Green Tea Top Student Falls in Love with Me - Chapter 17
During exam periods, there was no morning self-study session. Students just needed to arrive at their assigned exam classrooms before 8 a.m. However, many still came early top students exchanged revision strategies, average students reviewed their books, while those in the last few exam rooms mostly showed up to socialize.
Shi Wangui, perpetually ranked last, was already familiar with the others in her exam room. It made no difference whether she arrived early or late.
As for Wen Youren, this being her first exam, she was assigned to the very last classroom. Knowing no one there, she preferred to sleep a little longer in the dorm.
By the time Shi Wangui’s alarm went off, Wen Youren had already left for the classroom. Shi Wangui was the only one left in the dorm, and the entire hallway was eerily quiet. Then again, she was the only one who didn’t really care about exams.
She arrived at the classroom right on time, but this time, the atmosphere was different. Usually, the room was noisy, and the teachers didn’t bother to discipline them these students neither cheated nor took the exams seriously, so there was no point in intervening.
But today, the classroom was unusually quiet. Shi Wangui looked up and saw their homeroom teacher was the proctor.
And their homeroom teacher was no paper tiger her reputation for strictness was well-known.
“Showing up right on the dot for exams every time next time, don’t be late,” the teacher scolded as she scanned Shi Wangui with the electronic device, unable to hide her irritation.
“Sure, sure, sure.”
Shi Wangui took her seat. Usually, she was the last one in the row, but this time, there was another desk behind hers, which made leaning back quite comfortable. She couldn’t help but wish Wen Youren would always sit behind her.
The first exam was Chinese. Shi Wangui spent less than an hour writing before she laid her head on the desk and fell asleep.
In high school, she hadn’t managed to get familiar with her classmates’ faces, but she’d certainly gotten acquainted with her desk. Whether during exams or regular classes, her face was always pressed against it.
Ten minutes passed.
“Teacher, someone’s sleeping.”
A familiar voice came from an unfamiliar seat in the back. Shi Wangui’s eyes snapped open. Just as the teacher’s high heels clicked off the podium, she lifted her head, picked up her pen, and pretended to study the exam paper intently.
Wen Youren, are you trying to get yourself killed? How did my sleeping bother you? Was it necessary to report me to the teacher? This is just an exam. Just wait until no one’s around, see if I don’t teach you a lesson.
You’d better sleep with one eye open at night, or you might wake up with your mouth sewn shut by a ghost.
Ghost! ghost!
Never mind, better not think about it.
Shi Wangui was terrified of ghosts. She usually didn’t even dare mention them. Since she’d never told anyone about this embarrassing fear, hardly anyone knew.
“Ding ling ling!”
The bell rang, signaling the end of the exam. The teacher walked down the aisles, collecting the papers one by one. Once all were gathered, she announced that students could leave their seats.
“Wen Youren, are you insane?!”
“Shi Wangui, I haven’t left yet,” the homeroom teacher said sharply.
Shi Wangui had been too impatient. The moment she heard they were allowed to leave, without checking if the teacher was still there, she slammed her hand on Wen Youren’s desk and started picking a fight.
Shi Wangui: “…”
“You just wait,” Shi Wangui muttered under her breath.
Wen Youren smiled. She really is just a kid. I thought my little sister was some irredeemable, disrespectful troublemaker, but it turns out she’s just sharp-tongued. Deep down, she’s probably kind-hearted. She can still be guided back onto the right path. I’ll just have to spend more time with her.
The final exam was still proctored by their homeroom teacher. Shi Wangui was worried Wen Youren might stir up trouble again, so she didn’t sleep, but she didn’t work on the test either she just stared at the scenery outside the window
Perhaps in such a situation, a single cloud, a leaf, or a drop of water could capture all of Shi Wangui’s attention everything except the exam paper.
Shi Wangui felt someone poking her from behind with a pen. It could only be Wen Youren, so she didn’t want to turn around or respond. She even deliberately shifted forward a little, making it impossible for Wen Youren to reach her.
When she looked out the window again, the sky suddenly darkened. Anyone with common sense would guess it was about to rain, but Shi Wangui had no such sense. She found it eerie, how could the sky darken so suddenly when it wasn’t like that just moments ago?
And Shi Wangui was the type to overthink. In such situations, she’d wonder if it could be supernatural beings, if there really were things in the world invisible to the naked eye, like ghosts.
With that thought, goosebumps immediately appeared on her arms. Even through her jacket, she felt extremely cold. Her heart raced, her breathing quickened, and her gaze grew restless, clear signs of fear.
Why did it feel like nothing good ever happened when Wen Youren was around?
Shi Wangui turned away, no longer looking out the window, hoping to avoid some of her fear.
Still scared.
It would be better if there were more people around, but on the nights of major exams, there was no evening self-study. And there were only two people in her dorm. If Wen Youren went to the classroom to study, wouldn’t she be left all alone? That was absolutely unacceptable!
She should just skip school.
Shi Wangui made a decision for herself.
The exam ended, and she prepared to make a run for it.
“Students, wait a moment. The school has an announcement. Since there’s no evening self-study today and tomorrow is a holiday, the school will not allow students to enter after 7 p.m. Please remember to go home early. As for boarding students, don’t even think about sneaking out to play. If you go home, your family must call to confirm. There will be dorm checks tonight, though the exact time is unknown to the teachers.” After collecting the exam papers, the homeroom teacher stood at the podium, relaying the instructions from the school administration.
Shi Wangui: “…”
I’m skipping anyway! What are they going to do, expel me?
“If any boarding student is found missing during the dorm check, we will have their parents take them home for disciplinary action for a period of time,” the homeroom teacher added.
“Class dismissed. See you tomorrow.”
The students began pouring out of the classroom. There were so few boarding students in the first year that, for the day students, no evening self-study meant a moment of freedom staying even a minute longer in school would be a disservice to their souls.
“Hey.” Shi Wangui turned around and rubbed her nose. “Why were you poking me during the exam?”
“Something up?” Wen Youren smiled.
Shi Wangui bristled like a startled puppy. “Wasn’t it you poking me?”
“Your stuff fell,” Wen Youren said. “So, what did you want to talk to me about now?”
Shi Wangui: “…”
“Are you going back to the dorm later?”
“I have something to do later,” Wen Youren replied, picking up her stationery and standing up. “If you have something to say, you can tell me now.”
Shi Wangui’s eyes dimmed slightly. She didn’t want Wen Youren to think she was begging her to return to the dormitory. She had to stick to materialism ghosts didn’t exist in this world, and what she had imagined earlier was just a figment of her imagination. “It’s nothing. I’m leaving now, so don’t block the way.” She then hurried over to Sun Yi in the neighboring class and asked, “What are your plans for tonight?”
The moment the words left her mouth, she regretted it. Sun Yi was a day student and couldn’t stay at school for too long. Moreover, if she brought Sun Yi back to the dormitory, she’d have to escort her out later, which would amount to the same problem.
“Nothing at the moment, why?” Sun Yi linked arms with Shi Wangui.
Shi Wangui quickly changed her mind. “Let’s go grab dinner at the entrance.”
“Sure thing,” Sun Yi replied.
When they arrived at the food stall, Sun Yi spotted a familiar face. “Wanwan, isn’t that Wen Youren over there?”
Shi Wangui followed her gaze and saw Wen Youren standing in front of three girls. Wen Youren was carrying a heavily stuffed backpack. Among the three girls, one had long hair, while the other two had short hair. The long-haired girl seemed to be on very good terms with Wen Youren, chatting and laughing with her incessantly.
And that icy-faced block of wood remained as expressionless as ever.
“Probably,” Shi Wangui frowned. “Maybe they’re her former classmates.”
“Speaking of which, I once asked Xu Qingnan if she knew any of Wen Youren’s schoolmates. I even planned to dig into her background, but Xu Qingnan just told me to stay away from her and not provoke her or something,” Sun Yi recalled. Initially, she had genuinely intended to teach Wen Youren a lesson to stand up for her friend, but after Shi Wangui stopped her, she dropped the idea.
“Don’t provoke her.” Shi Wangui murmured to herself. She didn’t know much about this suddenly appearing “sister” or what she was like before. It seemed different from the image she had initially formed in her mind.
“Hey, they’re leaving. Should we go take a look?” Sun Yi suggested, noticing Wen Youren and the others slipping into an alley.
“Okay.”
The two of them trailed the group like thieves, not daring to get too close, so they couldn’t make out what was being said. However, judging by how closely they were huddled together, their relationship seemed quite good.
“Wait.” Shi Wangui pulled Sun Yi back at the corner, letting Wen Youren and the others disappear from sight.
“What’s wrong?” Sun Yi asked.
“Let’s stop following. Let’s go back,” Shi Wangui said.
Wen Youren had seen her. At the turn, she had deliberately glanced back and made a retreating gesture, as if telling Shi Wangui not to follow any further.
“Why?” Sun Yi still didn’t understand. They had followed for so long, and now they were just giving up?
“It’s getting late. I need to head back to school.” Shi Wangui checked the time, it was already 6:30. She wasn’t sure if she could make it to the school gate by 7:00, and she didn’t know if the teachers would really lock the gates after that as they had warned. If she couldn’t get in, her only option would be to climb the wall.
“Alright, see you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow.”
Shi Wangui walked back alone. The sky grew darker, and the streets were nearly empty. With Sun Yi suddenly gone, she genuinely began to feel scared.
Drip, drip!
Shi Wangui twisted the button next to her watch, and the sound stopped.
Whoosh, whoosh!
She put on her earphones, so she could no longer hear the wind.
But it was too dark, and Shi Wangui walked faster and faster. No matter how fast she went, she always felt like someone was following her.
She started letting her imagination run wild. She regretted following him doing bad things always came back to bite you. No, I’m a materialist, a materialist. There can’t possibly be ghosts in this world.
Shi Wangui quickened her pace even more when suddenly, she felt a slap on her arm.
“Ah, get away!”
“What are you afraid of?” Wen Youren grabbed Shi Wangui’s hand and asked curiously, “Ghosts?”
“You’re the ghost!” Shi Wangui snapped after recognizing who it was. “What are you doing here?”
“Returning to school before seven,” Wen Youren said with a laugh. “And you? Were you following me?”
“I’d have to be crazy to follow you.”
“Then do you like me?”
Shi Wangui’s eyes widened abruptly. “You’re insane.”
“Tomorrow’s a holiday. Do you have any plans?” Wen Youren asked.
“None of your business,” Shi Wangui retorted, clearly annoyed.
Of course, she had plans for tomorrow, she needed to visit her mother.
