Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 62
Initially, Shi Wangui had imagined their reunion would be like a clash between mortal enemies. But after Wen Youren’s sudden confession, she was stunned. She suppressed the urge to lash out and said coldly, “I need to eat and rest. Don’t disturb me.”
“I’ve just transferred to City A,” Wen Youren replied softly. “I don’t have a place to stay yet.”
Here it was again. That look. Shi Wangui remembered it vividly—Wen Youren used to have that exact expression back in the countryside. Five years later, it hadn’t changed a bit.
She was supposed to hate her. She should hate her.
Bitterness surged in Shi Wangui’s heart. She hated the departure without a goodbye, the perceived betrayal, the sudden coldness. But ultimately, she sighed. “This house is yours, and my aunt sent you to look after me. To the world, we are family now. I don’t care if you stay here or anywhere else. But you and I—there is no past, and there will be no future.”
Wen Youren stood across from her. The sunlight caught her amber eyes, which seemed to shimmer with unshed tears. She looked like a delicately painted portrait, a sight that naturally tugged at one’s heartstrings. “Do you truly have no feelings left for me at all?”
The words caught in Shi Wangui’s throat. She turned her back. “None.”
Wen Youren’s hair had grown long, though in five years it hadn’t quite reached her waist. “Then rest early. I’m heading to work. I’ll arrange for you to start at the company tomorrow.”
“Fine.” Shi Wangui didn’t try to make her stay. But as Wen Youren reached the door, Shi Wangui called out, “Wait.”
Wen Youren stopped. Shi Wangui tossed the key to the guest room to her. “I’m not so petty that I’d bar the owner from her own house.” Then, without waiting for a response, she locked her bedroom door.
Once she confirmed the door was shut, Shi Wangui collapsed onto the floor, her shoulders shaking as she sobbed. She had expected them to be strangers or passersby, never imagining that Wen Youren would claim she still loved her.
Was this intentional? Was she playing with her? Did she think Shi Wangui was that desperate for affection? After a breakup followed by five years of silence without a single explanation? Shi Wangui had once told herself that if Wen Youren had offered even the flimsiest explanation, she would have believed it. But no explanation ever came.
Her stomach growled. Shi Wangui walked to the table and opened the takeout Sun Yi had ordered.
Her heart skipped a beat. Inside was a box of egg-fried rice, still warm. With one bite, she knew. This wasn’t takeout; it was made by Wen Youren.
Ironically, Shi Wangui had learned how to make egg-fried rice herself over the years. And her version tasted better.
The next morning, Shi Wangui was woken by the doorbell. It was the same woman from yesterday.
“Hello, Miss Shi. I am Sun Ran. General Manager Wen sent me to pick you up. She said everything is arranged according to your request.”
Shi Wangui rubbed her eyes. “Give me the address. I’m still struggling with jet lag and I’m exhausted. I’ll head over myself later.”
Sun Ran looked hesitant. Her boss’s instructions were to bring Shi Wangui personally. If anything went wrong, she couldn’t take the responsibility. However, the girl in front of her was supposedly the boss’s younger sister. Disobeying her seemed equally risky.
Seeing her hesitation, Shi Wangui added kindly, “Don’t worry about what General Manager Wen says. I’ll call her, or you can tell her yourself when you get to the office. I need to rest. I’ll head in this afternoon.”
She had instinctively said she would call Wen Youren, before remembering she had blocked her number years ago.
“Alright, Miss Shi,” Sun Ran said. “Shall we add each other on WeChat? I’ll send you the address, and you can let me know when you’re ready to leave so I can pick you up.”
Shi Wangui took out her phone. “Sure.”
After Sun Ran left, Shi Wangui crawled back into bed. Jet lag was brutal; she had been as energetic as a cat in the middle of the night and was now as tired as a dog in the morning.
As she closed her eyes, she worried that Wen Youren might take her frustration out on Sun Ran if she didn’t explain. Despite how Wen Youren used to be, who knew what she was like now?
She tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Finally, she decided she had to protect Sun Ran’s job.
It had been so long since she had blocked someone that she forgot how to find the list. After fumbling through the settings, she found the contact she had blocked five years ago: Wen Youren.
The only reason she hadn’t deleted the contact was to prevent Wen Youren from constantly sending new friend requests.
Wen Youren’s profile was the same as before—nothing on her moments. But her avatar had changed to the silhouette of a small cat. Based on what Shi Wangui knew, Wen Youren had been helping Shi Qin since her freshman year and was now a respected “General Manager Wen.” The cute cat avatar felt out of place.
Shi Wangui stared at the avatar for a long time, hesitant to send a message. Eventually, she fell back asleep, forgetting to move the contact back to the block list.
When she woke up at noon, she found a message from Wen Youren: “Good morning.”
“…”
Shi Wangui: ?
Wen Youren: Sun Ran said you wanted to sleep in. I figured you’d be awake by now.
Shi Wangui: How did you even know I unblocked you?
Shi Wangui immediately regretted the text. If Wen Youren hadn’t even realized she was blocked, she had just embarrassed herself. But it was too late to unsend; Wen Youren had already seen it.
Wen Youren: I guessed.
This made Shi Wangui even angrier. She felt like Wen Youren was playing with her, treating her like a three-year-old who could be pacified with a few words.
Shi Wangui: I’m going to the office. Come pick me up personally. I don’t want Sun Ran; I want you.
The company belonged to Shi Qin. As much as she loathed him, her aunt was right: part of this company belonged to her mother. Rather than leaving it all to Shi Yun’en, she should take her share. She needed to take the first step and see the situation for herself.
Wen Youren: Okay.
She agreed? She should agree.
Shi Wangui didn’t know when she would arrive, but looking at her baggy pajamas and the slight dark circles under her eyes, she decided to put on some makeup.
An hour later, Shi Wangui was ready. If there was one thing she had perfected abroad, it was her speed at getting ready.
She sat by the window. Her room had a great view of the yard. By spring, the fragrance of the flowers would be wonderful. But where was Wen Youren?
The woman had no sense of time. How did she even become a General Manager? She claimed to hate Wen Yiyue, yet she was reaping the benefits Wen Yiyue provided.
Wait, a car just pulled up.
Shi Wangui opened the window and leaned out to see. Wen Youren appeared in the yard.
…Why did Wen Youren have such a different aura now that she was working? A white T-shirt, a black vest, a matching tie. The buttons at her waist were partially visible. It was a look that invited… certain thoughts.
“Why aren’t you coming in?” Shi Wangui called out.
“I was afraid you were in the shower or hadn’t finished dressing,” Wen Youren replied.
Shi Wangui slammed the window shut. She stomped down to the car and sat in the passenger seat, not saying a word.
Wen Youren pulled a lunch box from the back. “I grabbed some lunch from the cafeteria for you. I was in a meeting when you messaged, so I didn’t have time to go out and get something better. If you don’t like it, I’ll take you out once we get to the office.”
Shi Wangui wanted to refuse to show her displeasure, but she was genuinely starving. She hadn’t eaten breakfast or lunch. She took the box without looking at Wen Youren and began to eat in silence.
Wen Youren drove slowly. By the time they reached the office, Shi Wangui had finished. “I’ll take you to HR.”
“Mhm.”
Wait.
“What job did you arrange for me?” Shi Wangui asked. She realized she hadn’t told Wen Youren what position she wanted or even what her major was. Besides, there probably wasn’t a role for her specific major in this company.
“My secretary,” Wen Youren said.
“…” Shi Wangui was speechless. “And if I say I won’t do it?”
“We don’t have many openings right now. Serve as my assistant for a short while, and I’ll transfer you later.”
Shi Wangui knew this branch was new. Her aunt told her Wen Youren had handled the setup herself, while Shi Qin managed things back home. She didn’t know where their relationship stood; perhaps she was the outsider now.
“Fine. Transfer me within a week.”
“Okay. Let’s get you processed through HR.”
Shi Wangui followed her into the office. It wasn’t massive, but because it was backed by a large corporation, the benefits were excellent, and many employees were from University A. The atmosphere was pleasant; people chatted when they weren’t busy, and the management didn’t seem overbearing.
At the HR department, Wen Youren spoke directly: “Process her. Her position is my secretary.”
Since the morning meeting wasn’t over, Wen Youren didn’t linger. She told Shi Wangui, “I’ll be finished soon. I’ll come find you and take you to dinner tonight.”
Shi Wangui refused. “No. I’m meeting Sun Yi.”
Wen Youren didn’t accept the refusal. “Sun Yi is busy.”
“…” Shi Wangui snapped, “How do you know she’s busy?”
Wen Youren raised her hand as if to say something but lowered it. “I have to get back. I’ll find you when I’m done.”
The HR representative hadn’t said a word while they were talking, but as soon as Wen Youren left, she leaned in for gossip. “Is your relationship with General Manager Wen, unusual?”
Shi Wangui thought for a moment. “Strangers with some emotional baggage.”
The HR rep was stunned. Maybe former best friends who had a falling out?
“I’m Zhang Chenxi,” the rep said. “I’ll help you with the paperwork. General Manager Wen has never hired an assistant before, so your office space will be shared with hers for now.”
Shi Wangui frowned. “Is there nowhere else? I’m not picky; I just need a chair.”
Zhang Chenxi couldn’t help; she was just an employee. “I’m sorry, Miss Shi. This was General Manager Wen’s arrangement.”
Unable to resist more gossip, she whispered, “Maybe the General Manager is trying to make up with you?”
