Guess What? The Entire Entertainment Industry Thinks I’m Dead - Chapter 2
After returning to Nanjing, a car picked up Lin Chenghuan and her companion from the airport and drove them straight to Lin Chenghuan’s villa.
Once home, Li Xiaoyi turned on the lights and immediately helped Lin Chenghuan with her luggage and took off her coat.
It had to be said, being on a private jet with only her own people around, not having to wear sunglasses all the time was quite nice. Now, in her spacious home, enjoying Li Xiaoyi’s attentive service, Lin Chenghuan was in a cheerful mood. She picked up the remote, intending to turn on the TV.
But remembering she couldn’t expose her eyes to the light from electronic devices, she quickly deflated.
“When can I start using them again? Probably in three days, right? My eyes aren’t that uncomfortable…”
“It’s hard to say. Maybe three days, maybe five. We’ll follow the doctor’s advice when the time comes,” Li Xiaoyi said with earnest seriousness.
“Alright. You don’t need to be so nervous. It’s not like I’m filming right now.” Actors’ daily care routines were indeed meticulous. Even the slightest change in complexion could send their managers into a panic, with assistants also staying on high alert.
“Yes, Sister Huan.”
Soon, Lin Chenghuan grew utterly bored, unable to play games, use her phone, or even watch TV, she could only listen to it as background noise. Struggling against the temptation of her phone, she took an early bath and went to bed.
“Save me, I need to play Honor of Kings…” Lin Chenghuan felt like she was going insane.
“If Sister Huan wants to rank up, I can play for you… I’m pretty decent at it,” Li Xiaoyi offered timidly.
“Okay.” Though it pained her not to play herself, climbing the ranks was still a consolation.
Who would have thought that this girl wasn’t just a good cook but also skilled at gaming? Fang Yuan’s decision to bring her back was truly thoughtful.
Since parting ways with Xia Yao, Lin Chenghuan had vanished from social platforms like WeChat and QQ, and she never posted on Weibo. She had also gradually grown less responsive to contacts from her entertainment industry friends, and over the past two months, she hadn’t replied to any messages.
But it didn’t matter. When she made her comeback, the connections that mattered would naturally return. As long as she stayed popular, those ties, like work itself, could never truly be severed.
As night fell, Lin Chenghuan finally felt drowsy and drifted off to sleep peacefully.
The next day, she woke up unusually early at seven o’clock and couldn’t help but laugh wryly, she was living like the ancients, rising with the sun and resting at dusk.
The day passed in a mix of boredom and slight fulfillment. It had been a long time since Lin Chenghuan had chatted leisurely with someone, and once she started chatting idly with Li Xiaoyi about all sorts of topics, she felt her whole spirit come alive.
Yet, after two days without her phone, she felt restless and unbearably anxious. At the same time, she couldn’t shake a vague sense of unease.
Something about Fang Yuan’s attitude toward her these past two days felt off. It seemed… overly attentive.
Although Fang Yuan had always been good to her, it had never been to this extent of meticulous concern. And were tickets to Beidaihe really that hard to get? Why resort to a private jet?
Another morning arrived, and Lin Chenghuan woke up early once again. After breakfast, staring at the bright daylight outside, she finally couldn’t take it anymore. What kind of eye condition required avoiding all electronic devices? If she didn’t get to use her phone soon, she would go crazy.
“Xiaoyi, I want to use my phone. Phones are just too fun. I’m willing to trade my health for it.”
“Sister Huan, that’s not a good idea. You still need to take responsibility for your health…” Li Xiaoyi replied hesitantly.
“What kind of illness has such strict precautions? Sister Fang originally said to limit screen time, not to avoid it entirely. Give me my phone.”
“How about… holding out for one more day? At least three days, so we can feel at ease…”
Lin Chenghuan fell silent, a flicker of suspicion rising in her heart as she studied Li Xiaoyi with a probing gaze. Noticing this, Li Xiaoyi quickly put on an ingratiating smile and made another suggestion.
“Sister Huan, do you want to browse something? Do you need to check Xiaohongshu or Bilibili?”
“No. By the way, has Sister Fang done anything to betray me?”
Li Xiaoyi’s eyes twitched, and she immediately shook her head. “Sister Huan, how could you even think that…”
Having spent several months with Li Xiaoyi, Lin Chenghuan recognized this as a sign of guilt, and her suspicions deepened.
“What is she hiding from me?”
“Nothing, nothing at all.”
“Still trying to lie to me! Show me the medical report. Do I… have some incurable disease? A brain tumor, eye cancer, or am I going completely blind?” Lin Chenghuan’s voice was filled with anguish.
“No, Sister Huan’s health is absolutely fine, I swear to heaven.” Li Xiaoyi raised her hand, speaking with conviction.
“Oh, then is there something online I shouldn’t see?” Lin Chenghuan didn’t dwell on pointless worries but immediately shifted her suspicion.
“This… Why would you think that, Sister Huan?”
“You won’t give it to me? Then I’ll find another phone.”
“Sister Huan, please think twice. For the sake of your eyesight, it’s better to hold off for now…” Li Xiaoyi grew visibly anxious.
Lin Chenghuan said nothing more. The two locked eyes in silence, and just as Li Xiaoyi’s resolve was weakening, almost unable to hold her ground, the doorbell suddenly rang.
The residential complex had strict security, so whoever was allowed in by the property management had to be someone familiar. Temporarily letting Li Xiaoyi off the hook, the two walked together to the video doorbell screen.
However, upon reaching the door, Lin Chenghuan froze in place. Staring back at her from the screen was the last person she ever expected to see.
“What… what is she doing here?” Lin Chenghuan gazed at Lu Zhiwei, her former boss whom she hadn’t seen in two years. Despite her gentle features, Lu Zhiwei always carried an authoritative aura. Lin Chenghuan felt a jolt of surprise but quickly reminded herself she no longer had to fear her.
But why did she look so intense? No, perhaps “intense” wasn’t the right word. Though she was trying to remain calm, her eyes and brows betrayed a sense of urgency.
She didn’t even call, just rushed straight to her doorstep. What could be so urgent? Could it be that rumors about the two of them being together had spread online, and she came to discuss it?!
At this thought, Lin Chenghuan felt as restless as if a cat were scratching her. No wonder Fang Yuan didn’t want her looking at her phone or computer. She knew that if Lin Chenghuan saw the rumors, she would clarify them immediately, which would reduce the buzz.
Helplessly, Lin Chenghuan stared at the anxious figure on the screen. She had never wanted to see her in the first place, and now she was even less willing to discuss such a topic with her.
“Open the door for her later and tell her I’m not here, that I went to Sanya for a trip,” Lin Chenghuan instructed Li Xiaoyi before turning and heading upstairs.
“Okay…” Li Xiaoyi replied. Once she saw Lin Chenghuan enter her room on the second floor, she opened the door.
The moment the door opened, Lu Zhiwei looked extremely tense. Startled to see an unfamiliar young woman, she grew even more unsettled.
“Hello, I’m here to see Chenghuan. Where is she?” Lu Zhiwei took a deep breath, trying her best to sound calm.
“No need to be so formal, President Lu. Sister Huan is in Sanya, not here.” Li Xiaoyi gave a slight bow and gestured for her to enter.
“Are you her friend? Chenghuan… how could she be in Sanya? She just went to Beidaihe to see the ocean.”
“Right, one ocean wasn’t enough for her, so she went to check out the tropical one.” Li Xiaoyi chuckled before explaining, “Sister Huan is both a mentor and friend to me, but I haven’t known her as long as you have, President Lu.”
“I see. You must have seen the rumors online. I need to see her in person to feel at ease.” Lu Zhiwei looked intently at Li Xiaoyi, trying to detect any clues from her expression.
“President Lu, you shouldn’t pay attention to those online rumors. She really is in Sanya…”
Lu Zhiwei fell silent for a moment before quickly making a decision. She would search thoroughly for Lin Chenghuan here first, and if she couldn’t find her, then she would go to Sanya.
After changing her shoes at the entrance, Lu Zhiwei walked to the center of the living room. Looking around helplessly, she felt waves of pain and powerlessness wash over her again. If Lin Chenghuan were really here, no matter how deep their conflict was, she would come out to see her.
With such rumors circulating, if Lin Chenghuan was still holding a grudge and making her worry and suffer like this, it wouldn’t be like her at all. Besides, she hadn’t responded to any messages for three days, and her phone was unreachable.
Standing still with a dazed expression, Lu Zhiwei looked so distraught that even Li Xiaoyi felt somewhat sorry for her. She spoke up again, insisting the online news was false. Lu Zhiwei nodded but couldn’t relax.
Upstairs in her room, Lin Chenghuan watched the surveillance footage, feeling increasingly puzzled. At first, Lu Zhiwei seemed not to believe she was in Sanya, but why did her expression grow more and more sorrowful afterward?
Although seeing rumors about the two of them would indeed upset her, it shouldn’t evoke such pain. It was almost as if… she had lost someone or something important.
It seemed she needed to check just how far the online rumors had spread. Her usual phone was with Li Xiaoyi, but there were other phones and tablets scattered around the house.
Lin Chenghuan glanced around and soon spotted a phone on the wireless charging pad next to the computer. Picking it up, she opened it and navigated to Weibo.
The moment she saw the trending searches, her pupils contracted in shock, even more startled than when she had seen Lu Zhiwei outside her door.
#Rumors of Lin Chenghuan’s Death at Qin Island Hospital#
#Beidaihe Suicide#
#Lin Chenghuan’s Depression#
“…” What were these hashtags? How could she possibly have depression over such trivial matters, let alone attempt suicide? This was utterly absurd!
No wonder some colleagues went to great lengths to secretly get injections at nearby hospitals when they were sick, preferring to consult private doctors whenever possible. The extent of these rumors was truly terrifying.
No wonder Lu Zhiwei had rushed over in such a panic. Did she actually believe these outrageous rumors?
