- Chapter 59.1 - Extracting Pheromones
After curling up to one side, Liu Yu released her grip on Lou Qingshuang’s hand. Lou Qingshuang lay on the bed, her strength utterly depleted. Feeling exhausted and faint, she stared at the light on the ceiling of the vehicle. The area behind her gland was throbbing with a matching pain; her pheromone gland felt parched and agonizing.
Lou Qingshuang slowly sat up on the hospital bed, her breathing somewhat rapid. She paused for thirty seconds to compose herself before getting up to open the door. Shang Qing was standing there alone, looking at her with concern. “Are you alright?”
Lou Qingshuang’s forehead was covered in sweat, drenching the strands of hair at her temples. “I’m fine. She is suffering even more than before. How much longer until we reach the hospital?”
“We’ll be there in two minutes. The car is driving directly into the hospital grounds; all the doctors are on standby.” Shang Qing stepped into the room. Seeing her friend curled into a ball, she felt a pang of distress in her heart.
“I stimulated her just now, but her pheromones still won’t release, so she’s in even more pain,” Lou Qingshuang said, wiping the sweat from her forehead.
“Do you need me to check on you?” Shang Qing noticed that Lou Qingshuang’s complexion looked poor, and flashes of pain crossed her face from time to time.
“She gave me a temporary mark just now, but no pheromones were injected. I’m feeling a bit uncomfortable, but I’ll be fine after a short rest.” Lou Qingshuang wiped away the rest of the sweat on her brow.
Shang Qing looked at Lou Qingshuang with emotion. “You’ve worked hard. Thank you.”
“Director, we’ve arrived at the hospital,” the two doctors standing at the door informed Shang Qing.
The group quietly moved Liu Yu into the hospital through the back entrance.
Lou Qingshuang stood in Liu Yu’s private ward, watching the doctors assess her physical condition.
By the time the aspiration needle pierced Liu Yu’s pheromone gland, the dark clouds in the sky had slowly dispersed, revealing a ghostly blue twilight. The sun had already begun to rise above the horizon.
Lou Qingshuang turned on her phone; it was 5:20 AM. She clicked the screen off. They needed to wake Liu Yu before seven o’clock so she could appear normally at the Liu Group and dispel the rumors.
Lou Qingshuang watched Liu Yu, who was lying on her side on the treatment table with a breathing tube inserted in her mouth. Her heart ached sharply, and her fingers unconsciously pinched her own flesh.
Wearing a mask, Shang Qing carefully operated the aspiration needle to pierce Liu Yu’s gland, which had hardened into a lump. As soon as the needle entered, Liu Yu’s body—though she was unconscious—shuddered from the pain. The other doctors quickly held her down.
Standing in the extremely cold room, Shang Qing’s back was drenched in sweat. It took considerable effort to pierce the surface of the gland. As she pushed forward, there was a constant sense of obstruction; the interior of the gland had also begun to harden. This was not a good sign.
Lou Qingshuang watched the blood seeping from the back of Liu Yu’s neck. It was a murky, dark red, not the color of healthy, fresh blood.
Lou Qingshuang’s heart was racing. She watched Shang Qing’s movements with trepidation. Suddenly, Shang Qing spoke: “Prepare to release pheromones.”
Lou Qingshuang tore off her pheromone blocker patch. The two tooth marks on her gland had not yet disappeared.
At that moment, a surge of blood carrying a powerful and aggressive pheromone erupted. It was no longer an entirely cold scent; it carried a coercive strength that was nearly suffocating. Fortunately, the doctors were wearing protective suits to filter the impact of Liu Yu’s pheromones.
What Lou Qingshuang smelled was the scent of roses amidst blood and thorns—roses blooming in gore, filled with pain and lamentation. It smelled like a rose on the verge of withering; the cold fragrance carried a metallic, decaying note of rust. The pheromones that had been trapped due to the glandular blockage now erupted like a geyser, carrying a faint hint of bitterness.
The already torn gland expanded and ruptured once more. The surface of the gland cracked like parched, dry earth.
Lou Qingshuang felt the agony of Liu Yu’s pheromones. The pain was so overwhelming it made it difficult for her to breathe. Tears welled in her eyes as she tried her best to soothe Liu Yu and awaken her will to survive.
The accumulated pheromones exploded like a fountain. The resulting pain was no less than the agony of the blockage itself. The explosive sensation caused Liu Yu to groan in pain even in her coma.
In her suffering, she slowly opened her eyes. Everything before her was a blur of blood-red, and she could see nothing clearly. As her lips moved, she realized something was in her mouth.
“She’s awake! She’s awake!” Lou Qingshuang was the first to notice Liu Yu had regained consciousness. Since she could not approach the treatment table, she could only inform the doctors.
A doctor crouched carefully in front of Liu Yu to check her pupils. “Chairman, we are currently performing an aspiration needle procedure. You need to try your best to remain conscious. There are speculations about your health outside the company. You need to appear before the public this morning before the stock market opens,” the doctor quickly explained the situation.
Liu Yu blinked to indicate she understood. A gentle wave of pheromones softly embraced her. Liu Yu’s eyes flickered as she tried to respond to Lou Qingshuang; her heart felt incredibly tender.
She could clearly feel Shang Qing working inside her gland. She felt like a piece of pork, left to be handled by others.
“Vasodilation confirmed. Blood foam is appearing at the Chairman’s mouth, nose, and eyes. Pupils are normal.” The doctor picked up sterile gauze to wipe away the fresh blood flowing from her face.
Lou Qingshuang watched as blood foam bubbled from Liu Yu’s nose and mouth. She clenched her fists tightly, her body trembling involuntarily. At that moment, she wanted to hold Liu Yu and speak to her, but all she could do was maintain a steady output of pheromones to soothe Liu Yu’s own.
Shang Qing managed to alleviate more than half of the congested pheromones in Liu Yu’s gland. A large amount of dark red blood had drained out, staining the sterile surgical drapes.
Finally, the long aspiration needle was slowly withdrawn and removed, its tip stained with blood.
The medical staff simultaneously cleared the items from the treatment table and began to disinfect and bandage Liu Yu’s wound.
With her hands covered in blood, Shang Qing stood to one side looking at her friend. Seeing the faint smile on Liu Yu’s face, a glint of tears flashed in her eyes. She couldn’t help but laugh as well, though her smile—much like Lou Qingshuang’s—was filled with bitterness.
Lou Qingshuang’s fingernails dug deep into her skin as she restrained herself from stepping forward to interrupt the doctors while they bandaged the wound. Her heart was trembling as if something had cracked. Was this heartbreak? She dared not imagine what she would do if anything happened to Liu Yu.
In her original plan, she thought she could remain unattached and simply enjoy this two-year “romance.” She never expected that Liu Yu would face a life-and-death crisis so soon after they began.
Once the doctors finished cleaning up, Liu Yu was moved to a soft hospital bed. Lou Qingshuang watched the medical staff leave. Shang Qing took off her protective gear and washed the blood from her hands.
“In this condition, she can’t go on like this. The pheromones haven’t been completely cleared; some residue remains. Subsequent pheromones will gradually accumulate again,” Shang Qing said, explaining Liu Yu’s physical state.
Lou Qingshuang looked up at Shang Qing. “Doctor Shang, do you have something to tell me? You’ve looked like you were hesitating to speak seven or eight times already.”
Seeing Lou Qingshuang’s reddened eyes, Shang Qing felt somewhat nervous. She licked her dry lips. “There is indeed a way to treat her.”
Lou Qingshuang saw how difficult it was for Shang Qing to speak, and she knew this medical plan must be dangerous, perhaps even involving herself. Still, Lou Qingshuang asked, “What is the plan?”
“Extracting your pheromones and compressing them into a high-concentration soothing agent. However, this process is very dangerous,” Shang Qing said with great difficulty, lowering her head.
“What specifically is the danger?” Lou Qingshuang asked, looking at Liu Yu lying on the bed.
“At best, it causes pheromone withering. At worst, the gland might atrophy, making recovery impossible,” Shang Qing said, not daring to meet Lou Qingshuang’s eyes. This plan offered no benefit to Lou Qingshuang; it was entirely harmful.
“Does Liu Yu know?” Lou Qingshuang asked suddenly.
“She knows, which is why she rejected it immediately and forbade me from telling you about this option.” Shang Qing looked down at her toes, feeling dejected. She was playing the “villain” again. From a medical standpoint, this method shouldn’t have been proposed, yet she had proposed it anyway.
Lou Qingshuang gazed at the curled figure on the bed and remembered their first meeting. Liu Yu had caught her as she stumbled and whispered in her ear, “Your pheromones are leaking.”
Thinking of this, Lou Qingshuang’s lips curled upward. She still wanted to hear Liu Yu say things like that.
“I agree. How soon can we start?” Lou Qingshuang turned her head, looking at Shang Qing with a calm gaze.
“The risk is very high,” Shang Qing said, looking at her in shock. “Won’t you think about it a bit more?”
“I don’t think her body can wait for me to think slowly,” Lou Qingshuang replied, glancing at Liu Yu.
“But you haven’t completely fallen in love with her, have you?” Shang Qing thought in shock. Is she really willing to make such a sacrifice?
“My purpose in signing the agreement with her was to save her life. It has nothing to do with whether I love her or not. I am simply fulfilling my promise.” Lou Qingshuang walked over to Liu Yu, reaching out to brush the long hair away from her forehead.
Shang Qing remained silent, watching Lou Qingshuang as she tenderly leaned over to wipe Liu Yu’s sweat. The shock in her heart grew.
Just a promise?
Initially, this promise was merely a pretext used to get close to Lou Qingshuang, and Lou Qingshuang knew it. But her purpose could have changed from the start—to help Liu Yu get treatment. If she were cured, would Lou Qingshuang still stay by Liu Yu’s side?
The qualities in Lou Qingshuang that attracted Liu Yu had never disappeared. It wasn’t just because she was beautiful, but because of that unique intellectual quality she possessed—so bright and moving.
