How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 36
While Cheng Wan changed in the fitting room, Bai Juntang picked out a few more loose dresses for her.
The one she liked most was a pale-yellow floral dress. It looked especially gentle and suited Cheng Wan’s temperament perfectly. Even the sales attendants praised Bai Juntang for her excellent taste.
“This dress is perfect for her,” one of them said.
Perhaps it was because Bai Juntang’s elegance was so remarkable. In a society where alphas were still rare, it was even rarer to find one as beautiful and graceful as her.
As soon as Bai Juntang entered the store, she immediately drew the attention of the sales associates, who gathered around her.
Bai Juntang usually shopped at high-end boutiques and didn’t often browse stores like this. But when Cheng Wan found out that this store offered very comfortable clothes with loose fits, perfect for pregnant women—she suggested coming here.
However, with three or four sales associates crowding around Bai Juntang, she started to feel uncomfortable.
She considered releasing some pheromones to push them away, but since they were all betas, they wouldn’t be able to smell them, which left her feeling frustrated.
Just then, Cheng Wan came out of the fitting room, having finished trying on clothes. She was standing in front of the mirror.
The long T-shirt covered her waist, revealing her smooth, slender legs and knees. She had her back to Bai Juntang, adjusting the outfit.
Cheng Wan reached down and gently touched her belly. Her small bump, now at four months, was impossible to hide. Thankfully, the T-shirt was loose enough that it wasn’t too obvious.
Bai Juntang walked over and looked at Cheng Wan in the mirror, asking, “Do you like this outfit?”
Cheng Wan nodded. “It feels really comfortable.”
This T-shirt was versatile enough to wear both at home and out. The style was also very nice. Cheng Wan glanced at the price, and it wasn’t expensive, so she thought it was definitely worth buying.
Bai Juntang handed her a few more clothes she had picked out and gently said, “Try these on as well.”
Cheng Wan looked at the clothes—one was a pale yellow floral dress, and there was also a pair of wide-leg pants with a lavender top.
“Wow, you two really have a good relationship,” one of the sales attendants said as she walked over, holding a black skirt in her hand. She said to Cheng Wan, “This skirt would look great on you! Your legs are so slim, it’s perfect for a short skirt.”
Cheng Wan was a bit taken aback. She didn’t particularly like wearing short skirts, as she usually wore pants or long dresses.
As an Omega, she had always been cautious about wearing short skirts or thin clothes. Even in the middle of summer, she would try to cover up as much as possible. Seeing the short skirt, which barely reached her forearms, Cheng Wan’s face turned slightly red, and she shook her head. “I don’t need it.”
Bai Juntang also said, “We don’t need a short skirt. Let’s try on these two first.”
Cheng Wan nodded and went into the fitting room to change.
The sales attendant, seeing Cheng Wan enter the fitting room, followed Bai Juntang and asked, “Is that Omega yours? She looks like she’s pregnant—how many months along is she?”
Bai Juntang replied calmly, “Four months.”
“No wonder,” the sales attendant said with a smile, “Usually, Omega in their later months don’t go out much. They stay at home getting ready for the baby.” She smiled even wider. “I hope your Omega gives birth to a healthy alpha baby.”
Upon hearing this, Bai Juntang turned and looked at her. The sales attendant shivered under her gaze, unsure if she had said something wrong.
“Omega don’t belong to anyone,” Bai Juntang said coldly. “And I don’t care whether the baby is an alpha or an Omega.”
The sales attendant didn’t quite understand where she had gone wrong but forced a smile and said, “Alphas are exceptional people. If you have an alpha baby, it would make your Omega proud, wouldn’t it?”
“Face isn’t earned by having an alpha baby. It’s earned through your own efforts,” Bai Juntang replied, her tone firm.
She didn’t say anything more to the sales attendant and walked over to the fitting room. She knocked on the door and asked softly, “Are you done?”
Cheng Wan gave a small “mm” in response and opened the door, stepping out in the pale yellow floral dress.
The dress was really beautiful. It complemented Cheng Wan’s smooth, fair skin, making her look like a porcelain doll.
The sales attendants around them were immediately struck by her appearance. When they first entered, they had been drawn to Bai Juntang, who exuded both power and elegance, immediately capturing everyone’s attention.
But now, Cheng Wan, dressed casually in a long skirt, gave off an entirely different vibe.
Her gentle aura seemed to radiate from her very being, and the beta sales attendants couldn’t help but be drawn to her. If it weren’t for her pregnancy, she would surely have been very popular.
Cheng Wan looked up at Bai Juntang, shyly asking, “How do I look?”
“Very beautiful,” Bai Juntang said, wrapping her arm around Cheng Wan’s waist. They stood side by side in front of the mirror—one tall, one delicate, and the contrast made them look perfectly matched.
Bai Juntang asked, “Do you like this one? Should I grab the pants too?”
“The pants are a bit tight,” Cheng Wan replied, gently touching her belly. “I think I prefer wearing skirts.”
“Alright, then we’ll get these two.”
Bai Juntang released Cheng Wan and walked to the front to pay. Cheng Wan changed back into her own clothes.
After shopping at this store, Bai Juntang took Cheng Wan to two more maternity and baby stores, where she picked out two soft and comfortable dresses, perfect for sleeping.
It had been a few hours of shopping, and Cheng Wan was starting to feel tired. Her waist was aching, and even though the mall had air conditioning, she still felt uncomfortable.
Bai Juntang didn’t insist on continuing to shop and decided it was time to head home with the things they had bought.
Once they got in the car, Cheng Wan felt drained. She buckled herself into the passenger seat and slouched back, feeling completely lazy and exhausted.
Bai Juntang didn’t rush to drive off. She turned on the air conditioning in the car.
The temperature outside had already reached over thirty degrees—early summer heat.
The car had a lot of space, and as Cheng Wan leaned back in the passenger seat, listening to the hum of the air conditioning, she felt at ease. Her small belly, still just over four months along, was getting more and more noticeable. Despite this, she had become more accustomed to the feeling of carrying it.
Cheng Wan looked over at Bai Juntang and asked, “Are we going home now?”
“Mm,” Bai Juntang replied, glancing at her before softly asking, “What’s wrong? Aren’t you tired? Do you want to go somewhere else?”
“It’s not that I want to go anywhere, I… I’m just hungry.” Cheng Wan said a bit shyly. “Can we stop by the office building before we head home? There’s a stinky tofu stand downstairs, and I really want to eat it. Can we eat it before going home?”
Stinky tofu?
Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan, letting out a helpless sigh. “You can’t eat it in the car. You’ll have to eat it at the shop.”
Cheng Wan nodded. She knew how much Bai Juntang cared for her cars. Even though she didn’t know how much they were worth, she had heard Li Chen talk about how they were taken care of regularly, so she understood that they were probably quite expensive. She wouldn’t bring the stinky tofu into the car.
Bai Juntang drove a little out of the way, arriving at the office building where Cheng Wan worked.
Perhaps because it was the weekend, the area was quiet with very few people around. Even the usually crowded café nearby only had four or five people inside.
Bai Juntang parked the car, and Cheng Wan unbuckled her seatbelt and got out.
She walked to a small stall by the side of the road, said a few words to the vendor, and began scanning the code to pay.
Bai Juntang had expected the stinky tofu Cheng Wan mentioned to be from a small shop, perhaps something like a convenience store. She didn’t expect it to be from a roadside stall with no proper seating, and the only option was to stand next to a trash can to eat.
The setting made Bai Juntang frown. She wasn’t particularly bothered by Cheng Wan eating unusual things—whether it was crawfish, barbecue, or even stinky tofu—as long as it was clean and healthy.
But looking at this roadside stall, Bai Juntang couldn’t connect it to the idea of “clean” and “hygienic.”
As she watched the vendor hand Cheng Wan a portion of freshly fried stinky tofu, Cheng Wan’s eyes lit up with excitement as she stood on the side of the road eating. Bai Juntang sighed helplessly, got out of the car, and walked over to her.
Cheng Wan thought Bai Juntang was coming to take some of her food. Instinctively, she raised the small paper cup and asked, “Do you want some?”
Bai Juntang shook her head, then gently pulled Cheng Wan toward her. “Don’t stand here and eat. Come back to the car with me.”
“But if I eat in the car, it’ll smell.”
“I’ll open the window.”
Cheng Wan couldn’t refuse, so she sat in the car, holding the small box of stinky tofu. She opened the window and started eating in small bites.
Bai Juntang rested her elbow on the car window, watching Cheng Wan as she ate, her eyes lighting up as if the stinky tofu were the most delicious thing ever.
The last time Bai Juntang had seen Cheng Wan eat with that much enthusiasm was when she was eating crawfish.
Was roadside food really that good?
Bai Juntang thought to herself in disbelief.
Cheng Wan noticed Bai Juntang staring at her and assumed she didn’t like her eating the stinky tofu. She quickly finished it, even though it was so hot it made her gasp for air.
Finally done, Cheng Wan opened the car door, threw the trash out, and grabbed a bottle of water, drinking it quickly, worried about smelling like the stinky tofu.
“Finished?” Bai Juntang asked, watching Cheng Wan drink the water. She rolled up the car window and turned on the air circulation. “Do you want to buy anything else to eat before we go home?”
“Can we?” Cheng Wan blinked, holding the water. She thought Bai Juntang might just be being polite, so she quickly said, “No, I’m full now. I just really wanted to eat this after shopping. Maybe I was just tired from walking around.”
Cheng Wan tried to explain further. “I never used to like it, but recently, I don’t know why, I’ve been craving things I never liked before.”
Especially spicy food. Once the thought came to her, she couldn’t stop thinking about it. She had to eat it right away, and if she didn’t, it felt like she couldn’t bear it.
Bai Juntang, of course, had noticed these changes in her. She simply said, calmly, “Street food isn’t very clean. If you’re not really craving it, it’s better not to eat it.”
Cheng Wan nodded quietly, leaning back in her seat.
Bai Juntang started the car, heading home. It was almost dinnertime, and Cheng Wan wondered what Aunt Pei had made.
As the car pulled onto the road, Cheng Wan’s phone, which had been resting on her lap, rang.
She picked it up and glanced at the screen. Her expression shifted slightly. It was a call from Xu He.
Maybe because Cheng Wan hadn’t responded to the message earlier, Xu He had decided to call. Cheng Wan lowered her gaze, feeling the phone vibrate in her hands, and a slight unease spread through her.
“Are you not going to answer it?” Bai Juntang asked, glancing at her as she focused on the road.
Cheng Wan looked up at Bai Juntang, feeling her ears flush. She quickly pressed the mute button and lowered her voice. “No, it’s probably nothing important.”
Bai Juntang glanced at her but said nothing.
