Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 72
It was another rainy night. Wen Youren huddled in a corner, her youthful face masked in terror. A single bun and a bottle of water sat before her. The room was unnervingly quiet while the world outside erupted with the sound of firecrackers.
Three days had passed, and the rain had not stopped.
Today was the day of her father’s funeral. No one spared a thought for the girl in the corner, and no one found her. The door was secured with a silver lock, left behind by a world that did not care.
Wen Yiyue had locked her away to keep her from leaving, claiming she was the one who killed her father and was therefore unworthy of attending the funeral. The relatives remained silent on the matter, but they no longer looked at the girl with any kindness.
As the outside noise faded, only the sound of rain hammering against leaves remained in Wen Youren’s ears. Suddenly, a deafening crack of thunder made her cover her ears in fright. Insults swirled in her mind, accompanied by the image of her father’s bloated body and the diagnosis that her mind and body were “unhealthy.”
She pressed harder against her ears and curled into a ball. Everything felt fake. Suddenly, the wall behind her vanished, leaving her suspended in mid-air. Snakes rapidly coiled around her arms, their bodies constricting as sharp teeth sank into her flesh. Terrified, she screamed and tried to pull them off, but every time she reached out, her hands were bitten.
Wen Youren let out a frantic scream and snapped awake from her deep sleep. At that moment, she saw a ray of sunlight appear. The snakes were gone. Where they had slithered, only raised scars remained, but the pain had vanished.
Shi Wangui was woken by the scream. “What’s wrong?”
Wen Youren rolled up her sleeve, looking at the indelible scars on her arm and the light drizzle outside. Suddenly, she laughed.
Shi Wangui placed a hand over the scars. “Cosmetic procedures are very advanced now. It would be easy to remove them if you wanted.”
“It’s fine.” Wen Youren looked at Shi Wangui with a smile. “Everything is over now.”
Her laughter turned into tears as she leaned into Shi Wangui’s embrace. “Thank you for appearing in my life. It turns out I haven’t been abandoned by the heavens after all.”
Shi Wangui didn’t know why Wen Youren had this sudden outburst, but so much had happened recently. Shi Qin had passed away, Wen Yiyue had been sentenced to death, and now only the two of them remained in this vast house.
“Do you want to leave this place?” Shi Wangui asked suddenly. “I actually minored in psychology in college. I’m not a professional, but I want to accompany you through the rest of your life in my own way.”
Wen Youren murmured, “Leave… I’m willing.”
“Wen Youren,” Shi Wangui said, “you haven’t proposed to me yet.”
Startled by the abrupt change in topic, Wen Youren didn’t react for a second. But a moment later, she dropped to one knee and pulled a ring from her pocket. “Will you… marry me?”
Shocked but not forgetting to hold out her hand, Shi Wangui said, “I will.” Then she immediately asked, “Where did you get a ring?”
Wen Youren slipped it onto her finger; the fit was perfect, the diamond sparkling in the light. “I’ve had it all along. I’ve just been waiting.”
Shi Wangui cupped Wen Youren’s face and gave her a soft kiss. “From now on, you are mine.”
“Okay,” Wen Youren replied.
Shi Wangui had already made up her mind. Shi Qin’s company had been left to her aunt, but her aunt had not been unfair; she cashed out Shi Wangui’s shares at market value. Shi Wangui donated the inheritance and kept only a portion of the money her aunt gave her.
They had many plans. They wanted to see every city. There would be no marriage certificate, but they would only have each other. Shi Wangui wanted to see the grasslands, the mountains, the rivers, and the children they sponsored. She wanted to see the beauty of the world.
From now on, she and Wen Youren would make the world their home.
A week later, the afternoon sun spilled across the streets. A few kittens were napping by the flowerbeds, some purring comfortably.
Near University A, there was a very popular milk tea shop, a favorite spot for couples. The interior was covered in stickers with messages of love and the dreams of many people.
Sun Yi held her milk tea and asked with a hint of uncertainty, “Are you sure about this?”
Shi Wangui had come to tell Sun Yi to move into the house Wen Youren had bought in City A. That way, whenever they returned to the city, they would have a place to stay with her. A house with someone living in it would always feel alive—a flickering candle for them in the vast world. They would no longer restrict themselves to one place; they would go wherever they pleased. Perhaps in their old age, they would return home, but by then, their memories would hold only beautiful nostalgia.
Shi Wangui smiled. “It’s decided. It might be hard to meet in the future, but don’t forget me.”
“Hah,” Sun Yi laughed. “How could I ever forget you? You are my friend forever.” Sun Yi started to cry. She supported her friends’ decision, feeling a mix of sadness and blessing. She had witnessed their journey for so many years.
So much had happened. Sun Yi had gone back once to attend Shi Qin’s funeral. Shi Wangui had stood at the front; though others couldn’t tell, Sun Yi knew that both her suffering and her faint familial ties had vanished. Fortunately, she had Wen Youren now. No matter where she went, she would have someone by her side.
Sun Yi added, “By the way, Wen Youren knew those two friends you made while studying abroad. She even went to see you in secret.”
“…”
So that was it! Shi Wangui had wondered why those two “new” friends knew exactly what she liked to eat and would even cook for her. Especially one night when she had been drinking; she woke up to a familiar scent. She had thought everyone’s cooking tasted the same, but now it seemed that meal had been made by Wen Youren.
Seeing Shi Wangui remain silent with only a smile, Sun Yi quickly tried to distance herself. “Don’t say I told you!”
Sun Yi had discovered this while processing travel reimbursements; Wen Youren had been clever enough to actually conduct business there so Shi Qin wouldn’t find out.
“Am I that kind of person?” Shi Wangui said. “Some things belong in the past; there’s no need to dwell on them. She’s here.”
Wen Youren’s first task in City A had been coordinating work with the aunt. When the aunt learned the shares were in Shi Wangui’s name, she insisted on not buying them out at market value but instead paying out dividends regularly. The aunt worried they might struggle and wanted to ensure they had a stable income. Though she hoped Shi Wangui would live with her, she respected that it wasn’t easy for two women to finally be together. She let them have their way.
Today, Wen Youren wore gold-rimmed glasses and a matching couple’s hoodie selected by Shi Wangui. Sitting together, they were a beautiful sight.
Sun Yi smiled. “You two really suit each other.”
Shi Wangui put her hands on her hips. “Oh? You’re just noticing?”
“Do you know what you look like right now?” Sun Yi teased. “A clever fox raising a little cat who only knows how to eat and drink.”
Shi Wangui frowned immediately. “Who is the fox and who is the cat?”
“Isn’t it obvious?” Sun Yi replied.
Shi Wangui’s most striking feature was her large, spirited eyes and thick, beautiful lashes. Wen Youren, who rarely smiled, looked even more like a “golden fox” in her glasses.
“You… you are the fox,” Wen Youren said comfortingly, stroking Shi Wangui’s head. “In our house, it’s always Wangui who takes care of people.”
Sun Yi pursed her lips. She shouldn’t have said anything; she was just being fed “dog food” (public displays of affection) now. “Fine, Wangui takes care of people. Where is your first stop?”
Shi Wangui glanced at Wen Youren, then nodded. “The far north. To see the snow. We might rent a house there and live for a while.”
“Then bring plenty of clothes. It’s very cold there. I hope you have a wonderful time,” Sun Yi said.
A server approached them with a smile. “We have cards here where you can write down your wishes or dreams. we won’t take them down; the shop will keep them forever. Would you like some?”
Shi Wangui nudged Wen Youren to go get them. “Thank you, we’d like that. Since we’re here, we definitely want to leave a memento.”
Wen Youren returned from the counter with two heart-shaped cards. Shi Wangui wrote her name on both, then gave one to Wen Youren. They ended up writing Shi Wangui and Wen Youren. On the other card, all three of them wrote their names, adding Wang Hu’s name in the corner, wishing for their friendship to last forever.
Sun Yi posted the cards one by one on the display wall, feeling an unexpected pang of reluctance. After high school graduation, she knew they would meet again. But this time… she didn’t know when the next meeting would be.
Shi Wangui took a photo and sent it to Wang Hu. “Perfect.”
Sun Yi smiled and said, “My lunch break is almost over. I have to get back to work.”
“Okay,” Shi Wangui and Wen Youren replied.
At the door, Sun Yi suddenly turned back. “Do you think it will be a long time before we see each other again?”
Shi Wangui held up the photo she had just taken. “It won’t be.”
Sun Yi smiled. “I’ll look forward to that day.”
After Sun Yi left, Shi Wangui pulled Wen Youren out of the shop. Their luggage was packed, and they had a 5:00 PM flight. They just needed to head to the airport.
As they walked, the sun shone down on them. They walked with fingers interlocked, their matching clothes a testament to their deep bond. Along the way, they received countless gazes of blessing and admiration.
As the plane took off, Shi Wangui still found it hard to believe. The changing scenery outside the window brought her back to her senses. Yes, they had truly fulfilled the promise they made long ago.
They might live without a fixed home and encounter many troubles. They might argue one day, but they would always reconcile. They would face every challenge a couple faces, but they would solve them together.
The scenery outside was different, but their feelings would never change.
Just as Shi Wangui once said: “My thoughts toward you are no longer pure. Once started, there is no turning back.”
And as Wen Youren responded: “Under any circumstances, losing to Shi Wangui is voluntary, a true and willing surrender.”
