Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 42
The air suddenly went still, leaving only the rhythmic creaking of the Ferris wheel. Wang Hu froze with a grilled sausage still in his mouth, and Sun Yi stopped mid-sip of her milk tea. Both of them were paralyzed by what they had just heard.
After a long pause, Sun Yi asked, “Is this ‘together’ the kind of ‘together’ I think it is?”
Shi Wangui replied, “I don’t know if your ‘together’ means the same as my ‘together,’ but I suspect you’re right.”
Wang Hu interjected, “What kind of riddles are you two playing? What ‘together’ this and ‘together’ that? What are you talking about?”
Wen Youren smiled. “A-Wan means that we are dating.”
This time, the silence was absolute. Moments ago, they might have wondered if being “together” meant living together or becoming family; now, it was pure shock.
Seeing Sun Yi’s expression turn to stone, Shi Wangui waved a hand in front of her face. Is the news really that shocking? she wondered. I’ve discussed the topic of same-sex relationships with Sun Yi before. Was I not obvious enough?
Being shaken by Shi Wangui finally brought Sun Yi back to her senses. “Wanwan, when you told me last night that you had a secret to tell, was it this?”
“Yes, this is it,” Shi Wangui nodded. Then she remembered something. “By the way, you said you had a secret too. What is it?”
Sun Yi regretted it instantly. This was a total backfire. How did the spotlight turn back to her? Still, a promise was a promise. “I broke up with Xu Qingnan. Actually, we broke up a while ago, but you blacked out that night and forgot.”
“…”
Shi Wangui remembered now. There had been so much going on that night. She hadn’t just flirted with Wen Youren; she had also jump-started her own love life.
“I see.”
Wang Hu groaned, “No, seriously, how do you two keep getting more explosive? I feel like my brain can’t keep up.”
Shi Wangui retorted, “What is there to keep up with? Just listen and accept it.”
Wen Youren stayed quiet, but she was happy. She was relieved that her two friends didn’t mock them or distance themselves. Everyone seemed to take it in stride.
“You two are something else, keeping it within the group,” Sun Yi teased, nudging Shi Wangui. “You have no idea how many guys have been asking me for your contact info lately. Girls, too. I didn’t give it to anyone, though.”
Sun Yi knew her best friend didn’t care much for boys; she found high school boys annoying. It had been obvious since middle school when a boy accidentally touched her cup and got a earful for it. Since then, no one dared to approach her.
“Oh! Girls! So those girls hanging around the back door every day weren’t there for Wen Youren, were they?” Shi Wangui made a playful face, then pressed her forehead against Wen Youren’s to show her mock jealousy.
Wen Youren couldn’t help but laugh. “Maybe they were just standing there for fun. I haven’t received a single confession.”
“You want to receive one?”
“No, definitely not.”
“From today on, grow your hair out for me. We’ll do it together!”
“Okay.”
Sun Yi couldn’t take it anymore. “Stop the public display of affection! There are two single dogs here!”
Wang Hu echoed, “Exactly!”
Shi Wangui suddenly remembered, “Wait, Wang Hu, weren’t you chasing a girl? You didn’t get her?”
“Hahaha!” Sun Yi laughed. “He got rejected!”
As the Ferris wheel reached the bottom, their conversation ended. To their surprise, Jiang An’an was still there waiting. She called Wen Youren over for a moment.
Sun Yi whispered, “I feel like something is wrong with that girl. She looks like she’s here to steal your partner.”
Before, Sun Yi just thought they didn’t get along. Now that she knew about the relationship, she was certain.
Shi Wangui gritted her teeth, her veins popping on her hands as she gripped her clothes. She wanted to march up and throw a punch to make the girl stay away from her partner. “She absolutely is!”
Wang Hu suggested, “I get it. This is where you should step forward with us behind you and act out a scene of beating up the wicked female lead.”
Sun Yi looked at him with disdain. “Where on earth do you read these novels?”
Wang Hu: “In my sister’s bookshelf.”
Shi Wangui: “You better keep an eye on your sister; she’s only just started middle school.”
“Hahaha!”
Despite the joking, Wang Hu had a point. Shi Wangui led the group over to Wen Youren, but things didn’t go as they expected.
“I specifically came to say goodbye. Sorry for the trouble these past few days,” Jiang An’an said to everyone as they approached.
Wen Youren didn’t quite believe she had suddenly realized her place—after all, it was Jiang An’an who gave that letter to her mother—but she hoped Jiang An’an would truly disappear from her life this time.
“Is she gone?” Shi Wangui asked.
“Mhm,” Wen Youren replied.
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s play!” Shi Wangui laughed.
The sunset painted the sky in vivid colors as the amusement park lights flickered on. The colorful castles glowed before them, and their youth seemed to bloom in that moment. Laughter filled the park as the shadows of the past evaporated.
The school gates closed at 11:00 PM, so they made sure to head back before then. They didn’t take two taxis; since they all lived relatively close to school, they shared a ride and got off at the crossroads.
There was a tree-lined path leading from the crossroads to the school. In winter, most of the leaves had fallen, leaving bare branches that cast ink-wash painting shadows under the streetlights.
“A-You, stand in front,” Shi Wangui suddenly said, raising her phone. When Wen Youren complied, Shi Wangui snapped a photo of her back.
With a click, Wen Youren turned around. “Are you taking pictures?”
“Hehe,” Shi Wangui put her phone away. “My bow really suits you.”
Wen Youren walked back to her side. “A-Wan, do you want to kiss?”
Shi Wangui froze, her face turning beet red. She looked around frantically. “I…”
“A-Wan doesn’t want to?” Wen Youren asked. “Then let’s go back. I’ll kiss you whenever you’re ready.”
“No!” Shi Wangui blurted out, trying to save the moment. “What I mean is…”
“Next time you want to kiss me, you don’t have to ask. If you ask, my answer will always be yes. So you can skip that step.”
Wen Youren laughed, her eyes curving into crescents. She leaned down slowly, drawing closer. Their noses touched first, then they shared a glance before their lips met softly. After a few seconds, Wen Youren stood up straight and pulled Shi Wangui into a hug.
Shi Wangui thought back to the lab. She placed her hand over Wen Youren’s heart. Thump, thump. It was beating fast. Her own was racing too.
Savoring the feeling, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed her again. They closed their eyes under the streetlights, lost in the moment.
“You… your lips are so sweet,” Shi Wangui said shyly. Wen Youren’s breath had a faint fruity scent. For a second, she wanted to nibble, but she didn’t know how, so she just pressed her lips there, letting her heart beat wildly.
Wen Youren took a candy from her pocket, unwrapped it, and popped it into Shi Wangui’s mouth. “Ice cream flavored milk candy. I know you like them, so I prepared a lot.”
The milky sweetness exploded in her mouth, but it wasn’t as sweet as the kiss.
Shi Wangui praised her, “So thoughtful.”
Wen Youren stroked her hair. “You taught me.”
“Right, I taught you.”
The winter night was cold. A gust of wind blew past, making Shi Wangui shiver and hug Wen Youren tighter. Wen Youren unzipped her coat and wrapped it around Shi Wangui. “Still cold?”
Shi Wangui shook her head against her chest. “Not anymore.”
It was 10:30 PM. The gate was only ten minutes away, but Shi Wangui didn’t want to go back yet. “Can we stay like this a bit longer?”
“Sure. As long as you want.”
“If you say that, I might want to stay all night.”
Wen Youren chuckled. “Then we’ll stay all night.”
“Hehe,” Shi Wangui laughed too. “I don’t want to go back to school, and I don’t want to go home. My favorite time was those two months with you in the countryside.”
Wen Youren rubbed her back. She felt the same; those two months, especially after they began expressing their feelings, were her favorite. “Me too.”
“Will we go back later?” Shi Wangui murmured.
“We will,” Wen Youren said firmly. That house was left to her by her father. Wen Yiyue couldn’t stand life there and wouldn’t want it. “We definitely will.”
“That’s good.”
After a while, realizing they might be late and end up locked out, Shi Wangui zipped Wen Youren’s coat back up. “Back to our dorm!”
“Okay.”
They walked hand-in-hand under the streetlights. The lights flickered, but whenever they stood directly beneath one, it shone brilliantly. They made it through the school gates just in time, but as soon as they entered, Sun Yi’s phone call came through.
Shi Wangui answered. “Hello? Are you home?”
Sun Yi’s voice was frantic. “Have you seen the school forum? That Jiang An’an posted a photo of you and Wen Youren!”
Wen Youren immediately pulled out her phone. The moment she opened the forum, the mental strength she had worked so hard to build crumbled. Jiang An’an had lied. She had posted the photo of them kissing, along with their class, names, and phone numbers.
Shi Wangui moved from shock to protective comfort. “It’s fine. Ignore her. So what if they see it? If they have the guts, they can come fight me.”
She wasn’t someone to be messed with, and neither was Wen Youren. But there was one thing she hadn’t anticipated: Wen Youren’s biggest fear was Shi Wangui being the target of people’s whispers.
