- Chapter 66 - Compensate Properly
“So, what if they find out? Don’t worry, with Sun Meixi around, nothing will happen.”
Wang Sheng scoffed, his tone dripping with calculation.
“Xu Shiming is just an empty shell now. Why are you still clinging to him?”
Lin Lan froze. “You mean…”
“Divorce.”
Wang Sheng’s voice was icy and decisive.
“While he still has some personal assets left, divorce him immediately and take half. As for your son, the only reason we let him take the Xu surname was to inherit the Sang family’s business.”
“Now that the company belongs to Sang Wan, what’s the point of him still being a Xu?”
The unease in Lin Lan’s eyes gradually shifted from panic to something darker and more ruthless.
“You’re right. That useless Xu Shiming, always hesitating and second-guessing, he brought this on himself.”
“As for your daughter, don’t take her with you. Sun Meixi said she can’t stand her. Let her stay with Xu Shiming, at least he still has some money.”
Lin Lan hesitated briefly, but then she thought about how divorcing him would only give her half his assets. The other half could be left for her daughter to keep an eye on.
…
For two peaceful days of filming, her sleep had improved significantly.
Without Lu Tingzhou’s nightly disruptions, falling asleep had become difficult, so she resorted to running on the treadmill instead.
She discovered that exhaustion really did lead to better sleep.
Just as Sang Wan finished her run, drenched in sweat and about to shower, the door to her room swung open.
Seeing who entered, her brows instantly furrowed.
Only one night apart, and here he was again.
“President Lu, don’t you have anything better to do? A company that big, and you’re just… free?”
Lu Tingzhou smirked at her exasperated expression. “With you haunting my thoughts, my motivation is high, and my efficiency is unmatched.”
Sang Wan bit her lip, glaring at him. Though no one dared to mention what happened in the makeup room that day, she could feel the amused glances from others.
It was mortifying.
“Focus on your work. If my assets shrink, I’ll fire you.”
Lu Tingzhou ignored her jab. He hadn’t slept well last night, and he’d rather waste time traveling here than endure another restless night.
He stepped forward, closed the door behind him, and turned the lock.
The crisp click sounded like a command, instantly altering the atmosphere of the room.
His gaze raked over her.
Fresh from her run, she wore only a black sports bra, the thin fabric damp with sweat and clinging to the curves of her youthful figure.
Below, matching yoga pants hugged the swell of her hips and the long, straight lines of her legs.
Her cheeks were flushed a tempting pink from the heat, a few damp strands of hair sticking to her forehead. Her peach-blossom eyes, glistening with moisture, now glared at him with faint irritation.
A living, breathing temptation.
His thoughts already wandering, Lu Tingzhou bent down and scooped her up effortlessly. Covered in sweat? Time for a shower.
“Put me down! I can shower by myself.”
“We’ll shower together.”
He stated it so shamelessly that Sang Wan’s ears burned.
Her face flushed crimson in an instant.
“Too late to be shy now. Is there any part of you I haven’t seen?”
He chuckled, the vibration rumbling through his chest.
As the little fox in his arms buried her face against him, he added, “Not just seen, I’ve washed every inch of you too.”
Furious, Sang Wan pinched his waist and muttered under her breath, “Have you no shame?”
A soft hiss escaped him before his laughter deepened, rich with amusement.
“Qi Qi is still downstairs, can’t you-”
“She’s already left for the hotel.”
With those words, his warm, thin lips pressed against hers.
Two days of longing melted into a deep, lingering kiss.
…
As everything settled back into calm, Sang Wan spoke weakly, “I’m going to Jing City on Saturday. Don’t bother coming over.”
“What are you going to Jing City for?”
Lu Tingzhou was displeased. He had been counting the days from Monday to Saturday, looking forward to spending two days with her, only for this…
“There’s a design competition. My professor encouraged me to submit my work, and the results will be announced on Saturday.”
Sang Wan was fairly confident. After all, her mother’s original design had already been outstanding, and after her adjustments, the comfort and aesthetic were even better suited for women in their 30s.
A glimmer of delight flickered in Lu Tingzhou’s eyes. “I didn’t realize you were still keeping up with it.”
“Of course. I have a side account on Weibo with a few hundred thousand followers. I post my design drafts there.”
Watching the smug little smile on her face, Lu Tingzhou pinched her nose. “My Wanwan is so impressive.”
“Stop pinching my nose. Good thing it’s the real deal.”
Lu Tingzhou lowered his gaze to the soft, fragrant woman nestled in his arms. The things hidden in his heart, he didn’t want her to know, afraid she wouldn’t be able to bear it.
But on his way here, he had turned it over in his mind again and again, and ultimately decided she had the right to know the truth.
“Wanwan, I’ve made progress on the Sang Group’s accounts you asked me to look into. Do you want to hear it?”
Sang Wan, lazily nuzzling against his chest, instantly sobered up at his words.
She lifted her head, her peach-blossom eyes, usually brimming with laughter, now clear and bright.
“I do,” she said firmly.
Lu Tingzhou held her tighter, resting his chin atop her head, his voice low and steady, deliberately gentle.
“Three years ago, the Sang Group’s financial crisis was orchestrated by Xu Shiming.”
Sang Wan’s body stiffened slightly.
“He colluded with Lin Lan, exploiting their positions to systematically short the Sang Group. The funds were funneled through several shell companies before finally being transferred to a tech company wholly owned by Lin Lan.”
His voice was soft and measured, trying to cushion the blow with as much tenderness as possible.
A brief silence fell between them. Lu Tingzhou pressed a light kiss to the top of her head, letting her feel his love and warmth.
After a moment, he spoke again. “It was after your grandfather transferred all his shares in the Sang Group to me.”
“So…”
“Your grandfather most likely discovered their scheme. That’s what triggered his stroke.”
As he finished, he looked down at the woman in his arms.
But the expected shock, devastation, or even tears never came.
Sang Wan simply leaned against him quietly, still as a lifeless porcelain doll.
Her lashes were lowered, casting faint shadows under her eyes, obscuring her expression.
Lu Tingzhou’s heart clenched inexplicably.
He raised his hand, brushing his thumb gently over her cool cheek.
“Wanwan?”
Sang Wan slowly lifted her gaze, her eyes as calm as still water, without a ripple.
She merely let out a soft “Mm.”
Her unnervingly composed reaction stirred unmistakable unease in Lu Tingzhou’s dark, fathomless eyes.
He pinched her chin, forcing her to meet his gaze.
“Why are you so calm?”
A probing note crept into his voice.
“Did you… already know?”
Sang Wan’s long lashes fluttered before she finally spoke, her voice quiet but clear.
“I had my suspicions.”
She looked at him, her gaze unwavering.
“Ever since you told me all the Sang family shares were under my name, I’ve had my suspicions. I know Xu Shiming’s character too well, there’s no way he’d willingly accept Grandfather treating him like this.”
“A man who marries into a family is more sensitive. Grandfather’s actions were clearly meant to guard against him, which would bruise his pride.”
She didn’t mention her true parentage, that was her mother’s lifelong reputation, something she couldn’t casually reveal to anyone, not even Lu Tingzhou.
This was something she needed to investigate herself.
“Lin Lan and their relationship…”
“It doesn’t matter anymore. They’ve lost everything now, and I don’t want to dwell on it.”
Lu Tingzhou’s words were cut off by Sang Wan. She didn’t want him to dig any deeper, her secret wouldn’t hold if he did.
To him, it seemed Sang Wan was still holding onto some filial sentiment. After all, no matter how despicable that man was, he was still her father.
Seeing the resilience in the girl’s eyes, so at odds with her delicate appearance, the last trace of worry in Lu Tingzhou’s heart dissipated.
His little fox was far stronger than he’d imagined.
The tension in the man’s jawline softened gradually.
He leaned down, but this time it wasn’t the aggressive probing from before. Instead, it was a tender, lingering kiss pressed against her lips.
“My baby Wanwan has grown up.”
His voice was low and husky, laced with relieved affection.
The kiss deepened slowly.
Sang Wan was breathless under his touch, her body melting against him.
Lu Tingzhou’s hands kneaded her slender waist with just the right pressure, his voice roughened with desire.
“I have plans this weekend and can’t go to Beijing with you.”
He paused, resting his forehead against hers, his heated breath fanning across her face.
“So tonight… you’ll have to make it up to me.”
Sang Wan’s cheeks burned crimson, as if they might drip blood.
This man, couldn’t he think of anything decent?!
“No,” she pushed against his firm chest, her voice too weak to be convincing. “I have filming tomorrow, and you already just…”
“Please, no more… okay?”
Lu Tingzhou chuckled lowly, the vibration of his chest resonating against her palm.
Instead of stopping, he lifted her effortlessly into his arms.
“Ah!”
Sang Wan gasped and instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck.
Without hesitation, he carried her straight into the bathroom.
The spacious bathroom was already misty with steam.
Lu Tingzhou set her down on the cool countertop, her back pressed against the large mirror behind her.
He stood before her, hands braced on either side, caging her between himself and the mirror.
“You-”
Before she could speak, his deep, mesmerizing voice interrupted.
“Baby, look in the mirror.”
Sang Wan instinctively turned her head.
In the reflection, she saw herself, hair disheveled, cheeks flushed, her peach-blossom eyes glistening with a hint of allure.
Her lips, freshly kissed, were a vivid, tempting red.
And behind her, Lu Tingzhou’s tall frame enveloped her completely.
His collar was open, revealing marks she’d left earlier, the belt of his robe loosely tied.
The sight…
Shame sent her pulse into chaos.
Lu Tingzhou leaned in, his lips brushing her ear, his warm breath sending electric shivers down her spine.
Sang Wan seemed to realize what he intended, panic flickering in her eyes.
“Baby… don’t be afraid.”
Lu Tingzhou gently ruffled her hair, as if soothing her.
Sang Wan’s breathing was completely erratic.
She stared at her own disheveled, love-drunk reflection in the mirror, her heart pounding wildly.
She didn’t repeat the words “I don’t want to,” because even if she said them, he wouldn’t believe her.
The all-encompassing, overwhelming sensory stimulation in the bathroom was driving her insane.
She turned her head, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, and clutched Lu Tingzhou’s arm, her voice trembling with a mix of pleading and desperation.
“Lu Tingzhou… let’s go out, okay? Please?”
She was worried about her own fragile body.
Of course, Lu Tingzhou understood her little concern, not only understood, but he was also afraid he might accidentally hurt her.
Looking down at the delicate, alluring woman in his arms, his Adam’s apple bobbed, his voice rough with restraint.
“Alright.”
Before Sang Wan could even sigh in relief, she was lifted into the air again.
The man carried her out of the bathroom in long strides, returning to the disheveled bed.
But this time, he didn’t pin her beneath him.
Instead, he gripped her slender waist and settled her on top of him.
Sang Wan’s eyes widened in shock.
She met his dark, fathomless gaze, swirling with something she couldn’t decipher, something scorching enough to consume her whole.
Lu Tingzhou curved his lips into a wicked, mesmerizing smirk.
Tilting his head up, he kissed her trembling lips.
“Baby, tonight… I’ll teach you something new.”
