- Chapter 18 - You Know I Have No Such Intention
After tidying the room, Lan Wangji sat at the desk and began going through the stack of clan affairs he had brought back from the Yashitsu.
Wei Wuxian sat down beside him, watching him work. “Lan Zhan, Zewu-jun is currently plagued by a heart demon; I suppose he has no capacity to look after the clan’s affairs for the time being?”
Lan Wangji looked up. “Mhm. Until Brother overcomes his heart demon, I will help share the burden of the clan’s responsibilities.”
Wei Wuxian smiled. “As you should. Don’t worry about me; I’ll wait for you obediently in the Jingshi.”
“Wei Ying, there is no need for that,” Lan Wangji said. “You may leave the Jingshi.”
Wei Wuxian teased, “If I leave the Jingshi, isn’t Hanguang-jun afraid I’ll break ten sect rules in a single day?”
“As long as you do not leave Cloud Recesses,” Lan Wangji replied.
“And if I want to leave Cloud Recesses?”
Lan Wangji answered seriously: “I will accompany you.”
Wei Wuxian nodded with a grin. “Good.”
When Wei Wuxian first returned via the sacrificial ritual, he hadn’t felt much joy or fortune. But now, he was starting to feel lucky. If he hadn’t returned, he might never have discovered Lan Wangji’s feelings, nor would he have realized his own. In this life, for Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji was his home, his everything.
For Lan Wangji, it was the same. His failure to protect Wei Wuxian in the previous life had been his lifelong regret. Now that Heaven had given him a second chance, he would do everything in his power to keep him safe.
After a long silence, Wei Wuxian asked, “Lan Zhan, did your uncle make things difficult for you today?”
“No.”
“That’s good. I saw him leave looking quite angry.”
“Five days from now,” Lan Wangji noted, “a Discussion Conference at Cloud Recesses.”
Wei Wuxian was surprised, but only for a moment. Currently, among the great clans, the Gusu Lan possessed the most power and the presence of the Twin Jades. It was only natural for the cultivation world to default to Lan leadership. He got up to grab a jar of Emperor’s Smile, took a sip, and said, “It’s for the position of Chief Cultivator, isn’t it?”
“Yes.”
Wei Wuxian smiled. “Zewu-jun is the Clan Leader, but he is in seclusion. That makes you, Hanguang-jun, the most suitable candidate.”
“Wei Ying, you know I have no such intention.”
“I know,” Wei Wuxian said. “But we are often caught in circumstances beyond our control. Lan Zhan, if you become the Chief Cultivator, you will be a great one.”
“I only wish to clear your name and seek justice for you,” Lan Wangji said firmly.
Wei Wuxian walked over and sat directly on Lan Wangji’s lap. He took another swallow of wine and said, “Lan Zhan, actually, whether my name is cleared or not doesn’t matter to me. Whether they fear me or loathe me, it’s all the same. In this life, all I want is to be able to walk by your side.”
Lan Wangji pulled him close. “Wei Ying, I want you to be able to walk by my side openly and rightfully!”
Wei Wuxian turned to look at him, set down the wine jar, and wrapped his arms around Lan Wangji’s neck, kissing him deeply. After they parted, Wei Wuxian smiled. “Alright. I’ll wait for my Lan Er-gege to clear my name.”
“Wei Ying, the Discussion Conference—will you attend with me?”
Wei Wuxian hesitated. “Is it appropriate for me to go? Won’t your uncle be angry?”
“No,” Lan Wangji replied. “Uncle has already authorized it.”
Wei Wuxian’s mouth dropped open in shock. “Your uncle authorized it?!”
Lan Wangji nodded. “Yes.”
Wei Wuxian leaned into Lan Wangji’s chest. “Lan Zhan, I’m not dreaming, am I?”
Lan Wangji leaned down and gave a light bite to Wei Wuxian’s neck. “No.”
Wei Wuxian laughed, touching the spot where he’d been bitten. “Just talk, Er-gege, why the biting? So unrefined! Is this still the Hanguang-jun I know?”
Lan Wangji picked him up and carried him toward the bed. “No.”
