How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 111
Bai Juntang had indeed come out for a business meeting, but she had also used the opportunity to spend time with Cheng Wan.
With Sui Sui left in Cheng Wan’s care, the entire afternoon was spent just the two of them together. Cheng Wan helped her nap, fed her when she woke up, and played with her in the sun using small toys. Before she knew it, the afternoon had slipped by.
Even though Sui Sui was still so young, her instincts naturally drew her closer to her mother. In just one afternoon, she seemed to have remembered Cheng Wan’s scent. When Bai Juntang returned, Sui Sui didn’t even look at her. Instead, her tiny eyes stayed fixed on Cheng Wan, and she giggled to herself even without being entertained.
Watching her daughter act like that, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but smile. “What’s this little fool laughing at all by herself?”
Because of Sui Sui, Cheng Wan’s attitude toward Bai Juntang had softened. Seeing the baby laugh so happily, she smiled too. “Maybe she saw something funny.”
Bai Juntang sat down beside her and looked at her quietly.
Cheng Wan glanced up, puzzled.
“Cheng Wan,” Bai Juntang said gently, reaching out to hold the hand resting on Cheng Wan’s knee. Her dark, bright eyes looked into hers. “You haven’t had dinner yet, have you? I reserved a table at a restaurant downstairs. Let’s go with Sui Sui. After dinner, we’ll head home.”
Home. That word hit a nerve.
The look in Cheng Wan’s eyes made it clear to Bai Juntang that she didn’t want to say goodbye.
“If it’s hard for you to part with Sui Sui, then maybe we could—”
“No,” Cheng Wan interrupted, shaking her head. She looked at Bai Juntang and said, “You should take her back. She’s tired from the afternoon. I can’t take care of her on my own. She’s better off with you.”
Bai Juntang looked at her deeply for a moment, then nodded. “The reservation is already made. Let’s at least have dinner together. Consider it my way of thanking you for looking after Sui Sui this afternoon.”
Cheng Wan looked down at Sui Sui. Although her words said to let them go, her heart still struggled. She couldn’t bring herself to reject Bai Juntang’s invitation, so she quietly nodded in agreement.
The restaurant Bai Juntang had chosen was a high-end Cantonese place in the nearby shopping district. It was busy and lively.
When the staff saw them arrive with a baby, they led them to a private room in the back and even provided a baby crib. It was quiet and peaceful—perfect for a calm dinner.
Bai Juntang ordered a selection of light and flavorful dishes. Sitting next to Cheng Wan, she picked up a shrimp dumpling with her chopsticks and placed it in Cheng Wan’s bowl. “Let Sui Sui lie down in the crib for a bit. You should eat first. You’ll have plenty of time to play with her after dinner.”
Cheng Wan was reluctant to put Sui Sui down, but Bai Juntang’s gentle suggestion made her feel a bit embarrassed. She finally laid the baby in the crib prepared by the staff and sat down to eat.
“This restaurant is part of a chain,” Bai Juntang said as she thoughtfully added food to Cheng Wan’s plate. “There used to be one near our old home too. Do you remember? I noticed back then that you liked their shrimp, so I made sure to order some today. Eat as much as you want.”
Cheng Wan didn’t refuse. She reached out to peel the shrimp herself, but Bai Juntang beat her to it.
Watching Bai Juntang seriously peel each shrimp and place them in front of her, Cheng Wan didn’t know what kind of expression she should show.
It reminded her of the past. Bai Juntang had always looked after her this way during meals, making sure everything was ready and easy for her to eat.
Cheng Wan wasn’t used to being cared for. Whenever someone was even a little kind to her, she would remember it for a long time. Of course she remembered Bai Juntang peeling shrimp for her, serving her rice. She had thought she’d forgotten those memories, but now they came rushing back and caught her completely off guard.
They shared a quiet meal. Bai Juntang did most of the talking, while Cheng Wan listened quietly, eating slowly and thoughtfully. When she finished her bowl, Bai Juntang gently refilled it for her.
They spent almost an hour at dinner. Toward the end, Sui Sui started getting restless, and only then did they reluctantly prepare to leave.
After securing Sui Sui in the back seat’s baby carrier, the little one began to spit bubbles in protest, clearly not happy.
Bai Juntang sighed. There was nothing she could do. This little rascal always started spitting bubbles when she was upset. It was messy and annoying, and she had no sense of cleanliness at all.
Cheng Wan couldn’t help but laugh, her eyes curving into gentle crescents. She took a bib from the side pocket and wiped Sui Sui’s mouth, then tucked the cloth into her collar to keep her clean.
Once everything was in place, Bai Juntang shut the back door with a soft click and turned to look at Cheng Wan.
It was past seven, and the sky was completely dark. The parking lot was quiet, with only a few people around. Bai Juntang felt a little bolder in the dim light.
Cheng Wan stood right in front of her. Bai Juntang had been thinking about this moment for a long time. The warm, yellow glow from the ground lights blurred their faces slightly. The breeze stirred their long hair, mixing their scents in the wind.
“Cheng Wan,” Bai Juntang stepped forward and gently took her hand. She noticed Cheng Wan tensed slightly but didn’t pull away.
She tilted her head, looked at her, and smiled softly. “Thank you for taking care of Sui Sui today.”
Cheng Wan met her gaze. She wasn’t naive. She understood why Bai Juntang had brought Sui Sui to her. But she honestly didn’t know how to respond.
Bai Juntang held her warm, soft hand and said in a quiet voice, “I won’t get in your way. You’re free to do what you want. But… Sui Sui and I both need you. Wherever you go, I hope you remember that.”
Cheng Wan felt her breath catch. Her chest trembled with emotion.
Bai Juntang reached up and brushed her cheek gently, then leaned in.
She wasn’t sure if Cheng Wan would welcome a kiss, so she only pressed her lips to the corner of her mouth. It was subtle, respectful, but still full of feeling.
“Go home and rest,” Bai Juntang said softly. “I’ll come see you again in a couple of days.”
Cheng Wan watched as Bai Juntang drove away. She remained standing there for a long time, frozen, until the cold finally crept into her hands and feet. Only then did she come back to herself and realize she needed to go home.
Back in her apartment, Cheng Wan looked around the quiet, empty space. It was only a bit over forty square meters, yet tonight it felt especially lonely.
So quiet she could hear the sound of her own breathing.
Too quiet.
She wondered when this place had become so silent.
Over the next few days, Bai Juntang truly didn’t show up or bother Cheng Wan, giving her some much-needed breathing space.
During that time, Cheng Wan went to another hospital. She registered and saw a different doctor. Just like before, she spent a lot of money on tests. And once again, the results were the same: she was under too much stress. Medication wouldn’t help, what she really needed was rest.
When she heard the diagnosis, Cheng Wan’s delicate eyebrows furrowed tightly.
“Do I really need to rest that much?” she asked, looking at the gentle, kind-faced doctor. “Can’t you at least give me something for the pain? Whenever I get tired, I feel this deep ache in my bones. It hurts so much I can’t do anything.”
The doctor looked at her thin frame and said gently, “You gave birth only a few months ago. The pain is likely from not resting enough. Painkillers won’t fix that. What you really need is proper rest.”
Clutching her bag, Cheng Wan asked with some hesitation, “Isn’t there anything that could ease the pain a little? Would heat packs help?”
The doctor shook his head and asked softly, “Where’s your family?”
Cheng Wan paused. “I… don’t have any. It’s just me.”
The doctor glanced at her, then looked over her medical records again. “It says you had an alpha. Is she not around anymore?”
Cheng Wan looked away and replied, “We separated. We divorced recently.”
“I see,” the doctor said, though he looked doubtful. There wasn’t anything in the records that confirmed whether Cheng Wan was single or not. But he vaguely remembered that Omegas typically couldn’t legally divorce within six months of giving birth, even with mutual agreement.
Still, it wasn’t his place to get involved in personal matters. He sighed and said, “You really do need bed rest. Your condition is serious. You should be resting for at least a full week. Even walking to the bathroom for too long might cause you pain.”
Cheng Wan lowered her head and didn’t say anything. She looked exhausted and quietly helpless.
The doctor sighed again and eventually prescribed her some mild painkillers. “Don’t take these often. They’re not good for your body, and they might cause long-term side effects. The best thing you can do is lie in bed and rest. At least for one week.”
As he quickly wrote up the prescription, he said, “Go pay and pick up your medicine.”
Cheng Wan took the slip of paper but didn’t move.
“What’s wrong?” the doctor asked. “Is there something else?”
Cheng Wan nodded. “I’d like to ask about mark removal surgery.”
“You can’t do that until you’ve been officially divorced for one full year,” the doctor replied. “And we don’t use anesthesia during the procedure. It’s extremely painful. Most Omegas can’t handle it.”
He looked at her small, pale figure and reached over to grab a brochure from a nearby shelf. Handing it to her, he added, “This is the information booklet. Take it home and read through it. Honestly, we don’t usually recommend this surgery. Besides the pain, it can cause lasting side effects that may never fully heal.”
Cheng Wan quietly accepted the booklet. “Thank you. I understand.”
The doctor couldn’t help feeling sympathetic. Life seemed unbearably hard for people like her, and he had no idea what she had gone through. But as a professional, he added one more thing.
“There’s actually another way to achieve what you want.”
Cheng Wan looked up immediately. “There is?”
“It’s called a replacement mark,” he explained. “It means having a different alpha mark you, overriding the original one. Unlike the surgery, this method is safer and doesn’t have long-term side effects. You just need to find an alpha who’s willing to do it.”
“But it’s not easy,” the doctor added. “It can be painful, because your body might instinctively resist it. And it often takes more than one attempt to be successful.”
He looked her in the eye and said gently, “If possible, I’d suggest finding an alpha who suits you and letting them give you a new mark.”
