- Chapter 28 - Vows Under the Sun
After muting the noisy expert with a single click, Gu Chi began to pack his things with a look of pure bliss, the corners of his mouth twitching upward despite his best efforts to stay cool.
In truth, there wasn’t much to pack, but he felt he had to do something with his hands; otherwise, he was afraid he might actually burst out laughing. He was ecstatic it had been days since he’d been allowed to sleep close to his little disciple!
Wen Linyu didn’t hear an immediate answer. Watching Gu Chi pull various useful and useless items out of his spatial bag with such suppressed excitement, he couldn’t help but smile. He asked again teasingly:
“It’s not peak tourist season yet, so the room next door should be empty. Do you want me to call and ask about it?”
“No!” Gu Chi replied instantly. “I’m sleeping here.”
He looked at Wen Linyu with a trace of accusation in his eyes, as if to say: How can you go back on your word?
“Alright, alright.” Linyu suppressed a laugh. Seeing Gu Chi pull out two sets of clothing, he couldn’t help but ask, “You brought clothes too?”
Gu Chi handed one set to Wen Linyu. “It’s spiritual raiment. Try it on.”
Wen Linyu took it. The fabric was an incredibly soft gauze, distinctly different from ordinary material. It felt warm to the touch, shining like bright moonlight and sliding through his fingers like liquid silk.
The garment was form-fitting and lacked patterns, yet its surface shimmered with a rippling light. Under the right illumination, it would be breathtakingly beautiful.
“I should have given this to you long ago,” Gu Chi murmured. In fact, when he was packing his treasury, his first thought upon seeing this raiment was to personally help Wen Linyu dress in it.
The shark-silk gauze was light and thin; draped over Linyu’s body, it would be stunning.
Mmh, just like that first night—strip him down, then dress him up again.
Now, well… he still wanted to. But he knew now that such behavior was considered “roguish,” and he was afraid of making Linyu angry.
Wen Linyu didn’t think much of it and went to change. Once he put it on, however, he realized something was off—the clothes were transparent. Incredibly so. They had looked white in his hands, but once they touched his skin, they melded to his body, becoming more and more translucent until they were nearly invisible to the naked eye.
Yet, they hadn’t vanished. He could feel the fabric—invisible yet enveloping him. It didn’t restrict his movements and was indeed light, breathable, and comfortable, but Linyu felt his face heating up for some reason.
Fortunately, he hadn’t changed in front of Gu Chi.
When he emerged, Linyu was wearing his regular clothes over the raiment. Gu Chi asked him, “Well? Did you put it on?”
Wen Linyu nodded. “Yes. I’m wearing it.”
Gu Chi asked again, “Do you like it?”
Linyu’s face felt slightly warm. “I like it.”
Gu Chi was visibly delighted. “That’s good. It was worth the two nights I spent refining and altering it.”
Wen Linyu was surprised. “Teacher made this himself?”
Gu Chi gave him a proud look that said ‘Of course.’ Refining a spiritual tool was child’s play for him, and since it was for Linyu—and meant to be worn close to the skin—he naturally had to do it himself.
Furthermore, he had a matching set. This was what the netizens called “couple’s outfits,” right? Even if outsiders couldn’t see it.
The heat on Linyu’s face intensified. He felt as if he were being enveloped by more than just the fabric.
Linyu had to step out onto the balcony to let the evening breeze cool his skin. The room he’d booked had an excellent view; the balcony faced the sea directly. The sun was just beginning to dip, painting the horizon in a gorgeous crimson glow.
He took a photo of the scene, intended for his private archive, but hearing footsteps behind him, he remembered that the person he most wanted to share it with was right there. He held up his phone and showed Gu Chi the photo. “Look. Isn’t it beautiful?”
Gu Chi stepped closer, looking down at the frozen sea on the screen, then up at Linyu’s smiling eyes. He said without hesitation: “Beautiful.”
He tentatively put an arm around Wen Linyu’s waist. Seeing no resistance, a surge of secret joy and satisfaction flooded his heart.
Wen Linyu let out a soft laugh and leaned closer into Gu Chi’s embrace. This caused the Demon Lord’s joy to amplify; he tightened his grip, pulling Linyu flush against him and letting out a satisfied sigh.
It felt like being submerged in a warm, impossibly soft cloud.
The two stood on the balcony in silence for a while before leaving the room to explore the island’s restaurants.
There weren’t many places to eat on the island, and Linyu had decided that if they didn’t find anything suitable, he would cook for them himself later.
Even though it wasn’t the busy season, they still saw a few tourists. As another young couple passed by, Gu Chi watched them walk away before shifting his gaze to Linyu.
He stole several glances before finally reaching out to take Linyu’s hand. Linyu let out a helpless sigh and said softly, “Teacher, you don’t have to be so careful.”
He had thought he was the one who needed to be cautious.
Wen Linyu lifted their joined hands and, right in front of Gu Chi, interlocked their fingers. “Next time, you can just do this.”
Gu Chi was overjoyed, calling Linyu’s name several times in a voice as soft as honeyed clouds.
From then on, whenever they passed anyone on the path, Gu Chi would “accidentally” display their interlocked hands. With his chin tilted up, he looked like he was showing off to the entire world.
The passersby who were shown off to: “…”
998 let out a series of “tsks.” Look at him. Getting this excited over just holding hands. When he sees what the host has learned from the shop, isn’t he going to launch into space?
Unfortunately, the System wouldn’t be around to see it, as the scene would undoubtedly be censored by a solid wall of mosaics.
998 dusted off some cyber-seed shells and addressed Linyu as they sat down at a restaurant for dinner. “Host, that’s about it. I’m heading out!”
It had seen enough of the Demon Lord’s embarrassing antics and had seen the host’s wish come true. It was satisfied. The vacation was still long, and it was going to find another world to play in!
Wen Linyu paused and replied to the System: “Mmh. Goodbye, System. And… thank you.”
“886 (Bye-bye)!” The little yellow chick waved its wings dashingly and vanished into a streak of light.
His mind fell silent. Only after Linyu and Gu Chi finished dinner and strolled along the beach back to the hotel did Linyu realize the System had left him a parting gift.
It was a pair of rings. Their appearance could be redesigned at will, but their primary function was to sense the location and distance of the other wearer. Even in different space-times, no matter how far they wandered, the rings would guide them back to each other. They would never be lost again.
Wen Linyu loved the gift. That night, he began designing the rings’ appearance in his mind.
It was then that he realized he still hadn’t given Gu Chi a proper gift. Recalling how hurt and shocked Gu Chi had been when Linyu gave that little ribbon bird to Wen Xi, Linyu felt a pang of guilt.
His Teacher wanted his attention so much, yet he had been so negligent. It was wrong of him.
Consequently, Gu Chi received two “compensation” kisses. Gu Chi didn’t even remember the bird incident; he was entirely submerged in the bliss of sharing a bed and getting a “goodnight kiss.” He was deliriously happy.
It was a dizzying, lightheaded feeling.
And he didn’t even realize that the night had only just begun.
After a kiss, the heat rose, and Gu Chi’s breath became scorching. He was infatuated and reluctant to stop, but just as he intended to pull back slightly, his eyes widened. A surge of raw emotion flooded his gaze as he caught Wen Linyu’s wandering wrist.
Wen Linyu’s eyelashes fluttered. He looked up at him and whispered, “Does Teacher not know how?”
In that moment, inspiration struck Gu Chi. He didn’t let go, but he softened his grip, allowing Linyu to lead him. His voice, however, was incredibly hoarse: “I don’t. Does Ayu seem to know quite well? Then… Ayu, teach me.”
Wen Linyu gave a soft, “Okay.”
The night was deep and time stretched long. Outside the window, the waves were both violent and gentle, crashing wave after wave against the shore.
Wen Linyu didn’t leave the hotel room for several days. He felt a tiny bit of regret for provoking Gu Chi. A Demon Lord who had spent a thousand years focused only on cultivation and combat was a force to be reckoned with once he’d tasted “the forbidden fruit.” Just as Linyu had experienced before, Gu Chi’s physical endurance was truly terrifying.
He couldn’t take much more, but fortunately, the items he’d gotten from 998 were incredibly effective. The more he used them, the more proficient he became, and even his own cultivation improved significantly.
Ahem. As expected of the best-selling products.
After several days of trysting, Wen Linyu felt as if he’d lost track of time when he finally stepped out into the sunlight again. Walking onto the beach, he found he didn’t want to move after just a few steps.
The moment the thought occurred, a certain person who was stuck to him like glue immediately picked him up. Gu Chi found a spot with the most comfortable sunlight, laid out the softest cushions, and gently set Linyu down. Before they could be apart for even a second, a warm, solid chest pressed against his back.
Seeing how incredibly attentive he was being, Linyu couldn’t help but ask: “You didn’t have someone teaching you again, did you?”
Gu Chi immediately kicked the long-forgotten expert out of his mind and denied it: “No!” Caring for his wife was a skill he’d mastered on his own; he didn’t need any teachers for that.
Having been abruptly granted his freedom, the “expert” woke up in his own bed in a daze. It was his own room, but the date on his phone told him that everything he’d experienced wasn’t a dream.
Wen Linyu had only asked casually. Lounging lazily in the sun while watching the sea, he remembered that he had originally come here to go beachcombing, yet he hadn’t even touched the water for days.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
His hands were taken and his fingers were being toyed with one by one. It reminded him of how this man had played with his hands when he first came to find him.
He seemed unable to let go, as if no amount of touching was enough.
Linyu sat up slightly and squeezed Gu Chi’s hand back. Under the man’s confused gaze, Linyu pulled out the rings he had finished crafting during his spare moments and slipped one onto Gu Chi’s left ring finger.
Gu Chi’s eyes widened. “!”
Wen Linyu turned Gu Chi’s palm over, placed the other ring in it, and prompted: “Teacher, aren’t you going to put mine on for me?”
Only then did Gu Chi frantically pick up the small ring. With slightly trembling hands, he found Linyu’s finger and slowly slid the ring into place. Then, unable to resist, he placed his hand over Linyu’s and slowly interlocked them.
“When did you make these?”
Two black rings, set with dark crystals. They didn’t look like traditional wedding rings, but once they were on, Gu Chi could sense their true purpose.
“Over the last few days,” Linyu looked back at Gu Chi with a steady gaze. “This way, no matter where you are or where I am, we will never lose each other again.”
Gu Chi’s chest felt like it was bursting with emotion. He kissed Linyu’s eyes. “Of course we won’t.”
He would never let Wen Linyu out of his sight again, even without the rings. But he absolutely adored the gift his little disciple had given him.
Gu Chi felt as if his entire being were bubbling with a sweetness that was beyond words. He spent a long time admiring their ringed hands before finally thinking of other things, whispering incessantly into Linyu’s ear:
“Should we prepare the Dao-Companion ceremony next?”
“We should invite some people. Your brother and sister should be there.”
“Where should we hold it? Do you want to go to my world? The butler would probably be overjoyed, and he knows how to handle everything…”
“How to get back? Heh, that’s no problem at all.”
“What else do you want? Want me to buy an island? A giant cake? Flowers and jewels? You don’t want them? That won’t do! Others have them, so we must have them too!”
