How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 114
The morning sunlight poured in through a small gap in the thick curtains. When the apartment was first renovated, the curtain installation hadn’t been done properly, leaving a narrow slit on the second layer. Every morning, sunlight would stream through that exact spot.
Cheng Wan was woken by the sound of a door closing in the hallway. A moment later, she heard a few people chatting and laughing as their voices gradually faded into the distance.
So it’s already morning…
Still lying in bed and feeling a little groggy, Cheng Wan noticed that she had slept especially well the night before. Surrounded by a familiar pheromone scent, she had fallen asleep feeling comforted. Even her body felt much more relaxed.
Pheromones?
She slowly remembered that Bai Juntang had come to her place last night.
Cheng Wan sat up and looked around the dim room. As soon as she looked down, she saw someone sleeping beside her, which startled her wide awake.
Bai Juntang was lying to the side, wrapped in the blanket. Probably because Cheng Wan had moved around too much, she slowly opened her eyes.
“Why are you getting up so early?” Bai Juntang reached out, pulled her back under the blanket, and tucked her in. Then she leaned in close, her breath brushing against Cheng Wan’s ear. “The alarm hasn’t gone off yet. We can still sleep for a while.”
Cheng Wan was forced to lie back down. Still half-awake, she asked in confusion, “Why are you sleeping here?”
“It’s freezing. Did you really expect me to sleep on the couch?” Bai Juntang mumbled with her eyes closed, holding Cheng Wan’s hand under the blanket. “One night on that sofa and I’d freeze my brain out.”
Cheng Wan frowned. “I mean, why didn’t you go home last night?”
Bai Juntang opened her eyes, looked at her, and gently squeezed her hand. “I never planned to go home.”
“You…” Cheng Wan’s face turned red with frustration. “So are you planning to stay here again today?”
“Not today. I have an important meeting. I asked Li Chen to pick me up downstairs a little after eight.” Bai Juntang looked at her for a moment, then said quietly, “Cheng Wan, why didn’t you tell me your health is getting worse?”
Cheng Wan froze slightly and lifted her eyes to meet hers.
Bai Juntang reached out and gently pulled her into a hug under the covers, pressing her forehead to Cheng Wan’s. “I saw the medical reports you left on the cabinet by the door. I asked my personal doctor about them last night. She said your condition isn’t good. All your test results are below average. You really need to rest more.”
Knowing she couldn’t hide it any longer, Cheng Wan nodded. “The doctor told me to stay in bed. I’ve already rested for several days, and I do feel better.”
Bai Juntang looked at her helplessly, gently touching Cheng Wan’s cheek as their eyes met. “I also saw the guidebook on pheromone mark removal.”
Cheng Wan froze. Even though she had just picked up the book out of curiosity, she still felt uneasy knowing Bai Juntang had seen it.
It almost felt like… betrayal.
“Pheromone mark removal is really hard on the body. I don’t think you could handle that kind of pain. And there’s a high risk of complications afterward,” Bai Juntang said softly. “There’s no reason for us to go that far, is there?”
When she saw that guide last night, Bai Juntang’s first reaction was shock, followed quickly by anxiety.
She knew she had no right to be angry. After all, it was her own careless words that made Cheng Wan think the divorce was already final. She had been thinking about finding the right time to explain everything to Cheng Wan. And now, it seemed that time had come.
Cheng Wan kept her head down, avoiding her gaze. In a quiet voice, she said, “I was just asking. Even if I wanted the procedure, I’d have to wait until a year after the divorce is finalized.”
“We never actually got divorced.”
Bai Juntang cupped Cheng Wan’s face gently. “When I told you I signed the papers, I was just angry. We never filed anything.”
Cheng Wan looked up in surprise. “But I gave you the divorce application…”
“And just because you gave it to me, I’m supposed to sign it?” Bai Juntang pinched her cheek and leaned closer. “I only thought we needed some time apart to cool off. Did you really think I would just sign without a second thought?”
Cheng Wan looked at her. A wave of warmth and confusion filled her heart, leaving her feeling flustered.
“I’ve only ever loved one person in my life, and that’s you,” Bai Juntang said. “We finally registered our marriage. Why would I leave right after we had a child? Do you really see me as someone who would abandon my wife and daughter?”
Cheng Wan looked even more unsettled. “But we’re not right for each other…”
“Isn’t that something both of us should decide?” Bai Juntang said, pressing her forehead to Cheng Wan’s again. “You didn’t even say anything before handing me divorce papers. Honestly, I think you’re the heartless one. You’re the one abandoning your wife and daughter.”
She said it jokingly, even giving Cheng Wan’s cheek a small squeeze.
Cheng Wan blushed deeply, struggling to explain. “Don’t say that. I just… I just…”
In the end, she couldn’t find the words. With how things had gone so far, she really did look like the one who had walked away. Bai Juntang wasn’t wrong.
Cheng Wan’s blush faded. Her eyes reddened at the corners, and when she turned on her side to look at Bai Juntang, she looked delicate and sorrowful.
“What’s the use of crying?” Bai Juntang huffed, but still pulled her into a gentle embrace. “We’ve already argued, already fought. I really don’t feel good about you living here alone. Why don’t you just come home with me? Sui Sui, Aunt Pei, and… my mom, they’re all waiting for you.”
Cheng Wan buried her face in Bai Juntang’s chest, saying nothing. She was genuinely afraid of Bai Weilan. That woman was Bai Juntang’s mother, not hers. Cheng Wan had a deep psychological shadow when it came to the word “mother.”
“I’m sorry,” Cheng Wan mumbled, her voice muffled. “I don’t want to go back yet.”
Bai Juntang didn’t respond. Just then, the alarm clock on the nightstand went off. She let go of Cheng Wan and sat up.
The alarm was loud and irritating. Bai Juntang brushed her hair back, grabbed the phone to turn it off, and said, “We’ll talk about this later. I need to get up. There’s something I need to talk to you about later.”
Cheng Wan wasn’t sure if Bai Juntang was angry. She just watched as she got dressed and went downstairs.
Lying under the warm blanket, Cheng Wan could still smell the familiar pheromone scent lingering in the air. It gave her a sense of peace and comfort.
Bai Juntang spent some time fumbling around on the first floor. With no toothbrush or towel, she could only freshen up using mouthwash and tissues. When she opened the fridge and saw how little food there was, she raised her voice and asked, “What do you want for breakfast? I can go downstairs and grab something.”
Cheng Wan came downstairs when she heard her. “There’s sliced bread and milk in the fridge. If that’s not enough, I can go buy some breakfast from the bun shop downstairs.”
“Why are you out of bed?” Bai Juntang looked over at her and said, “I can go. Didn’t the doctor tell you to stay in bed and rest?”
Cheng Wan looked a little embarrassed. “You said you had something to talk to me about. Besides, I’ve been lying around for days, and it’s starting to wear me out.”
Bai Juntang gave her a long look, then sighed. “Go wash up. I’ll have Li Chen bring us some breakfast.”
After Cheng Wan finished washing up, Bai Juntang had also changed and was now sitting at the dining table, sipping a cup of Americano.
“I found this in your drawer. I figured it was okay to drink?” she asked.
Cheng Wan nodded. She had bought it when she first moved in but had only drunk two cups. She found it too bitter and never touched it again.
“Li Chen will be downstairs in ten minutes. Let’s talk about something else in the meantime,” Bai Juntang said, sitting upright and looking directly at Cheng Wan. “I didn’t want to have such a serious conversation, but some things have to be said clearly.”
She continued, “I don’t agree to the divorce, and I won’t sign the papers. So legally, we’re still a couple. I can accept you moving out and living alone, but as your Alpha, I have the right to care for you. So from now on, I’ll be coming over to check on you every day.”
Cheng Wan’s ears turned slightly red. She hesitated, then said, “But…”
“But there’s nothing of mine here, no toothbrush or anything,” Bai Juntang said, blinking with a playful glint in her eyes. “So today I’ll have my assistant bring over the things I need. Just the basics, like toiletries and a few changes of clothes. It won’t take up much space.”
Cheng Wan stared at her blankly, unsure how to refuse.
Bai Juntang figured there wasn’t much else to say, so she added one last thing. “There’s a business gala coming up soon. It’s being held nearby. You’ll need to attend with me.”
“A business gala? Why do I need to go?” Cheng Wan asked, confused.
“We just held Sui Sui’s one-month celebration a few months ago. People in our circle see us as the perfect couple,” Bai Juntang said with a smile tugging at her lips. “Can you give me the honor of being seen with you again?”
“But I don’t have anything to wear…”
“A tailor will come by this afternoon to take your measurements.”
Bai Juntang’s eyes sparkled with amusement. “I hope our outfits look great together.”
Li Chen dutifully brought up buns, fried dough sticks, and soy milk. Since the meeting that day was very important, Bai Juntang didn’t stay at the apartment for long. After finishing breakfast, she headed straight to the company.
The morning meeting dragged on endlessly. In the afternoon, her assistant arrived with clothing and a guest.
“President Bai, here’s your evening gown.” Xiaomi carried a suitcase into the lounge area, found a clothing rack, and started unpacking. “Assistant Li went to measure Miss Cheng’s size. This is the designer, here to help adjust your dress.”
Bai Juntang nodded and tried on the black gown.
The dress was long, with a sweeping train. But the front was designed in a way that didn’t interfere with walking. The rhinestones on the gown shimmered even under the office lighting.
Her figure was stunning — tall, elegant, and confident. A silk scarf tied at her neckline and a pair of specially designed high heels completed the look. She looked every bit like a celebrity, dazzling and poised.
“So sparkly,” Bai Juntang said, clearly pleased. She loved the long train; it made her feel like a mermaid — a sparkling black mermaid.
The designer smiled and said, “President Bai, the dress fits you perfectly. On the night of the gala, once your styling is done, you’ll look every bit as glamorous as a movie star.”
Bai Juntang didn’t respond directly, but she clearly enjoyed the compliment. She loved hearing people praise her beauty.
“Just adjust the areas I pointed out earlier,” she said, changing back into her regular clothes and watching them pack up. “What about my partner’s dress? How are you designing it?”
The designer smiled knowingly. “We’ll make sure it’s perfect. Once the two of you walk in together, everyone will know you’re meant to be.”
