Chapter 5: Becoming the Psychological Health Commissioner
Jinbao-er lay in bed, thinking about Zhao Yuheng’s kindness.
This straight man seemed a bit different.
He was being a little too good to him.
He knew he absolutely must not mess with straight men.
Therefore, it was absolutely, positively impossible for him to fall for Zhao Yuheng.
Even if he really did fall for him, he’d have to keep it bottled up!
Anyway, right now it was just a state of having a favorable impression.
He’d just treat it as appreciating something beautiful.
Thinking this, Jinbao-er drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, the two of them went to the cafeteria for breakfast together.
Zhao Yuheng saw Jinbao-er gnawing on a single plain steamed bun, while his own table held two tiers of soup dumplings and two cups of soy milk.
“Aren’t you going to choke, eating it dry like that?” Zhao Yuheng asked.
“No way, it makes my own throat feel tight just watching you.”
After saying that, Zhao Yuheng directly handed over his cup of Joyoung soy milk.
He wanted to treat Jinbao-er to breakfast, but he sensed the other boy likely had strong self-esteem, so he had to take it step by step.
If Jinbao-er knew, he would have been screaming in his heart:
Don’t be like that, Bro! I beg you to just throw money at me!
That’s right Jinbao-er was a greedy, lustful little rascal.
Don’t let his refined appearance in front of outsiders fool you; he was actually quite “mensez” (outwardly calm but inwardly passionate).
And of course, he was a little money-grubber.
After all, for the first twenty years of his life, he had always been short on cash.
Jinbao-er took a sip of the soy milk Heng-ge handed him.
It was very sweet, and very warm.
…
Today was the class meeting.
The counselor was in the lecture hall explaining start-of-term matters.
They even mentioned the postgraduate entrance exam, saying the current employment environment was fierce and those planning to take the exam should prepare early, or else they’d be in a frantic rush when the time came.
Of course, most people just listened half-heartedly and didn’t care much.
After the announcements, the election for class officers began.
Jinbao-er listened intently to the counselor on the podium.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yuheng was sprawled across the desk, wearing white Bluetooth earphones, boredly scrolling through videos.
Jinbao-er glanced over from time to time and noticed he was scrolling through several “thirst trap” videos of beautiful women the kind with large breasts and curvy hips.
Jinbao-er inwardly rolled his eyes.
Are all straight men like this?
Zhao Yuheng seemed to notice Jinbao-er’s none-too-friendly gaze. He turned his head and looked at him with large, puppy-dog eyes.
“Watch together.”
No asking, no extra words he just moved the phone between the two of them and continued scrolling through his “babes” videos quite openly.
Jinbao-er: “……”
……
Soon, it was time to elect the class officers.
The counselor went through the positions one by one.
First was the Class Monitor. Those interested went up to the podium for a self-introduction, followed by a vote.
There were seven or eight people competing just for Class Monitor.
Naturally, everyone’s introductions were a bit stumbling.
In the end, the person who got the most votes was the prettiest one who left the strongest impression.
Jinbao-er wanted to snag an easy, idle position; it would be good for bonus credits later.
He had inquired and found that scholarships and such all depended on credit points.
But the thought of standing in front of so many people for a self-introduction really scared him.
When he got scared, his whole body would get nervous and start to tremble.
Seeing as it was about to be the turn for the position he wanted Psychological Health Commissioner he was incredibly anxious.
“What’s wrong?”
Zhao Yuheng sensed the abnormality beside him and cast a concerned look.
“I’m a bit nervous.”
Zhao Yuheng looked at the counselor on stage again, then turned back to him: “Want to be the Psychological Health Commissioner?”
Seeing that the counselor was about to say, “If no one runs, I’ll just appoint someone,” Zhao Yuheng suddenly reached out with his palm-like large hand, grabbed Jinbao-er’s right hand, and thrust it high into the air!
That hand was gripped so tightly in Zhao Yuheng’s palm that it couldn’t move at all.
“Teacher! Over here!”
Zhao Yuheng’s voice was shockingly loud, like a thunderclap on clear ground, instantly drowning out all the whispering in the classroom.
The whole class was stunned and turned their heads in unison to look over.
Jinbao-er turned pale with fright.
His whole body froze as if he’d been electrocuted.
He tried desperately to pull his hand back, but it was held fast by Zhao Yuheng’s iron-clamp-like grip.
The counselor pushed up their glasses: “This student… Do you want to run?”
“Not me!” Zhao Yuheng roared.
Jinbao-er had just let out a sigh of relief when, in the next second, Zhao Yuheng shook his hand back and forth like he was holding up a trophy.
“It’s him, Gan Jinbao!”
Jinbao-er was so embarrassed he wanted to find a hole in the ground to crawl into. He tried to stand up to explain, but Zhao Yuheng pressed down on his shoulder, making it impossible for him to rise.
“Student Gan Jinbao, do you wish to run?” the counselor asked with a smile.
Jinbao-er’s face flushed deep red. He opened his mouth, his voice as quiet as a mosquito: “I… I want to…”
The classroom was too noisy; no one heard him at all.
“Louder! Did you not eat breakfast?!” Zhao Yuheng barked a bit fiercely from the side, frustrated by his lack of spirit.
Jinbao-er shivered. He snapped his head up and shouted with all his might.
“I WANT TO!”
After that shout, he almost passed out from lack of air.
Finally, Jinbao-er tremulously went up to the podium and gave a self-introduction.
Afterward, two other people raised their hands to run for the position.
This self-introduction was essentially a way to solicit votes.
The two students who followed said that if they became the Psychological Health Commissioner, they would definitely be serious and responsible in solving everyone’s problems.
Jinbao-er felt a bit chagrined, realizing he hadn’t said anything like that.
Only Zhao Yuheng was single-mindedly playing on his phone, seemingly not noticing Jinbao-er’s inner disappointment.
When the final vote came, Jinbao-er found his tally was leading by a landslide.
Out of 30 people in the class, nearly two-thirds voted for him; the other two only had single-digit votes.
“Alright, Gan Jinbao-er is appointed as the Psychological Health Commissioner,” the counselor announced from the podium.
Jinbao-er was dumbfounded.
But why?
He had just felt that hope was slim, so how was he leading by so much now?
It wasn’t until he noticed the students looking at him and Zhao Yuheng with “gossip” expressions that he thoughtfully opened his phone.
The class group chat was filled with notifications for “Red Packet” collections.
Jinbao-er didn’t care who sent it and quickly tapped one.
He got $30text{ yuan}$!
Then he noticed the sender: Grandpa Doesn’t Eat Celery (Zhao Yuheng).
The message content was: Psychological Health Commissioner Gan Jinbao-er is treating everyone to milk tea.
It was sent five minutes ago exactly during the voting.
Jinbao-er instantly turned his gaze to Zhao Yuheng.
He saw his “big wolf-dog” looking back at him with a grin.
“Heng-ge, how much money did you send?”
If it was $30text{ yuan}$ per person, knowing his style, he must have sent it to 30 people. That was at least $900text{ yuan}$.
That $900$ could be a whole month’s living expenses.
Wasn’t it a bit of a loss to do this just for a Psychological Health Commissioner position?
$900text{ yuan}$!
“It was only $200text{ yuan}$, as long as you’re happy.”
Was it really only $200$?
Jinbao-er didn’t dare ask for details.
He was afraid it really was $900$.
If so, how could he face Zhao Yuheng?
He could pick up money and keep it.
He could be stingy.
He could be a petty opportunist.
But he wasn’t the kind of person who could accept such massive kindness from someone else with a clear conscience!
