How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 107
Cheng Wan looked into Bai Juntang’s caring eyes and felt a heavy pressure in her chest, like something was blocking her breath. Her eyes began to sting. As their gazes met, and she saw the concern in Bai Juntang’s dark eyes, her nose burned with emotion.
Why was Bai Juntang still so good to her?
Cheng Wan thought that if Bai Juntang could just be a little colder, it wouldn’t hurt this much.
Now her chest hurt, her head hurt, and even her bones ached.
“Why…”
Cheng Wan’s eyes were red as she stood in the cold wind and asked, “Aren’t we already divorced?”
Bai Juntang was caught off guard and didn’t know how to respond. How could she explain that they weren’t really divorced? That her words back then were just said in anger? In reality, their bond was still the closest in the world.
The face in her hands was cold to the touch. Bai Juntang didn’t answer right away. She first took off her coat and put it on Cheng Wan, then gently rubbed her cold hands. After a moment of hesitation, she said, “Cheng Wan, can I ask you something?”
Cheng Wan lowered her head and sniffled softly.
“Do you like me?” Bai Juntang asked, looking at the top of her head. “We’ve known each other for so long. Have you ever liked me?”
Cheng Wan’s hands were tightly held in hers. She looked up nervously, unsure how to respond.
Bai Juntang leaned in and gently touched her forehead to Cheng Wan’s. Her voice was soft. “Be honest with me. I like you. If you liked me too, then we were truly in love.”
Cheng Wan’s cheeks turned pink, but she couldn’t pull away in this position. She just avoided Bai Juntang’s eyes.
“Even if I did like you… what difference would it make?” Cheng Wan looked down and said, “I think… things are fine the way they are now.”
“They’re not fine.”
Bai Juntang cut her off. She cupped Cheng Wan’s face and said seriously, “A month ago, you liked me, I liked you, and we had Sui Sui. We had everything. But after just one month, you made all of that disappear.”
Cheng Wan opened her mouth to explain, but before she could say a word, Bai Juntang leaned down and kissed her.
After a month without contact, the moment their lips met, it felt like a dry desert receiving the first drop of rain. Bai Juntang held Cheng Wan’s chin and kissed her deeply.
Her tongue moved skillfully and passionately inside Cheng Wan’s mouth, showing just how much she missed her.
Cheng Wan froze. She hadn’t expected Bai Juntang to kiss her. She closed her eyes and instinctively tried to move away, but Bai Juntang only pulled her closer.
“There are people on the street…” Cheng Wan mumbled between kisses, her face bright red. “Someone might see…”
“It’s freezing this late at night. Who else would be out here besides the two of us?”
Bai Juntang’s dark eyes sparkled as she spoke, then kissed her again.
The streetlamp above cast a warm glow over them, stretching their shadows long across the ground.
Cheng Wan had meant to push her away, but the moment she touched Bai Juntang, her resistance faded. It was like Bai Juntang had a magnetic pull that took over her completely.
The kiss lasted for who knew how long. Cheng Wan only knew that her whole body felt warm now. Even the pain in her bones seemed to fade. Her cheeks flushed as she looked at Bai Juntang, unsure what to say.
Just then, a car passed by on the street. Cheng Wan, flustered, quickly buried her face in Bai Juntang’s coat and didn’t dare lift her head.
Bai Juntang breathed in the scent of their mixed pheromones and felt a deep sense of peace.
She held Cheng Wan’s hand, feeling that it wasn’t as cold as before. Her heart softened even more.
“Believe me. I really like you,” Bai Juntang whispered as she hugged her tighter. “I’ve never liked anyone before. You’re the person I care about most. Honestly, I care about you more than my own mother.”
Cheng Wan’s heart raced wildly. She stayed frozen in Bai Juntang’s arms, not daring to move.
The familiar scent of Bai Juntang’s pheromones made Cheng Wan’s nose tingle again, almost bringing her to tears.
Taking advantage of the warm atmosphere, Bai Juntang whispered, “Come back. Sui Sui and I really miss you…”
Cheng Wan felt like the words were right at the tip of her tongue. She wanted to go back. She missed Suisui, and she missed Bai Juntang. That kiss had brought back all their memories. Her time with Bai Juntang had been the happiest period of her life.
Could she say yes?
Even if Bai Juntang was lying, if she never questioned it, Cheng Wan felt she could believe it for the rest of her life.
She tightly gripped the edge of Bai Juntang’s coat and buried her face into her shoulder.
Grrr…
Instead of an answer, Bai Juntang heard the sound of Cheng Wan’s stomach growling.
Cheng Wan’s whole body tensed, and she buried her face even deeper in embarrassment.
Bai Juntang was surprised for a second. Then she leaned close and asked with a smile, “Hungry?”
Blushing, Cheng Wan nodded. She had barely eaten at lunch, slept through dinner, and now she was out in the cold at midnight. Of course she was hungry.
Bai Juntang looked around. She wasn’t too familiar with this area, but figured there should still be some places open even this late.
“Let’s go find something to eat,” Bai Juntang said as she gently adjusted the coat around Cheng Wan. Then she joked, “You’re just like a little kid. Why are you so shy?”
She took Cheng Wan’s hand again, and the two of them walked side by side.
“I’m not,” Cheng Wan muttered. “I can’t help if my stomach growls. It’s just… a little embarrassing.”
The atmosphere had been so tender just moments ago, and then her stomach had to make that noise. Of course she felt awkward.
But in a way, it was a relief. The interruption gave her time to think. She still didn’t know how to answer Bai Juntang’s earlier question, and now she had a moment to gather her thoughts.
Bai Juntang glanced back at her and smiled when their eyes met. As they headed toward the apartment building, she said, “It’s so late. Most restaurants are probably closed. But I remember there’s a convenience store downstairs. If we can’t find anything else, we’ll grab some bread. Or I’ll cook something for you when we get home.”
Cheng Wan nodded. She looked down at their hands tightly clasped together. Her face grew even hotter, and she pulled the coat closer to try to hide her blush.
They walked around the streets for more than ten minutes. Most places were already closed, but luckily, they found a small barbecue shop that was still open.
Maybe because it was so cold, the place was completely empty. The lights were still on, but there wasn’t a single customer inside.
When Bai Juntang led Cheng Wan inside, they saw the owner sitting at a table playing on his phone. He looked up and greeted them casually.
“Sit anywhere you like,” he said as he walked over and placed a laminated menu in front of them. “Take a look and see what you want to eat.”
The menu was old, its edges curled and stained with grease.
Bai Juntang didn’t usually care much about cleanliness, but this small, greasy eatery made her a little uncomfortable. She ordered a few skewers quickly, then passed the menu to Cheng Wan and whispered, “It’s kind of dirty. Just look, don’t touch.”
After the owner went into the kitchen, Bai Juntang checked the time. It was already past midnight. Thankfully, the apartment wasn’t far, and now that the abusive neighbor was no longer a concern, it felt relatively safe to walk back, even this late.
Still, Bai Juntang began wondering if she should come up with a reason to stay the night.
Cheng Wan quietly glanced at her with curious, shifting eyes. She didn’t say anything, but every time Bai Juntang looked at her, she would quickly look away, as if something was on her mind.
The two of them waited quietly for the food to arrive. The first dish was Cheng Wan’s handmade noodles. She asked the owner for two small bowls, served a portion, and placed one in front of Bai Juntang.
“You gave me your coat, you must be cold too,” Cheng Wan said softly. “Eat something warm. It’ll help.”
Bai Juntang smiled. “My shirt is thick, I’m okay. But you… you’ve definitely lost weight since we last saw each other. If Aunt Pei saw you now, she’d be so worried.”
Cheng Wan nodded and lowered her head to eat.
Bai Juntang looked at the small ceramic bowl, pulled a pair of chopsticks from the holder, rinsed them with hot water, and began eating.
More dishes arrived one by one. Looking at the food, Bai Juntang couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable. She knew she couldn’t expect much from a small street-side shop, but even so, the blackened trays and greasy tableware made her frown slightly.
Cheng Wan noticed everything. She remembered how they used to eat out together at elegant restaurants. Even the Chinese ones had a refined and traditional atmosphere. Compared to those, eating here clearly wasn’t something Bai Juntang was used to.
Still, Bai Juntang finished two small bowls of noodles and had a few skewers. That was enough to fill her.
She hadn’t been very hungry to begin with, so after eating, she leaned back in her chair and began snacking on some edamame.
Although the shop had no customers this late, it still had quite a few delivery orders. Several delivery drivers came and went while they sat there.
Cheng Wan focused on her skewers and noodles. Meanwhile, Bai Juntang finished a whole plate of edamame and peanuts. Surprisingly, the flavor was quite good.
After eating, Cheng Wan felt warm and comfortable again. As they left the shop together, she took off the coat and handed it back to Bai Juntang.
Bai Juntang glanced at it and said, “Keep it on. We still have a ten-minute walk ahead.”
“I’m fine now. I’m not cold anymore,” Cheng Wan insisted as she handed it over. Seeing she wouldn’t give in, Bai Juntang reluctantly took the coat and put it back on.
The faint scent of white peach still lingered on the fabric. Bai Juntang liked it. It made her feel warm inside, and her mood improved instantly.
By the time they reached the apartment, it was already past one in the morning. As Cheng Wan entered the passcode to unlock the door, Bai Juntang began to speak.
“About tonight…”
“Thank you,” Cheng Wan interrupted softly, turning to look at her. After hesitating for a few seconds, she added, “It’s already late, so I won’t ask you to stay.”
“…Huh?” Bai Juntang was taken aback.
She had thought she might have a chance to stay the night, even if it meant crashing on the couch. But now that she had walked her all the way home, why was Cheng Wan turning her away at the door?
“I mean…” Bai Juntang scrambled for an excuse. “It’s already past one. How am I supposed to get home now?”
Cheng Wan hesitated and asked, “Didn’t you drive?”
Bai Juntang lied without blinking. “Li Chen brought me. I didn’t drive.”
Cheng Wan paused. “Then maybe take a taxi?”
“A cab would cost a lot at this hour,” Bai Juntang said, crossing her arms and faking discomfort. “And it would wake up my mom and Sui Sui. I helped you so much tonight. Even as a friend, don’t you think I deserve to stay over?”
Cheng Wan stayed quiet for a while, struggling with the decision. What Bai Juntang said wasn’t unreasonable. After thinking it through, she finally frowned and opened the door.
“Fine… but you have to leave first thing in the morning.”
“Alright.” Bai Juntang’s face lit up with a smile. “I’ll go back first thing tomorrow.”
