How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 39
The next morning, Cheng Wan woke up feeling uncomfortably hot.
It was June, so it shouldn’t have been this hot, but she felt as though her entire body was burning.
The heat, especially coming from behind her, made her feel uneasy.
“Mm…”
Cheng Wan slowly opened her eyes. She was lying on her side in bed, the lamp on her bedside still lit and casting a dim, yellowish glow across the room.
The intense warmth from behind her didn’t subside. She froze for a moment before realizing that it wasn’t just her back—she seemed to be lying in someone’s arms. The person was holding her tightly from behind, with one warm hand resting on her waist.
A hand?
Cheng Wan looked at the fair, slender hand in front of her, and it took her a moment to process it. She instinctively turned her head, only to see Bai Juntang calmly lying behind her. Bai Juntang had her arms wrapped around Cheng Wan, holding her close. The heat radiating from her body was what had made Cheng Wan feel so warm.
Why was Bai Juntang in her bed?
Cheng Wan’s head buzzed with confusion. Her sleep quality had been excellent lately. Once she fell asleep, she didn’t wake up easily. She wouldn’t even have noticed if someone had climbed into bed with her. Not to mention, she doubted even an earthquake would have disturbed her rest.
Bai Juntang must have come in while Cheng Wan was deep asleep last night. But how could she end up sleeping in her bed?
Cheng Wan froze, unsure of what to do. Her mind was blank, unable to comprehend what had happened the night before.
She wasn’t blaming herself for being so nervous—after all, the last time something like this happened was a few months ago.
Back then, Bai Juntang had woken up before her, and by the time Cheng Wan woke up, everything was already over. But now…
Cheng Wan gripped the edge of the blanket, realizing that besides feeling warm, her body didn’t feel off in any other way.
She couldn’t quite pinpoint what felt wrong, but she didn’t have the pain from that night. It seemed like the two of them had simply spent the night lying in the same bed.
Cheng Wan lowered her gaze, biting her lip. She felt that the way they were now definitely wasn’t right. The alarm on her phone hadn’t gone off yet, so it couldn’t have been 7 a.m. yet.
But exactly what time it was, she wasn’t sure.
Cheng Wan slowly reached out to move Bai Juntang’s hand from her waist, but as soon as she did, Bai Juntang quickly pulled her back, wrapping her arm around Cheng Wan’s waist and drawing her fully into her embrace.
The sudden movement made Cheng Wan gasp, and she instinctively struggled for a moment. But then, she froze, her body going stiff.
She could feel Bai Juntang’s breath on the back of her neck, so close to her gland. The sensation was overwhelming, and Cheng Wan couldn’t bring herself to move.
Thinking about how close Bai Juntang was, with her own gland practically right in front of her, made Cheng Wan feel as if she had been paralyzed. She couldn’t bring herself to do anything.
“Mm…” Cheng Wan closed her eyes in distress, not understanding why things had turned out this way when she woke up.
Bai Juntang never liked getting close to her, did she? Other than following the doctor’s advice and exchanging pheromones twice a week, there were no moments of intimacy.
Wrapped tightly in Bai Juntang’s arms, Cheng Wan could smell a faint trace of alcohol, the rich scent lingering in the air—showing that Bai Juntang had likely been drinking the night before.
Cheng Wan nervously gripped the blanket, feeling the warmth of the person behind her.
Was Bai Juntang drunk?
Is that why she ended up in the wrong room, lying in Cheng Wan’s bed?
Cheng Wan turned her head to look at the person behind her and saw Bai Juntang’s peaceful sleeping face.
It was clear that Bai Juntang looked much gentler while asleep. During the day, her sharp eyes could be intense, like those of a hawk, making her seem fierce. But now, sleeping, there was a calm and tender look about her.
Cheng Wan felt trapped, her discomfort growing. She wanted to move, to get out of bed so that Bai Juntang could sleep alone.
But Bai Juntang seemed unwilling to let her go. When Cheng Wan tried to move her arm again, Bai Juntang pulled her back into her embrace, holding her tightly.
Cheng Wan was completely helpless. The strong scent of alcohol mixed with Bai Juntang’s pheromones overwhelmed her senses, making her feel dizzy—almost as if she, too, had drunk too much.
As an alpha, Bai Juntang’s strength was greater than that of an Omega. No matter how much Cheng Wan struggled, she couldn’t break free. All she managed to do was exhaust herself.
With the commotion, if Bai Juntang hadn’t woken up by now, something would have been wrong. Bai Juntang’s eyes fluttered open shortly after.
The first thing she saw was Cheng Wan’s neck, her smooth, pale skin exposed and vulnerable. Bai Juntang paused for a moment, stunned by the sight.
Perhaps because of the struggle, Cheng Wan’s skin now had a soft, pink glow, and her thin nightgown barely covered her rounded shoulders, making her look especially alluring.
Bai Juntang’s first thought was why Cheng Wan was in her arms.
When she looked around the room and saw the familiar setting, she realized she was in Cheng Wan’s room. Her second thought was that she must have gotten drunk last night and ended up in the wrong room.
To be honest, Bai Juntang felt a bit panicked as she woke up. She wasn’t worried about what might have happened between them—she was confident enough to take responsibility if something had happened. But what concerned her was whether Cheng Wan had fully recovered. She didn’t want to do anything that might harm her.
Bai Juntang’s hand rested on Cheng Wan’s stomach, feeling the baby inside. She gently caressed her belly, causing Cheng Wan to shiver slightly in her arms.
It felt different from before. Cheng Wan had gained some weight, and it seemed like the baby had grown a lot. Bai Juntang had been keeping a close eye on Cheng Wan’s meals, encouraging her to eat more, and this weight gain was proof that her efforts were working.
Cheng Wan turned her head and looked into Bai Juntang’s eyes. With a frustrated sigh, she asked, “You… you’re awake?”
“Mm.” Bai Juntang replied nonchalantly, not letting go. Instead, she tightened her hold, pulling Cheng Wan even closer.
Cheng Wan’s eyes widened in shock. “!!!!”
“Why are you holding me again?”
Bai Juntang closed her eyes lightly and said to Cheng Wan, “I’m so tired. Let me just hold you and sleep for a little while.”
Cheng Wan didn’t dare to move. She whispered, “If you want to sleep a little longer, I can leave. I don’t want to disturb your rest.”
Bai Juntang remained silent, still holding her tightly.
Cheng Wan spoke again, “Miss Bai, could you please let go of me? You won’t be able to sleep well with me here…”
“Shut up.” Bai Juntang muttered, her voice sounding irritated as she buried her face in Cheng Wan’s neck, causing Cheng Wan to shiver. She tightened her grip on Cheng Wan’s waist and added, “If you keep talking, I’ll mark you.”
Cheng Wan was left speechless. She couldn’t tell if Bai Juntang’s harsh words or the threat had any effect, but sure enough, she immediately went quiet. In Bai Juntang’s embrace, she spent the rest of the morning.
When Bai Juntang finally opened her eyes again, it was already past 10 a.m.
Cheng Wan, still being held by Bai Juntang, hadn’t done anything else. She had taken the day off and had ended up falling asleep with her phone in her hand. When Bai Juntang opened her eyes, she saw Cheng Wan asleep beside her, her brows furrowed in her sleep, still holding onto her phone.
It seemed like Cheng Wan was still restless, even in her sleep.
Thinking back to the events of that morning, Bai Juntang felt a rare sense of guilt. She leaned against the headboard, watching Cheng Wan sleep. She gently picked up the phone from Cheng Wan’s hand and placed it on the bedside table.
At this point, it didn’t matter if she was late for work. Bai Juntang didn’t wake Cheng Wan. Instead, she got out of bed and noticed the wrinkled clothes she had left behind from last night, feeling a little frustrated.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Guazi, the little orange cat, standing at the door, trying to sneak in to play with Cheng Wan. With a quick move, Bai Juntang scooped the cat up into her arms and closed the door behind her.
Guazi, clearly displeased, squirmed and meowed.
Aunt Pei saw Bai Juntang coming out of Cheng Wan’s room but didn’t seem surprised. Instead, she smiled as she took Guazi from her and said, “Has Cheng Wan woken up?”
Bai Juntang, despite her thick skin, couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed. Her ears flushed red as she mumbled, “She’s still resting.”
As soon as she said that, Bai Juntang felt something was off. She quickly added, “I got drunk last night and walked into the wrong room.”
Aunt Pei smiled warmly. “I know, I know. I don’t meddle in the affairs of young people, but Cheng Wan’s already over four months along, so she needs to be careful.”
Bai Juntang awkwardly responded, “Aunt Pei, I really was drunk and walked into the wrong room. Please don’t overthink it.”
Aunt Pei chuckled. “I’m not overthinking it. Cheng Wan is such a good girl. You’re not just planning on leaving her with the child, are you? Mrs. Bai isn’t that heartless, and you’re not either. If you like Cheng Wan, you should be clear with her. Don’t keep everything inside. Some things need to be said.”
Bai Juntang sighed. “Aunt Pei, please stop worrying. I smell like alcohol, and I just need something to eat. Let me go upstairs and shower, and you can make something for me.”
“Alright, go ahead and shower. I’ll prepare something for you,” Aunt Pei replied.
After Bai Juntang showered and changed into a fresh set of clothes, she came downstairs and found Cheng Wan already sitting at the dining table. Hearing the movement, Cheng Wan looked up, and their eyes met.
Bai Juntang watched as Cheng Wan’s face instantly turned bright red, almost as if by magic. For some reason, she felt a sudden wave of happiness at the sight.
She loved seeing Cheng Wan blush and avoid looking at her—it made her feel both warm and amused.
“Good morning,” Bai Juntang said as she came downstairs and looked at Cheng Wan. “Did you sleep well?”
Cheng Wan held back her blush. How could she have slept well? But she didn’t dare show any frustration. Instead, she stayed silent and avoided Bai Juntang’s gaze.
“Today is Friday, which means tomorrow we’re going to your parents’ house,” Bai Juntang said as she broke off a piece of toast and dipped it in strawberry jam. “It’s the first time we’re going there. Should we bring anything?”
Cheng Wan shook her head. “No need. They don’t really lack anything.”
As long as Bai Juntang was coming, whether they brought gifts or not didn’t matter. What the Cheng family truly wanted was the resources that Bai Juntang held in her hands.
Cheng Wan glanced at Bai Juntang a little longer as she ate, thinking to herself. Even now, she couldn’t understand why Bai Juntang was willing to go back to her family’s house. After all, Bai Juntang had once refused to even step into the Cheng family home. But now, she had agreed so easily.
Cheng Wan thought, maybe Bai Juntang had her own reasons for doing this.
Although Cheng Jiajian and his wife had raised Cheng Wan for over ten years, their hearts had always been distant. Cheng Wan had never been able to fully accept the coldness and indifference she had endured from them over the years.
If possible, Cheng Wan hoped Bai Juntang could help break the deadlock. And once it was broken, no matter what happened—whether it fell apart or resulted in disdain—it couldn’t possibly be worse than the current situation.
Cheng Wan lowered her gaze, sensing that tomorrow’s visit to the Cheng family wasn’t going to go smoothly.
