- Chapter 9 - At Least He Won't Die
The next day, Lan Wangji woke up as usual at the Hour of Mao (5:00 AM).
Looking at Wei Wuxian, who was still sprawled over him in a deep sleep, Lan Wangji gently rolled him over and quietly slipped out of bed.
Yesterday, Wei Wuxian had focused entirely on drinking and had eaten very little. Coupled with how exhausted he had been from the previous night’s activities, Lan Wangji planned to ask to use the inn’s kitchen.
As he passed by the room of Xie Lian and Hua Cheng, Lan Wangji paused for a moment. He was deeply concerned about what Hua Cheng had mentioned yesterday.
Although Wei Wuxian himself claimed there was no issue, Lan Wangji still felt uneasy. He thought about asking Hua Cheng for more details, but felt that knocking on their door so abruptly would be a breach of etiquette.
After standing there for just a moment, Lan Wangji turned and continued toward the kitchen.
By the time Lan Wangji finished preparing breakfast and returned carrying a food box, he was surprised to see Hua Cheng leaning against his own doorframe with his arms crossed, head lowered as he toyed with a curved scimitar.
Lan Wangji walked up to him with the food box, intending to offer a greeting, but Hua Cheng spoke without even looking up.
“Were you looking for me?” Hua Cheng asked.
Lan Wangji was not at all surprised that Hua Cheng knew his intentions; after all, he was a Ghost King.
He cupped his hands in a respectful salute and replied, “Yes.”
Hua Cheng looked up, raised an eyebrow, and remained silent.
Lan Wangji asked, “If Wei Ying continues to use the Stygian Tiger Seal, will he truly…”
Seeing Lan Wangji struggle to voice the word “die,” Hua Cheng said flatly, “He will die.”
A flash of heartache appeared in Lan Wangji’s eyes. He pressed on, “And if he does not use the Stygian Tiger Seal, will his body be out of danger? Does using Chenqing have any effect on him?”
Hua Cheng stowed E-Ming away and said, “At least he won’t die.”
With that, Hua Cheng opened his door and stepped back into his room. It appeared he had been waiting specifically for Lan Wangji.
Even though Hua Cheng had already entered his room, Lan Wangji still faced the closed door and cupped his hands. “Thank you.”
He then carried the food box back to his own room.
Upon entering, Hua Cheng saw Xie Lian sitting on the bed watching him. He walked over, brushed Xie Lian’s hair, and said, “I have done what Gege requested. Might I ask for a reward?”
Xie Lian smiled, cradling Hua Cheng’s face in both hands. “What reward does San Lang want?”
Hua Cheng raised an eyebrow. “Borrow some spiritual power.”
Xie Lian blushed and nodded, taking the initiative to press his lips against Hua Cheng’s.
Lan Wangji entered his room to find Wei Wuxian still asleep. He set the food box gently on the table and sat by the bed, watching the sleeping man.
Based on what Hua Cheng had implied, even if he didn’t use the Stygian Tiger Seal and only used Chenqing, it wouldn’t be fatal, but it would still have some impact on his health. After all, Mo Xuanyu’s body was far too frail.
Lan Wangji looked at Wei Wuxian with heartache, silently vowing to find a way to improve Wei Ying’s physical condition.
Since this body had passed the age for core formation and could no longer develop a Golden Core, he had to find a way to ensure Wei Ying would not be harmed by the influence of Chenqing.
As he was thinking, Wei Wuxian groggily opened his eyes and rubbed them, looking half-asleep. “Lan Zhan… why are you so far away? Come closer.”
Lan Wangji leaned his face in. “Wei Ying.”
Looking at Lan Wangji’s face so close to his own, Wei Wuxian’s hands snapped up to cup Lan Wangji’s cheeks. He planted a hazy kiss on his lips and murmured, “Lan Zhan, you’re so handsome. Your lips are so soft.”
He then sat up, leaned against Lan Wangji, and nuzzled into his chest. Finding a comfortable position, he wrapped his arms around Lan Wangji and fell back asleep.
Lan Wangji held him tightly in return and whispered, “Wei Ying?”
Noticing the person in his arms had no reaction, Lan Wangji looked down. Wei Wuxian had already fallen asleep again with his eyes shut tight.
Afraid of waking him once more, Lan Wangji remained sitting perfectly upright, holding Wei Wuxian in his embrace.
It wasn’t until the Hour of Si (10:00 AM) that Wei Wuxian slowly opened his eyes and stretched. He then realized he had somehow fallen asleep while sitting up.
Not only was he sitting, but Lan Zhan was sitting too.
Wei Wuxian asked in confusion, “Lan Zhan, weren’t we lying down together last night? Why are we sitting and sleeping now?”
Lan Wangji didn’t answer the question. Instead, he stood up, walked to the table, and laid out the breakfast he had prepared.
“Wei Ying, go wash up and eat breakfast,” he said.
Wei Wuxian jumped off the bed and peered at the table, saying excitedly, “Lan Zhan! I can tell just by looking that you made this yourself.”
Lan Wangji nodded. “Mn.”
Wei Wuxian happily kissed Lan Wangji’s cheek again. “Lan Zhan, you’re truly amazing! You do everything so well. As expected of Hanguang-Jun!”
He reached out to grab the chopsticks, but Lan Wangji caught his hand. “Go wash up.”
Wei Wuxian immediately collapsed into Lan Wangji’s arms and whined, “Er-Gege was too powerful last night; I can’t move anymore.”
Without a change in expression, Lan Wangji picked Wei Wuxian up in his arms and carried him over to help him wash up and get dressed.
Once everything was settled, Wei Wuxian finally sat down at the table and began to enjoy his exclusive breakfast.
