How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 71
The person in her arms felt soft and warm. Wrapped in the embrace was a gentle, lingering scent of mixed pheromones.
Cheng Wan was curled up against Bai Juntang, and when she heard her speak, she froze slightly. Then she slowly looked up at her.
“Have I been troubling you lately?” she asked softly.
Growing up, Cheng Wan had always been taught not to cause trouble for others. Xu He, her adoptive mother, disliked it when she asked for too much. Maybe it was because they weren’t related by blood, or maybe it was a lack of patience, but Xu He had always taught her to be obedient and sensible.
But during this pregnancy, whether it was the three unexpected heat cycles or her picky cravings, she felt like she had caused Bai Juntang a lot of stress without meaning to.
If she weren’t around, Bai Juntang’s life would probably be much easier. She was capable and confident at work, with a successful career and a well-established social circle. She didn’t have to rush home every night to take care of her or deal with her unpredictable heat.
Thinking about how she had hidden in Bai Juntang’s closet the night before made Cheng Wan feel incredibly ashamed.
Seeing the sadness in her eyes, Bai Juntang reached out and gently pulled her into her arms.
“You really have been quite a bit of trouble,” she said calmly.
Cheng Wan’s body stiffened slightly under the blanket, but Bai Juntang held her hand and continued, “But I’m your Alpha. Taking care of you is my responsibility. I don’t mind the trouble. I want to be here for you.”
Cheng Wan couldn’t explain the feeling in her heart. It was so full that it felt like it was overflowing. Her nose tingled, and her vision blurred. She wasn’t sure if she was feeling touched or overwhelmed, but tears silently rolled down her cheeks.
Bai Juntang noticed and leaned in to kiss her forehead gently.
“Why are you crying after just a few words?” she asked softly.
“I’m not crying,” Cheng Wan mumbled, covering her eyes, her cheeks flushed.
Bai Juntang didn’t push her. She chuckled and held her closer.
“But honestly, I do like seeing how you cry during your heat. You look so adorable.”
As she spoke, she gently pulled Cheng Wan’s hand away and kissed her again under the covers.
The kiss lasted a while. By the end, Cheng Wan was short of breath, her eyes red. She pushed lightly at Bai Juntang and whispered, “I don’t feel good. I need to go to the bathroom.”
“Okay,” Bai Juntang replied as she sat up, pulled on a nightgown, and said, “I’ll help you.”
There was a private bathroom inside her room. Cheng Wan struggled to move, so Bai Juntang simply picked her up and carried her into the bathroom.
After showering and changing into fresh clothes, the two of them finally stepped out of the room.
Aunt Pei had been waiting downstairs for a while. When she saw Bai Juntang supporting Cheng Wan as they slowly came down, she gasped.
“Be careful! Watch your step. Pregnant women shouldn’t be climbing stairs. You can’t see your feet and it’s so easy to fall.”
Cheng Wan was struggling to walk. One hand was gripping Bai Juntang, and the other held the railing tightly.
The main issue was her belly. It was so big she couldn’t see the stairs beneath her feet. Walking down a few dozen steps took several minutes.
When both feet finally touched the ground, she let out a long breath of relief.
“You silly girl,” Aunt Pei said with concern. “That’s why we arranged a room for you on the first floor. Going up and down the stairs like that is dangerous. Do you know how many pregnant women have miscarried from falling down stairs?”
Cheng Wan was startled. “Really? That many?”
“A lot,” Aunt Pei replied, trying to scare her a little. “Some even died, the baby too.”
Bai Juntang smiled helplessly. “Alright, Aunt Pei. Don’t scare her too much. We’re going to the hospital today for a check-up anyway.”
Aunt Pei looked at the clock. “It’s already past ten. Will there be enough time?”
“It should be fine,” Bai Juntang said. “I won’t feel at ease unless we check everything properly.”
Aunt Pei nodded seriously. She had been terrified yesterday when she couldn’t find Cheng Wan. With that big belly and difficulty walking, anything could have gone wrong.
Thankfully, Cheng Wan had behaved sensibly and hadn’t gotten herself into real danger.
After a quick breakfast, Bai Juntang took Cheng Wan to the hospital.
Dr. Huang was already familiar with the two of them. Just like last time, they started with the routine prenatal check-up, then moved on to a few gland-related tests.
The gland tests were new and hadn’t been done before. Dr. Huang personally took them through the process, and the results were ready on the spot.
Cheng Wan could feel something was off in her body. The tests were tiring, but she didn’t complain. She just watched Dr. Huang nervously, noticing a hint of worry in his eyes.
He read her reports several times, his brows gradually furrowing.
“Your results looked fine before. I remember you had poor nutrition in the beginning, but things improved later. So why are things getting worse now?”
Cheng Wan’s heart dropped. She looked at him and asked quickly, “Is something wrong with me?”
Dr. Huang looked at her seriously. “Your pheromone levels are all over the place. The fluctuations aren’t following any pattern, and the levels are much higher than what we see in other pregnant Omegas. Did you experience three heat cycles this month?”
Cheng Wan nodded.
Dr. Huang didn’t say anything right away.
Bai Juntang frowned slightly. “If there’s a problem, can you prescribe something to help?”
“This isn’t something we can treat with just any medicine,” Dr. Huang said, glancing at Cheng Wan’s rounded belly. “She’s only two months away from her due date. I don’t recommend using medication unless it’s absolutely necessary.”
After thinking it over, he continued, “Here’s what I suggest. Pheromone spikes during pregnancy are difficult to manage. For now, the Alpha should stay close. Don’t go on trips or stay out late. Exchange pheromones every three days. I’ll give you some test strips to monitor her levels. Use them every morning on an empty stomach. If the results are too high, come see me right away.”
Holding the packet of single-use test strips, Bai Juntang and Cheng Wan sat together in the hospital waiting area, carefully reading the instructions.
Bai Juntang quickly understood how it worked. The strips were for testing pheromone levels. Just place one on the back of the neck for five minutes each morning. It didn’t hurt. The only real task left was to make sure they exchanged pheromones every three days.
She remembered when they first started living together. Back then, they exchanged pheromones often, usually through kisses. But once Cheng Wan’s condition stabilized, they stopped doing it regularly.
She hadn’t expected that she would start doing it again.
While Cheng Wan was still reading the instructions on the test strips, Bai Juntang reached over and gently held her hand. Leaning closer, she asked, “Are you done reading?”
Caught off guard, Cheng Wan looked up and met Bai Juntang’s bright eyes. She blinked slowly.
“I’m still reading,” Cheng Wan replied. “What is it?”
“I already understand it. From now on, I’ll help you test each day. I’m with you every day anyway,” Bai Juntang said, pulling her into her arms. Her mind wandered back to the earlier days when they used to exchange pheromones through kisses. Back then, their relationship wasn’t so close, and every kiss had taken effort. Unlike now, when she could hold her whenever she wanted.
Feeling Bai Juntang’s warmth and weight, Cheng Wan blushed and whispered, “We’re still in public.”
“So what?” Bai Juntang said with rare stubbornness. She lowered her gaze to Cheng Wan’s belly and gently placed her hand over it. “I never realized how hard pregnancy could be.”
Cheng Wan nodded seriously. “Me neither.”
As she continued to rub her belly, Bai Juntang said, “Let’s have Aunt Pei tidy up the house when we get back. I’ll move downstairs and stay with you.”
“Live together?” Cheng Wan was stunned. Her face turned bright red.
“Why so sudden? I… I move around a lot in my sleep. I wake up all the time at night…” she stammered, not knowing where to look.
Bai Juntang remained calm, holding her and saying gently, “It’s alright. I’ll be home with you anyway. There are only two months left. If we stay focused, it’ll be over before we know it.”
Cheng Wan blinked. When she remembered the due date was just two months away, she quietly nodded.
Bai Juntang was right. Just two months. She couldn’t afford any more complications. She didn’t want anything else to go wrong.
After they got home from the hospital, Bai Juntang and Aunt Pei went upstairs and began moving her things downstairs.
The room Cheng Wan was using had its own bathroom, but it wasn’t the main bedroom. It only had a bed, a wardrobe, and a small wooden desk near the balcony. The space wasn’t large.
Now that Bai Juntang’s things were being moved in, the room felt even smaller.
She brought down her laptop and some documents she often worked on. Bai Juntang was used to working in both her study and her bedroom. The study was for video meetings with colleagues like Li Chen. The bedroom was where she worked when she didn’t feel like going downstairs.
Her files were all stored on her laptop and tablet, which were confidential and needed to be kept close.
Then came her clothes. Her bedroom upstairs was three times the size, with a walk-in closet, master bath, and a small open study area.
Once everything was moved, the already small room became quite cramped. Cheng Wan’s wardrobe, which used to feel half-empty, was now full to the brim after just a few of Bai Juntang’s outfits were added.
When everything was finally settled, Cheng Wan looked around at the room full of new things and suddenly realized she was truly living with Bai Juntang now.
No—she had finally started sharing a bed with her.
Things were very different on Cheng Wan and Bai Juntang’s side compared to what was happening with Cheng Jiajian and his wife. Their lives had become miserable as they wandered around, dodging debt collectors.
Cheng Jiajian used to be full of confidence. The project he had managed to wrest away from Bai Juntang was something he valued deeply. He even traveled to Nanhai himself, sitting down with various executives for tea and conversations.
The companies he was dealing with were major players in the industry. But it wasn’t until he lost everything that he finally realized why they had treated a mid-sized company like his so warmly.
Because it had been a trap set by Bai Juntang.
Looking back now, Cheng Jiajian regretted everything. He had thought that landing that deal would take his company public and turn him into a major figure in the industry. But just days later, he went bankrupt and found himself buried under more than two billion in debt.
And then he found out that Cheng Wan wanted to cut ties with him completely.
“That heartless woman!” Cheng Jiajian slammed his fist onto the rickety table in the rundown apartment they were renting. His eyes were bloodshot with anger. “I raised her for over ten years, and now she’s working with outsiders to ruin me. She’s driven our family into this mess, and now she wants to walk away like it has nothing to do with her?”
Xu He was so startled by his anger that she shrank back into a corner and didn’t dare say a word. She had gone from a once proud, elegant woman to someone who now looked like a frightened rat, hiding in the shadows as they ran from one place to another. All she could do now was quietly bring her husband a glass of water.
But before she could even fill it, Cheng Jiajian smacked the cup out of her hand, sending it crashing to the floor.
His bloodshot eyes glared at her as he said coldly, “We’re not signing that disownment agreement. The baby in Cheng Wan’s belly is worth at least a billion. Once she gives birth, we’ll take the money and leave the country. We’ll never have to live like this again.”
Xu He stared at him in disbelief. “Do you really think… Cheng Wan would still be willing to give us money?”
“If she’s not willing, does that mean we just give up?” Cheng Jiajian’s tone turned even darker. “She’ll give us the money whether she wants to or not. One billion. We’ll get it. No matter what.”
