How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 99
At that moment, Bai Juntang’s breathing was so heavy she could hear it herself. Before making the call, she had thought about it over and over again.
She wanted to ask Cheng Wan what she really meant. What issue could only be solved by divorce? Was it really just because she had never said the words “I love you” that Cheng Wan was treating her this way?
Bai Juntang admitted that, in the beginning, she had no real feelings for Cheng Wan. She turned a blind eye to her family matters, believing the Cheng family were all the same kind of people. Back then, she only helped Cheng Wan because of Sui Sui. But over time, she realized Cheng Wan was different from the others. She was not like those people. So Bai Juntang was willing to get to know her, to stay by her side.
She was good with words, but her personality was painfully stubborn. Just like her mother, she had a sharp tongue and a hard heart. Even if the world ended, her pride would probably still be intact.
That was how stubborn she was.
So when she heard Cheng Wan’s words on the phone, she was so furious her head started spinning.
“What is that supposed to mean?” she snapped. Her vision was dark, and her brain buzzed. She had been under stress for too long and hadn’t rested at all.
“It means exactly what you heard,” Cheng Wan replied. “I want a divorce. We were only together so that Sui Sui could be born safely. Now that she’s here, she has nothing to do with me anymore.”
“Nothing to do with you? She has half your blood. How can you say that?”
Cheng Wan remained silent.
“I always thought you were different from your adoptive parents,” Bai Juntang said. “I thought you were gentle and well-behaved. But now you’re saying you don’t even want your own daughter? Do you have a heart?”
There was no response from the other end of the line. That silence only made Bai Juntang even angrier.
“I’m asking you a question. Is this how you plan to talk about it? Just say it over the phone and be done?”
She was furious.
“You keep saying it’s my fault. That I didn’t make promises to you. And because of that, you’re just going to abandon your daughter? Then how are you any different from your birth mother?”
Cheng Wan shut her eyes tightly and lowered her head without saying a word.
Bai Juntang had never been this angry. Cheng Wan had never heard her lose control like this. She couldn’t stop thinking about what Bai Juntang had just said. She had left Sui Sui behind. How was that any different from the woman who had once abandoned her?
Deep down, Cheng Wan knew the answer. She was just like her mother. They were both cruel women.
Bai Juntang was shaking with rage. Her heart pounded painfully in her chest. After yelling at Cheng Wan, she grabbed her phone and threw it against the wall. It shattered instantly, pieces flying across the floor.
“Unbelievable,” she shouted. She tossed the divorce papers on the ground as well and yelled toward the empty room, “I don’t understand this at all. You’re completely unreasonable!”
She swept everything off the table. Whatever could be broken was broken. She had never known she could be so out of control.
She didn’t understand. Even if Cheng Wan couldn’t stay for her, shouldn’t she stay for Sui Sui?
Sui Sui was such a sweet little girl. Cheng Wan had once held her for an entire day without wanting to let go.
Bai Juntang truly believed they were in love. They had a baby together. She thought this peaceful, happy life would continue forever. But she hadn’t expected it all to fall apart so suddenly.
The noise from upstairs was so loud it felt like the house might collapse. The nanny didn’t know what had happened. She held a terrified Sui Sui in her arms and rushed downstairs.
Bai Weilan and Aunt Pei stood in the living room, looking toward the second floor. The crashing and shouting made their faces darken with concern.
“What’s going on?” Aunt Pei asked, her voice full of worry. “Wasn’t she supposed to call Cheng Wan and talk things out calmly? What happened?”
Bai Weilan frowned. She didn’t need to ask to know exactly how the conversation had gone.
She suddenly had a bit of admiration for Cheng Wan. For someone so quiet and soft-spoken, she had managed to push Bai Juntang into a full-blown breakdown with just a few words. It was like they were destined to clash.
“It’s nothing,” Bai Weilan said as she gently took Sui Sui from the nanny’s arms. The baby was still crying. She patted her back softly. “Poor child. Neither of your mothers is making this easy.”
She let out a long sigh and said to Aunt Pei, “Call Xiaowei and ask her to come over. I have some work for her to do.”
Aunt Pei asked, “Are you sending her to find Cheng Wan?”
Holding Sui Sui in her arms, Bai Weilan replied helplessly, “Let her keep an eye on things for now. One day, Juntang will come to her senses and realize her wife is gone. Then she’ll throw another fit.”
Aunt Pei looked a little more relaxed and went off to make the call.
Bai Weilan gently rocked the child and sighed again, saying nothing more.
Cheng Wan stared at the phone after hanging up. Her heart felt heavy and unsettled.
Bai Juntang had never yelled at her before. Their relationship had always been calm. She never thought their first fight would be this explosive.
Her stomach burned. The water she drank earlier had done nothing to help. The pain was so sharp it made her want to cry.
When the room phone rang, Cheng Wan paid for three more days, ordered food delivery, and bought some medicine online.
She took painkillers with her meal, but they didn’t help much. That night, she woke up several times in pain. Every time she opened her eyes, she felt lost. She didn’t know where she was or what time it was.
She felt like the whole world had abandoned her or maybe nothing had ever really changed.
Over the three days she stayed at the hotel, Cheng Wan developed a low-grade fever. Fortunately, it wasn’t serious. She went to a small community clinic nearby. When the doctor learned she had just given birth, they carefully prescribed medication that was safe for her and told her to go back and rest.
By the fourth day, the fever had finally gone down, but her body still felt weak and exhausted.
Cheng Wan stayed in bed for a full week because of her illness. During that time, no one came to see her, and no one called. She had no idea whether Bai Juntang had written her name on the other section of the divorce application. She also didn’t know where she should go next.
Each day blurred into the next. The only way Cheng Wan could keep track of time was by checking the calendar on her phone. It had only been one week.
The weather was getting colder. Although the rain had stopped, the temperature had dropped below ten degrees Celsius. The jacket she had brought from the Bai household was clearly too thin. Just stepping outside made her shiver uncontrollably.
On the weekend, Cheng Wan decided to buy a couple of winter coats. She invited Chang Le to join her.
That day, Chang Le wore a snow-white beret, a khaki coat over a thermal shirt, and wide-leg jeans. When she walked up to Cheng Wan, looking bright and cheerful, Cheng Wan almost didn’t recognize her.
“You look amazing today,” Cheng Wan said with a smile. “But aren’t you cold, wearing so little in this weather?”
“It’s not as light as it looks. My jeans and shirt are both lined, and my coat is padded too. I’m warm,” Chang Le replied as she linked arms with Cheng Wan. “I didn’t go to Sui Sui’s full-month banquet last week. Today, whatever you want to eat is on me. Think of it as my apology.”
Cheng Wan smiled but didn’t argue with her.
They wandered around the mall for a while, and that was when Cheng Wan learned that Chang Le had been promoted. She had gone from being an entry-level employee to a client manager. Now she was responsible for screening client information for Director Zhou and maintaining relationships with high-end customers.
Chang Le held her purse proudly and said, “My salary went up by several thousand. The job isn’t stressful, and it’s respectable. I sit in the office every day with a cup of coffee. I feel like a queen.”
Cheng Wan looked at her with admiration. “That’s great.”
Chang Le beamed. “It’s all thanks to Miss Bai. She got me this dream job.”
At the mention of Bai Juntang, Cheng Wan’s expression dimmed slightly. Fortunately, Chang Le was still caught up in her excitement and didn’t notice the shift.
They walked into a casual restaurant in the mall, a place serving Xinjiang-style cuisine that looked fresh and inviting. After ordering a few dishes, Chang Le finally settled down to chat properly.
“How have you been lately?” she asked, sipping her tea. “You’ve looked a bit off since we met today. Are you still not fully recovered?”
Cheng Wan shook her head, holding the warm cup in her hands to stay warm. She had been sick, and her clothes weren’t thick enough. Her whole body had been cold for days. The warmth from the tea was the only thing that helped a little.
“I’m fine,” she said softly. “I’ve mostly recovered. Besides, the baby doesn’t need me anymore.”
Chang Le smiled. “Miss Bai really cares about you. She’s a great Alpha.”
Cheng Wan lowered her gaze. After a long pause, she said quietly, “We’re divorced.”
Chang Le nearly spat out her tea.
“We weren’t really right for each other,” Cheng Wan explained. “I brought it up last week.”
Chang Le was stunned, eyes wide. “What? That’s so sudden. I thought you two were doing really well. How can you just get divorced like that?”
Cheng Wan didn’t respond. It was too complicated to explain, and Chang Le was a kind, simple person. She didn’t want to burden her with everything.
Chang Le became anxious. “And Miss Bai just agreed to it? She didn’t try to stop you?”
Cheng Wan thought for a moment. She supposed you could call it an attempt to stop her, but it ended in a shouting match. It wasn’t much different from not trying at all.
When Chang Le learned that Cheng Wan had left the Bai family with nothing—not the money, not the child, just a few sets of clothes—she was furious.
“You never really know someone, do you?” Chang Le fumed. “That’s so cruel. Use you, then toss you aside? Heartless!”
Cheng Wan took a sip of tea and calmly explained, “It was my decision. And it’s not like I walked away empty-handed. I did take some money.”
Still unhappy, Chang Le leaned in seriously and asked, “Did you call me out today because you want backup? I can get people together for you. I have seventeen cousins living in the city, and a bunch of old classmates and friends. I can have more than twenty people ready in no time. We’ll storm her house.”
She even made a throat-slashing gesture with a dead-serious look on her face.
Cheng Wan looked at her helplessly. “No, I didn’t call you to cause trouble. I just haven’t talked to anyone in a long time. I wanted someone to keep me company.”
Chang Le couldn’t take it. She immediately scooted closer on the bench and wrapped her arm around Cheng Wan’s. “Don’t be sad. There are plenty of Alphas in the world. You’re beautiful and kind. If Bai Juntang can’t see that, then she’s just blind.”
Cheng Wan felt a little lighter hearing those words. The heaviness of the past week finally began to fade. At that moment, the food arrived. She had originally asked Chang Le out just to eat and shop. Now she finally smiled and said, “Let’s eat first.”
