Her Alpha - Chapter 7
“Boss, this document needs your signature.” Cai Meilin, wearing a pair of stiletto heels, had abandoned her usual strict professional attire for a striking red dress. Her hair, which she normally kept tied up, now cascaded loosely down her back, making her appear far more vibrant and lively than usual.
Even though her expression remained as stern as ever.
Shen Zuofeng took the document and skimmed through it. As she signed, she couldn’t help but ask curiously, “Manager Cai, you’ve changed your usual style did something good happen?”
Cai Meilin had always been good-looking, but she usually kept herself neat, tidy, and serious. Now, with a bit of effort put into her appearance, she truly stood out.
Cai Meilin adjusted her glasses and replied calmly, “My girlfriend dressed me up. She wants me to accompany her tonight for our third anniversary.”
Shen Zuofeng’s pen paused for a moment before she quickly finished signing and closed the folder. Looking up at the composed Manager Cai, she fell silent for a few seconds before saying, “You’ve really kept this under wraps, haven’t you?”
Three years, they had been together for three years, and yet she hadn’t revealed a single hint of it.
“Yes, because her family didn’t approve of our relationship before,” Cai Meilin explained.
“Oh? Why?” Shen Zuofeng frowned.
Cai Meilin took the folder back, her expression wooden. “Because she’s an outstanding omega, and I’m just an ordinary beta.”
Shen Zuofeng: “…”
Having lived in this world for 25 years, Shen Zuofeng naturally understood what that meant.
In this society, it was widely believed that omegas should be with alphas. How could an ordinary beta compare to outstanding alphas? This led to relationships that deviated from this fixed expectation often being met with disapproval, and the pressures they faced were immense.
“Seeing you like this now, I assume they’ve agreed?” Shen Zuofeng asked. The fact that Cai Meilin was openly acknowledging her relationship and expressing it without restraint suggested that the obstacles had been overcome.
“Exactly.” A faint smile finally appeared on the face of the ever-serious Manager Cai.
Thinking of the delicate and adorable woman at home, her smile grew even brighter.
Shen Zuofeng nodded, feeling genuinely happy for her as she saw the joy on Cai Meilin’s face.
But she also felt a slight pang of envy.
Watching Cai Meilin leave with the folder, Shen Zuofeng took out her phone and opened the chat with Chi Qingwei. Their last exchange was from two nights ago, a simple “sweet dreams.”
While Manager Cai had weathered the storm and finally seen the light, her own progress seemed stuck.
Sigh.
Shen Zuofeng let out a soft sigh. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to contact Chi Qingwei, but she felt that Chi Qingwei had a rather reserved personality and probably wouldn’t appreciate someone too clingy. Besides, they weren’t exactly close. Would reaching out too often annoy her?
Shen Zuofeng, who was usually decisive and efficient, found herself hesitating and uncertain when it came to Chi Qingwei.
However, her moment of melancholy didn’t last long. Soon, she had to put her phone aside and dive back into work. The company was still in its growth phase, and there was so much to do.
Although the company had quickly gained public attention thanks to Sword Quest, compared to the well-established giants in the industry, they were still relatively inexperienced. Relying on just one game wasn’t enough to secure their footing.
Thinking about the company’s future development, Shen Zuofeng’s expression turned somewhat gloomy. More than one company had already expressed interest in acquiring Future Technology, and now even the industry giant, North Game Network, had extended an olive branch.
Shen Zuofeng looked at the documents in her hand. On the surface, Future Technology was most well-known for its gaming division, but the company was far more than just games.
In addition to the still-developing spatial compression technology, software development and applications were also steadily progressing.
Moreover, Shen Zuofeng had long held an idea: once the company was fully established and stable, she wanted to fund the formation of a professional research team. Their goal would be to explore better ways to help people with hormonal imbalances safely navigate their sensitive periods and heats without relying on inhibitors or the calming effects of pheromones.
Just addressing the issue of hormonal instability alone, if they could achieve results, the market potential would be immeasurable much like the indispensable inhibitors that everyone relied on today.
Yang Huai had been leisurely enjoying a cup of coffee in the breakroom when she spotted Cai Meilin passing by. She immediately pulled her in and asked eagerly, “So? Is she going with the development team to Chi Liang?”
The head of the development department was planning to take the team to the Chi Liang Group later to discuss the adaptation of the script. Wasn’t this a perfect opportunity for Shen Zuofeng to join them?
Cai Meilin frowned, her expression cold and detached as she brushed off the hand still gripping her arm. “Of course, President Shen won’t be going. She has a business trip to Jiangyang City this afternoon. Instead of gossiping here, you’d better think about whether there’s anything you need to discuss with her, she’ll be away for three days.”
Yang Huai’s face fell. “Damn! Why didn’t you say so earlier?”
Without another word, she abandoned her coffee and hurried back to her office to sort through the documents that required Shen Zuofeng’s signature.
Cai Meilin watched her frantic retreat calmly, then meticulously smoothed out the wrinkles on her sleeve where Yang Huai had grabbed her.
Meanwhile, Chi Qingwei set down the script in front of her and rubbed her temples in frustration.
She had spent the entire morning reviewing numerous scripts, but hardly any had caught her eye. Normally, script selection wouldn’t fall directly on her shoulders, she would only step in after her team had made their initial picks to decide which ones were worth investing in. However, since the company was just starting out, she wanted to personally oversee the process. Little did she know it would only lead to a headache.
The only script that showed some promise was written by a screenwriter who had been publicly blacklisted for drug use. Using it would likely provoke backlash from netizens, tarnish the company’s reputation, and might not even be well-received by authorities. Taking such a risk for a merely decent script simply wasn’t worth it.
“Oh, by the way, Xiao Xi, has my second uncle been up to anything?”
“Nothing major for now, but he’s been in close contact with the company’s shareholders recently,” Xiao Xi replied.
Chi Qingwei let out a soft chuckle, as if she had expected as much.
Although her father had only one daughter, destined to inherit everything in the future, there were always those who refused to accept it, coveting what was never meant to be theirs.
Chi Liang Group was founded by Chi Qingwei’s father. As it grew larger, he brought in some family members through connections, hoping they could learn more and live better lives.
However, over the years, Chi Yuandong only had one child her, and an omega at that. This led many to start harboring ulterior motives.
The most active among them was her second uncle, Chi Yuanxi, because he had an alpha son.
Now that Chi Qingwei had come to Chi Liang Media to develop new sectors, it was naturally his turn to start making moves within the group.
“Let him be,” Chi Qingwei said calmly.
She didn’t really care about his actions; she simply found them utterly disgusting. She couldn’t tell whether he was genuinely foolish or just pretending. After all, the Chi family held absolute control over the company. What use was there in rallying those minor shareholders?
As long as they didn’t make any major mistakes, what grounds did those shareholders have to stir up trouble?
“Sigh.”
Chi Qingwei propped her head up and sighed. Old Chi was still too soft-hearted when it came to family and relatives. Even when they were causing such a stir in the company, he couldn’t bring himself to deal with them harshly. Yet, warnings only worked temporarily before long, they would revert to their old ways.
Old Chi was sentimental, but she wasn’t.
For those who were more trouble than they were worth, it would be better for them to just hold their shares and collect dividends in the future. They shouldn’t have any further involvement in company affairs.
“By the way, have the people from Future Tech arrived?” Chi Qingwei asked.
Xiao Xi: “Not yet. Their team leader called a short while ago to say they’d be a bit late, they’re stuck on the elevated highway due to a car accident ahead.”
“Is Miss Shen coming with them?”
“No, the team leader said only their group members are coming.” Ever since Chi Qingwei agreed to have a meal with Miss Shen, Xiao Xi had known that the young CEO held her in special regard, so she made sure to ask about this in advance.
Chi Qingwei nodded and said nothing more.
After reviewing a few more scripts, she picked up her phone and noticed that Shen Zuofeng had sent two messages while she was busy working.
“Miss Chi, I’ll be on a business trip to Jiangyang City for three days this afternoon.”
“When I return, may I invite you to a meal?”
Chi Qingwei smiled upon reading the first message, and her mood lifted even more after the second.
“Sure, but I’ll choose the place then?”
“Okay, no problem.” Shen Zuofeng’s reply came quickly.
Letting Chi Qingwei decide would give her a better understanding of her preferences.
Not long after, Shen Zuofeng sent another message this time, a photo of her work lunch.
“Miss Chi, have you had lunch yet?”
Chi Qingwei frowned slightly as she looked at the photo, feeling a faint pang of hunger.
Shen Zuofeng had already started eating, but her own meal hadn’t arrived yet. Had they forgotten to order for her? Chi Qingwei immediately messaged Xiao Xi, asking, “Has lunch not arrived yet?”
Xiao Xi was momentarily taken aback upon receiving the message. Since when had Chi Qingwei been so eager about food?
“CEO Chi, lunch is always delivered at 11:50. It’s only 11:47 now, but it should be here soon.”
It’s unclear if the delivery person had OCD, but the company mandated that lunch must arrive before twelve o’clock. Every single time, the delivery would be precisely at eleven-fifty, without a minute’s deviation.
Chi Qingwei: “…”
“Bring the meal to me as soon as it arrives.”
“Okay,” Xiao Xi replied obediently.
Lately, Chi Qingwei had been acting a bit unusual.
Seeing the reply, Chi Qingwei nodded in satisfaction, then opened the chat with Shen Zuofeng and responded, “I’m about to eat too.”
