How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 70
Since Aunt Pei came back, Bai Juntang finally had time to return to the company. During the period she was away, combined with the incident involving the five-star hotel, Qiangu lost a major project. Right now, there’s truly a lot to handle at the company.
With Aunt Pei at home to keep Cheng Wan company, she could finally feel at ease. She planned to take a proper break once this busy period passed, and stay by Cheng Wan’s side until she gave birth.
Because of this, Bai Juntang had been working overtime every day recently. She often didn’t get home until very late, sometimes even after midnight.
Cheng Wan had gotten used to Bai Juntang not being home. Her daily routine was simple. She would wake up and eat, then lie down. When lying down got tiring, she would sleep. Every day, she felt like a pampered little piglet being raised just to wait for the day she could finally “unload the goods.”
That day, like usual, Cheng Wan was lying down staring blankly at the ceiling. The baby in her belly, Sui Sui, suddenly started kicking restlessly. Her stomach bulged on one side and sank on the other with each movement.
She just let the baby kick. Even when it became uncomfortable, she could only silently remind herself in her heart, “This is my own child.”
Aunt Pei found her appearance amusing. She walked over, gently touched Cheng Wan’s belly, and said with a soft smile, “Good baby, don’t tire your mama out. A couple of kicks are enough.”
But Sui Sui didn’t listen and continued kicking more fiercely.
Cheng Wan supported her lower back and sat up. She had actually gotten hungry from all the kicking.
“Aunt Pei, I want something to eat. What do we have at home?” she asked, rubbing her belly.
“There’s still a box of the cake you bought earlier. Want to finish it today?” Aunt Pei replied. “But it’s in the fridge. If you don’t want something cold, I can make you a bowl of noodles.”
Cheng Wan thought for a moment. She wasn’t that hungry, so she said, “I’ll just have the cake. I’m not starving.”
Aunt Pei nodded and went to get the small cake for her. As she glanced at the time, she added, “It’s already past ten. I wonder what time Juntang will be back tonight.”
Cheng Wan didn’t reply right away. Even though she knew how busy Bai Juntang was, she still hoped Juntang could spend more time with her.
Cheng Wan wasn’t the clingy type. In the past, she didn’t care much whether Bai Juntang was around or not. But lately—ever since that first unexpected heat episode—she had started becoming more and more attached.
She loved the scent of Bai Juntang’s pheromones and wanted to hold her hand.
She also wanted to do more intimate things with her.
She looked it up online. Many people said this kind of reaction was caused by pheromone imbalance during the late stages of pregnancy. At this stage, Omegas often became very dependent on their Alphas. It made the Alpha focus more on caring for the Omega. From a biological point of view, this was nature’s way of ensuring the Alpha stayed close and didn’t have the time or energy to look at other Omegas.
An Alpha could mark many Omegas, but an Omega could only have one Alpha.
This imbalance in the relationship caused Omegas in late pregnancy to become more clingy. They wanted to smell their Alpha’s scent and didn’t want to be left alone.
Cheng Wan never believed in this stuff before. But the closer she got to her due date, the more helpless she felt.
She sat on the couch eating the chilled cake. The two big bags the store owner had given her before were long gone. This was from a new batch, and now it was the last piece.
Even after finishing the snack, she still felt uncomfortable. Her body was burning up inside, but Aunt Pei was older and had joint problems, so Cheng Wan couldn’t lower the air conditioning too much. She went to the fridge and took out a popsicle.
But even after eating the popsicle, she still didn’t feel any better.
It was a strange feeling, like something was missing. A kind of itch that couldn’t be scratched, like a cat pawing at her from the inside.
What exactly was missing?
Hugging her belly, Cheng Wan thought for a long time. Then, in a sudden moment of clarity, she realized what it was. She really, really wanted to smell Bai Juntang’s pheromones…
It was already past ten at night. Most people in the office had left, but Bai Juntang was still there, busy with work. She glanced at the calendar on her desk. Once she finished this workload, she could finally take a break at home starting tomorrow.
Most of the key project agreements that needed her attention were already finalized. The rest were minor matters. They could be handled by the vice president or brought home for her to review.
Even during her break, Bai Juntang wouldn’t be completely off the clock. She could still work from home.
Just as she was finishing up and getting ready to leave, her phone rang. It was a call from Aunt Pei.
Thinking it was a reminder to come home—since she had told Aunt Pei that morning she would be home earlier tonight—she answered while packing up her things.
“Aunt Pei, I just finished. I’ll be heading home soon. Don’t wait up. You both go ahead and sleep.”
“Juntang, hurry home. I can’t find Cheng Wan!”
Bai Juntang froze. Her hand stopped moving. Her brows furrowed. “What do you mean you can’t find her? How could she be missing?”
“I don’t know either,” Aunt Pei said, clearly flustered. “She was just here a moment ago. Then she was gone. I checked the door lock records. She didn’t leave through the front door. But I’ve searched the whole house, and she’s nowhere to be found.”
If she didn’t leave through the front door, then she must still be inside. But Cheng Wan wasn’t the type to play pranks, especially not at this hour. She wouldn’t just disappear to scare Aunt Pei.
The first thought that came to Bai Juntang’s mind was that Cheng Wan might be going through another heat episode. Aunt Pei was a Beta, so she couldn’t smell pheromones. Naturally, she wouldn’t be able to sense where Cheng Wan was.
Just thinking about how weak and helpless Cheng Wan looked that night made Bai Juntang’s heart tighten with worry.
“Aunt Pei, don’t panic,” Bai Juntang said as she grabbed her things and walked quickly out the door. She tried to comfort her. “Wanwan probably didn’t leave the house. She might be going through another heat and found somewhere to hide. Look around the house again. If you still can’t find her, don’t worry. I’ll be home soon.”
Aunt Pei was clearly anxious. “But didn’t her last heat just end last week? Why is it happening again? Could something be wrong with her?”
Bai Juntang didn’t know either. She had planned to take Cheng Wan to the hospital for a full check-up once she finished up her work. But now it looked like she’d have to go tomorrow.
After hanging up the phone, Bai Juntang stepped on the gas and rushed home. She parked without thinking and quickly unlocked the front door.
Sure enough, the moment she stepped inside, she smelled Cheng Wan’s pheromones. She didn’t know if that was a good sign or not. At least it confirmed that Cheng Wan was still at home.
Aunt Pei was waiting nervously for her. As soon as she saw Bai Juntang walk in, she hurried over, her face full of worry.
Before she could speak, Bai Juntang asked, “Did you find her?”
Aunt Pei shook her head.
Bai Juntang let out a breath and gently reassured her. “It’s okay. Wanwan’s still here. She must be hiding somewhere. Since you’re a Beta, you wouldn’t be able to smell her pheromones. I’ll go look for her.”
As she spoke, she walked further into the house. She sniffed the air lightly, then turned her eyes upstairs.
She walked up the stairs and passed by several familiar rooms, finally stopping at her own bedroom door.
The scent was strongest here. Bai Juntang was certain Cheng Wan was inside.
She raised her hand and slowly pushed the door open. The moment the door moved, the strong scent of pheromones filled the room. She glanced around the dark space, her eyes landing on the walk-in closet.
She didn’t hesitate. She walked straight to the closet and opened one of the cabinet doors.
Her clothes were scattered all over the floor, and Cheng Wan was lying on top of them. Her arms were wrapped around her belly, and her cheeks were flushed red.
Bai Juntang crouched down and gently touched Cheng Wan’s forehead.
She was burning hot.
Maybe because she had gone through heat just a week ago, the scent wasn’t as overwhelming as usual. At least Bai Juntang was still able to stay clear-headed.
She noticed that Cheng Wan had pulled out clothes from all seasons and piled them together. She was even using one of Bai Juntang’s custom-made suits as a pillow. Even in her sleep, she looked restless and uncomfortable.
Aunt Pei was still standing by the door, worried by the silence. She called out, “Did you find her?”
Bai Juntang sighed and answered, “Yes. She’s in my room.”
Aunt Pei was confused. “Why did she go to your room? Is she alright?”
“She’s okay,” Bai Juntang said softly, gently brushing the hair off Cheng Wan’s sweaty forehead. “It’s getting late. You should get some rest, Aunt Pei. I’ll take care of her.”
Aunt Pei understood what she meant. Without saying more, she quietly closed the door and left them alone.
Bai Juntang looked down at Cheng Wan, bent over, and carefully picked her up. She carried her out of the closet and laid her gently on the bed.
Cheng Wan let out a soft whimper, her brows tightly furrowed. She looked very uncomfortable.
“You really don’t make things easy for me,” Bai Juntang murmured. She sat down beside her, lowered her head, and kissed her on the forehead. Her voice was filled with a mix of helplessness and affection. “You always make me worry.”
The next morning, Cheng Wan slowly woke up, still feeling a bit out of it.
She could vaguely remember doing something the night before, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t recall the details. Still, the soreness in her neck and the discomfort in her body felt very familiar.
She turned her head and saw Bai Juntang sleeping next to her.
Bai Juntang lay quietly on the pillow, sleeping in a neat and calm posture. In that moment, she looked like a sleeping beauty. Cheng Wan stared at her for a second, feeling like her memories were tangled up.
She glanced around the room. It clearly wasn’t her own. So this must be…
Suddenly, she remembered. Last night, she had desperately wanted to smell Bai Juntang’s pheromones. But Juntang wasn’t home, and she couldn’t help herself. Somehow, she had ended up going upstairs and crawling into her closet.
Even though Aunt Pei had washed all the clothes clean, Cheng Wan could still smell Juntang’s unique scent on them.
That scent belonged to her Alpha. The one she would rely on for the rest of her life.
The moment that thought hit her, Cheng Wan felt like she could die of embarrassment.
Who sneaks into their Alpha’s closet, steals her clothes, and sleeps on them?
At that moment, it felt like the most shameful thing in the world.
Sui Sui kicked her from inside the belly, and Cheng Wan let out a quiet groan, curling up into a little ball.
The sound woke Bai Juntang. Her long lashes trembled, and she slowly opened her eyes.
She turned slightly, saw Cheng Wan with her face buried under the blanket, and gently reached out to pull her into her arms.
“Ah…”
Cheng Wan was startled. She looked up at the woman now right in front of her, her cheeks turning red. She whispered, “You’re awake?”
“Yeah,” Bai Juntang replied softly, keeping her eyes closed as she held her. “You wore me out yesterday.”
