- Chapter 77 - The Heartless Little Fox
The evening breeze was cool, lifting her long hair and the hem of her skirt.
“Xu Shiming.”
Her voice was soft, yet it carried clearly to the man’s ears.
When Xu Shiming saw her, the madness in his eyes intensified, mixed with resentment and greed.
“You finally decided to show up. Listen, give me 500 million, or else-”
“Or else what?” Sang Wan interrupted him, a mocking sneer curling at the corner of her lips. “Or else you’ll hand over all the evidence of your marital infidelity and embezzlement to the police?”
Xu Shiming’s face paled as he scrambled to defend himself. “Y-You’re talking nonsense!”
“Whether I’m talking nonsense or not, you know the truth.” Sang Wan stepped closer, her presence commanding. “Out of respect for the effort you put into your little act, I’ll let you off this time. You’d better quit while you’re ahead.”
“Stay out of trouble, and I won’t pursue this further. Otherwise, embezzlement alone would land you in prison for years.”
Her words were firm and unyielding.
“That money was rightfully mine! I genuinely wanted to marry Sang Jingchu back then, but what about her? She never accepted me, wouldn’t even let me touch her. A whore pretending to be pure!”
Lu Tingzhou couldn’t bear to listen any longer. With a slight wave of his hand, two black-suited bodyguards swiftly approached from behind, seizing the still-shouting Xu Shiming by his arms. They dragged him away like a lifeless dog, clearing the scene in moments.
Silence returned instantly.
Lu Tingzhou took off his trench coat and draped it over her slender shoulders, pulling her back into his embrace.
“Why didn’t you listen to me?” His tone held a hint of reproach, but it was overshadowed by deep concern. “There was no need to engage with him. If he caused trouble again, we could’ve just called the police.”
Sang Wan buried her face in his warm chest, murmuring, “But… I called him ‘Dad’ for over twenty years. We lived under the same roof for more than two decades.”
“Silly girl,” Lu Tingzhou murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Showing mercy to a wolf is cruelty to yourself. Everything he’s facing now is the retribution he deserves.”
She fell silent, only tightening her arms around the man who had become her unwavering support.
That night, Lin Hao, accompanied by a top-tier lawyer, paid Xu Shiming a “visit.”
The lawyer slid a thick stack of documents across the table toward him.
“Mr. Xu, these are the complete records of your embezzlement and illicit financial dealings during your tenure as general manager of the Sang Corporation.”
“The sums involved are more than enough to keep you behind bars for the rest of your life.”
“Out of consideration for your past ties with Miss Sang, Mr. Lu is offering you a chance. Stay out of her sight, or these documents will become the evidence that seals your fate.”
Xu Shiming stared at the meticulously detailed records, every transaction laid bare, his face ashen, his body drenched in cold sweat.
He knew it was over.
…
The next day, Sang Wan drove alone to a convalescent home on the outskirts of the city.
After two days of rest, she felt lighter, her spirits refreshed. She had come specifically to visit her grandfather.
The old man was in good spirits today, awake and alert.
Seeing the pleasant weather, Sang Wan pushed his wheelchair through the small garden, with Uncle Liu following behind, carrying a blanket.
“Wanwan, don’t worry. The old man has been eating and sleeping well lately. Aside from his mental state, all his physical indicators are normal.”
Sang Wan smiled warmly. “Thank you for everything, Uncle Liu.”
Uncle Liu smiled politely. “It’s the least I can do. You’ve treated me well, so I should take good care of the old master.”
Just then, Uncle Liu’s phone rang. When he pulled it out and saw the name on the screen, a flicker of panic flashed in his eyes.
Watching Sang Wan’s retreating figure, he pressed his lips together. “Wanwan, I need to take this call. Could you sit with the old master for a while?”
Sang Wan nodded. It was early autumn, and the afternoon sun was warm as she wheeled her grandfather to a seat near the rockery.
A light breeze had picked up, and worried that her grandfather might catch a chill, she remembered the blanket was still in Uncle Liu’s hands.
She stood up and walked toward him as he answered the call not far away.
The garden was quiet, and as Sang Wan approached, she faintly overheard his hushed voice.
“…Don’t worry, the medicine… he’s been taking it on schedule…”
“Nothing will go wrong.”
Sang Wan didn’t think much of it and called out lightly, “Uncle Liu.”
Uncle Liu didn’t turn around. She only noticed his back stiffen before a loud clatter, his phone had fallen to the ground.
“Uncle Liu, what’s wrong?” Sang Wan walked over with a light, natural tone.
“N-nothing…” Uncle Liu bent to pick up his phone, beads of sweat already forming on his forehead. “Something… something came up at home. I’m a bit distracted. Did I startle you?”
Sang Wan studied his evasive gaze, feeling concerned. “Are you in some kind of trouble? You’ve taken such good care of my grandfather. If there’s anything, you can tell me. I’ll help if I can.”
“No, no need to trouble yourself. It’s a small matter. I can handle it.” Uncle Liu waved his hands repeatedly, avoiding eye contact.
Sang Wan nodded and didn’t press further, but her instincts told her something was off with Uncle Liu.
After leaving the nursing home, Sang Wan sat in her car, her worry resurfacing as she recalled Uncle Liu’s nervousness.
She took out her phone and dialed Qi Qi’s number.
“Qi Qi, have someone look into Liu Zhiqiang, the caregiver for my grandfather.”
“See if something’s going on at home. I don’t want him distracted while taking care of Grandpa.”
Hanging up, Sang Wan gazed out the window at the scenery speeding past, her eyes gradually turning cold.
Hopefully, she was just overthinking it.
…
Though the internet hadn’t exposed Song Xinran for plagiarism, the companies that had initially planned to hire her at high salaries all rejected her at the same time.
These days, she had been hiding at home, drowning her sorrows in alcohol.
“Big sis, don’t give up like this. If you quit now, wouldn’t it be letting Sang Wan off too easily?”
Song Zixi despised Sang Wan. Everyone on set fawned over her, adored her.
With Lu Tingzhou’s backing, she was treated like a princess, surrounded by people and protected by bodyguards around the clock.
Song Zixi had debuted a year earlier than Sang Wan, and they had once been evenly matched. But now, because Sang Wan had latched onto Lu Tingzhou, she had been ruthlessly trampled underfoot.
“What else can I do? Sun Meixi said the Lu family patriarch is already scouting marriage candidates for Lu Tingzhou. I was never in the old man’s good graces, just a tool he used to drive Sang Wan away.”
Song Xinran clutched a bottle of liquor, her eyes glazed with drunkenness.
“You still have Kaikai. As long as we have Kaikai, Lu Tingzhou can’t just abandon you.”
Song Zixi knew it would be hard for Song Xinran to marry into the Lu family, but as long as it wasn’t Sang Wan, she didn’t care.
Jealousy was a distorting force, and she was the one twisted by it.
All she wanted was to watch Sang Wan fall from the clouds into the mud, discarded after Lu Tingzhou grew tired of her, left to rot in the filth.
“Sis, since all those big companies have turned you down, why don’t you go find Lu Tingzhou and have her set up a studio for you? That way, you’ll be the boss and won’t have to put up with anyone else’s attitude.”
Song Xinran, who had just taken a swig of wine, brightened at the thought.
If she couldn’t have the person, she might as well find a way to get the money and resources.
The next day at noon, Lu Tingzhou received a call from his grandfather, summoning him to Moyuxuan. The old man claimed a few old friends hadn’t seen him in a while and wanted to have a meal together.
Lu Tingzhou didn’t think much of it and headed straight to Moyuxuan after work.
To his surprise, there were only four people in the private room: Lu Qishan, the Lin couple, and Lin Yao.
Lu Tingzhou understood immediately.
His initially calm expression gradually darkened with frost.
“Uncle Lin, Aunt Lin.”
But basic courtesy was still necessary, after all, it took two to tango.
“Tingzhou, it’s been so long since we last saw you. You seem thinner than before.”
Lin Yao sat to the side, her smile gentle, her eyes shining as she gazed at Lu Tingzhou.
What woman wouldn’t be drawn to such a refined and extraordinary man?
Lu Tingzhou was the most captivating figure in Shencheng’s high-society circles. It was a shame he’d been taken by Sang Wan.
But she still had a chance. Since Lu Qishan didn’t accept Sang Wan, she wouldn’t hesitate to steal him away.
“I’ve been busy lately,” Lu Tingzhou replied coolly.
Lu Qishan scoffed inwardly, unimpressed. Busy chasing after a woman, no doubt.
That little vixen had bewitched him, making him run around all the time. Thankfully, he had kept his second son in check, otherwise, who knew what mess he might stir up behind his back.
He had always thought his third son was the most steadfast, yet here he was, publicly announcing a relationship on the company’s official website for a woman.
He really had the audacity.
“Brother Tingzhou, you must be hungry. Try this, Uncle Lu said you prefer light flavors, so this should suit you.”
Lin Yao generously served him a dish, but Lu Tingzhou subtly moved his bowl and chopsticks aside.
“Thank you, I’ll help myself.”
Her smile stiffened, and she faltered awkwardly. The Lin couple quickly signaled their daughter to serve Lu Qishan instead.
“Then I’ll give this to Uncle Lu. Let him try it.”
Lin Yao was frustrated but couldn’t show it. She genuinely liked Lu Tingzhou. Catching her parents’ meaningful look, she curved her lips back into a smile.
Lu Qishan was pleased, the girl was quick-witted, turning the awkwardness around by serving him instead.
He mentally gave Lin Yao a ninety out of a hundred.
By the end of the meal, everyone except Lu Tingzhou was in high spirits.
…
Sang Wan had woken up late and arranged to have lunch with Su Mo and Bai Wei.
As they finished paying and stepped out, she spotted Lu Tingzhou standing beside Lu Qishan, exiting with the Lin family of three.
Lu Qishan was chatting and laughing with Mr. Lin, while Lin Yao’s gaze lingered on Lu Tingzhou, her shy, infatuated expression making her feelings all too obvious.
When their eyes met, Lu Tingzhou moved to approach her, but Lu Qishan blocked him.
“If you dare go over, I’ll humiliate her right now.”
Lu Tingzhou pressed his lips into a thin line, his voice low. “Don’t waste your efforts. You can’t control me.”
Lu Qishan snorted. “Let me make this clear, that woman Sang will never set foot in the Lu family!”
Without a flicker of emotion, Lu Tingzhou replied, “Unless I never marry, my wife will be her and no one else.”
The old man glared at him furiously but held back his temper in front of the Lin family.
Sang Wan noticed Lu Tingzhou remained silent, and with Lu Qishan and outsiders present, she didn’t approach him. Instead, she left with Su Mo and Bai Wei.
“What’s Lu Tingzhou’s deal? Pretending not to know us?” Su Mo muttered. “What’s he doing, blind dating or something?”
Bai Wei shot her a look, as if to say: Girl, stop stating the obvious.
Su Mo caught on and immediately mimed zipping her lips shut.
Her dear Sang Wan had finally been happy these past few days, she really needed to watch her big mouth.
Though Sang Wan didn’t say it aloud, she understood perfectly well that Lu Qishan would be thrilled if she and Lu Tingzhou fought, preferably cutting ties for good.
She believed Lu Tingzhou wasn’t acting of his own free will.
So, she didn’t dwell on it. After shopping with Su Mo for two hours, she returned home feeling tired and dozed off almost immediately.
In her drowsy haze, she felt the bed dip beside her, followed by a strong pair of arms pulling her into an embrace.
“You’re back?” Sang Wan rubbed her eyes. “Did I sleep for long?”
“No, nothing important came up this afternoon, so I came home early.”
Lu Tingzhou’s warm lips brushed against her earlobe, sending a tingling shiver down her spine.
“Stop it.”
She pushed him away.
“You heartless little thing. I was worried you’d be upset, but here you are, sleeping soundly.”
Between kisses, he nipped lightly at her earlobe.
