- He Lost Control with Jealousy — What Happened to Being Untouchable?
- Chapter 52 - Still Won’t Let Me Look
Her shrill scream echoed clearly through the house, reaching Lin Lan’s ears inside.
“Miss Xu, this isn’t about Mr. Xu. We’re here for you.”
Xu Mingyue stared wide-eyed, looking utterly bewildered, as if she couldn’t comprehend what the police were saying.
Xu Shiming watched her foolish expression, feeling more than just disappointment.
Why was Sang Wan successful at everything she did, while Xu Mingyue was nothing but a failure?
The thought made him glance at Lin Lan descending the stairs, his resentment flaring, she was the one who had spoiled her.
Sang Jingchu also doted on Sang Wan, but he balanced rewards with discipline.
Lin Lan, on the other hand, gave Xu Mingyue nothing but the best.
And what was the result? Sang Wan got into the design program at Beijing University, while Xu Mingyue barely scraped together 306 points on her college entrance exams, barely managing to scrape through a few years at some no-name school with a hefty donation.
“Miss Xu, we suspect your involvement in the wire stunt incident at the film studio. Please come with us for questioning.”
Xu Mingyue’s mind went blank, her face instantly turning deathly pale. “Officers, you must have the wrong person. I didn’t do anything!” she stammered.
Then it hit her, she had given that wire technician a pack of cigarettes. But she’d bought it from a nearby store, completely unaltered.
Sure, she wished something would happen to Sang Wan, but Lu Tingzhou had already warned her not to lay a finger on her. Did she have the guts to defy him?
“We’ve gathered evidence. Please cooperate.”
“No, no, I didn’t, I just gave that guy a pack of cigarettes… I…” Her voice rose in panic.
“The facts will be clarified during the investigation. For now, please come with us,” the officer said impassively. “Miss Sang, don’t force us to take drastic measures.”
Xu Mingyue completely lost it, wailing, “I’m innocent! Mom, Dad, I didn’t do it!”
It took Lin Lan a moment to process, this wasn’t about her husband, but her daughter.
Her legs gave out instantly. “Officers, there must be some mistake!”
Another officer pulled her aside, his tone firm. “We’re acting within the law. Cooperate.”
As Xu Mingyue was dragged away, Lin Lan collapsed into hysterics. “Shiming, do something! Last time, Lu Tingzhou scared her half to death. There’s no way she’d dare do something this big!”
“Do something? What can I do? The whole internet’s talking about it. If Xiao Yan hadn’t caught Sang Wan, she would’ve been the one hurt. Do you think Lu Tingzhou would just let this slide?”
Xu Shiming’s words sent Lin Lan crumpling onto the sofa. “Then what do we do? Just watch her go to prison?”
Frustrated and helpless, Xu Shiming suddenly thought of Sang Wan.
When the call came through, Sang Wan had just wrapped up work and was helping prepare dinner with the other show guests, though her role was limited to washing vegetables.
Seeing Xu Shiming’s name flash on her screen, she hesitated before stepping away to answer.
“Wanwan, Mingyue’s in trouble. Can you think of a way to help?”
Xu Shiming’s tone was cautious, a far cry from his usual arrogance.
Sang Wan frowned slightly. “What can I do about her problems?”
The coldness in her voice stung, but Xu Shiming swallowed his anger. “She… she’s been taken by the police. They say it’s related to that accident on set. Maybe you could ask Mr. Lu for leniency.”
A flicker of icy understanding passed through Sang Wan’s eyes.
Xu Mingyue again.
Just how much did she hate herself to repeatedly try to kill her time and again?
It seemed the previous two incidents hadn’t taught her a lesson.
“Xu Shiming, in your eyes, am I stupid or just foolish?”
Sang Wan’s voice was calm and steady, but the accusatory tone already had Xu Shiming on edge. “Wanwan, after all, she called me ‘Dad’ for years. I can’t just-”
“If you’re so moved by her calling you ‘Dad,’ then go plead for her yourself. What does that have to do with me?”
“You!” Xu Shiming was so choked up he could barely breathe. Suppressing his temper, he continued pleading, “Wanwan, she still calls you ‘sister.’ You can’t be so cold-blooded and heartless!”
“Me? Cold-blooded and heartless?” Sang Wan let out a soft laugh, her voice thick with self-mockery and sorrow. “Search your conscience, did she ever consider me her sister when she did those things?”
“If I let this go now, what about next time? Will she just run me over with a car and take my life?”
At the mention of being hit by a car, Xu Shiming’s hand trembled violently. Flushed with anger, he snapped, “Sang Wan, I never thought you could be so heartless. How did you become like this?”
With that, he abruptly hung up.
Listening to the dial tone on the other end, Sang Wan gripped her phone, her fingertips turning white.
How dare he say she had changed? It was her father who had become unrecognizable. Sang Wan barely even knew him anymore.
…
Late at night, the world was quiet. Sang Wan lay sprawled across the soft bed, her smooth calves swaying in the air.
She was in high spirits, video-calling Lu Tingzhou.
Fresh out of the shower, the girl wore a silky spaghetti-strap nightgown, her dark hair cascading loosely, making her delicate face appear even more youthful.
“Xu Mingyue got arrested, was that your doing?” Her tone was sweet and soft as she addressed the man on the screen.
“Mm.” His deep voice, heard in the stillness, inexplicably made Sang Wan’s ears burn.
“Good. Xu Shiming actually had the nerve to call and ask me to plead for her. It’s infuriating!”
Her cheeks puffed up like an angry kitten’s. “What were they even thinking? It’s a miracle I didn’t rush to the police station to add a few more charges!”
Lu Tingzhou watched her furious yet lively and charming demeanor, the corner of his lips lifting imperceptibly.
“Quite the bold talk,” his low voice carried a hint of teasing. “Given a knife, you’d probably tremble before you could even stab anyone.”
“Nonsense, I wouldn’t!” Sang Wan huffed indignantly, though she knew he was right.
She was all bark and no bite.
As they chatted, Sang Wan suddenly noticed the man’s gaze had shifted oddly.
He seemed… to be staring at her chest.
The neckline of her nightgown was a bit low, and with her legs swaying, glimpses of smooth, fair skin peeked through.
Her cheeks warmed, and she instinctively tugged the neckline higher, glaring at him. “Lu Tingzhou, where are you looking?!”
“Pervert!”
Hearing this, Lu Tingzhou arched a brow, his deep eyes still fixed on her. His voice was lazy, laced with a husky allure.
“I’ve touched and kissed them,” he paused, his tone matter-of-fact, “so what’s there left to hide?”
Sang Wan: “…”
Blushing furiously, she wrapped herself tightly in the blanket, leaving only her head exposed.
Lu Tingzhou chuckled softly at her defensive posture, the vibrations of his laughter carrying through the call, sending tingles down Sang Wan’s ears.
…
The filming of the variety show finally entered its last day.
Sang Wan thought of the person waiting for her at home, and her heart fluttered like a little bird returning to its nest.
The eagerness to return, this must be what it felt like.
As soon as the recording ended, she couldn’t wait to board the car back.
The scenery outside the window flew past as Sang Wan rested her chin on her hand, debating whether to head straight to Lu Corporation to surprise him.
Once the idea took root, she couldn’t suppress it.
She wanted to see him, immediately, right now.
The car came to a stop in front of Lu Corporation’s building.
Sang Wan put on her sunglasses and mask before hopping out.
The receptionist at the front desk showed a flicker of surprise upon seeing her. Assistant Lin had specifically instructed that Sang Wan was to be directed straight to the CEO’s private elevator.
Thus, unimpeded, the elevator arrived, and Sang Wan stepped out, practically skipping with joy.
Her graceful figure swayed elegantly as she walked in her stiletto heels.
Just as she neared Lu Tingzhou’s office, she saw Lin Hao emerging from inside.
Lin Hao clearly hadn’t expected her sudden appearance, his eyes flashing with surprise before reverting to the appropriate deference. “Miss Sang.”
“Is Lu Tingzhou in?” Sang Wan asked with a bright smile.
“President Lu is in his office,” he nodded slightly. “But…”
At this moment, Sang Wan’s mind and eyes were entirely filled with thoughts of that man, completely missing the hesitation on Lin Hao’s face.
She nodded, said “thank you,” and then, like a cheerful little butterfly, headed straight for the tightly shut door.
She had never seen Lu Tingzhou at work before, today, she could finally get a good look.
Practically bursting with anticipation, Sang Wan pushed open the heavy wooden door without hesitation.
“Lu Tingzhou!”
Her voice was sweet and soft, brimming with unrestrained excitement, like scattered sunlight rushing straight toward the familiar figure behind the desk.
“I’m back!”
She spread her arms wide and threw herself without hesitation into the man’s broad embrace.
“Surprised? Shocked?”
Lu Tingzhou caught her firmly in his arms, instinctively steadying her before pulling her onto his lap.
His usually deep and cold eyes instantly softened at her arrival, warming with faint amusement.
Sang Wan proudly held up the new handbag on her wrist, small and delicate, its chain glinting under the light.
“Isn’t this bag pretty? I bought it with your card!”
She then wiggled her foot, clad in new shoes. “And these shoes, also bought with your card!”
Tilting her petite face up, her sparkling peach-blossom eyes gazed at him mischievously. “Do you think… I’m expensive to keep?”
Lu Tingzhou lowered his head until his nose nearly brushed hers, his lips curving into a faint yet tender smile.
“Mmm, very surprised, very shocked,” he murmured in his deep, magnetic voice.
His gaze swept over her displayed “spoils” before he nodded slightly. “The bag is beautiful, and the shoes suit you.”
Finally, he kissed her forehead, his tone dripping with undisguised indulgence and affection:
“As for the money to keep you, don’t worry.”
“There’s enough.”
In truth, the girl had never once used that card. But if she wanted to play along, he’d humor her.
Sang Wan was utterly delighted by his words and was about to say more when a clear, slightly delayed round of applause suddenly came from the computer screen.
“Clap, clap, clap…”
Applause?
