How Could a Scumbag Alpha Possibly Love His Wife? - Chapter 102
All the emotions Bai Juntang had just built up were completely extinguished by Cheng Wan’s question.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Bai Juntang stared at her and asked quietly, “Are you really looking forward to me signing the papers that much?”
Cheng Wan couldn’t bring herself to look at her. She knew exactly how scary Bai Juntang could be when she was angry. Even in the past, she used to be nervous around her. Back then, she was always cautious when speaking. Now that she had clearly angered her, the pressure was even worse.
“I’m not trying to push you…” Cheng Wan looked down, her eyes fixed on the pattern of the floor tiles. “I just thought that it’s been over two weeks. You should have made up your mind by now.”
Bai Juntang snapped, “You’ve been gone all this time, but it looks like you haven’t been lacking company. Who was that woman just now? Is she the kind of person you want now?”
Cheng Wan looked up in surprise. “Don’t be ridiculous. That was the first time I met Miss Wu today.”
“The first time and you were already making eyes at each other? I thought your eyes were about to fly out of your head,” Bai Juntang took a step forward and pressed, “If you spend more time with her, will she fall head over heels for you?”
Bai Juntang hadn’t meant to say any of that. What she had really wanted was a proper conversation with Cheng Wan. Wasn’t this what Cheng Wan wanted all along? A confession? All she had to do was say she liked her. It wasn’t like it would cost her anything.
But then she thought about how Cheng Wan and Wu Qingwen had looked at apartments together, gone shopping together, and might even go back to their new place and cuddle. The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She completely forgot there had been three people there, not just the two of them.
Bai Juntang reached out and grabbed Cheng Wan’s wrist, pulling her closer. She lowered her head and said, “If that’s the type you like, then you really have no taste. I’m richer, more powerful, and better looking than her. Why would you not want me?”
Cheng Wan’s face turned red. She stepped back and said, “Can you stop being so unreasonable? I didn’t do anything. And it really was the first time I met Miss Wu. I don’t have feelings for her.”
Hearing that actually made Bai Juntang feel a little better. But she still demanded, “Then who do you have feelings for?”
Cheng Wan’s face grew even redder. Who else could she possibly have feelings for?
“Let go of me…” Cheng Wan tried to pull her wrist free. She noticed more people starting to gather and, for once, she raised her voice in frustration. “If you’ve signed the divorce papers, then just let me know. Unlike alphas, I have a lot to take care of.”
“What exactly do you need to take care of?”
Cheng Wan pressed her lips together, then stared at her and said, “I’m going to schedule a procedure to remove the mark.”
Bai Juntang felt like her mind exploded on the spot.
Sure, the marking had happened in a moment of confusion. But once a mark was made, it meant something. They were bound. Since then, Bai Juntang had never felt anything for another Omega. The scent of any other person made her instincts kick in, telling her she already had someone. Why would she want anyone else?
Marks had different effects depending on the person. For Omegas, it created more physical limits. They couldn’t stand being touched by other alphas. For alphas, it was mostly psychological. Any thoughts of intimacy naturally had to involve their marked Omega.
So when she heard that Cheng Wan wanted to remove the mark, Bai Juntang couldn’t believe it. Within minutes, Cheng Wan had pushed her to the brink of rage.
“You… you… you…” Bai Juntang stammered, unable to finish a sentence. Her hands clenched as she forced out the words, “Of course I signed the divorce papers. I signed them right after I called you. Go ahead and make the appointment. Isn’t that exactly what you’ve been hoping for?”
As soon as she said it, she saw the color drain from Cheng Wan’s face. Her heart dropped instantly.
It wasn’t exactly a lie. She had picked up the pen right after the call. But when the tip touched the paper, her hand refused to move. That light little pen felt like it weighed a ton. In the end, not only had she failed to sign it, but she had snapped the pen in frustration.
Now that she had said what she said, there was no taking it back. She could only watch as Cheng Wan stood there, pale and trembling.
Cheng Wan’s voice was soft but full of pain. “If it’s signed… then that’s it. We’re really over now, aren’t we?”
Bai Juntang bit her lip. Just as she was about to respond, there was a commotion behind them. She turned around and saw Chang Le and Wu Qingwen hurrying over, each pushing a cart.
Chang Le had thought some shameless alpha was bothering Cheng Wan. But when she got closer and saw it was Bai Juntang, she suddenly felt awkward.
“Miss Bai…” It was the first time Chang Le didn’t know how to greet someone. She glanced back and forth between them, then pointed to the way Bai Juntang was still gripping Cheng Wan’s wrist. “What’s going on here? From a distance, it looked like there was a fight.”
She hesitated, then asked carefully, “You’re not seriously trying to hit Cheng Wan, are you?”
Bai Juntang’s face turned even darker. Was that really what people thought of her?
Hit Cheng Wan?
She should have passed out from rage long ago if she really wanted to hurt someone.
With Chang Le’s questioning, Cheng Wan finally realized how bad things looked. She took advantage of Bai Juntang’s momentary distraction and pulled her hand free. Then she moved behind Chang Le and looked directly at Bai Juntang.
“Miss Bai, please don’t contact me anymore. Now that the papers are signed… there’s no reason for us to see each other again.”
She took Chang Le’s hand and walked away. Wu Qingwen glanced back at Bai Juntang for a moment before following them, leaving her alone in the middle of the supermarket.
The whole encounter had completely ruined Cheng Wan’s mood. She didn’t want to shop anymore. She was worried she might run into Bai Juntang again and couldn’t concentrate on anything else. Fortunately, while she was gone, Chang Le had already picked up all the ingredients for the hot pot. Wu Qingwen had also finished most of the shopping. Seeing that Cheng Wan looked exhausted, they all agreed to head home.
The apartment was small. The kitchen was even smaller. If all three of them tried to squeeze in, they wouldn’t even be able to turn around. So, Wu Qingwen told Chang Le to stay with Cheng Wan, while she took care of prepping the food.
Chang Le didn’t argue. She was genuinely worried about Cheng Wan.
“Wanwan,” she said, curling up beside her on the couch with a cartoon pillow in her arms. The television played a mindless variety show, bringing just a little bit of noise and warmth into the tiny apartment.
Cheng Wan came back to her senses and looked at Chang Le, giving her a gentle smile. “What’s wrong?”
Chang Le looked at her with wide eyes. “So… what did Miss Bai want with you today? Did you two get into a fight?”
Cheng Wan paused before nodding slightly. “You could say that. I told her I want a divorce, and she got very angry.”
Hugging a cushion to her chest, Chang Le hesitated for a moment before speaking. “Are you sure Miss Bai doesn’t have feelings for you? Because the way she acted today… it honestly looked like she’s madly in love with you. She wouldn’t even let go of your hand. Seriously, it felt like one of those drama scenes.”
Cheng Wan tapped her gently on the head. “Stop watching so many of those shows. Things between Bai Juntang and me are really… not the same.”
“What’s different?” Chang Le asked, unwilling to let it go. “I always thought she really cared about you. I mean, she’s a big boss, and yet she always had a car pick you up, took you out to have fun, and even treated me, a low-level employee, nicely just because I’m your friend. How could she not like you?”
She continued, “If it’s just a misunderstanding, you should try clearing things up. If you go through with this divorce, it’s going to be really hard to find someone else with her kind of status.”
Cheng Wan thought back to that moment in the supermarket, when Bai Juntang had angrily asked her, “I’m rich, I’m powerful, I’m better-looking. Why am I not good enough for you?” Her expression softened, and she lowered her gaze to her own fingers.
Laughter from the variety show on TV echoed around them. To her ears, it sounded sharp and out of place.
“Being wealthy is nice,” Cheng Wan said quietly, “but what I really want is a home. You have parents, but I don’t. I’ve lived for over twenty years just wishing for someone who truly loves me, someone who wants to spend their life with me. I don’t care about her status or background.”
She looked down and added, “But Bai Juntang doesn’t really love me. She only wanted me to give birth to the child. From the very beginning, her plan was to keep the baby and get rid of me.”
Chang Le was speechless. She had never imagined Bai Juntang could be like that. Just how heartless would someone have to be to come up with something as cruel as “keep the child, discard the mother”?
Cheng Wan clutched the edge of her sweater and sighed. “Honestly, maybe it’s a good thing we separated. We were never right for each other. She shines in every room she enters, and I… I get nervous just talking to strangers. We’re not the same. Being apart might be the best thing for us.”
She looked up and noticed Chang Le’s eyes had turned red. Instead of comforting herself, Cheng Wan gently tried to cheer her up. “Bai Juntang said she’s already signed the divorce papers. In a couple of days, I’ll schedule the surgery to remove the mark. Don’t feel sorry for me. At least she gave me a decent amount of money.”
Chang Le wiped her eyes and said with difficulty, “But money isn’t enough. You just had a baby not long ago. You can’t be alone right now. Someone needs to take care of you.”
“I don’t need anyone to take care of me,” Cheng Wan replied with a soft smile. “Look, I have a home now, don’t I? Everything’s going to be okay.”
Chang Le lowered her head and sighed. Her heart ached, and she didn’t know what else to say.
They had hot pot for dinner. Wu Qingwen turned out to be quite practical and organized. She set up the induction cooker and placed the ingredients neatly around the pot like a blooming flower. The smell of hot soup filled the small apartment, making it feel cozy and alive.
After dinner, both Chang Le and Wu Qingwen got ready to leave. Before heading out, Wu Qingwen sent Cheng Wan a list of household essentials she might still need, along with contact details for the landlord and property manager. She told her not to hesitate to ask for help and reminded her not to be polite.
Once the guests had left, Cheng Wan stood in the living room, looking at the unwashed dishes on the table. Her mood wasn’t bad.
She was officially divorced from Bai Juntang now. In a few days, she would contact the hospital to begin the process of removing the mark. She had just moved into a great apartment. Even though her past was gone, it felt like the future might finally be heading somewhere better.
Cheng Wan washed all the dishes and cleaned the small living room. Even though the apartment was only a little over forty square meters, it was still tiring to tidy it up. After just half an hour, she felt like her entire body, down to her bones, was aching.
Eventually, the pain became too much, and she decided to stop. She would get some rest and finish the rest tomorrow.
Around eleven at night, while Cheng Wan was still asleep, she was suddenly awakened by a woman’s cries. What finally pulled her from her dreams was a loud crashing noise, like a cabinet being slammed onto the floor.
Startled, she sat up on her bed and turned on the light. It came from the apartment next door.
A man’s furious voice could be heard shouting, “You shameless Omega! I swear I’ll beat you to death tonight!”
