there’s no one left to play with me.”
“Then I won’t leave.” Lu Wei immediately grabbed her hand, her eyes sparkling as she looked at her.
“But you just left earlier.”
Lu Wei’s eyelids drooped instantly. “Fine, I get it.”
She didn’t know what Lu Wei had “gotten,” but a few days later, Lu Wei had a few new followers by her side and even made a point to introduce them to her.
“Her name is Chen Yushu. She’s my best friend.”
Those words were repeated for years.
Along with another phrase: “Chen Yushu, no matter how many friends you have, remember, I’m your best friend, okay?”
She never felt like she had many friends. Gradually, she stopped wanting anyone else.
Memories drifted further and further away on their own. Chen Yushu snapped back to reality, her chest aching faintly with only one thought she really, truly didn’t want to lose Lu Wei.
She didn’t even dare to imagine it.
That was why, at the age of budding emotions and fiery passion, she had been so cautious, treading as if on thin ice.
Time flew by, and the more than half-month-long military training finally came to an end.
“Is this class schedule for real? My cousin said college is all about lounging in the dorm, was he just messing with me?”
“Keep dreaming. That only happens junior or senior year.”
“Help! Biology, chemistry, environmental science, materials, the four infamous ‘pits’ they really don’t lie!”
“Who said life after the college entrance exam would be free from suffering?”
“Hahaha, pick the right major, and finals are like taking the gaokao all over again. Right now, I’m just praying our professors will be merciful and spare my sorry life during finals!”
Chen Yushu was also looking at the class schedule. Apart from a free Thursday afternoon, every other day was packed with classes, plus weekend labs.
The foreseeable future was suffocating at just a glance.
This tuition money was really paying off!
Just then, Lu Wei sent her a message, asking her to grab a meal and saying she was already waiting downstairs.
Chen Yushu picked up her phone and stepped onto the balcony. Looking down, she spotted Lu Wei immediately. Despite half a month under the sun, her skin still glowed porcelain-white.
Her ash-blue hair had faded considerably, cascading loosely down her back. Broad shoulders, a slender waist, long legs, and a perfect curve, just her silhouette alone was enough to make Chen Yushu’s heart race.
This won’t do, Chen Yushu thought. She needed to calm down.
Just as she was about to decline the meal invitation, Lu Wei called.
Lu Wei was one of the rare few people whose calls she didn’t mind in fact, she even looked forward to them when they couldn’t meet.
“Hey, Chen Yushu, didn’t you see my message? Come down and eat. I’m getting roasted alive out here.”
“Okay, I’ll be right down.” Her mouth moved faster than her brain.
After hanging up, Chen Yushu stared blankly at her phone. What was wrong with her?
But she’d already agreed. There was no way out now. She headed downstairs but turned back just after leaving the dorm, remembering something. She grabbed a parasol.
Lu Wei wore light makeup, her already flawless features now even more radiant. Everyone passing by the dorm couldn’t help but glance at her, though her icy expression made her seem utterly unapproachable.
Chen Yushu walked over with a hint of jealousy, tugging at the dangling tie of her top.
When Lu Wei looked up and saw her, her brows instantly relaxed, her entire face lighting up with radiance. Taking advantage of her long arms, she pulled Chen Yushu into a tight embrace. “What’s going on with you? You’ve been replying to my messages so slowly lately. You’re not studying, what have you been up to?”
“Can’t I have my own life?” Chen Yushu opened her umbrella and struggled slightly, not wanting to be too close to her.
Lu Wei snorted and said domineeringly, “Then can’t you just add me into your life?”
That one sentence sent ripples through Chen Yushu’s heart again so effortlessly.
She could only change the subject. “By the way, have you checked your class schedule yet?”
Lu Wei: “Not yet. I hate classes the most just looking at those textbooks makes me sick.”
“Log in to your account. I’ll check for you.”
Lu Wei immediately rested her head on Chen Yushu’s shoulder, nuzzling against her and whining, “Looking at this during mealtime is such a mood killer.”
Chen Yushu tried to push her away but failed, so she pinched Lu Wei’s cheek instead. “If you don’t check it, then no food for you.”
“You’re so cruel,” Lu Wei said, lifting her head and giving her a pitiful look.
Chen Yushu responded with an indifferent “Hmm,” snatched her phone, and entered the account. “Password.”
Lu Wei grumbled, “The last six digits of my ID.”
After logging into the academic system, Chen Yushu found Lu Wei’s schedule and carefully scanned through it. She then pulled out her own phone to compare and discovered they shared a P.E. class on the same field, no less.
An uncontrollable joy bubbled up inside her.
Suddenly, she felt someone grab her arm and pull her back. Losing her balance for a moment, her back pressed against Lu Wei’s chest.
“You shouldn’t walk while looking at your phone. If I hadn’t pulled you, you would’ve tumbled down already.”
Lu Wei’s voice came from behind her neck, and Chen Yushu’s heart skipped a beat. Looking at the flight of stairs ahead, she couldn’t help but feel a surge of fear.
“Scared stiff?” Lu Wei wrapped an arm around her shoulder, tilting her head to look at Chen Yushu’s profile. “Don’t worry, I’m here. I won’t let you fall.”
Chen Yushu felt her cheek almost touching Lu Wei’s, warmth radiating between them, raising the temperature of her skin. She instinctively hunched one shoulder and leaned forward slightly to avoid the closeness. “Got it. Let me go.”
“Give me your phone. No more looking at it while walking.”
Chen Yushu handed Lu Wei’s phone back and pocketed her own. “Which cafeteria are we going to?”
Lu Wei: “Let’s go to the fourth one. I have a few packages to pick up anyway.”
Chen Yushu: “Okay.”
After the meal, Chen Yushu stood outside the delivery station waiting for Lu Wei. A few minutes later, Lu Wei emerged with four or five packages in her arms. Chen Yushu stepped forward, intending to help carry some.
Lu Wei simply dropped the boxes on the ground and checked her phone. “Wait, there are a few more.”
Five minutes later, Lu Wei came out with another five or six packages.
Chen Yushu looked at the pile of deliveries at her feet, placing her hands on her hips. “This is what you meant by ‘a few’?”
Lu Wei grinned, her peach-blossom eyes curving into crescents. “Just three more, I swear.”
“You!”
Before Chen Yushu could finish, Lu Wei darted back into the delivery station, leaving her to stare helplessly at the mountain of packages. She glanced around, hoping to find a cart to borrow.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t even a skateboard in sight, let alone a cart.
So when Lu Wei’s face reappeared, Chen Yushu wished she could stab her with a glare.
Lu Wei pursed her lips, guiltily lowered her head, and shuffled over with exaggerated coyness. She theatrically took Chen Yushu’s hand and said in a high-pitched voice, “Dear Shushu, I love you the most. Please help me out, won’t you? Shushu”
Chen Yushu immediately pulled her hand back, goosebumps rising all over. “Get lost. Get it yourself.”
Lu Wei pouted, her big eyes blinking innocently silence spoke louder than words.
“How am I supposed to help you? Do I have eight hands?” Chen Yushu gritted her teeth.
Lu Wei stroked her chin. “Let me think of a way.”
A few minutes later, she walked over to the plastic bag vending machine, yanked out several bags in one go, stuffed the delivery boxes inside, and then hung them one by one on Chen Yushu’s hands.
Not a single finger was spared.
“Dear Shushu, let’s go”
Unable to just drop everything and leave, Chen Yushu could only respond with an eye-roll.
After accompanying Lu Wei all the way to her dorm building, Lu Wei still wouldn’t let her go, clinging to her and pleading, “Dear Shushu, as the saying goes, ‘see a guest off to the west”
“It’s ‘see Buddha off to the west,’ you illiterate.” Chen Yushu couldn’t hold back and burst out laughing. “Hurry up and lead the way.”
“Hehe, okay.”
Chen Yushu shook her head with a smile and followed her into the dorm building. Suddenly, she overheard someone say, “Look at them, dating must be nice, being able to go in and out of the dorm together.”
