- Chapter 17 - The Newly Invented Talisman
When Lan Wangji returned to the Jingshi, Wei Wuxian was sprawled on the floor, sketching intently.
Hearing the door open, Wei Wuxian looked up with a bright smile. “Lan Zhan, you’re back!” After saying that, he immediately went back to his drawing.
Lan Wangji looked at the floor, which was covered in drafts, leaving him nowhere to step. “Wei Ying, why are you lying on the floor?”
Wei Wuxian gestured for him to come over. “I’ve been sitting for so long, I got tired. Lan Zhan, come here, look at this!”
Lan Wangji looked at the floor with a slight frown, seemingly contemplating whether or not it was safe to step on the papers. Wei Wuxian quickly scrambled up and pushed the drafts to either side. “Sorry, sorry, Lan Zhan! I got so caught up in drawing that I forgot. Here, look at this.”
He held up a freshly finished draft like a prized treasure. Lan Wangji looked at it, puzzled. “What is this?”
“The most effective way to cure Zewu-jun’s heart demon is for him to see Jin Guangyao one last time,” Wei Wuxian explained.
“How can he see him?”
“This is a talisman I just invented the Soul-Invoking Talisman. By controlling it with Chenqing, I can forcibly summon a soul onto this talisman. Regardless of whether they are willing or not, they must come.”
Lan Wangji asked, “And if you do not have Chenqing?”
“For ordinary vengeful spirits, the talisman alone is enough. But for spirits with extreme resentment like Jin Guangyao, I’d need Chenqing to control them, and likely the Stygian Tiger Seal as well.”
Lan Wangji’s face darkened instantly. “No.”
“Lan Zhan, this is the best way I can think of right now.”
Lan Wangji looked him in the eye, saying each word with heavy emphasis: “Brother must be saved, but you must not put yourself at risk.”
“It’s not a risk! It’s not dangerous at all, Lan Zhan. I am the Yiling Patriarch, after all.”
“How long can this talisman hold the soul?” Lan Wangji pressed. “Will they definitely cooperate? And if they do not, what then?”
Wei Wuxian considered. “I could draw it with my blood; that would make the summon last longer.”
Lan Wangji suddenly grabbed Wei Wuxian’s hand. “Wei Ying, I want to save my brother, but not at the cost of your life.”
Wei Wuxian felt the strength of the grip and winced slightly. “Alright, alright, I understand, Lan Zhan. Let go first, okay?”
Lan Wangji immediately released his hand. Seeing the red marks on Wei Wuxian’s skin, he lowered his head. “Wei Ying, I am sorry.”
Wei Wuxian waved the hand dismissively with a grin. “Lan Zhan, didn’t we agree? Neither of us needs to say those two phrases (Thank you and Sorry). Besides, it doesn’t even hurt.” He sighed. “I suppose I was a bit too hasty. Let’s think of another way then. We won’t use this one.”
“Mhm,” Lan Wangji agreed.
Wei Wuxian then hooked his arm through Lan Wangji’s. “Lan Zhan, my Soul-Invoking Talisman was actually inspired by your Inquiry. Except you need to translate the zither language, while mine allows direct speech. Isn’t that much more convenient?”
“Dangerous,” Lan Wangji repeated.
Wei Wuxian laughed. “Everything has pros and cons! It’s just that this body is a bit weak; otherwise, it wouldn’t be considered a risk at all.”
Lan Wangji added firmly, “The Stygian Tiger Seal is not to be used.”
Wei Wuxian raised his hand in a mock oath. “Understood, Hanguang-jun! I promise not to use it, absolutely not! I need to keep my life so I can stay with my Lan Er-gege every day!”
“Mhm,” Lan Wangji nodded.
Wei Wuxian tilted his head to look up at him, pouting. “Eh? Lan Zhan, you have no reaction at all? Still so expressionless? Am I not attractive enough anymore? Or has Er-gege grown tired of me?”
“Wei Ying!”
Seeing Lan Wangji’s earlobes begin to turn red, Wei Wuxian laughed with satisfaction and gave him a quick peck on the cheek. “That’s my Er-gege.”
Lan Wangji’s ears turned even redder, and his voice took on a dangerous edge. “Wei Ying!”
Wei Wuxian immediately jumped back two steps. “Lan Zhan, stay calm! The sun is still up, and I haven’t even had dinner yet!”
“No matter.”
Wei Wuxian ran to his desk and hugged it tightly. “I never expected you to be this kind of Hanguang-jun! In broad daylight, under the bright sun… it’s simply scandalous!”
Lan Wangji looked at him but said nothing more. He knelt down and began tidying up the mess on the floor. This time, he didn’t set the scraps aside; he simply used his spiritual energy to burn them all to ash.
