How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 38
Xu He was thrilled to hear that Bai Juntang had agreed to come. She immediately set the date for next Saturday at noon, planning to have a meal at the Cheng family’s villa and invite some relatives and friends to gather and celebrate.
Cheng Wan wasn’t sure what Xu He was trying to accomplish, so she told Bai Juntang everything. Bai Juntang, however, seemed completely confident and at ease, which left Cheng Wan feeling a bit confused.
After Yang Zhiman was transferred, a new general manager had been promoted within the company. He was an alpha in his forties, with a good temperament. He had a gentle beta wife and a son, and it was said that he had studied abroad when he was younger. He was hardworking and well-respected by everyone at the company.
On his first day in the office, he invited everyone out for a meal to introduce himself.
Perhaps because they were concerned about the situation with Yang Zhiman repeating itself, the appointment letter was personally delivered by Li Chen, who spent over an hour talking with the new general manager in the office. Cheng Wan had no idea what was discussed, but when Li Chen came out, he winked at her.
Cheng Wan immediately noticed that the new general manager was looking at her differently. There was a slight wariness in his gaze, and he spoke to her with extra politeness.
Cheng Wan felt a bit helpless. She could guess why this was happening—now, besides Chang Le, another person at the company knew about her relationship with Bai Juntang.
“Cheng Wan, here’s today’s afternoon tea.” Supervisor Zhou placed a box of freshly cut fruit on Cheng Wan’s desk. He smiled as he looked at her pale yellow dress and said, “This dress is really nice, it covers your belly well.”
Cheng Wan froze for a moment, then blushed slightly. “It’s not that. Actually, my belly is already pretty noticeable.”
“You’re still fine,” a colleague nearby said. “Cheng Wan, you’re so slim. When you wear looser clothes, it’s hard to tell.”
“Yeah, the baby’s only about the size of a fist right now, and the amniotic fluid isn’t too much either.”
“But Cheng Wan, your belly hides so well! You can’t even tell from behind. I bet it’s a girl.”
By now, everyone at the company knew Cheng Wan was pregnant, and everyone was very considerate. However, many were surprised because Cheng Wan had never mentioned being married. It was a bit of a mystery how she suddenly had a baby.
That said, no one would say anything inappropriate to Cheng Wan’s face. Most of the discussions took place behind her back.
Some colleagues who were closer to Cheng Wan walked over and started discussing her pregnancy more casually. “Wanwan, how could your alpha let you keep working while you’re pregnant? I heard Omega pregnancies are fragile, and they often have to be hospitalized to protect the baby.”
Cheng Wan was a little surprised by the question. She replied uncertainly, “I feel fine, though. I haven’t felt much different from before. It doesn’t seem like I need to stay home all the time.”
“Even though you say that, you still need to be careful. I’ve seen so many stories online about accidents where both the child and the mother didn’t make it because they weren’t careful.”
“With medical technology being so advanced, that shouldn’t happen, right?”
“Even beta pregnancies can be dangerous, and it’s even riskier for Omegas.”
“But isn’t Omega considered a highly fertile body type? That’s why the country encourages more children from Omegas.”
“Having more children is fine, but you need to be able to afford them. For us regular working families, raising one child is already so hard.”
The conversation among the colleagues continued, with everyone discussing the gap between the rich and the poor and the struggles of raising children. Cheng Wan didn’t know what to say, so she quietly continued eating her snacks.
The days at the office passed quickly. When it was time to leave work, Cheng Wan found herself craving something again. Despite having eaten a fair amount today, she still wanted something else.
She grabbed Chang Le and went downstairs to the snack street, where they bought a box of duck necks. They sat on the only small sofa in the shop, nibbling on the duck necks.
Although Chang Le loved eating these kinds of snacks, she remembered that Cheng Wan never liked them before. So, with her face covered in oil, she asked, “Wanwan, why are you eating so many snacks lately? And why are you craving spicy food? Can your stomach handle it?”
Cheng Wan took a sip of lemon water, thought for a moment, and replied, “I can’t control it. If I don’t have something spicy in a day, I feel uncomfortable.”
But at home, Bai Juntang kept a close eye on her. Not only was she forbidden from eating spicy food, but anything that could irritate her stomach was also off-limits. Aunt Pei only made food with mild flavors, and Cheng Wan could only eat something flavorful once every three or four days.
Fortunately, at work, Cheng Wan could have extra meals, so she didn’t mind much.
Chang Le looked at her helplessly, as if recalling something, and leaned in to whisper, “I heard they say ‘sour baby for a boy, spicy baby for a girl.’ You’re not really having a girl, are you?”
Cheng Wan paused. She wasn’t sure whether she was having a boy or a girl. Honestly, she hoped it was a girl.
Girls were wonderful. If the child took after Bai Juntang’s height and looks, that would be even better.
Cheng Wan herself was quite pretty, but she was too delicate, looking like someone easy to bully.
Bai Juntang, on the other hand, was completely different. When she casually stood somewhere, with just a slight frown, people around her would keep their distance.
Cheng Wan remained silent for a long time before softly saying, “I hope it’s a girl.”
She wanted a daughter, and… she hoped Bai Juntang would like that too.
After finishing her lemon water, Cheng Wan’s phone rang. It was Bai Juntang.
“I have a business event tonight, so I won’t be able to pick you up,” Bai Juntang said over the phone. “I’ve asked Li Chen to pick you up. Just wait for him at the company’s entrance.”
“There’s no need to trouble Assistant Li, he’s so busy.” Cheng Wan thought for a moment and then replied, “I can walk back myself. It’s not far, and the doctor said I should walk more anyway.”
Bai Juntang was silent for a moment before responding, “Alright, take a walk back. Call me when you get home.”
“Will calling you interrupt your work?”
“No, just give me a call when you can.”
Cheng Wan nodded and ended the call. As soon as she looked up, she saw Chang Le, nibbling on the duck neck, watching her with a curious look.
“Boss and Boss’s wife, still as sweet as ever today,” Chang Le teased with envy. “I really want to tell everyone your little secret. Or is it just me who gets to know this? Lucky me!”
“Don’t say anything, I don’t want everyone to know,” Cheng Wan quickly got up and said to Chang Le. “I didn’t have her come pick me up. How about we walk around a bit more? I haven’t been out in a while and want to eat more before heading back.”
“But you’re pregnant, Omega. Are you sure it’s okay to eat all this?”
“I’ll eat a little less, I know what I can and can’t have. It won’t be a problem.”
Chang Le gave up trying to stop her and went along with Cheng Wan. They strolled around the snack street for a bit before heading home, both satisfied.
Once they got home, Cheng Wan immediately called Bai Juntang. They spoke for a few minutes before ending the call. Aunt Pei had prepared four dishes and a soup for Cheng Wan, all of her favorites.
However, Cheng Wan wasn’t as hungry as usual. She had snacked on so many things on her way home that by the time dinner came around, she ate less than before.
After eating dinner and having some fruit, Cheng Wan settled on the sofa, her round belly resting comfortably as she watched TV.
Guazi meowed and came over, curling up in Cheng Wan’s arms, as usual.
Cheng Wan gently tapped the little cat’s soft pink nose with her finger. Guazi wasn’t bothered at all and nuzzled her head back into Cheng Wan’s arms, looking especially affectionate.
Aunt Pei saw this and couldn’t help but laugh. “This little one is so clingy with you. I took it for a checkup today. Bai Juntang said to do a check every month. Despite its small size, it was so cooperative.”
Cheng Wan smiled, her eyes softening. “It really doesn’t mind people.”
“It’s not just that. The nurses at the clinic love to play with it. It’s such a good little cat.”
“Such a good cat, it deserves some treats then.”
Cheng Wan picked up the cat, which had gotten heavier in her arms, and went to get it some freeze-dried food. In an instant, the little cat became a little tiger, eagerly devouring its food.
They spent the evening watching TV and playing with Guazi, and before they knew it, it was already past 10 p.m.
Aunt Pei finished cleaning up and walked out of the bathroom. Noticing the time, she said, “Wanwan, you should be getting to bed.”
“Mm,” Cheng Wan murmured, glancing at the clock. She turned her head to look out the large window into the yard, but still didn’t see Bai Juntang’s car.
Aunt Pei closed all the windows in the house and drew the curtains on the large window. When she saw Cheng Wan still sitting in the living room, she asked in confusion, “What’s wrong? Aren’t you tired today?”
“Not really,” Cheng Wan replied, gently stroking the sleeping Guazi in her arms. She asked, “Did Bai Juntang say when she would be back?”
“This wasn’t mentioned. With business events, there’s no set time. Maybe after the first round, she’ll have a second, and sometimes she might drink all night and not come home,” Aunt Pei said.
Noticing Cheng Wan’s concern, Aunt Pei reassured her, “Don’t worry. Xiao Li and the other assistants will take care of her. If she gets too drunk and doesn’t come home, she’ll either sleep at the office or at a hotel. You don’t need to worry.”
Cheng Wan heard this and paused for a moment, gently stroking the cat’s head before nodding, “Okay, I’ll go rest now. You should sleep early too, Aunt Pei.”
After placing the little lazy cat in its bed, Cheng Wan went back to her room. She washed up quickly and slipped into bed.
Though it was only 10 p.m., Cheng Wan couldn’t sleep. Bai Juntang had always told her to go to bed early and wake up early, so even though she couldn’t fall asleep, she stayed in bed.
She placed her hand on her growing belly, and the slight roundness made her feel a little dizzy. She remembered what Chang Le had said earlier—if she could have a little girl, that would be wonderful.
But would Bai Juntang’s family want a boy?
Or perhaps they would prefer an alpha?
The lamp on her bedside table was still on, and Cheng Wan stared at the empty ceiling, her hand gently stroking her belly.
At some point, she drifted off to sleep.
By the time Bai Juntang returned home, it was almost midnight. Her assistant drove her back and then left. Bai Juntang tugged at the collar of her shirt—summer nights were still stifling, and she felt uncomfortably hot.
She kicked off her shoes as soon as she entered, then went to the kitchen to pour herself a glass of cold water.
She had drunk a bit too much tonight, and her head felt hazy as she finished the water. When she turned around, she saw Guazi, the little cat, standing on the dining table, looking up at her.
Bai Juntang walked over and rubbed the cat’s little head. “Why aren’t you asleep at this hour?” she asked.
Guazi wagged its tail and curiously stared at her.
It was clear that Bai Juntang was quite drunk, talking to the little cat like this.
Of course, Guazi couldn’t answer why it wasn’t asleep, but Bai Juntang didn’t press the question. She simply placed the cup down on the table and stumbled away from the kitchen.
The alcohol had clouded her mind, and all Bai Juntang wanted now was to sleep.
But as soon as she stepped onto the first step of the staircase, something seemed to occur to her. She turned around and headed straight to Cheng Wan’s room. Without a second thought, she reached out and pushed the door open.
Even though she was drunk, Bai Juntang still made sure to check on Cheng Wan.
She looked at the dimly lit room, the soft bed where Cheng Wan lay peacefully asleep. Bai Juntang’s mood lifted, and she quietly walked over, climbing into bed. Gently, she pulled Cheng Wan into her arms, and only then did she feel truly at ease, falling into a contented sleep.
