How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 85
The next morning, Bai Juntang arrived early at the hospital. As soon as she stepped inside, she saw Cheng Wan surrounded by a group of people. For a moment, her heart jumped, thinking something had gone wrong.
But as she got closer, she realized that the doctors and nurses were teaching Cheng Wan how to hold Sui Sui.
Sui Sui had just been taken out of the incubator and placed into Cheng Wan’s arms. When Cheng Wan first heard the news, her eyes had lit up with excitement.
Now, the tiny, soft baby rested in her arms, carrying a faint milky scent.
“Lift this hand a little higher. Yes, place the other one here. That’s it. Gently pat her,” a nurse instructed. Aunt Pei stood close by, watching with curiosity. Seeing how awkwardly Cheng Wan was holding the baby, she looked anxious and almost wanted to take over herself.
Just then, someone noticed Bai Juntang walking in and greeted her with a smile.
“The family’s here. Come take a look at your baby. You’ll be discharged around noon today. Make sure to keep the baby warm on the way out, and don’t forget to return on time for vaccinations.”
“Thank you,” Bai Juntang replied with a nod.
Cheng Wan looked up when she heard her voice. Their eyes met briefly. There was something unspoken in that glance, but Cheng Wan said nothing. She lowered her head again and continued learning how to hold Sui Sui.
Aunt Pei saw Bai Juntang and quickly pulled her over to stand by the bed and listen to the nurse’s instructions.
The nurses did most of the talking while Cheng Wan focused on learning. Bai Juntang, however, found herself distracted. She couldn’t take her eyes off Cheng Wan and hardly registered anything being said.
Once the doctors and nurses left the room, Aunt Pei cheerfully rubbed her hands together and gently took Sui Sui from Cheng Wan’s arms.
It was Cheng Wan’s first time holding a newborn. Although Sui Sui was her own daughter and was exceptionally well-behaved, never crying or fussing, Cheng Wan’s arms were stiff and tense. After just a while, her back started to ache and her arms grew numb.
She couldn’t help rubbing her wrist, thinking back to the techniques the nurses had just taught her. She started to worry about whether she was truly capable of raising Sui Sui well.
At that moment, a warm and slender hand reached out and gently held her wrist.
Bai Juntang was sitting by the bed. She silently lowered her head and began to massage Cheng Wan’s sore wrist.
Her fingertips were warm and gentle, pressing softly against her skin. It felt comforting. As Bai Juntang focused on the massage, she didn’t speak. Cheng Wan looked at her profile, momentarily lost in thought.
She hadn’t slept well the night before. After Bai Juntang left, she had sat in bed for a long time. Her mind was either racing with thoughts or completely blank.
Eventually, her thoughts drifted to Sui Sui. This tiny girl, who had lived in an incubator from the moment she was born, was the only person in the world who shared her blood. Cheng Wan had made up her mind that no matter what happened, she would never leave her. If Bai Weilan tried to drive her away, she would take Sui Sui and go.
Still a little dazed, Cheng Wan watched as Bai Juntang carefully massaged her wrist. She only snapped back to reality when Bai Juntang looked up.
“Anywhere else sore?” Bai Juntang asked softly. “Is your back hurting too?”
Cheng Wan nodded.
Bai Juntang moved behind her and began gently massaging her lower back.
From across the room, Aunt Pei was sitting on the sofa, holding Sui Sui. When she saw Bai Juntang taking such good care of Cheng Wan, she smiled.
“Give her a proper massage. Wan Wan’s been saying her back hurts for days. You’ve got strong hands. Perfect for it.”
Just as she finished speaking, Sui Sui began to whimper in her arms. The baby was clearly about to cry.
“Oh no, what’s the matter now?” Aunt Pei looked down and asked playfully, “You don’t want me holding you anymore?”
Sui Sui pouted, waving her tiny fists and beginning to fuss. Cheng Wan straightened up quickly, worried.
“Let me hold her,” she said.
Seeing that the baby was about to cry, Aunt Pei had no choice but to hand her back.
It was strange. Sui Sui had always seemed happiest in her mother’s arms. Even the doctors said babies could recognize their mother’s scent and would naturally feel more at ease there.
But this time, Sui Sui wouldn’t stop crying. No one knew what was wrong.
Cheng Wan held her close, watching her face turn red from crying. She grew more anxious by the second.
“Why is she still crying?” she asked in a panic.
Aunt Pei checked the diaper and said, “She’s not wet. Maybe she’s hungry?”
Cheng Wan blinked in surprise.
“Probably,” Aunt Pei said. “I’ll go ask the nurse.”
She quickly left the room. Now only Bai Juntang, Cheng Wan, and the crying Sui Sui remained.
Cheng Wan had never faced something like this before. Her face turned pale from worry. Seeing her so lost, Bai Juntang felt her chest tighten.
“I don’t think it’s anything serious,” she said gently. She wrapped an arm around Cheng Wan and leaned closer to take Sui Sui’s wrist. Her face was close to Cheng Wan’s as she added, “We weren’t expecting to bring her out so soon. It caught us off guard. I should’ve arranged for the postpartum nurse earlier.”
Cheng Wan looked at her. At this distance, she noticed faint dark circles under Bai Juntang’s eyes. She must not have slept well either.
“I can take care of her,” Cheng Wan said quietly. “I don’t need a nurse. I can manage.”
Bai Juntang looked at her, then softly laughed. She pulled both Cheng Wan and Sui Sui into her arms.
“It’s not like we can’t afford it,” she said. “There’s no need to push yourself. Let the professionals handle it. The nurse is also here to look after you, not just the baby.”
Cheng Wan held Sui Sui close and buried her face into the curve of Bai Juntang’s neck, taking a deep breath.
The warm scent of Bai Juntang’s pheromones soothed her. The panic and nervousness slowly faded. Only then did Cheng Wan realize what she had just said.
Was she trying to prove herself?
She lowered her gaze. She could barely take care of herself. How could she possibly care for a newborn who was already crying so much?
Strangely, though, as the two of them sat together holding the baby, Sui Sui stopped crying. She let out a few soft sounds but seemed to settle down, as if comforted by the mixture of their scents.
A nurse walked in, took one look at the scene, and said calmly, “It’s time to feed the baby.”
Cheng Wan froze, her ears turning red.
After the nurse left and the door was closed, Aunt Pei came back and helped Cheng Wan feed Sui Sui. Since Cheng Wan hadn’t fully recovered and didn’t have much milk yet, they had to rely on formula for the time being.
The entire morning passed in a blur of learning and small mistakes. Cheng Wan finally began to understand Sui Sui’s cues.
Aunt Pei couldn’t get enough of the baby and refused to let her go. Cheng Wan, on the other hand, felt a bit nervous around her own child. Maybe babies really were cutest when they belonged to someone else.
They were scheduled to be discharged around noon. Everything felt a little sudden, but Cheng Wan couldn’t wait to bring Sui Sui home.
While Bai Juntang helped Cheng Wan pack, she thought about finding a moment to talk about what had happened the day before. But Cheng Wan seemed busy, and maybe it was just her imagination, but Bai Juntang felt that Cheng Wan was avoiding her.
“I’ll handle this one,” Bai Juntang said, reaching for a suitcase. As her hand brushed Cheng Wan’s wrist, Cheng Wan quickly pulled away.
She glanced at Bai Juntang, hesitated for a moment, then said, “Thanks. I’m going to check on Sui Sui.”
For some reason, Bai Juntang felt that their relationship hadn’t grown stronger after Sui Sui’s birth. Instead, the trust they had worked so hard to build seemed to collapse in an instant. It was as if everything they had achieved had been undone in a single moment.
Bai Juntang frowned but said nothing. She quietly went back to packing, her expression visibly gloomy.
Meanwhile, Aunt Pei was playing with Sui Sui. The baby, having just been fed, had fallen asleep again. She wore a pink outfit with little cherry blossom patterns and looked especially peaceful.
Cheng Wan crouched beside the sofa, watching her daughter sleep. She couldn’t help but think how much prettier Sui Sui had become in just a few days.
Her round face, soft cheeks, and pale, delicate skin made her look just like a sweet milk bun. Manager Zhou and the others had said she’d grow fast, and it really showed.
“Look how well she sleeps,” Aunt Pei said with a beaming smile. “She eats and sleeps like a champ. You’d never guess she was born premature. I think she’s going to grow up strong and healthy.”
Cheng Wan didn’t dare touch her, afraid of waking the little one. She could only gaze at her and quietly say, “I see her every day, but she already looks different.”
“Of course she does. Babies grow quickly. Blink and they’re already bigger,” Aunt Pei replied. “That’s why you need to spend time with her, take lots of pictures, and capture every little moment.”
Cheng Wan nodded. “Since we’re going home today, do we need to buy anything else? I’m not very good at this stuff.”
“Don’t worry. I already contacted the postpartum nanny. She’ll arrive this afternoon. Once we’re home, you can focus on resting. I’ll help take care of Sui Sui with the nanny.”
Cheng Wan let out a small sigh of relief.
At that moment, Sui Sui made a soft little sound. The two of them immediately went quiet so they wouldn’t disturb her.
After packing everything up, the room was filled with more than a few large suitcases, between gifts from others and items they bought themselves. Bai Juntang figured there was too much to carry in one trip. She planned to call someone for help while she took Cheng Wan and Sui Sui home.
Just as she was about to call Li Chen, there was a knock at the door.
So fast? She hadn’t even dialed yet.
Bai Juntang opened the door and immediately wanted to close it again.
Standing there was Bai Weilan, dressed in a burgundy blouse and white wide-leg pants, paired with tall white heels that made her look elegant and slim. She took off her sunglasses, looked directly at Bai Juntang, and said, “I came to visit. Hope you don’t mind?”
Bai Juntang certainly did mind, but still stepped aside to let her in.
Cheng Wan saw who it was and immediately tensed up. It was as if Bai Weilan had come to take Sui Sui away. Her eyes locked on her warily.
Bai Weilan felt the stare but didn’t acknowledge it. She sat down in the spot Aunt Pei had just vacated, leaned over Sui Sui, and gently touched her tiny hand. “Sleeping? What a good girl.”
Bai Juntang walked over and held Cheng Wan’s hand. “Don’t worry,” she said softly.
Cheng Wan lowered her head without replying and remained still.
Aunt Pei chatted with Bai Weilan for a bit. When she heard they would be discharged at noon, Bai Weilan said, “I happened to drive over too. Since there are so many of you, it might be tight in one car. Let’s split up.”
“No need,” Bai Juntang said, holding Cheng Wan’s hand tightly. “There are just four of us including Aunt Pei and Sui Sui. One car is enough.”
“We’re all family. No need to be so formal,” Bai Weilan said with a gentle smile, still gazing at the sleeping baby. Then she looked at Bai Juntang and added, “By the way, I’ve checked out of the hotel. I’ll be staying at home from today.”
