How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 105
As soon as Bai Juntang stepped into the apartment, she felt slightly suffocated. The space was so small it made breathing a little difficult.
It wasn’t that she had never lived in an apartment before. In fact, Bai Juntang owned quite a few herself, but none were this tiny.
The living room was barely the size of a palm. It wasn’t even as wide as the hallway in her house. From the entrance, she could see the entire apartment at once. It was uncomfortably small.
“You really live in a place like this?” Bai Juntang pulled out a chair and sat down. She looked up at Cheng Wan and said, “It’s not even as big as our bedroom.”
Cheng Wan said nothing. She quietly opened a packet of tea and began making tea for Bai Juntang.
Back in the Bai family home, the bedroom they shared was spacious. It had a large bathroom of over twenty square meters, a small open study, a walk-in closet, and the master bedroom itself. Altogether, it might truly have been bigger than this entire apartment.
As the tea leaves steeped in the glass teapot, they gently opened in the hot water. The light tea slowly spread, filling the pot little by little.
Cheng Wan placed the teapot on a small tray, added two clean glass cups, and brought them over to Bai Juntang.
The dining table was small, designed for a single person. So when the two of them sat down, the distance between them immediately became very close.
Cheng Wan accidentally bumped her knee against Bai Juntang’s. Embarrassed by the lack of space, she blushed, pulled her chair back slightly, and softly said, “Sorry.”
Bai Juntang gave her a strange look, crossed her arms, and studied Cheng Wan carefully before her eyes settled on her forehead.
Although Cheng Wan had tried hard to hide the injury with her hair, they were sitting so close and Bai Juntang wasn’t blind. She noticed it right away.
“What happened?” Bai Juntang frowned. “You’ve only been gone for a few days. How did you hurt your head?”
Cheng Wan touched the wound and lowered her head. “I bumped it by accident.”
Bai Juntang sighed. “How can you be so careless? Did you see a doctor?”
“It’s just a small cut. No need to see a doctor. It’ll heal in a couple of days.”
“Hitting your head is not a small thing. You’ve always been a bit careless, and now that you’re living alone, you’re still the same.”
Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan with concern. She reached out, wanting to move her hair aside for a closer look, but Cheng Wan instinctively pulled away.
Her hand hung awkwardly in the air. Bai Juntang’s expression darkened. She didn’t say anything and simply lowered her hand. Then she picked up the teapot and poured herself a cup of tea.
Steam rose from the cup, but Bai Juntang didn’t drink. She kept her eyes on Cheng Wan.
These past few days, she had barely slept. Ever since that encounter at the supermarket, she hadn’t been able to rest. The person she had shared a bed with for so long had left without warning. Aside from anger, Bai Juntang also felt deeply hurt.
In other people’s eyes, she was the perfect woman. She had power, influence, beauty, and intelligence. She seemed flawless. But when it came to Cheng Wan, she had stumbled again and again.
It was Cheng Wan’s cautious manner, her curved eyes when she smiled, the soft white peach scent of her pheromones, and the way her eyes turned red when they were close. All of it haunted Bai Juntang night after night.
Now, with Cheng Wan sitting right in front of her, how could she focus on drinking tea?
“You…” Bai Juntang looked at Cheng Wan and softened her tone. “It’s been almost a month since you left, hasn’t it?”
Cheng Wan nodded. “Yes.”
“I know I was wrong too,” Bai Juntang said as she looked at her. “I have a bad temper. I got really angry at you in the beginning. But I never wanted you to leave.”
She reached out and held Cheng Wan’s hand, which had been resting on the table. Cheng Wan froze and looked up in shock.
Before coming here, Bai Juntang had thought a lot about what to say. For the past two weeks, she had wanted to apologize. At first, she was too proud. But the moment she saw Cheng Wan, all that pride disappeared.
What use is pride when it doesn’t bring you happiness?
Although Bai Juntang had never apologized to anyone before, it wasn’t because she couldn’t. She was fully capable of admitting when she was wrong. And this time, she truly had been.
“I’m really sorry for the hurtful things I said in the past.” Bai Juntang held Cheng Wan’s hand tightly. “I love Suisui very much. And I love you too. You’re both very important to me.”
She continued, “When you left without saying anything after Suisui’s full-month celebration, I was really angry. Then I saw the divorce papers you left behind. I felt like you were being so heartless. I loved you so much, but all you remembered were the harsh words I once said.”
She tilted her head slightly and looked at Cheng Wan with her deep, dark eyes. “There’s that saying, right? ‘A little kindness is appreciated, but too much turns into resentment.’ Is that how you are?”
Cheng Wan’s face turned red. “I’m not that kind of person…”
“But you left Suisui and me without even saying goodbye. You just threw us aside. I looked for you for a whole day and night. When you finally answered my call, the first thing you asked was whether I had signed the divorce papers. How could I not be angry?”
Cheng Wan looked at her. She had to admit, Bai Juntang’s words made sense.
She had left without a word. It was understandable that Bai Juntang was so upset.
“I’m sorry.” Cheng Wan turned her head and lowered her eyes. “But we’re already divorced. And… we really weren’t right for each other. Your mother never liked me either. I thought leaving was the best decision.”
Bai Juntang was just about to say she hadn’t signed the divorce papers when a loud crashing sound startled both of them.
Before they could react, they heard a man shouting from the apartment next door, followed by the sharp sound of a slap.
“You useless woman! It’s this late and you still haven’t made dinner? I work so hard outside to support this family, and all you do is sit at home doing nothing!”
Another slap followed.
“I… I thought you ate with your coworkers today. You said you were going out, so I didn’t cook…”
“What could I possibly eat with those bastards? They only care about money. I lost several clients today and had to put on a fake smile all day. Now I come home and can’t even get a hot meal. And you dare talk back!”
More slapping sounds followed, echoing through the walls.
Cheng Wan’s face turned pale from fear.
Even Bai Juntang, who had never experienced anything like this, looked shocked. She turned to Cheng Wan and asked, “Are your walls really this thin? Who lives next door?”
Cheng Wan didn’t answer. Her face was completely white. She just pulled her hand back and said quietly, “It’s getting late. You should go. I need to rest.”
Seeing how pale and shaken Cheng Wan looked, Bai Juntang frowned. “How can I leave you like this?”
Cheng Wan was starting to panic. She was afraid the man next door might suddenly lose control again. She had planned to quietly avoid trouble, but now that Bai Juntang was here, she feared he might find out something.
In her urgency to get Bai Juntang to leave, Cheng Wan instinctively grabbed her hand and began leading her toward the door.
Bai Juntang didn’t want to leave, but seeing Cheng Wan holding her hand so tightly made her feel strangely happy. So she followed her to the entrance.
Just as Cheng Wan was about to open the door, Bai Juntang blocked it with her body. Leaning against the door, she looked at Cheng Wan and said, “Don’t you think you’re being too heartless? I came all this way just to have a cup of tea and chat, and you’re sending me away before I’ve even had a sip?”
Cheng Wan looked flustered. “Th-then… I’ll make tea for you another time?”
Bai Juntang gave a faint smile. She was already thinking that tomorrow might be a good day. If she came by in the morning, they could spend the whole day together. And if things went well, maybe even the night.
“I’m free tomorrow. How about we have tea then?” Bai Juntang asked.
Cheng Wan, anxious to get her to leave, agreed just to settle the matter. “Alright. Come back tomorrow. But for now, please go.”
Seeing how eager Cheng Wan was to get rid of her made Bai Juntang feel uncomfortable. She started dragging her feet and didn’t want to go, which made Cheng Wan even more anxious. Her face turned pale.
Just as they were still struggling by the door, they suddenly heard a door opening next door, followed by loud banging against the wall behind them.
“Come out, whoever’s inside!”
Cheng Wan immediately froze. She recognized the voice. It was the man next door.
Bai Juntang’s brow furrowed deeply. She was about to say something when Cheng Wan quickly covered her mouth.
The scent of white peach filled the air between them. Bai Juntang, seeing how close Cheng Wan was, placed her hand on her waist and gently pulled her closer.
What could have been an intimate moment was quickly ruined by the yelling man outside the door.
“I know you’re home. I just heard voices in there.” The man shouted through the door, “Who the hell do you think you are, sneaking around and talking to my wife behind my back? Didn’t I warn you last time? If you interfere again, I’ll beat you too!”
Bai Juntang’s face turned cold. Now she finally understood how Cheng Wan got hurt.
She pulled Cheng Wan’s hand away from her mouth. Her dark eyes filled with anger. She asked quietly, “He hit you?”
Cheng Wan knew what she meant and quickly shook her head. “He just pushed me a little. I accidentally hit myself.”
But how was that any different?
Bai Juntang’s expression became even darker. The man outside continued to curse in the hallway. His words were getting worse and worse. Cheng Wan had grown up hearing that kind of verbal abuse, but seeing Bai Juntang’s face turning colder by the second, she remembered how bad her temper could be. She tried to calm her down.
“Don’t get angry. I’m moving to a new place in a few days anyway.”
“Why should you move?” Bai Juntang asked with a cold voice. “What did you do wrong that you need to leave?”
Bai Juntang knew Cheng Wan had put a lot of effort into finding this apartment. She had just finished settling in. And now, just because of an awful neighbor, she was going to move out?
Why should she?
Cheng Wan hadn’t done anything wrong. Why did she have to run away just because someone else was being aggressive?
Suddenly, there was a loud thud as the man outside kicked the door. Cheng Wan jumped, but then remembered this was a solid security door. As long as she didn’t open it, he couldn’t get in.
Cheng Wan could tolerate it, but Bai Juntang couldn’t.
That man was acting so arrogantly even with her still inside. If she left now, wouldn’t he torment Cheng Wan the whole night?
Bai Juntang’s face was grim. She placed one hand firmly on the door handle and turned to Cheng Wan.
“Call the police. I’ll deal with him.”
Before Cheng Wan could react, Bai Juntang pulled the door open and stepped outside.
