- Episode 29 - Will You Come Tonight
Peach Blossom had no idea how she made it back to Peach Garden. The entire journey felt hazy, with only the memory of that feverish, lingering kiss replaying endlessly in her mind.
“Guardian, Guardian!” Little Bamboo called out several times, but Peach Blossom didn’t respond. She had no choice but to raise her voice, “Guardian!”
“…Huh?” Peach Blossom finally snapped out of her thoughts, looking at Little Bamboo with a dazed expression.
“Would the Guardian prefer to bathe first or have dinner?” Little Bamboo sighed inwardly—this was already the third time she had asked.
Since Peach Blossom had been returning from martial arts training lately with the smell of sweat, Little Bamboo had prepared warm water in advance for her to bathe at any time.
Peach Blossom leaned toward the window and looked outside. The setting sun cast its warm rays across the courtyard, stretching the shadows of the peach trees long and thin. It was already dinnertime, but the familiar figure did not appear in the courtyard as usual. A sense of loss crept into Peach Blossom’s heart. “Where’s Senior Sister? Isn’t she coming to eat with us tonight?”
“Well… this servant hasn’t heard that the Right Guardian will be coming tonight.”
“Then, did she send anyone to invite me to Hibiscus Garden for dinner?” Peach Blossom pressed on, unwilling to give up.
“No, no one has come with a message today,” Little Bamboo replied, though she too was curious about the matter. After all, the two guardians had been practically inseparable lately, with the Right Guardian almost living in Peach Garden.
“Oh… I see.” Peach Blossom lowered her head dejectedly, unable to hide her disappointment.
Was Senior Sister not coming today because she felt hurt after Peach Blossom rejected her confession? Or was she angry because Peach Blossom had pushed her away? Would she stay angry for long? Would she never visit Peach Garden again?
At this thought, Peach Blossom suddenly felt an emptiness in her heart, a dull ache.
Little Bamboo carefully observed Peach Blossom’s expression and cautiously suggested, “Should… this servant go to Hibiscus Garden and invite the Right Guardian over?”
“No!” Peach Blossom blurted out instinctively, then bit her lip in regret.
“…Yes, my apologies, Guardian. This servant overstepped.” Little Bamboo felt awkward and bowed slightly to apologize.
“It’s not that…” Peach Blossom wiped her face roughly, feeling agitated. “I’m sorry for dismissing your kindness. You may go now. I want to be alone for a while.”
“Then, this servant will take her leave.” Though she didn’t understand why, Little Bamboo could tell Peach Blossom was in a bad mood and decided not to disturb her further, allowing her to think things through alone.
Peach Blossom sat on the edge of the bed, curling up and wrapping her arms tightly around her legs, burying her face in them.
She didn’t know what was wrong with her. Part of her longed to see Guan Fusha, yet she was also afraid to face her after what had happened that afternoon. Should she accept her? But what if, after An Xianli appeared, Guan Fusha still fell in love with him as in the original storyline? No matter how she looked at it, she would still end up as cannon fodder!
However, Peach Blossom had no idea that outside the window, on the rooftop of the eaves, Guan Fusha was watching her with the very same turmoil in her heart.
How she longed to relive yesterday—sharing meals and laughter with her junior sister, sleeping beside her at night, breathing in the delicate fragrance that always seemed to linger around her. That mischievous black hair would always find its way to brush against her cheeks and neck, and she would listen to the coquettish tone as her junior sister called out, “Senior Sister…”
But before Peach Blossom could respond, all of this had become as illusory as the moon reflected in water!
At this thought, Guan Fusha couldn’t help but clench her fists.
She had to prove her sincerity to her junior sister through action! Her promise was real, her affection was real, and this feeling would never change for the rest of her life!
The night had deepened.
Peach Blossom still hadn’t seen Guan Fusha’s figure. She blew out the oil lamp and lay on the bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep. Her mind was filled with the events of the afternoon and Guan Fusha’s confession.
Utterly exasperated, Peach Blossom buried her head under the quilt, trying to escape these troubling thoughts, but she still spent a sleepless night.
As a result, Peach Blossom rose early the next morning, her dark circles so pronounced they seemed about to drop to the floor.
Xiao Zhu entered the room carrying a washbasin and was nearly startled by Peach Blossom’s appearance. “Guardian? What happened to you?”
Peach Blossom squinted her tired eyes, lazily yawned, and replied listlessly, “I didn’t sleep well last night.”
Xiao Zhu was clever and had an inkling of what might have happened. She didn’t pry further and simply attended to Peach Blossom as usual, helping her change clothes and wash her face.
After breakfast, just as Peach Blossom was about to head to the training grounds, A’Tian suddenly paid a visit, bringing someone along with her.
“You are…!” Both Peach Blossom and Xiao Zhu were taken aback when they saw the person.
Especially Peach Blossom, who instinctively hid behind Xiao Zhu. There was no helping it. The memory was just too terrifying. This person had once tried to kill her!
A’Tian smiled gently at Peach Blossom and motioned for the maid behind her to step forward. “Allow me to introduce you, Guardian. This is Xiao Yuan. Starting today, she will be serving you in the Peach Garden.”
“Your humble servant pays respects to the Guardian.” Xiao Yuan’s face remained cold, but she performed the proper salute to Peach Blossom.
“W-wait a minute!” Peach Blossom’s eyes widened in shock, her jaw nearly dropping. “A’Tian, are you mistaken? Xiao Yuan… serving me in the Peach Garden?”
“That’s correct.” A’Tian smiled warmly, assuring her there was no mistake. “This is an order from the Right Guardian.”
Peach Blossom was even more shocked upon hearing this. Xiao Yuan had previously attempted to murder her—why would Guan Fusha assign her to her side? Could it be… that after her confession was rejected, she now wanted to kill her?!
Xiao Zhu also looked incredulous. “Tian Sister, then what about me?”
“Since the Left Guardian now has Xiao Yuan to serve her, of course, you will return with me to the Hibiscus Courtyard,” A’Tian replied with a smile.
“What?! No way!” Upon hearing this, Peach Blossom immediately grabbed hold of Xiao Zhu.
This was no joke! Xiao Yuan had tried to kill her. If Xiao Zhu left and she had to share a room with Xiao Yuan, wouldn’t that be like seeking her own death?
Xiao Yuan remained expressionless, saying nothing and making no attempt to clear her name.
Xiao Zhu’s gaze shifted back and forth between Peach Blossom and Xiao Yuan. She was the one who knew best what had happened that day. To be honest, she wasn’t very comfortable with the idea of these two being alone together. She had a feeling something significant was bound to happen.
A’Tian was somewhat torn. On one hand, there was the Guardian’s order, but on the other, she could understand Taohua’s perspective. “Guardian, please don’t worry. Xiao Yuan already knows her mistake and has repented for a long time. She will definitely not repeat it. The Right Guardian must have her own considerations for making this decision.”
Taohua glanced at Xiao Yuan, but no matter how she looked, she couldn’t sense any remorse in her. “A’Tian, can I speak with Shijie personally?”
For Xiao Zhu’s sake and her own safety going forward, even if she was unwilling, she had to meet Guan Fusha.
“Well…” A’Tian’s expression grew even more troubled. “The Guardian… she’s busy with sect affairs and might not be able to see you.”
Taohua’s face instantly darkened. This sounded like an excuse. Could it be that Guan Fusha truly didn’t want to see her?
She took a deep breath to calm herself. “What about during lunch? Shijie must eat lunch, right? I’ll go find her then, so I won’t disturb her.”
“After handling sect matters, the Guardian retreats to the alchemy room at noon to refine medicine. She probably won’t come out for the next few days.” Watching Taohua’s expression grow increasingly grim, A’Tian steeled herself and delivered the prepared explanation.
After hearing this, Taohua became even more convinced that Guan Fusha was deliberately avoiding her.
Damn it, why did it feel like their positions had reversed? She was the one who had been confessed to, so why was she the one chasing after Guan Fusha?!
With things having reached this point, dragging it out further was pointless. A’Tian made a quick decision and beckoned to Xiao Zhu. “Xiao Zhu, come here quickly!”
Xiao Zhu stole a glance at Taohua, her face full of reluctance, but she eventually walked over to A’Tian’s side. There was no helping it. A’Tian was her direct superior.
“Xiao Zhu!” Taohua was shocked, then heartbroken. Even Xiao Zhu had betrayed her!
A’Tian finally relaxed, a genuinely relieved smile spreading across her face as she bowed slightly to Taohua, preparing to take her leave. “Then this servant will not disturb the Guardian any further and will take her leave.”
Xiao Zhu didn’t dare look Taohua in the eye. She also bowed to Taohua before following A’Tian out of Taohua’s bedroom.
“Xiao Zhu!” Taohua was about to chase after them when Xiao Yuan “coincidentally” blocked her path.
She glanced at the practice clothes Taohua was wearing and the longsword on the table. “Is the Guardian planning to practice martial arts?”
Taohua immediately grabbed the sword from the table, clutching it tightly to her chest like a talisman, her expression guarded. “What if I am?”
“Nothing much.” Xiao Yuan crossed her arms and asked coldly, “I heard the Guardian has been practicing the Flying Dragon Sword Technique lately. I’m curious—how is your progress?”
Taohua was surprised. She hadn’t expected Xiao Yuan to know she was practicing the Flying Dragon Sword Technique. Had Guan Fusha told her? But why would she share that?
“Just so-so, neither good nor bad.” Seeing Xiao Yuan’s arrogant demeanor, Taohua felt irritated, and her tone naturally reflected it.
But this was the truth. Although Guan Fusha would guide her in sword practice, she had never commented on her aptitude. Moreover, since Taohua practiced alone, without any comparison, she had no way of knowing whether her progress was good or bad.
After hearing this, Xiao Yuan pondered for a moment and asked, “When does the Dharma Protector plan to head to the training ground?”
Peach Blossom scrutinized him carefully, repeatedly confirming that Xiao Yuan seemed to have no intention of attacking her. Only then did she tiptoe cautiously out of the bedroom, all the while remaining vigilant against a possible sneak attack from behind.
One can never be too cautious when it comes to guarding against others!
