- He Lost Control with Jealousy — What Happened to Being Untouchable?
- Chapter 55 - A Son's Status Depends on His Mother
Seeing that Shen Yubai seemed to have something to discuss with Su Mo, Qu You patted Su Mo’s arm and said, “I’ll head out first.”
As the private room door closed, leaving only Su Mo and Shen Yubai inside, the atmosphere grew momentarily awkward.
Su Mo watched as Shen Yubai casually picked up the bottle of Romanée-Conti worth a hundred thousand yuan, poured himself a glass, and then glanced at her.
She couldn’t help but recall the almost intimate proximity they had shared by the wall earlier, and her cheeks flushed with an unyielding blush.
“Did you need something, Mr. Shen?” she mustered the courage to ask.
Shen Yubai swirled the deep red wine in his glass, his peach-blossom eyes slightly raised as he looked at her with a faint, teasing smile. “It’d be a shame not to drink this wine.”
He pushed another clean glass toward Su Mo and poured her a small half-glass.
“Care for a drink?”
Su Mo hesitated for a moment but eventually picked up the glass.
Her nerves had been wound tight earlier, and now that she had relaxed, she could indeed use a bit of alcohol to calm her racing heart.
“Thank you… for earlier,” Su Mo murmured softly as she took a small sip.
If he hadn’t shown up in time, Sang Wan might have been caught eavesdropping by Wang Sheng.
Shen Yubai observed her fair cheeks tinged with pink and her flustered expression, feeling an inexplicable urge to tease her.
“It was nothing,” Shen Yubai leaned back on the sofa, exuding a lazy charm. “Shouldn’t you be apologizing to me instead of thanking me?”
The sudden shift in topic deepened the blush on Su Mo’s face.
She had indeed misunderstood him before and even stormed into his office to point fingers and yell at him.
Su Mo picked up her glass, a little uneasy. “Well… Mr. Shen, I acted impulsively before. I owe you an apology.”
Shen Yubai chuckled lightly and took a sip of his wine. “Using someone else’s wine to apologize, doesn’t that seem a bit insincere, Miss Su?”
Su Mo frowned. So, the man had stopped her just to give her a hard time.
“What kind of sincerity does Mr. Shen want?” Su Mo raised her voice slightly. “Sang Wan paid for this wine, yet here you are, the one profiting from it, drinking it and still finding fault.”
As she spoke, she grabbed the unopened bottle and even the one that was already down to its last fifth, taking them both away.
“Imperial Club allows wine storage. Can’t let certain people profit and then scam the wine too.”
Shen Yubai watched her bristling reaction with an amused smirk, his expression roguish and unrestrained.
“If you really want to apologize, then come back to work at the company tomorrow.”
Su Mo froze, not expecting him to suddenly suggest her return.
Seeing her confusion, Shen Yubai added, “Serving the company is the greatest sincerity.”
Su Mo finally caught on. “Why not just say outright that being your workhorse is the best repayment? Straightforward, anyone would understand.”
Shen Yubai nodded. “As long as you get it. Don’t be late tomorrow.”
Clutching the wine bottles, Su Mo looked at him seriously. “Mr. Shen, I appreciate your kindness, but returning to Shen Corporation is out of the question.”
Shen Yubai narrowed his eyes slightly, a flicker of interest passing through his peach-blossom gaze.
This little one had quite the backbone.
…
Jingyuan.
“Wanwan, open the door.”
Qi Qi had brought Sang Wan home and stayed behind.
She had noticed something was off with Sang Wan during the car ride, and once they arrived, Sang Wan had gone straight into her bedroom.
Standing outside the door, Lu Tingzhou could faintly hear sobbing from inside, his heart aching with worry.
“Wanwan, be good and open the door. Whatever it is, let’s talk it through,” Lu Tingzhou coaxed in a low, gentle voice.
“I don’t want to say anything!” Sang Wan’s voice was weak and listless. “You should go back.”
She had no energy left to argue with him now. The words from Wang Sheng and Lin Lan had struck her like a rebirth.
On the way back, she had been constantly thinking about her mother and father’s relationship.
They had never fought, by all accounts, they should have been a loving couple.
But they had never held hands, and often, her father slept in the study.
Her mother had always claimed she suffered from neurasthenia and that her father snored.
Now, she finally understood: theirs had been nothing more than a marriage of convenience.
Sang Wan stared at her mother’s photo. After crying, her mind felt clearer, and the weight she had carried for years lifted.
She had always thought her father disliked her because she wasn’t a boy. But now it seemed she was just a stepping stone for Xu Shiming.
Xu Shiming had originally been just a sales manager at the Sang Corporation. The only reason he had risen to where he was today was because her mother, Sang Jingchu, had been her grandfather’s only child.
Hearing the silence inside, Lu Tingzhou told Qi Qi to leave first while he stayed behind.
Sang Wan leaned against the headboard, contemplating how to begin investigating the company.
She knew little about the company’s affairs. When she was younger, she hadn’t been involved, and later, Xu Shiming had deliberately kept her away, never allowing her to visit the office.
But before her mother passed away, she had been auditing the company’s accounts. Sang Wan couldn’t have misremembered.
Because on the day of the accident, her mother had mentioned she was busy lately, there had been some issues with the company’s books.
Her initial approach to Lu Tingzhou had been to leverage his influence. Now, it seemed, it was time to act.
Sang Wan lay awake for a long time, her eyes wide open. There was no doubt about it, she was suffering from insomnia.
She left the bedroom and went to the living room in search of medication. Tonight, alcohol wouldn’t be enough to put her to sleep.
She needed pills.
When she spotted the man lying on the sofa, Sang Wan froze.
After a brief pause, she walked over and nudged his leg with her foot.
“Song Xinran is about to rise in status thanks to her child! How long do you plan to keep lying to me?”
A drowsy Lu Tingzhou, jolted awake by the kicks, quickly sat up and took in the sight of the girl standing before him.
He pulled her into his arms, settling her onto his lap.
“What nonsense are you spouting? In my world, there’s no such thing as a woman rising because of her child, only a child rising because of its mother.”
“Liar. Your father was right, you can fool around all you want outside, but when it’s time to settle down, you’ll kick me aside sooner or later, won’t you?”
The more she spoke, the more aggrieved and angry she became, her voice trembling with tears by the end.
Listening to her accusations, Lu Tingzhou felt both heartache and a quiet relief. At least she was finally talking to him again.
This little jealous thing.
With infinite patience, his voice dripping with tenderness, he said, “How could I ever bear to? Besides, do you really think I’m that stupid?”
Sang Wan blinked in confusion. She hadn’t called him stupid.
Lu Tingzhou pulled out his phone, flipped through his album, and showed her a photo. “Have you forgotten the terms of the agreement? If I marry now, it means handing you five billion for nothing.”
Understanding dawned on Sang Wan, and she smiled.
“Wanwan, don’t be stubborn. I’ve told you, if you have questions, just ask me directly.”
Sang Wan’s eyes darted around, a little guilty. “Fine. I’ll ask you directly from now on.”
Lu Tingzhou held the woman in his arms, gently stroking her head as if soothing a pet. Finally, he had calmed this little ruffled kitten.
“Can’t sleep?”
Sang Wan nodded and took the initiative to explain, “Tonight, I saw Wang Sheng and Lin Lan. From their conversation, it seemed Wang Sheng deliberately set up Xu Shiming to sign that betting agreement. I don’t think Xu Shiming has the ability to manage Sang Corporation well. Lu Tingzhou, I hope you can help me take back Sang Corporation.”
Lu Tingzhou frowned, momentarily stunned. “You want me to help you acquire Sang Corporation?”
Sang Wan nodded. “The funds can come from that 500 million of yours.”
Lu Tingzhou laughed. This little fox was an insecure one, she would never get her hands on that 500 million stipulated in the agreement in this lifetime.
“Sang Corporation was founded by your grandfather. Who holds the equity now?”
Sang Wan shook her head. “I’ve never been involved in the company’s affairs.”
Lu Tingzhou chuckled helplessly. “Little thing, you’re eyeing my 500 million, yet you’re so careless about your own tangible interests. Aren’t you afraid Lin Lan and her daughter will take everything from you?”
“I only just thought of that today,” Sang Wan admitted, pouting slightly. “Lu Tingzhou, am I too stupid?”
“It’s fine. As long as I’m smart enough,” he replied. “Don’t worry about Sang Corporation. I’ll handle it. What’s yours won’t be taken by anyone else.”
Sang Wan curved her lips into a smile. Though their future together was uncertain, seizing what she could now and uncovering the truth about the company would at least make their acquaintance worthwhile.
Seeing her emotions stabilize, Lu Tingzhou picked her up. “Shall I sleep with you?”
Sang Wan quickly shook her head, her cheeks tinged with a faint pink. “No. If I sleep with you, I won’t get any rest tonight.”
Lu Tingzhou gazed at her, then lightly pecked her lips. “You’ve got quite the imagination.”
She turned to retrieve medicine from the drawer. “I feel dizzy. I need to take a pill and get some sleep.”
Seeing her exhaustion, Lu Tingzhou didn’t stop her. Letting her rest first was the priority.
After Sang Wan took the medicine, Lu Tingzhou carried her to fetch water, and she clung to him until he placed her on the bed.
“Sleep well. I’ll be outside.”
Watching her close her eyes, Lu Tingzhou stood and left.
Lying on the sofa, he couldn’t help but smile, another night spent dealing with the little fox.
…
The next day, Sang Wan woke at 10 a.m. to find Lu Tingzhou already gone. Qi Qi was waiting for her in the living room, while Aunt Liu had gone to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.
“Sister Wan, Sister Wei called. She said the film set wants you back. Xiao Yan has removed his bandages and can shoot simpler scenes now.”
Sang Wan sighed. Bai Wei was truly a diligent manager, always worried about her having too much downtime.
“Qi Qi, let’s visit your place later. It’s been so long since I’ve seen Aunt Xue, I miss her. Remind her to make dumplings for lunch.”
Qi Qi nodded. “Sure. Mom misses you too. I’ll call her now to get things ready.”
The car glided smoothly toward Qi Qi’s home.
Gazing out the window at the fleeting cityscape, Sang Wan’s heart churned with turmoil, though her expression remained calm.
Aunt Xue was her mother’s closest friend.
If anyone in this world knew the secret of her origins, Aunt Xue was surely one of them.
She needed to find out, was Xu Shiming truly her biological father?
And if, as Wang Sheng had implied, he wasn’t, then who was?
The car stopped in front of an aging residential building.
Qi Qi led Sang Wan upstairs.
As the door opened, a rich aroma enveloped them.
Xue Min, wearing an apron with traces of flour on her hands, beamed at the sight of Sang Wan.
“Wanwan, come in quickly, the dumplings will be done soon. This time was a bit rushed, but next time if you want to eat them, just let Aunt Xue know in advance, and I’ll prepare more fillings for you.”
Xue Min warmly took Sang Wan’s hand, looking at her as if she were her own child.
When Sang Wan was little, Xue Min wasn’t married yet, and whenever she had free time, she would help Sang Jingchu take care of the child.
She adored Sang Wan and often said that if she could have such a beautiful daughter, she’d be completely satisfied.
Perhaps the heavens heard her wish, because she did end up having a daughter, though not as stunning as Sang Wan, she was sweet and thoughtful.
“Aunt Xue, it’s been so long. I should have come back with Qi Qi to see you after wrapping up my last drama, but things kept getting in the way.” Sang Wan curved her eyes into a soft, sweet smile.
“You’re busy, Aunt Xue understands. Just seeing you become more and more successful makes me happy, even if you don’t visit often.”
At the dinner table, steaming hot dumplings were served, plump and white, a delight to the eyes.
Xue Min kept piling them onto Sang Wan’s plate. “Wanwan, eat more. Look how thin you’ve gotten. You can’t keep dieting just for filming.”
Sang Wan took small bites of the dumplings and nodded. “Not at all. I’ve never been able to gain weight since I was little.”
Qi Qi laughed. “Mom, Sis Wan isn’t dieting on purpose, she really just doesn’t gain weight. I’m so jealous.”
Xue Min smiled. “When she was little, she was as skinny as a monkey. Your Aunt Sang used to worry endlessly about her not putting on any weight.”
At the mention of Sang Jingchu, Xue Min’s expression dimmed, her eyes turning slightly red.
Noticing this, Sang Wan set down her chopsticks and sighed softly. “Actually, I have lost a bit of weight recently, but it’s not because of dieting, it’s because of family matters.”
Qi Qi looked up at Sang Wan, puzzled. Didn’t she tell me not to bring it up? Why is she mentioning it now?
“What happened at home?” Xue Min asked anxiously.
Sang Wan pouted, hugging Xue Min’s arm in a somewhat coquettish manner. “Aunt Xue, do you think all fathers in the world dote on their daughters? Or could it be that some don’t like them just because they’re not sons?”
