How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 91
Little Sui Sui had been running a fever all night, but her spirits were surprisingly good. Even the doctor praised her, saying she didn’t seem like a premature baby at all. She was both healthy and lively.
Although the doctor had kind words, the truth was that Sui Sui was still sick. She felt unwell throughout the day, looking weak and sluggish.
Cheng Wan stayed by her side in the hospital the entire day, only stepping away when Bai Juntang arrived after work.
The curtains in the hospital room were drawn, letting in only a faint glow from outside. Babies were sensitive to sunlight, so the room remained dim and quiet.
“You’re back?” Cheng Wan looked up when she saw Bai Juntang walk in. “Was work busy?”
“It was the same as always. Nothing special.” Bai Juntang walked over and looked at Sui Sui lying on the bed. The tiny baby had her eyes closed, sleeping peacefully. Although she hadn’t even reached her one-month mark, her eyelashes were already thick and long, like tiny brushes resting on her cheeks.
The nanny glanced up and said softly, “She’s been feeling unwell all day. She just fell asleep a little while ago.”
Bai Juntang nodded, then turned to Cheng Wan. “What would you like for dinner? My mom and the others should be up soon. Let’s go eat out for a bit. Staying here all day can be pretty dull.”
Cheng Wan shook her head. She was too worried about Sui Sui and didn’t have much of an appetite anyway.
Bai Juntang gave a helpless smile. “You and my mom are just alike. She didn’t want to go out either and just grabbed something simple from the hotel.”
Cheng Wan kept her head down, staring at nothing in particular. After a while, she said, “The doctor wants her to stay for two more days. I plan to stay here tonight to take care of her.”
“Alright,” Bai Juntang replied without argument. She knew how worried Cheng Wan was. Last night, Cheng Wan couldn’t sleep at all, tossing and turning the whole time. Bai Juntang noticed it, but she was also concerned that if Sui Sui got better, Cheng Wan might end up getting sick from exhaustion. So she gently reminded her, “I’ll ask Aunt Pei to stay with you tonight and help take care of Sui Sui. She’s doing much better now, so don’t worry too much.”
Cheng Wan nodded. She looked up at Bai Juntang and reached out to hold her hand, intertwining their fingers.
“It’s getting late. You should head home and rest,” she said with a gentle smile. “I can take care of her here tonight.”
Looking at Cheng Wan’s smile, Bai Juntang quickly glanced at the nanny, who wasn’t paying attention, then leaned down and gave her a quick kiss on the lips before whispering, “I’ll get you both something to eat before I leave. I’ll stay a little longer and spend some time with Sui Sui too.”
Cheng Wan blushed and gave a soft nod without saying anything else.
It was after nine at night when Bai Juntang finally left the hospital. When she got home, Bai Weilan was sitting at the dining table, eating porridge.
“You’re back,” Bai Weilan said as she spooned some porridge into her mouth. “How’s Sui Sui doing?”
“She’s doing well. The doctor just wants to observe her a bit longer. There’s no rush to discharge her.” Bai Juntang walked over to the table and glanced at the porridge and pickles. “Did Aunt Pei make this?”
“No. She left for the hospital after dinner. I made it myself,” Bai Weilan said proudly. “I haven’t cooked in years. The last time I made porridge was for your mom. Feels like it was just yesterday, but it’s been so many years.”
She took another sip, then seemed to fall into silence, lost in her memories.
Bai Juntang pulled out a chair and sat across from her. She looked at her mother and said, “Let Cheng Wan stay with Sui Sui tonight. She didn’t sleep well last night.”
“A mother who sleeps well while her child is sick? I’d be worried if she did.” Bai Weilan replied calmly. “Let her stay. I can’t pull all-nighters anymore. Age really doesn’t give anyone a choice.”
Bai Juntang propped her chin in her hand and grabbed a small pickled cucumber from the plate, crunching loudly as she chewed.
Bai Weilan glanced at her. “If you’ve got nothing better to do, go get some rest. Why are you sitting there watching me eat? I didn’t make this porridge for you.”
“Mom,” Bai Juntang said seriously, “You know Cheng Wan’s past. She didn’t grow up with parents. Her adoptive family didn’t treat her well either. She doesn’t really understand how to be part of a family. If she doesn’t know how to get along with you sometimes, I hope you can try to be more patient.”
“When have I not been patient?” Bai Weilan said as she took another bite of pickles. Her voice remained calm. “I’m staying here for Sui Sui. You two can do whatever you want, as long as you don’t get in the way of me spoiling my granddaughter. Just don’t hover around me.”
Bai Juntang grinned. “Then how about we visit Sui Sui together tomorrow?”
“She’s my granddaughter. If I don’t see her, who will?” Bai Weilan snapped. “Why are you so chatty tonight? If you’re bored, go wash the dishes. Just looking at you makes me lose my appetite.”
She actually got up and walked away, leaving her half-finished bowl of porridge behind. Bai Juntang looked at it, sighed, and took it to the kitchen to wash.
Over the next few days, it felt like the whole family had moved into the hospital.
Even Aunt Pei couldn’t help but joke, “She’s not even a month old and already being spoiled like this. When she grows up and asks for the moon, are you going to try and give it to her?”
Bai Weilan responded seriously, “We may not be able to give her the moon, but we can get her a star.”
Aunt Pei rolled her eyes but continued gently patting Sui Sui to help her fall asleep.
Bai Juntang looked around the room. Everyone was doting on Sui Sui. Honestly, none of them had any right to talk. They were all equally softhearted, including her and Cheng Wan. Before, they still managed to hold back a little. But ever since Sui Sui got sick, they completely lost control.
Cheng Wan watched them all fuss over Sui Sui and felt a warmth in her heart. For the first time, she truly felt what a family was supposed to be.
Just then, the doctor came in for a follow-up visit. He smiled when he saw how full the room was and asked Aunt Pei to lay Sui Sui down so he could do a proper check-up.
After examining her, the young doctor said, “She’s recovering very well. She can go home today. Just make sure to keep her warm. Spring and fall are flu seasons, so avoid crowded places. Let her get some sunlight on the balcony and make sure she gets enough calcium.”
He gave a few more instructions before asking them to begin the discharge process.
Aunt Pei was overjoyed. Holding Sui Sui in her arms, she couldn’t stop smiling. “We’re going home, sweetheart!”
Whether Sui Sui understood or not was unclear, but she giggled along with Aunt Pei, her eyes squinting from the smile.
Bai Juntang arranged for two cars to take everyone home. Once they arrived, the nanny and Aunt Pei immediately took Sui Sui upstairs.
Bai Weilan glanced at the messy house and frowned. “No one’s cleaned in days. Look how filthy it is.”
“I’ll clean up a bit,” Cheng Wan offered.
“You?” Bai Weilan looked at her with a hint of disapproval. “You were up all-night taking care of Sui Sui. Go rest. Someone else will clean.”
Bai Juntang didn’t want Cheng Wan doing any chores either. She was still recovering and should have been pampered, not working. She had already done so much in the hospital, and now that they were home, she needed proper rest.
“Let someone else handle it,” Bai Juntang said gently, rubbing Cheng Wan’s cheek. Her skin, once fair, was now pale and dull. “You haven’t been sleeping properly. If your body doesn’t recover well, it could lead to long-term problems. You don’t want back pain every time it rains, do you?”
Cheng Wan looked worried. “Is it really that serious? I’ve just been a little tired lately.”
“Listen to Mom for once. Come on, I’ll take you upstairs to rest.” Bai Juntang turned to let Bai Weilan know, then carefully guided Cheng Wan up the stairs.
Just as they were about to reach their bedroom, Cheng Wan suddenly wanted to check on Sui Sui. She had only glanced in her direction when Bai Juntang pulled her into their room.
“What are you doing…”
Cheng Wan frowned, clearly displeased. “I just wanted to hold Sui Sui for a little while. Why did you drag me away?”
Bai Juntang closed the door and gently pinched Cheng Wan’s chin. “If you hold Sui Sui now, will you still feel like resting?”
Cheng Wan had no choice but to look up at her and sighed helplessly. “Bai Juntang, why are you acting like a child? Are you actually jealous?”
Bai Juntang was slightly caught off guard. She leaned in and looked at Cheng Wan closely. “You think I’d be jealous of my own daughter?”
Cheng Wan smiled, her eyes curving into soft crescents. She leaned forward and kissed her. “I think you are.”
“If you say I am, then I am.” Bai Juntang didn’t deny it. She moved closer and brushed her lips against Cheng Wan’s. “One kiss, and then it’s time for you to go to bed.”
Cheng Wan closed her eyes and leaned back against the door as their lips met. Her hands unconsciously wrapped around Bai Juntang’s shoulders, returning the kiss with warmth and affection.
Thankfully, Bai Juntang remembered that Cheng Wan needed rest. After a little tenderness, she led her to the bed and gently coaxed her to lie down.
She drew the curtains, tucked the blanket around Cheng Wan, and brushed her forehead softly. “I’ll step out for now, so you can sleep without being disturbed.”
Back in their familiar room, Cheng Wan felt both physically and emotionally relaxed. Once Bai Juntang left, she finally closed her eyes and tried to sleep.
But maybe it was because she had been too exhausted lately, or because she missed Sui Sui too much, Cheng Wan couldn’t fall into a deep sleep. She kept tossing and turning, thinking about the baby. After nearly half an hour of restlessness, she gave up and sat up in bed.
If she couldn’t sleep, she might as well check on Sui Sui.
She pulled on her coat, stepped into her fluffy slippers, and quietly opened the bedroom door. When she reached Sui Sui’s room and peeked inside, she saw the nanny soothing the baby to sleep. The nanny looked up when she heard the door and met Cheng Wan’s gaze.
“Ma’am,” the nanny whispered, “Sui Sui just fell asleep after a full feeding. If you’d come a few minutes earlier, you could have held her.”
Cheng Wan walked in and knelt beside the crib. Looking at the tiny sleeping bundle, she smiled faintly and said, “She’s asleep now, so I won’t disturb her. Let her rest.”
The nanny nodded and smiled. “Just a moment ago, Madam Bai called the other Madam downstairs. I think they’re discussing registering Sui Sui’s household and choosing a name. Do you want to go take a look?”
Naming her?
Cheng Wan thought for a moment. Since Sui Sui was nearing one month old, it was time to officially register her and give her a name. She had been so busy she almost forgot. Thankfully, Bai Juntang and the others hadn’t.
Curious, Cheng Wan quietly made her way downstairs and stopped at the study door. Just as she raised her hand to knock, she heard her name mentioned from inside.
“I don’t think it’s necessary to register Sui Sui under Cheng Wan’s household,” Bai Weilan said. Her voice carried through the slightly ajar door. “Her last name is Bai. She should be on your household registry.”
“It’s all the same whose registry she’s on. Right now, aren’t we talking about her name?” Bai Juntang sounded annoyed. “Naming her is something we should wait and discuss with Cheng Wan once she wakes up.”
Bai Weilan seemed confused. “What’s there to discuss? I’ve already prepared a list of names. Just pick one. As for the registry… Cheng Wan is on her own. She doesn’t have any property or a business under her name. If Sui Sui is registered with you, she’ll have access to better schools.”
Bai Juntang was clearly unhappy. “I said we’d wait until Cheng Wan wakes up to talk about it. This is a family matter. Why are we keeping it from her?”
Bai Weilan looked at her daughter’s frustrated face and chuckled. “So now you care about your Omega? Wasn’t it you who told me you weren’t interested in a woman like her, and that you only kept her around until she gave birth, then planned to keep the child and get rid of the mother?”
She paused for a second, then added, “Have you forgotten what you said?”
Bai Juntang sighed. She had indeed thought that way in the beginning, but things had changed a long time ago. She couldn’t really blame her mother for bringing it up. Back then, she truly had been heartless, and the phrase “keep the child, not the mother” had come straight from her mouth.
“Fine, I admit it,” Bai Juntang said quietly. “I did say that.”
