How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 115
Fan City barely had spring or autumn. Almost without noticing, winter had already arrived.
The apartment’s heating had been turned on. Although Cheng Wan felt a little guilty about the heating bill, winters in this city were just too hard to get through without it. And lately, she had become especially sensitive to the cold. She even dressed more warmly at home than when she went out.
As December began, the temperature dropped below freezing. It was the kind of weather that made you shiver the moment you stepped outside.
And yet, on a day like this, Bai Juntang invited her to a business gala.
Not long ago, Li Chen had come to her place with a designer to take her measurements. The whole process took less than thirty minutes, and they left quickly. When they returned, they brought a beautifully made, pale blue gown.
Cheng Wan didn’t know what kind of fabric it was, but it felt soft and smooth, almost like animal fur. It slid easily through her fingers.
With her naturally slim figure, the dress suited her perfectly. It covered her less flattering features and showed off her delicate collarbones and slender neck. It looked stunning on her.
Tonight was the gala, and Bai Juntang was coming to pick her up. Cheng Wan only ate a small piece of bread for dinner. She was afraid that if she ate too much, the tight-fitting dress wouldn’t look right.
Even though she wasn’t exactly excited about going to the gala with Bai Juntang, she couldn’t say no after so much coaxing. And since she had agreed, she wanted to take it seriously. Cheng Wan was someone who tried to do her best, no matter the situation.
Bai Juntang arrived downstairs at four o’clock. Her appointment with the stylist was at four-thirty, so time was already tight.
“Time’s a bit tight. President Bai, should we have the stylist go to the hotel or Miss Cheng’s apartment?” Li Chen asked. “There’s no time to stop by the studio now, and if there’s traffic later, we’ll be even more delayed.”
This gala was an important one. With the year ending, company executives were all extremely busy. But the fact that they were still making time to attend meant it was an opportunity no one wanted to miss.
“Let’s go to the hotel,” Bai Juntang said. “Find a nearby one that works. Tell the team to bring everything they need so we don’t waste any time.”
Li Chen nodded and called the stylist. Meanwhile, the driver parked outside the apartment, and Bai Juntang headed upstairs.
When the doorbell rang, Cheng Wan quickly came over and opened the door.
“You’re here,” Cheng Wan said, letting her in. She glanced at Bai Juntang, who looked a little tired from rushing around, and noticed she wasn’t carrying anything. “Aren’t we going to the gala today? Where’s your dress? In the car?”
“We’re doing makeup soon. The team is already on the way. I just came to pick you up,” Bai Juntang said as she picked up the glass Cheng Wan had left on the coffee table and poured herself a drink.
Cheng Wan glanced at the glass. She had just used it moments ago. Thinking about it made her ears flush a little red, so she quickly changed the subject. “So… should we rest for a bit, or head out now?”
“Let’s rest. The appointment’s at four-thirty. We still have a few minutes,” Bai Juntang said, sitting down and patting the seat next to her. “Come sit. Standing there for no reason is just tiring.”
But Cheng Wan didn’t sit down. Instead, she brought out a plate of fruit she had already washed and placed it on the table.
“This is my first time going to something like this,” she said softly. “I don’t really know how things work at a gala. If I do anything wrong, you’ll have to let me know.”
Bai Juntang smiled and took her hand. “There are actually a lot of unspoken rules, and I can’t explain them all in one go. Even if I did, I’m not sure you’d remember them all. Just stick close to me. You’ll be fine.”
Cheng Wan thought that made sense. Right now, the only person she could rely on was Bai Juntang anyway so she nodded.
Bai Juntang’s thoughts were simple. She knew Cheng Wan didn’t understand the complexities of the business world. She just wanted her to stay close, like a little tail following her around.
Of course, she wasn’t going to say that out loud. Instead, she reassured Cheng Wan, “If you get tired, we’ll find a place to sit. The buffet food there is also really good.”
Then she asked, “Have you eaten anything yet?”
Cheng Wan shook her head. “I was afraid if I ate, I’d get a belly.”
“No way. You’re already so thin. If you had a belly, that’d just be unfair.”
“I still have a little one.”
“I’ll make you something,” Bai Juntang said, standing up. “You can’t go without food. Let me check your fridge.”
Before Cheng Wan could stop her, Bai Juntang had already stepped into the kitchen.
The kitchen was small, and so was the fridge. There wasn’t much in it. After looking through it, Bai Juntang found a few tomatoes and some eggs.
“How about tomato and egg noodles?” she called out. “You don’t have much else here.”
“There’s instant noodles,” Cheng Wan said as she glanced at the time. “It’s already late. By the time you finish cooking, it’ll be four-thirty. I’m really not that hungry. You don’t have to make anything.”
“It’ll only take a few minutes.” Bai Juntang had already started boiling water. She turned around, smiled at Cheng Wan, and said, “Just wait out there. Brew some tea. On a cold day like this, a bowl of noodles and a hot drink is exactly what we need.”
She even gently pushed Cheng Wan out of the kitchen.
Cheng Wan looked at the clock, hoping they could finish eating and leave within twenty minutes.
While she made the tea, she glanced out the window and noticed white flakes drifting from the grey sky like tiny feathers slowly falling.
It was snowing.
She walked to the balcony and looked outside. The snow had just started, so the roads weren’t covered yet. Down below, people had already come out with their phones, taking pictures of the season’s first snow.
The sounds from the kitchen, the warmth from the heater, and the falling snow outside made Cheng Wan feel like she was in another world.
Outside, there might be wind or snow, but everything was shut out by that one door.
And this… this might be the moment she had always longed for.
A small home, a warm space, snow falling gently outside, it was enough to make even her fingertips feel warm.
She turned her head to look at Bai Juntang, busy in the kitchen.
This was the person she loved. Could she also be the person who would become her most important family?
Cheng Wan’s heart, never firm to begin with, wavered even more in that quiet, peaceful moment.
Bai Juntang cooked quickly. She had made tomato and egg noodles so many times before that it only took her a few minutes. She filled two steaming bowls, carried them out of the kitchen, and placed them on the small dining table that could just barely fit two people.
“Dinner’s ready. I just got a call saying there’s a bit of traffic. If we eat now, we’ll still be right on schedule,” Bai Juntang said as she took off her apron. She looked at Cheng Wan with a smile. “Come try it. See if my cooking has changed.”
Cheng Wan looked at her, walked over, and caught the rich scent of the noodles. She stood quietly for a while before finally saying, “It’s snowing outside.”
Bai Juntang glanced toward the window. “You’re right.”
“No wonder there’s traffic,” she added, then gently pulled Cheng Wan closer. “Come eat. I’ll grab some pickled vegetables from the fridge.”
Cheng Wan sat down and looked at the bowl in front of her, steam rising into the warm air. Her heart felt even more unsettled than before.
She hadn’t planned to eat. She thought it wouldn’t matter either way. But after stepping out into the freezing wind, she was genuinely thankful that Bai Juntang had made the noodles. Otherwise, in this near-zero weather, she would have been freezing.
Once they got into the car, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but complain, “This snow just keeps getting heavier.”
Cheng Wan climbed into the backseat. When she shut the door, she could still feel the lingering cold. She shook her head, brushing the snow off her hair.
The driver focused on the road while Li Chen sat in the front seat. He turned around and greeted her with a warm smile.
“Good evening, Miss Cheng. The stylist has already gone ahead to the hotel. Once we’re done with hair and makeup, we can head straight to the gala.”
Cheng Wan had never been to this kind of event. The mention of styling made her freeze for a second. “Is that really necessary?”
“It’s better if we do,” Li Chen replied. “Most of the guests are top executives and quite a few celebrities. And the dress designed for you is stunning. With the right makeup and styling, you’ll stand out for sure.”
Cheng Wan was a little surprised by his words. She turned to Bai Juntang. “Is the event really that formal?”
“It’s not too bad,” Bai Juntang said as she gently wiped the melting snow off Cheng Wan’s shoulder. “Just stick close to me. All you need to do is smile.”
Cheng Wan nodded, still feeling unsure. Smiling the entire night sounded exhausting.
When they arrived at the hotel, Cheng Wan saw the same white gown she had tried on before. Next to it, on a rack, was a black dress. She guessed that one belonged to Bai Juntang.
Maybe because the event was formal, the stylists took their work even more seriously.
They started getting ready around five in the evening. Two stylists worked on them at the same time. Even so, it took until after six to finish their hair, makeup, and final touches.
Cheng Wan stood in front of a large floor-to-ceiling mirror in the hotel, staring at their reflection in a bit of a daze.
“Do we look good?” Bai Juntang asked as she wrapped her arm around Cheng Wan’s waist, gently pulling her in. She tilted her head slightly and looked at the mirror with a smile. “I think we’re a perfect match. The moment we walk in, anyone with eyes will know we’re together.”
That was exactly the effect Bai Juntang wanted.
Cheng Wan looked at their reflections in the mirror, one dressed in black and the other in white. Both gowns were decorated with shimmering rhinestones, sparkling like stars and moonlight.
“It looks really beautiful…” Cheng Wan blinked. She didn’t say that each dress looked great on its own, but together they almost looked too striking, like a dramatic black-and-white pair. Of course, she wasn’t foolish. She could see how much effort Bai Juntang had put into their outfits. Naturally, she didn’t want to ruin her mood.
Bai Juntang was clearly pleased. She asked Li Chen to take a photo of them together. But after checking the pictures, she wasn’t satisfied, so she took the phone herself and snapped a few better shots in front of the mirror.
After taking the photos, she sent them to Cheng Wan and smiled at her.
“It’s about time. Let’s head out.”
Before they left, the stylists draped thick fur-lined shawls over both of them to keep them warm in the cold weather.
The snow outside had gotten even heavier. From the car, Cheng Wan could already see it piling up along the streets. The radio said the snow might continue all night.
Maybe it was because of rush hour, or maybe it was the slippery roads, but no one was driving fast. The car moved slowly through the traffic, and it was almost seven by the time they reached the venue.
Bai Juntang held Cheng Wan close and turned to the driver and Li Chen. “You two can go find somewhere to rest. We’ll call you when we need the car again.”
Then she stepped out of the car with Cheng Wan.
As the snowflakes landed on Cheng Wan’s fingers, she looked up and saw the grand entrance of the hotel in front of them. It was three or four stories tall and looked almost like a palace.
