How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 25
The sharp, intermittent pain in Cheng Wan’s lower abdomen soon turned into a heavy, dragging pain. By the time Chang Le noticed, Cheng Wan was already crouched on the floor, unable to straighten up.
“Wanwan, what’s wrong?” Chang Le crouched beside her, anxiously watching her. She reached out and wiped the cold sweat from Cheng Wan’s forehead, desperately asking, “Are you feeling unwell? Should I take you to the hospital?”
No matter how much Cheng Wan tried to endure, she couldn’t hold on any longer. The pain had become so intense that she could barely see anything in front of her.
Maybe it was because of the overtime and fieldwork over the past few days, but Cheng Wan’s body was getting worse. Her appetite had also been poor; eating just one meal a day had become a rare achievement.
“My stomach hurts…” Cheng Wan closed her eyes in fear. She gripped Chang Le’s hand tightly and, with a noticeable tremble in her voice, said, “Take me to the hospital… please, to the hospital…”
When the staff helped Cheng Wan onto the ambulance, she lay on the stretcher, faintly hearing voices around her.
“Relax, relax. Don’t worry, we’re in the car now. Everything will be fine.”
The nurse gently reassured Cheng Wan, stroking her head. “Let’s check your blood pressure and heart rate first. Your stomach really hurts, doesn’t it? Don’t worry, we’ll be at the hospital soon.”
While comforting her, the nurse administered some emergency sedatives.
Perhaps the medication started working, as Cheng Wan felt the pain in her body lessen, enough to let her take a deep breath.
The nurse continued to gently stroke Cheng Wan’s head, softly asking, “Is it better now?”
Cheng Wan nodded. Her face was pale, her eyes tightly shut, and she whispered to the nurse, “I… I’m three months pregnant…”
After that, Cheng Wan didn’t know what else to say.
When she first discovered this situation, she had felt completely overwhelmed. She even thought about secretly buying the morning-after pill, but Xu He stopped her. It wasn’t until the pregnancy test results came in that she realized there was already a developing baby inside her.
Even so, Cheng Wan could never bring herself to feel any affection for it. In her mind, this child was nothing but proof of her being used, a reminder of how it had tortured both herself and Bai Juntang. It had forced two strangers—who had never met before—into each other’s lives.
Maybe, in the future, she and Bai Juntang would suffer because of this child for the rest of their lives.
Maybe, like her biological mother, she would one day abandon the child in an orphanage for one reason or another.
Either option was something Cheng Wan couldn’t accept, and as a result, she couldn’t accept the child growing inside her either.
But today, she suddenly felt a surge of fear.
The pain made her terrified. What if the baby was lost because of all the work she had been doing?
That tiny life, no bigger than the size of a palm, was about to end inside her, and Cheng Wan was gripped with fear.
Even though she had never wanted it before, it was still her child.
It had been growing inside her for three months—how could she not care for it?
When Cheng Wan woke up, the first thing she saw was an unfamiliar ceiling and the sounds of chatter around her.
She felt disoriented, unsure of where she was or what had happened. All she remembered was organizing the event at the mall, working nonstop all day, and then, when the pain in her stomach became too much to bear, being rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
She couldn’t recall what happened after that. She felt as though she had lost consciousness.
What happened to the baby?
Instinctively, Cheng Wan reached down to touch her stomach, but she soon realized someone had taken her wrist and gently placed her hand back at her side.
“Why are you moving so much right after waking up?”
A familiar voice spoke beside her, and Cheng Wan turned her head instinctively. There, sitting by her hospital bed, was Bai Juntang. Dark circles under her eyes made her look exhausted.
“Miss Bai?” Cheng Wan asked, confused. “What are you doing here?”
“I got a call from your colleague. I booked a flight and came as fast as I could,” Bai Juntang explained, reaching out to touch Cheng Wan’s forehead. She spoke softly but with clear concern. “How could you be so careless?”
Cheng Wan was still processing the situation. She realized that the colleague Bai Juntang referred to must have been Chang Le. But why had Chang Le called Bai Juntang?
She had never told anyone about her relationship with Bai Juntang.
Seeing Cheng Wan’s confusion, Bai Juntang sighed and said, “She must have noticed us talking and texting often, so she thought we were close and called me right away.”
Cheng Wan paused, then nodded slowly, murmuring, “I see…”
During this time, Cheng Wan had been in contact most frequently with Bai Juntang, so it was only natural for Chang Le, who didn’t know Cheng Wan’s family members’ phone numbers, to use Bai Juntang’s phone to call her.
As Cheng Wan thought about this, she quickly used her free hand to touch her stomach, her voice filled with worry, “Where’s the baby? Is the baby still okay?”
“Of course, the baby is fine,” Bai Juntang gently placed her hand over Cheng Wan’s and together they rubbed her slightly swollen belly. “You fainted because of acute gastroenteritis. While I was gone, you must not have been eating properly again, right?”
“Gastroenteritis?” Cheng Wan blinked in confusion, her voice filled with concern, “It’s not because of the baby, is it?”
Bai Juntang couldn’t help but laugh at Cheng Wan’s dazed expression. The sharp, clever girl who usually seemed so composed now looked so confused and kept repeating herself.
Could it really be true that pregnancy is making her lose her mind for a while?
“The baby is fine,” Bai Juntang reassured her, holding her hand gently. “But you—how could you let yourself get into this state? I was only away for a few days, and when I get back, you’re already in the hospital.”
Cheng Wan didn’t know how to explain. She wasn’t one to complain, especially not about work that had been assigned by the company. She felt like she had no right to burden Bai Juntang with her troubles.
“It’s nothing, really… just a bit too busy with work…” Cheng Wan lay back in her bed and slowly asked, “Did you come here right after getting off the plane?”
Bai Juntang nodded, glancing over at her suitcase that was left in the hospital room. “I had everything with me, so there was no need to go home for anything.”
Cheng Wan saw the silver suitcase and immediately felt guilty for causing Bai Juntang so much trouble.
“Sorry, Miss Bai…” Cheng Wan lowered her gaze, apologizing in a soft voice. “I’ve caused you so much trouble. Could you call my family and let them know? Maybe they can come take care of me.”
Bai Juntang remained calm as she replied, “Do you think it’s your foster parents who will come take care of you, or your arrogant sister?”
Cheng Wan was stunned, looking up at her in surprise. She was about to ask something but swallowed her words.
It made sense now. Bai Juntang could easily access her information with a word. Perhaps she had known from the start and had just kept quiet.
Seeing Cheng Wan’s downcast expression, Bai Juntang softened her voice. “You’ve been asleep for over ten hours. Are you hungry?”
Only then did Cheng Wan realize how hungry she was.
Bai Juntang stood up and said, “You stay here and rest. The nurse will come to change your IV. I’ll go get you something to eat. What would you like?”
“I… I want some noodles.”
“Okay.”
When Bai Juntang left the room, Cheng Wan noticed the faint scent of cedarwood pheromones in the air. Had Bai Juntang been releasing her pheromones to comfort herself all this time?
Lying in the bed, Cheng Wan gently touched her stomach.
It felt like such a relief to know the baby was safe.
When Bai Juntang returned with two bowls of beef noodles, Cheng Wan’s IV had just been finished.
As they ate, Cheng Wan learned that she had been unconscious for more than ten hours. It was already the evening of the next day. Chang Le had stayed with her the entire night. When Bai Juntang arrived, she had just gone home, and even helped Cheng Wan get some time off.
When Cheng Wan called Chang Le, her friend immediately started rambling about everything that had happened.
“You have no idea how scared I was! If it weren’t for some of the strong Alpha staff members, I honestly wouldn’t have known what to do!” Chang Le said, clearly concerned. “The doctor said it was acute gastroenteritis. You can’t keep doing this to yourself. Why push yourself so hard for work when the pay isn’t even any better?”
“Yeah, thank you,” Cheng Wan smiled faintly, holding the phone to her ear. “If it weren’t for you, I don’t even know if I’d have made it to the hospital in time. When I’m out, I’ll take you out for a meal.”
“Hey, we’re friends. No need to be so polite.”
Chang Le suddenly lowered her voice and whispered to Cheng Wan, “By the way, when you were in the ambulance, you mentioned you were three months pregnant. Does that have anything to do with the lady who rushed to the hospital to see you?”
Cheng Wan’s face immediately turned bright red. She nervously glanced at Bai Juntang, who was standing by the window talking on the phone. Her ears turned pink as she whispered to Chang Le, “D-Don’t say that…”
“You two are so close, why hide it from me?” Chang Le teased, laughing. “That lady is really beautiful and has such an elegant vibe. When she walked in with her suitcase, I felt like I was watching a drama. You know, the kind where the CEO is all dominant and the sweet little Omega is delicate and soft.”
Cheng Wan’s face turned even redder. She couldn’t bear hearing Chang Le talk about the “dominant CEO and delicate Omega” story. Quickly, she said, “I really hope you can keep the pregnancy a secret for now. I don’t want everyone to know about it just yet.”
“I understand, I understand!” Chang Le replied happily. “I won’t bother you anymore. Get some good rest!”
After hanging up, Cheng Wan still felt heat on her face. She looked at Bai Juntang and wondered to herself—had she really rushed here straight from the airport, suitcase in hand, like Chang Le said?
Did she really mean that much to Bai Juntang?
Or was Bai Juntang just concerned about the baby inside her?
Bai Juntang, feeling Cheng Wan’s intense gaze, turned to see her staring. Their eyes met, and Cheng Wan quickly looked away, suddenly feeling nervous.
“Let’s go with this arrangement for now. I’ll take care of the rest when I get back,” Bai Juntang said, finishing her call. She walked over to Cheng Wan’s bed and noticed her flushed face. Smiling slightly, she teased, “Who were you talking to just now? Your face is so red.”
“D-Do I look that red?” Cheng Wan nervously avoided Bai Juntang’s gaze, clutching the blanket tightly. “Maybe it’s just the heat. I… I’ve been feeling a little off lately… probably just that.”
“Is that so?” Bai Juntang couldn’t resist teasing her more. She sat down beside Cheng Wan and said, “It’s getting late. You remember what Dr. Huang told us, right?”
Cheng Wan looked up at her, about to ask what she meant, but then suddenly realized what Bai Juntang was talking about.
The only thing Dr. Huang had mentioned was that she and Bai Juntang should exchange pheromones more often—two or three times a week. And now, it seemed like it was time.
