How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 90
As soon as Bai Juntang entered the hospital, she was stunned by the crowd in the lobby. She had never imagined that a children’s hospital could be so packed. Everywhere she looked, there were kids being carried, some with IV drips attached, some crying softly in their parents’ arms. The farther she walked, the more complicated her emotions became.
When she finally reached the hospital room, she saw Cheng Wan sitting silently in a chair.
“How is she doing?” Bai Juntang walked over to the hospital bed. Sui Sui was lying there, so small against the large white bed that she seemed even tinier than usual.
Bai Weilan was sitting beside the bed with the nanny. They were gently wiping Sui Sui’s hands and feet. Without even lifting her head, Bai Weilan replied, “She has a fever. The doctor suggested starting with physical cooling. We’ll wait and see if she needs medication later.”
Because Sui Sui was so young, the doctors were very cautious and didn’t want to prescribe medicine unless necessary. They recommended trying alcohol wipes and sponge baths first. If the fever didn’t go down, then they would consider giving her a fever-reducing injection.
Looking at Sui Sui’s flushed cheeks, Bai Juntang finally began to feel what it meant to be a mother. She walked over and gently touched her daughter’s little face.
Her skin was soft and hot, like a freshly steamed bun.
Bai Juntang let out a quiet sigh and tried to comfort her mother. “It’s good we brought her to the hospital. Preemies tend to have weaker immune systems. With proper care, she’ll be fine.”
Bai Weilan didn’t say anything. Her heart ached for her granddaughter, but all she could do was sigh quietly.
After watching Sui Sui for a while, Bai Juntang remembered Cheng Wan. She turned and looked at the woman sitting nearby. Cheng Wan was still staring at Sui Sui, but when Bai Juntang looked her way, she gently turned her head aside.
It was already getting late. Bai Juntang looked around and asked, “Has anyone eaten yet? If not, I’ll go out with Cheng Wan and bring something back.”
Bai Weilan nodded. “You two can go. There’s not much you can do here right now anyway. Just bring back something light to eat.”
Cheng Wan looked up at Bai Juntang, then stood up and followed her out of the room.
The hospital hallways were still busy with people, and children were everywhere. Bai Juntang held Cheng Wan’s hand as they walked to a nearby restaurant. There, they ordered four simple boxed meals.
While they waited for the food to be packed, Cheng Wan looked just as downcast as before. Bai Juntang glanced at her and felt a twinge of pain in her heart.
“What’s wrong? You’ve looked like this all day.” She sat beside Cheng Wan and gently rubbed her cheek.
Cheng Wan shook her head, then grabbed Bai Juntang’s hand and looked at her with a worried expression. “Are all preemies this fragile? She seemed fine when I went to take a nap. How did she end up with a fever all of a sudden?”
She remembered how Sui Sui had seemed off that morning, with her blank stare and low energy. If she had just been a little more careful, she might have noticed the signs earlier and prevented Sui Sui from suffering like this.
At the hospital, it was Bai Weilan and the nanny who handled everything. They contacted the doctor, registered, and rushed around. All Cheng Wan could do was hold Sui Sui and wait. She felt like she couldn’t help with anything at all.
Just thinking about that made her dizzy. She hadn’t even managed to give birth to Sui Sui properly. Now she couldn’t even take care of her the right way.
Bai Juntang noticed how low she felt. She gently held Cheng Wan’s face and kissed her on the cheek.
“Babies get sick easily. This isn’t your fault.” She pulled Cheng Wan into a hug and softly comforted her. “You’ve already done your best. But some things are just beyond anyone’s control. Look at the hospital. There are so many children sick here. It’s normal.”
Cheng Wan held onto Bai Juntang’s shirt tightly. She understood the logic, but her heart still felt heavy and full of guilt.
Bai Juntang wrapped her arms around her and gently held her hand.
“Why are your hands so cold?” she asked with concern. “Didn’t you bring an extra layer when we left the house?”
Cheng Wan shook her head. “We left in a hurry. I didn’t bring anything.”
Bai Juntang rubbed her hands to warm them up, then took off her own jacket and draped it over Cheng Wan’s shoulders.
The scent of Bai Juntang’s body wash and pheromones filled the air. It was familiar and calming. Cheng Wan felt comforted. She realized it had been a long time since she had gotten close enough to Bai Juntang to smell her scent. Ever since Sui Sui was born, they had both been busy in their own ways. She couldn’t even remember the last time they had shared pheromones.
After rubbing Cheng Wan’s hands and cheeks until they were warm, Bai Juntang picked up the food and brought it back to the hospital.
Four adults caring for one baby was too much. Bai Weilan arranged for herself and the nanny to stay and watch over Sui Sui. She told Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan to come back the next day.
By the time they returned home, it was already past ten at night. Aunt Pei was still awake, sitting in the living room with the other nanny. When she heard the door open, she quickly got up to greet them.
“How is she?” Aunt Pei asked anxiously. “What’s going on with Sui Sui? I called Madam Bai, but she only spoke for a moment before hanging up.”
“She’s okay,” Bai Juntang said calmly. “Just a mild fever.”
Aunt Pei still didn’t understand. “But if it’s just a fever, why did she need to be hospitalized?”
“The doctor didn’t want to use medication right away,” Bai Juntang explained. “They’re trying to bring the fever down naturally first. If that doesn’t work overnight, then they’ll try medicine. That’s why she’s staying in the hospital for observation.”
Aunt Pei wasn’t sure whether to feel relieved or more anxious. After thinking for a moment, she said, “But Madam Bai doesn’t know how to take care of a baby. And doesn’t she have work tomorrow? Let me go instead. She should rest.”
But Bai Juntang replied, “My mom is very healthy. And she’s so concerned about Sui Sui that even if you went, she wouldn’t come back. Let’s wait until tomorrow. For now, just get some rest.”
Though Aunt Pei was still worried, she knew there wasn’t much else she could do. She returned to her room with an uneasy heart.
After Bai Juntang finished showering, she came out and saw Cheng Wan sitting on the bed, staring into space. She walked over and gently pulled her into a hug.
Cheng Wan looked back at her, confused.
Bai Juntang rested her head on Cheng Wan’s shoulder and said quietly, “Ever since Sui Sui was born, all you think about is her. I feel like you haven’t even looked at me properly for a long time.”
Cheng Wan blinked and said in a soft voice, “That’s not true. I’m just worried about her. She’s so little. Do you think she’ll be scared in the hospital?”
She leaned into Bai Juntang and whispered, “I’ve heard that if a high fever doesn’t go down, it can cause brain damage. What if something happens to her?”
What if she not only ends up as an Omega, but also grows up to be a little slow?
What if Sui Sui not only ended up an Omega but also a silly little Omega?
The more Cheng Wan thought about it, the more anxious she became. She just couldn’t stop worrying.
“She won’t,” Bai Juntang said softly, comforted by the faint scent of white peach pheromones coming from Cheng Wan. “Lots of kids get fevers. Very few actually suffer brain damage from it. Even if Sui Sui ends up a bit silly, she won’t ever be mistreated. We’ll take care of her for the rest of our lives.”
Cheng Wan looked displeased. “Sui Sui is not silly.”
Bai Juntang smiled and coaxed her gently. “You’re right. Our little Sui Sui is very smart. Just like me.”
Cheng Wan shot her a glare but didn’t argue. If Sui Sui could really be as clever as Bai Juntang, that would be great. What she was afraid of was Sui Sui ending up like her—clumsy, slow, unable to do anything well. That future was just too painful to imagine.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Bai Juntang leaned over and gave her a kiss.
Cheng Wan quickly covered her mouth and pushed her away. She frowned. “I want to sleep now. Don’t get so close. It’s hot.”
Hot?
Before Bai Juntang could react, Cheng Wan had already pushed her to the side. Then she turned around and curled up under the covers, showing her back to her.
Feeling a bit rejected, Bai Juntang lifted the blanket and slid in next to her. Wrapping her arms around Cheng Wan’s waist, she pulled her close.
“You’ve gotten bold lately, haven’t you? Always so fierce with me.” Bai Juntang rested her head against the back of Cheng Wan’s neck, breathing in the soft scent of her pheromones. “Go to sleep early. We’re going to the hospital again tomorrow to check on Sui Sui.”
Cheng Wan froze for a moment, then finally relaxed and settled into Bai Juntang’s arms. She soon drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Aunt Pei insisted on going to the hospital with them. The other nanny also wanted to come. Bai Juntang had no choice but to take everyone.
When Bai Weilan saw so many people arrive, she rubbed her tired eyes and said, “It’s just one child. Is it really necessary for this many people to come?”
Aunt Pei had been worrying about little Sui Sui all night. She rushed over to the bed and peeked in. Sui Sui was awake, but she still looked a little listless. When she saw familiar faces, she pouted slightly but didn’t cry or fuss.
“So… is she better or not?” Aunt Pei touched her cheek and forehead. “She still feels warm to me.”
The nanny who had stayed overnight replied, “The doctor checked her. Her temperature has gone down, but we still need to monitor her closely.”
“Did she get an injection?”
“No. Madam and I spent the night cooling her down with damp cloths. The doctor said if her temperature can be lowered without medicine, that’s the best outcome. They just want us to keep watching her for now.”
Hearing this, Cheng Wan looked over at Bai Weilan. Even Bai Juntang was surprised. “Mom, you stayed up all night?”
Bai Weilan gave an annoyed glance. “You think I could sleep?”
Cheng Wan looked at the dark circles under her eyes and didn’t know what to say. One thing was clear: Bai Weilan truly cared about Sui Sui. She had looked after her like her own precious treasure.
“Mom,” Cheng Wan said softly, looking at her. “Now that we’re here, you should get some rest.”
Aunt Pei quickly chimed in, nodding. “You really should lie down for a bit. At your age, staying up all night is too much.”
Bai Weilan looked offended. She glared at Aunt Pei. “Who are you calling old? Do you think I’m that old?”
Aunt Pei let out a sigh. “You’re already a grandmother. No need to get all worked up about it. There’s a hotel right next to the hospital. Why don’t I get you a room so you can nap for a bit instead of heading home?”
Bai Weilan was clearly exhausted. Though she didn’t admit it, she couldn’t deny her body’s limits. As she packed up her things and headed out, she grumbled, “I used to pull two all-nighters without feeling a thing. How come just one night is enough to wear me out now?”
Aunt Pei gently encouraged her. “You’re amazing, really. You can do anything. Now come on, let’s go.”
Bai Juntang looked back at Cheng Wan and said to her and the other nanny, “You two stay here with Sui Sui. Aunt Pei and I will go get a room for them.”
Cheng Wan nodded, then hurried to the bedside.
Finally, Sui Sui saw her mother. Even though she still looked tired, her face lit up with a sweet smile. It melted everyone’s heart.
“Sui Sui…” Cheng Wan gently stroked her daughter’s little head. Seeing her smile made Cheng Wan’s heart ache. She looked so fragile and soft.
The nanny noticed Cheng Wan’s teary eyes and quickly reassured her. “Don’t be upset, madam. It’s normal for children to get sick. Sui Sui will only get stronger from now on.”
Cheng Wan nodded slowly. She watched as Sui Sui reached out her little hands, asking to be held. Cheng Wan immediately picked her up and cradled her in her arms.
Warm and soft, little Sui Sui smacked her lips and blew an adorable little bubble.
