- Chapter 7 - Are You Willing to Return with Me?
Xie Lian watched the storyteller on stage, listening to the entire segment with considerable interest, and gained a general understanding of the situation.
He glanced at Wei Wuxian, who was still smiling and drinking as if the story being told on stage had nothing to do with him. Xie Lian could honestly say that even he, in his past, would not have been able to maintain such a level of detachment.
He never expected to encounter someone in this cultivation world who had faced such similar trials to his own. This realization made Xie Lian feel a sense of admiration for Wei Wuxian.
Wei Wuxian finished the Emperor’s Smile in his hand and set the jar on the table. Looking at Lan Wangji, he asked seriously, “Lan Zhan, do you still remember the vow we once made together?”
Lan Wangji turned to look at Wei Wuxian with an equally serious expression. “To help the weak.”
Wei Wuxian added, “And to have a clear conscience.”
Having said that, Wei Wuxian leaned playfully against Lan Wangji again and began drinking the wine the waiter had served. “This wine is truly far inferior. I say, Lan Zhan, do you happen to know the brewing method for Emperor’s Smile?”
Lan Wangji replied, “I do not.”
Wei Wuxian muttered to himself, “Sigh! What a shame. If I have the chance to go back to Gusu again, I must find a way to get my hands on that brewing recipe.”
Lan Wangji gently straightened Wei Wuxian’s body, placed both hands on his shoulders, and said with a solemn face, “Wei Ying, are you willing to return to the Cloud Recesses with me?”
Wei Wuxian looked at Lan Wangji in surprise. “Lan Zhan, if I return to the Cloud Recesses with you, wouldn’t your uncle just faint from pure anger?”
Lan Wangji replied, “He will not.”
Wei Wuxian said, “Lan Zhan, I am still a target for everyone. If I return to the Cloud Recesses with you, it’s not just a matter of your uncle—I’m afraid Hanguang-Jun’s reputation would also be tarnished.”
Lan Wangji simply asked, “Wei Ying, I only ask you: are you willing to return?”
Looking into Lan Wangji’s steadfast eyes, Wei Wuxian drained his cup of wine and laughed. “Of course I am willing. Take me back then, Er-Gege, and hide me away.”
Since Lan Wangji was not afraid and remained so unwavering, why should he, Wei Wuxian, be so hesitant and timid?
No matter the hardships of the world, as long as he could be with Lan Wangji, it was enough.
Lan Wangji nodded. “Good. We depart tomorrow.”
Wei Wuxian asked, “So soon?”
Lan Wangji countered, “We depart today.”
Wei Wuxian hurriedly interjected, “Tomorrow! Let’s make it tomorrow. Lan Zhan, you really are no fun. I wanted to play out here for a few more days, but Er-Gege won’t give me even a single chance.”
Lan Wangji said, “In the future.”
Xie Lian gave a light cough. “Ahem… Young Master Wei, Second Young Master Lan, was the story I just heard from the storyteller true?”
Wei Wuxian turned around with his wine cup, leaning down with his elbows propped on the table. “Well, for the most part, it can be considered the basic facts.”
Xie Lian smiled gently. “For Young Master Wei to stand against all living beings by himself—remaining true to your original heart even when the world abandoned, spat upon, or even wanted to kill you—it is truly rare and commendable. It is deeply admirable.”
Wei Wuxian smiled. “It was merely the arrogance of youth. Daozhang Xie praises me too highly.”
Xie Lian asked, “If you could do it all over again, would Young Master Wei still make the same choice?”
At those words, Wei Wuxian paused mid-drink. If he could do it again, would he make the same choice?
Wei Wuxian had asked himself this question many times in his heart, and every time the answer was almost the same: Yes.
Wei Wuxian set down his cup and turned to look at Lan Wangji. “If I could do it again, I would still save the people who needed saving. However… I might not allow myself to go mad like that again, to lose all hope and be devoured by ten thousand ghosts. Because I don’t want Lan Zhan to have to live through those days ever again.”
“Before, I didn’t know there was anyone in this world who treated me with such sincerity. Now that I know, I certainly won’t choose death so easily.”
Lan Wangji looked at Wei Wuxian, his heart filled with profound emotion. His face, usually an expressionless mask, showed a rare flicker of visible moved sentiment.
Xie Lian said with a smile, “The feelings between you two are as clear as the sun and moon; you will surely stay together happily for a lifetime. Moreover, since you are both righteous men and favored by the heavens, it is truly a blessing for all living beings.”
Wei Wuxian said, “I also hope it is as Daozhang Xie says, and that I can stay with Lan Zhan happily for life. I suppose I can be considered someone who has lived two lives. In my last life, I didn’t recognize my own heart, nor did I realize Lan Zhan’s feelings sooner, which led to so much wasted time.”
“Even if this life still holds a thousand difficulties, I want to stay by Lan Zhan’s side, never to be parted, forever together.”
Lan Wangji tightly grasped Wei Wuxian’s hand and said, “Wei Ying, I feel the same!”
