Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 26
The next morning, Shi Wangui was awakened by the sound of conversation in the courtyard. She rolled over and noticed that Wen Youren was no longer in bed. She reached out and touched the spot where Wen Youren had slept, it still held a trace of warmth, suggesting she had gotten up not long ago.
Where had she gone? And who was speaking in the courtyard?
Shi Wangui got out of bed as well. Her pajamas were the thin autumn kind, and as soon as she left the warm covers, the chill seeped through the fabric and into her body, making her shiver involuntarily.
So cold! It seemed she needed to switch to thicker pajamas.
The weather was so unreasonable, it turned cold without warning.
Shivering, Shi Wangui made her way to the courtyard. As soon as she arrived, she saw Jiang An’an crying, her face streaked with tears. Despite the cold, she wore a pure white dress, over which a black jacket likely Wen Youren’s had been draped. Wen Youren stood opposite her, wearing only a short-sleeved shirt. Both of them seemed like lunatics, completely unbothered by the cold.
“Sister You, you weren’t like this before, you!” Jiang An’an tried to continue, but then she noticed Shi Wangui standing at the doorway.
The air suddenly fell silent.
Shi Wangui yawned. Just a moment ago, they were making so much noise while she was trying to sleep, and now they were both quiet?
“You should go back now. You know things have changed. Many years have passed, and people have grown older,” Wen Youren said before turning and walking toward Shi Wangui.
“Is it because of her?” Jiang An’an suddenly erupted, pointing hysterically at Shi Wangui.
Shi Wangui, who had been an observer and suddenly found herself at the center of the drama: ?
“No,” Wen Youren replied as she reached Shi Wangui, grabbing her arm and preparing to lead her inside.
“I don’t believe you,” Jiang An’an insisted.
“Believe what you want,” Wen Youren said without letting go. Shi Wangui was confused, but as Wen Youren tugged at her arm, she spun around and was pulled inside.
Just as Wen Youren was about to disappear from Jiang An’an’s sight, the latter suddenly shouted, “Does she know you’re a lesbian? Does she know you’re a freak?”
Wen Youren used her leg to shut the door, her hand covering Shi Wangui’s ear trembling slightly. The voice had been too loud there was no way Shi Wangui hadn’t heard.
Shi Wangui had indeed heard, but what struck her more was the shock. She suddenly recalled the story of the two girls she had seen in the auditorium last time. It turned out that the stories in books could be closer to her reality than she had ever imagined.
And was Wen Youren really attracted to women? Was it true? She had never noticed before. Wen Youren usually seemed like a bookworm, and there had been no signs of it.
Wen Youren slowly lowered her hand, letting it fall by her side, and said softly, “If you want to leave, you can go back. I’ll be fine here alone.” Then, hearing no sound from outside, she opened the door again, allowing sunlight to flood the living room. “If it bothers you.”
Shi Wangui remained silent, her eyes fixed on Wen Youren. Finally, she asked, “Why?” She glanced toward the courtyard Jiang An’an was indeed gone. “Why would it bother me? What is there to be bothered about? That you like women? Isn’t that perfectly normal?”
The air grew still once more.
Wen Youren knew, of course, that Shi Wangui wouldn’t be bothered by that. But it wasn’t about her attraction to women, it was about her feelings for Shi Wangui.
Autumn is often a season of farewells, but they met in autumn. Perhaps she had initially taken care of her like a younger sister, but that night, the night at the hospital her feelings seemed to have shifted.
“It’s nothing,” Wen Youren shook her head. “Anything is fine.”
Shi Wangui felt baffled, though this wasn’t the first time. She had always thought that bookworms like Wen Youren had a different way of thinking, but her luck in romance was surprisingly good. That Jiang An’an clearly had a crush on her.
She wanted to ask Wen Youren if she liked Jiang An’an.
But she didn’t dare.
Forget it, she definitely didn’t like her, otherwise she wouldn’t have closed the door.
A chilly breeze swept by, and Shi Wangui shivered all over again. She noticed Wen Youren’s arms had already turned red from the cold, yet she stood motionless in the wind like a stone statue.
Shi Wangui touched Wen Youren’s arm it had long lost any warmth and felt no different from touching ice. “Aren’t you cold? Don’t catch a cold and make me take care of you. If that happens, I won’t care whether you live or die.”
Wen Youren smiled. “Okay.” She didn’t feel cold, but looking at Shi Wangui, who kept shivering, who was really the one feeling the chill?
They went back to change into warmer clothes, and only then did Shi Wangui realize she hadn’t brought any thick pajamas. But the weather had turned cold, and she didn’t know if Shi Qin would be home if she went back.
Go home or buy new ones?
No, neither option.
Wear Wen Youren’s.
Yes.
“Do you have any extra thick pajamas?” Shi Wangui asked.
“Yes,” Wen Youren opened the closet, then glanced at Shi Wangui standing nearby. “But, wouldn’t they be too big for you? How about we go to town tomorrow to buy you a set?”
Shi Wangui: “…”
“I have no money!”
Ridiculous the money in her hands was her lifeline. She wouldn’t be an adult for over two more years, so she avoided spending her savings whenever possible.
Wen Youren sighed. “How could I make you pay? I’ll buy them for you.”
“Then I want two sets,” Shi Wangui said.
“Okay,” Wen Youren agreed.
So, at noon, they decided to go to town for a meal! After all, there wasn’t much food at home. At the time, Shi Wangui thought she couldn’t let an injured person who hadn’t fully recovered cook, but now it seemed Wen Youren’s hand only looked scary, it didn’t hurt anymore and didn’t affect her daily life.
After all, she had done homework for hours yesterday.
Getting to town was simple. There was a dedicated bus at the village entrance with scheduled times, so they wouldn’t have to wait long. Shi Wangui stood at the village entrance, her eyes fixed on the persimmon tree stretching out from the courtyard. The bright red persimmons hung motionless under the white clouds like a unique painting.
Wen Youren looked down at Shi Wangui, who was gazing upward, and knew she was watching the persimmon tree, but still asked, “What are you looking at?”
Without lowering her head, Shi Wangui replied, “The persimmon tree.”
“Is it pretty?”
“Very pretty.”
“Wishing you persimmon-perfect luck.”
“Huh?” Shi Wangui’s gaze shifted from the persimmon tree to Wen Youren’s face.
“Nothing. If you heard it, you heard it. If not, forget it,” Wen Youren said deliberately.
“Tch, suit yourself.” She wasn’t that curious anyway, it definitely wasn’t anything good, and it wasn’t as lovely as the persimmon tree.
“Oh, Xiao You, are you heading to town?” Aunt Wang had arrived at the bus stop at some point. With only two minutes until departure, it seemed she had timed it perfectly.
“Auntie Wang, we’re going to buy some groceries,” Wen Youren said truthfully.
“You silly child, every household in the village has their own fields. You could’ve just come to me directly. How could I not be able to feed two young girls? How do you know if the food outside is clean?” Auntie Wang chattered on endlessly. She had watched Wen Youren grow up and had always been fond of this girl since childhood. She could only say heaven was unfair, treating a young girl so harshly.
Wen Youren didn’t want to take advantage of the villagers. Once or twice was out of affection, but more than that would strain relationships. “It’s alright, Auntie Wang. Wanwan and I will take the opportunity to go out for a stroll too.”
Wanwan? Shi Wangui’s eyes instantly widened.
How dare you call me Wanwan? Don’t think just because we’ve gotten slightly closer recently that you can address me so casually! Even Tang Monk had to go through eighty-one trials to obtain the scriptures. Have we known each other for eighty-one days?
“Who are you calling?”
“The bus is here,” Wen Youren directly cut off Shi Wangui’s words, then grabbed her hand and boarded the bus.
Their village stop wasn’t the starting station, so there were already quite a few people on board when they got on. Plus, it was Sunday, and some students liked to eat near their schools at noon before returning in the afternoon to finish homework. By the time they boarded, there were hardly any seats left, and naturally the elderly had taken them first.
So in the end, only the two of them were left standing.
Shi Wangui hugged the vertical pole there was no helping it. The handrails were a bit too high. It wasn’t that she couldn’t reach them, but the ride to town would take nearly twenty minutes, and keeping her arm stretched up to hold the rail would be tiring.
Wen Youren stood beside Shi Wangui. Being taller, she didn’t hold the pole but grasped the overhead handrail instead.
Shi Wangui: “…”
Just because you’re a few centimeters taller than me? Anyway, no matter how much taller, publicly it can only be described as a few centimeters. Sigh, why wasn’t I born taller? Shi Wangui began pondering various reasons, determined to find an explanation for her height.
Is Shi Qin short? Probably not he’s over 180 cm, right? Mom definitely not Mom. With those long legs of hers, how could that be? Then it must be because I started learning martial arts too young. Yes, that’s definitely it. It can’t be that I was born short.
Shi Wangui firmly believed this reason. Ultimately, any reason would do except being born that way.
“What are you thinking about?” Wen Youren asked, watching Shi Wangui frown, then smile, then roll her eyes, it was somewhat adorable.
“Thinking about how to take you down,” Shi Wangui said fiercely.
Wen Youren lowered her head until her eyes were level with Shi Wangui’s, then suddenly smiled. Her double eyelids curved into crescents, with slight puffiness appearing beneath them. Her dark pupils sparkled like stars. “If I get taken down by you, then I’d gladly admit defeat.”
Shi Wangui: “…”
Why did she suddenly get so close. What does she want? Does she want to fight me? See who’s stronger? What did that mean gladly admit defeat. What’s going on? My face feels a bit warm. The bus must be too hot more people definitely means more body heat.
She awkwardly turned her head away and looked at the scenery outside the window, no longer looking at Wen Youren, thus forgetting her own bold words from moments earlier.
Before long, they arrived at their destination. Though the town wasn’t as bustling as the city, it had all the essentials. It was already noon, and neither of them had eaten, so their first stop was a casual meal at a nearby place.
After finishing their meal, they began their shopping spree. With someone else footing the bill, Shi Wangui indulged freely, stocking up on everything she usually enjoyed eating and items she currently needed for her daily life.
She figured Wen Youren was well-off at least wealthier than she was.
As they continued shopping, they eventually ran out of hands to carry their purchases, forcing them to stop. Laden with bags of all sizes, they headed to the terminal to catch a bus. While they might have skipped the ride if they were empty-handed, carrying so much made it a necessity.
They settled into the back seats of the bus. Shi Wangui found that spot particularly comfortable, occasionally experiencing a slight floating sensation, as if riding a low-altitude pirate ship.
“You’re cooking tonight,” Shi Wangui said.
“Okay.”
“Sing me a song,” she added, immediately regretting the words as soon as they left her mouth. Her mind felt foggy, as if it had momentarily rusted over.
“The sound of the rain,” Wen Youren began to sing, her voice unexpectedly gentle, a contrast to her usual demeanor. “Each drop so clear,” She stopped after just two lines. “That’s all.”
Shi Wangui: “…”
Wen Youren’s singing was actually quite pleasant just far too brief.
