- Episode 30 - Is Your Love Still There?
Peach Blossom took two steps, then glanced back, never expecting Xiao Yuan would actually follow her to the training ground. “Why are you following me?”
Instead of directly answering Peach Blossom’s question, Xiao Yuan walked over to the willow tree and carefully examined the marks on it, as if she had noticed them the moment she entered.
Peach Blossom was baffled by her actions. “What are you looking at?”
Xiao Yuan pointed to the marks on the willow tree and asked, “Did the Guardian do this?”
Peach Blossom’s heart skipped a beat. Could it be that this willow tree held some special meaning to her? Was she using this as an excuse to attempt another assassination?!
After a moment’s thought, Peach Blossom found the perfect scapegoat. “This was done by my senior sister.”
Xiao Yuan: “…”
Peach Blossom blinked her beautiful eyes, deliberately putting on an innocent and naive expression.
After a long silence, Xiao Yuan finally couldn’t help but avert her gaze and said coldly, “Guardian, please begin your training.”
Peach Blossom coughed lightly in embarrassment, then walked to the center of the training ground, drew her longsword, and focused intently on her practice.
Xiao Yuan stood under the eaves not far away, watching Peach Blossom’s movements as she trained.
Swinging her sword under the scorching sun, Peach Blossom was soon drenched in sweat and couldn’t help but sit down to rest.
“Have a drink of cool water.”
A bamboo tube filled with cool water appeared before Peach Blossom. She followed the hand upward with her gaze and saw Xiao Yuan’s expression as cold as ever.
Peach Blossom took the bamboo tube but hesitated, unsure whether it might be poisoned…
Xiao Yuan seemed to see right through her thoughts and said coldly, “If you’re afraid I’ve poisoned it, then don’t drink.”
Peach Blossom: “…”
She peered inside the tube and saw the water was clear and seemingly normal. After an internal struggle, she finally raised her head and drank it all in one go.
Peach Blossom wiped the water from her lips with her sleeve. Downing a large gulp of cool water was truly refreshing for both body and mind.
Seeing this, Xiao Yuan snorted disdainfully. “Wasn’t the Guardian afraid this servant had poisoned the water?”
Peach Blossom deliberately mimicked her tone and snorted back, proudly saying, “The alchemy room is so close by. If I were poisoned, my senior sister would come to my rescue immediately.”
Xiao Yuan’s expression remained unchanged, but inwardly she was surprised that Peach Blossom knew the way to the alchemy room. After all, the alchemy room was a highly classified and restricted area within the sect, not just anyone could enter.
Xiao Yuan didn’t engage further with Peach Blossom. After resting for a while, Peach Blossom resumed her training.
She practiced for a while longer until Xiao Yuan, still standing in the shade under the eaves, suddenly spoke up. “Lower your center of gravity, raise your sword a bit higher, increase your speed, and bring out more intensity—be fiercer.”
Peach Blossom was taken aback before realizing Xiao Yuan was offering guidance. After a brief consideration, she adjusted her movements accordingly and, sure enough, her motions became much smoother. But why was she giving her advice now, when she had tried to kill her before? Could this be the real reason Guan Fusha had assigned her to her side?
“Focus. Don’t let your mind wander.” Xiao Yuan noticed Peach Blossom’s distraction and reminded her.
Hearing this, Peach Blossom immediately snapped back to attention, setting aside all irrelevant thoughts and concentrating fully on her training.
She repeatedly practiced the initial forms of the Flying Dragon Sword Technique on the training ground until the sky began to darken. Only then did she sheathe her sword, gather her things, and prepare to return to Peach Garden.
As soon as the two of them left the training ground, they ran into A’Tian.
Taohua’s heart leaped with joy, her eyes instantly lighting up as she greeted A’Tian warmly, “A’Tian, what brings you here? Did Sister send you to invite me to Hibiscus Garden for dinner?”
“This humble servant pays respects to the Protector.” A’Tian smiled, though a faint trace of reluctance flickered in her expression. “Indeed, the Right Protector ordered me to come, but… she instructed me to summon Xiao Yuan to see her immediately.”
Taohua’s expression instantly fell. Since last night, Guan Fusha hadn’t come looking for her for an entire day. Could it be she was truly angry about the confession?
Xiao Yuan also looked somewhat surprised but quickly reverted to her usual aloof demeanor. “Understood. I’ll go right away.”
With that, she gathered her energy and leaped onto the roof, disappearing from Taohua’s sight in no time.
Watching Xiao Yuan’s retreating figure, Taohua felt nothing but envy. If her own lightness skill could reach that level, she could move freely around the sect and even sneak into Hibiscus Garden for a stroll.
At this thought, Taohua couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
A’Tian also sighed quietly to herself. She truly couldn’t bear to see the Right Protector suffering from lovesickness, but she was merely a lowly servant. There was nothing she could do to change the Protector’s decisions. Shaking her head, A’Tian pushed these thoughts aside and smiled at Taohua. “Protector, let this servant take you back to Peach Garden.”
“Mm,” Taohua replied listlessly.
After escorting Taohua back to Peach Garden, A’Tian prepared to return to Hibiscus Garden, only to run into the last person she wanted to see as if fate had a twisted sense of humor. Almost instinctively, A’Tian immediately turned her back to Yan Hong, intending to slip away quietly.
She had barely taken a step when she heard Yan Hong’s lazy voice behind her. “Why do you run as soon as you see me, A’Tian? Not even a greeting?”
A’Tian stiffened, forced to halt her steps. She plastered on her usual smile and turned to greet Yan Hong. “This humble servant pays respects to the Hall Master.”
“Mmm~” Yan Hong smiled delightedly, drawing out the sound with pleasure.
“This servant will take her leave now.” Just as A’Tian tried to depart, Yan Hong reached out and wrapped an arm around her slender waist, pulling her forcefully until she was pressed tightly against Yan Hong’s chest.
“Hall Master…” A’Tian felt utterly defeated and helpless. Why did this woman always enjoy tormenting her?
Yan Hong traced a finger lightly over A’Tian’s cheek, smiling enchantingly. “Why do you always run from me, A’Tian? Don’t you want to have a heart-to-heart with me?”
Yan Hong deliberately emphasized the words “heart-to-heart,” causing A’Tian to blush instantly as she recalled the events of that night in the Punishment Hall and the red marks that had appeared on her neck the next day.
“A’Tian, you look so adorable when you blush.” Yan Hong gazed at her with infatuation, her finger slowly trailing down from A’Tian’s cheek to her snow-white neck and continuing further.
“Stop!” A’Tian turned her face away and immediately struggled in Yan Hong’s embrace.
“Tsk, tsk.” Yan Hong paused her finger, smirking roguishly as she whispered in A’Tian’s ear, “Has A’Tian been reminiscing about that intimate night we shared?”
A’Tian let out a muffled groan, straining with all her might to break free from Yan Hong’s embrace. Yan Hong initially allowed her to struggle but suddenly released her grip. Caught off guard, A’Tian fell heavily to the ground, crying out in pain.
“How pitiful…” Yan Hong crouched down, gently tucking A’Tian’s disheveled hair behind her ear. “You see, if you had just stayed quietly in my arms, you wouldn’t have fallen.”
Gritting her teeth, A’Tian ignored Yan Hong and slowly pushed herself up from the ground. “If the Hall Master has no further orders, this servant will take her leave.”
“Of course, I have orders. Why else would I be standing here waiting for you?” Yan Hong crossed her arms, blinking her beautiful eyes.
“Then may I ask what the Hall Master requires?” A’Tian struggled to suppress her rising anger. There was no helping it—she was just a servant after all!
“Tell me, why did the Guardian suddenly release Xiao Yuan from the Punishment Hall? Why was Xiao Yuan assigned to serve under Cui Taohua, and why was Xiao Zhu transferred away?” Though Yan Hong still wore her casual smile, her questions were sharp and pointed.
A’Tian was taken aback. She had assumed Yan Hong was merely toying with her again, never expecting such questions…
Lowering her gaze, A’Tian replied respectfully, “This servant does not know. I merely follow the Guardian’s orders.”
“Oh?” Yan Hong voiced her disbelief as she closed in on A’Tian. “Then aside from these, what other commands has your Guardian issued?”
“Currently, the Guardian has only given these orders. I know nothing of any others.” A’Tian still refused to meet Yan Hong’s eyes.
“Know nothing? Fine!” Yan Hong suddenly burst into laughter, then her expression shifted. She grabbed A’Tian’s arm and shoved her against the wall.
The large tree beside the pavilion perfectly concealed their figures, making them difficult to spot. Yan Hong’s face showed traces of anger as she demanded sharply, “Tell me, do you really like Guan Fusha that much? So much that you’d do anything for her? So much that you’d sacrifice everything? So much that you’d be her loyal dog, never betraying her?”
A’Tian’s face turned pale instantly. So, Yan Hong had known all along about her feelings for the Guardian. Had everything she’d done before been deliberately to humiliate her in front of the Guardian?!
In that moment, she felt as exposed as if she were standing naked, foolishly believing she was still clothed.
Furious and humiliated, A’Tian bit her lip hard until she tasted the metallic tang of blood, using the pain to maintain her composure. She was a servant. She couldn’t lose her temper, couldn’t speak disrespectfully to the Hall Master, or she’d be playing right into Yan Hong’s hands! Taking a deep breath, A’Tian deliberately lowered her voice to conceal her emotions. “Even for the Hall Master, it is improper to address the Guardian so familiarly by name.”
“You!” Yan Hong was nearly driven mad with rage. She laughed in bitter anger. “Fine! Fine… Since you’re so devoted to Guan Fusha, I’ll grant your wish and let you be with her!”
With that, she stared intently at A’Tian as if trying to see through her soul, then suddenly stepped back, turned, and strode away in a swirl of sleeves.
In those eyes, there seemed to be a hint of disappointment, a trace of heartache, and a touch of lingering reluctance. That gaze held far too many complex emotions, and for some reason, it instead appeared somewhat desolate.
A’Tian was stunned by that look, for it was all too familiar to her. Wasn’t it exactly the same expression she herself wore when she secretly watched Guan Fusha expressing love for the peach blossoms from a hidden corner?
Unfortunately, by the time A’Tian came to her senses, Yan Hong had already walked far away.
