Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 31
By 12:30, Wen Youren had nearly finished cooking. Appetizing aromas wafted from the kitchen from time to time. The souls of the three students had long since drifted away from their books. Though Teacher Wang had not finished her explanation, they did not dare move without her permission. However, the teacher was hungry too. As the scent grew stronger, she dropped her book on the table and said, “Time to eat.”
Shi Wangui raised her hands joyfully. “Yay!”
Wen Youren had prepared tomato and scrambled eggs, stir-fried pork, cola chicken wings, and a dish of minced pork with eggplant. She used half a bottle of cola for the wings and poured the rest into a disposable cup. When Shi Wangui came in to help carry the dishes, Wen Youren handed it to her. “Don’t you love cola? There happened to be a little left.”
Shi Wangui had not had a drop of water since arriving at Teacher Wang’s house. She took the cup and gulped it down. After finishing, she said, “I was just getting thirsty.”
“What are you drinking? I want some too!” Wang Hu asked as soon as he entered.
Wen Youren placed five bottles of apple juice in his hands. “Teacher Wang only allows this brand of juice. Do not drink anything else, and definitely do not bring other drinks here.”
Wang Hu found it strange but replied, “Okay.”
Teacher Wang was health-conscious and disliked giving children carbonated drinks or street snacks. If it were not for the fact that the recipe required it, Wen Youren would not have dared to buy the cola.
Sun Yi had already set the table outside. Seeing that the three in the kitchen had not emerged, she poked her head in. “Why are you not out yet?”
Shi Wangui’s face flushed. “Coming, coming.”
Once everyone was seated, Teacher Wang began her pre-meal lecture. “Your foundations are so poor right now that you must not tell anyone you are my students. Only when I have taught you to a level I am satisfied with can you tell the world you were once my pupils. Also, I have prepared a set of test papers for each of you to take home tonight. No copying. I will be able to tell at a glance if you wrote it yourself. Do you hear me?”
“We hear you,” everyone replied in unison.
Clutching his phone, Wang Hu asked, “Teacher, how much is the tutoring fee?”
He had called his parents during the morning break to tell them about Teacher Wang. His parents insisted he ask about the cost so they could pay her, but Wen Youren had said the teacher did not take money. He did not dare disobey his parents, though.
Teacher Wang sighed. “I view you all as my own children. Why would I take money? If your parents ask, tell them that if they try to pay, you should not come back.”
Having known Teacher Wang for a long time, Wen Youren knew that a sigh was a precursor to anger. She chimed in, “Teacher, let’s eat. Try the minced pork eggplant I made; it is the recipe you taught me.”
Teacher Wang smiled, took a bite, closed her eyes, and savored it. “Not bad, not bad at all. You have officially graduated from my kitchen.”
Wen Youren placed a chicken wing in Shi Wangui’s bowl and whispered, “Did you not say you liked these?”
Wang Hu quickly joined in with the flattery. “Teacher, you are so great. We love you so much!”
Seeing the others speak up, Shi Wangui and Sun Yi followed suit. “Yes, yes, us too!”
Everyone enjoyed the meal. Wen Youren’s cooking was so good that Sun Yi and the others wondered if she had made hot pot the night before on purpose just to be lazy. Little did they know that because Shi Wangui was used to Wen Youren’s home cooking, she had wanted a change of pace, which is why they chose hot pot.
After lunch came the inevitable nap. Teacher Wang’s apartment had three bedrooms. Even though they were friends, she would not let Wang Hu sleep in the same room as the girls. She gave the largest room to the three girls and sent Wang Hu to the smallest one.
Shi Wangui lay in the middle. She felt strange today; she really liked Teacher Wang. The woman did not act like a typical teacher but more like family, scolding when necessary and praising when earned. She was the second teacher Shi Wangui had truly liked, besides her homeroom teacher.
Sun Yi had stayed up late the night before and woken up early. After a whole morning of high-intensity math, her brain was tired. She fell asleep almost as soon as she lay down.
“Not sleeping?” Wen Youren whispered close to Shi Wangui’s ear.
A wave of tingles washed over Shi Wangui, making her body feel soft. She rubbed her ear and mimicked Wen Youren’s low voice. “Not tired!”
Her position was a bit awkward. To whisper in someone’s ear, she had to turn on her side. Because she was petite and Wen Youren had a larger frame, it looked as though she were lying in Wen Youren’s arms.
Wen Youren did not miss the opportunity. She reached out and pulled her close. Shi Wangui tucked her head down as Wen Youren said, “Go to sleep. We have English this afternoon. If you do not sleep now, you will definitely pass out in class.”
Shi Wangui was silent. English was tedious; for her, that was a very real possibility.
Although it was not the first time she had shared a bed with Wen Youren, it was the first time they had slept holding each other with someone else in the room. Moreover, what was their status now? Were they a girl-girl couple?
But Wen Youren had said they should start as friends. Is she looking down on me? I already said I would take responsibility! And if she looks down on me, why did she let me touch her last night? Honestly! So annoying!
Amidst her racing thoughts, Shi Wangui eventually drifted off.
In the afternoon, Teacher Wang woke them up one by one. After a full afternoon of English, Sun Yi and Shi Wangui felt like they had learned a month’s worth of material in a single day. The evening bus back to the village ran on a strict schedule, so they would not have time for dinner. At five o’clock, they packed their things and followed Wen Youren home.
“This teacher is great, way better than the tutors my parents found,” Wang Hu said happily. He truly felt he had learned a lot.
Sun Yi sighed. “So tired.” Lately, she had spent all her free time hanging out with her boyfriend, or rather, her ex-boyfriend. She usually spent class time chatting; she had never experienced such high-intensity study before.
“Wait, Wanwan,” Sun Yi suddenly remembered something. “Did you really manage to get such high scores just by guessing based on one logic point?”
It was too ridiculous.
“You forgot, Shi Wangui’s middle school grades were excellent. She just stopped trying later on. She did not study for a whole year in ninth grade and still got a high score to get into this school. That is why the homeroom teacher is always so frustrated with her,” Wang Hu added.
The homeroom teacher had a love-hate relationship with Shi Wangui, upset that such a bright talent had given up, wondering if the school had done something wrong.
Shi Wangui said, “Stop talking about that.”
The atmosphere felt strangely awkward.
Wen Youren said, “Walk faster. There is a bus at 5:30. It is already 5:25.”
They were still some distance from the station. No one wanted to wait for the final bus, so they quickened their pace. With time running out, they eventually had to hold hands and sprint to catch it.
Once on the bus, Shi Wangui and Wen Youren sat in the back. Shi Wangui leaned against the window. It was getting dark, the trees were mostly bare, and there was not much scenery to see.
“Why did you bring us here for tutoring?” Shi Wangui asked. She did not think it was her idea, and even if it was, why bring Sun Yi and Wang Hu?
“I just felt like you and Sun Yi are the type who do not listen and do not realize what you should be doing at your age. You have a good relationship and do everything together. Since you are both in a key high school, and it is not like your grades were ever terrible, you should study hard now.”
“As for Wang Hu, he was honestly just a tag-along.”
Wen Youren spoke these words calmly in her cool, clear voice.
“I still think it is weird,” Shi Wangui muttered. “And you still have not given the real reason.”
“Teacher Wang is a great teacher. If you follow her, you will definitely get great results. As for the reason, it is just that as your older sister, I want to lead you to study hard and make progress every day. There is no other motive.”
“Who is your younger sister?”
Shi Wangui looked at Sun Yi and Wang Hu sitting in front of them. Being with friends was always happy. “Then why are we not going back to school?”
Since they were tutoring and studying at home anyway, and Wen Youren seemed fine, there did not seem to be a reason to stay away from school.
Wen Youren remained silent for a moment, then spoke slowly in the dim light of the bus. “If you want to go back, then go back.”
“Then let’s go back together?” Shi Wangui suggested.
“Yes,” Wen Youren responded softly.
A moment later, she added, “You go back. I am not going back. I will wait for you to come visit every weekend.”
“Why?”
“I cannot go back,” Wen Youren murmured. “When you go back, study hard. Do not do things that hurt yourself just to spite Shi Qin. I know you want to get out early and support yourself. Just keep studying. I will support you.”
Shi Wangui was stunned, her heart racing. She would support her?
“If you are not going back, I am not going back either,” Shi Wangui said, turning her head to look out the window.
Wen Youren was touched, but she did not want to go against the girl’s true wishes. “If you want to go back, just go. It is fine. I have been forcing you to stay here anyway.”
“It is not about being forced. I might actually learn better following you around,” Shi Wangui said quietly.
She did want to go back, but she wanted to go back with Wen Youren. If she had to go alone, there was no point.
Wen Youren took Shi Wangui’s hand and smiled. “Study hard and get into a top university. I will take care of you. After all, I am your sister.”
With their fingers intertwined, Shi Wangui’s palm began to sweat. Her fingers brushed over the back of Wen Youren’s hand. The horrific scabs were gone, replaced by pink scars that wound around like a dragon. She stroked them gently, her voice trembling slightly.
“Okay.”
Wen Youren seemed to mean they were sisters, but Shi Wangui had said she would take responsibility for last night. She could not figure out what Wen Youren was thinking. The person who told her to kiss her was Wen Youren, and the person who took the initiative to kiss her was also Wen Youren. She was truly unpredictable.
“But I am still going to take responsibility for last night,” Shi Wangui added.
There was no other reason; she was a person of her word. Even if she was a bit rowdy sometimes, she would not do someone wrong.
