- Chapter 1 - Lan Zhan, What Should We Do?
Ever since Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji confessed their feelings for one another at the Guanyin Temple, the two had become nearly inseparable. They spent their days traveling together, engaging in night hunts and enjoying the scenic beauty of the world.
Lan Wangji wrote a letter to Lan Qiren, informing him that he had no plans to return to the Cloud Recesses anytime soon. He intended to travel abroad, and his specific date of return remained unknown.
Upon receiving the news, Lan Qiren was naturally so furious that his beard trembled and his eyes went wide. The “Twin Jades of Lan,” of whom he was once so proud, were now in a sorry state: one was perpetually distracted and soul-crushed, while the other had simply vanished without a trace.
The fine “Chinese cabbage” he had painstakingly raised had, to his utter disbelief, been made off with by the son of Cangse Sanren. Lan Qiren felt a deep, agonizing pain in his heart.
Standing before the memorial tablet of Qingheng-Jun, he lamented, “Brother! I have failed you! These two fine sons of yours… I have raised them both to ruin.”
One day, Wei Wuxian heard rumors of strange occurrences happening in Yiling. This piqued his interest; he found it quite amusing that someone actually dared to cause trouble on the Yiling Patriarch’s home turf.
Wei Wuxian asked, “Lan Zhan, tell me, what kind of monsters or ghosts do you think it is this time?”
Lan Wangji replied, “I do not know.”
Wei Wuxian said, “Lan Zhan, don’t step in later. Let me handle it myself.”
Lan Wangji replied, “Alright.”
“Lan Zhan, I’m hungry,” Wei Wuxian added.
Silently, Lan Wangji reached into his Qiankun pouch, pulled out some pastries he had just bought for Wei Wuxian, and handed them over.
Wei Wuxian happily took them and took a bite, then offered the remainder to Lan Wangji.
Lan Wangji, who was notoriously fastidious about cleanliness, felt his brow twitch slightly as he looked at the pastry with a bite mark in it. However, the moment he remembered it was Wei Ying who had bitten it, he stopped caring.
Just as he opened his mouth to eat it, Wei Wuxian suddenly pulled his hand back and popped the half-eaten pastry into his own mouth instead.
Lan Wangji: “…”
Wei Wuxian teased, “Lan Zhan, oh Lan Zhan, you’ve changed! How could you eat something someone else has already bitten? You can’t do that! You are Hanguang-Jun, the walking embodiment of the Gusu Lan sect rules! You are the quintessential noble gentleman!”
Lan Wangji replied, “You are not ‘someone else’.”
Wei Wuxian turned to look at Lan Wangji, a beaming smile on his face. “Then who am I?”
Lan Wangji remained silent.
Wei Wuxian leaned his face even closer to Lan Wangji’s and pressed, “Lan Zhan! Speak up! If I’m not ‘someone else,’ then who am I?!”
Lan Wangji still said nothing.
Wei Wuxian was forced to use his ultimate weapon. He wrapped his arms around Lan Wangji’s arm, shaking it back and forth as he looked up with a pitiful expression. In a soft, whining tone, he pleaded, “Er-gege~ My dear Lan Er-gege, just tell me~”
Lan Wangji had never possessed any resistance against Wei Wuxian. Seeing him like this, the tips of his ears began to turn red, though his face remained as calm as a still lake.
After a brief moment…
Lan Wangji said, “Every day.”
Wei Wuxian: “…”
Having “gone for the wool and come back shorn,” a huffy Wei Wuxian let go of Lan Wangji’s arm. With his hands on his hips, he stomped ahead, thinking to himself: This Lan Zhan is getting more and more wicked. Or has he always been this bad and I just never noticed?
Behind Wei Wuxian’s back, a faint, triumphant smile tugged at Lan Wangji’s lips. It lasted only a fleeting second before he quickened his pace to catch up.
Before long, the two arrived at an obscure mountain peak in Yiling. They had never paid much attention to it before and hadn’t realized Yiling contained such a mountain.
Before they even drew close, they felt an incredibly powerful ghostly aura. They exchanged a look, both sharpening their focus. It seemed this opponent would be quite troublesome.
Wei Wuxian drew Chenqing, intending to meet this powerful ghostly presence head-on. However, no matter how long he played the flute, there wasn’t a single shred of a reaction. He could clearly feel the massive amount of resentment and ghostly energy, yet he couldn’t command even a sliver of it.
Seeing that Chenqing was ineffective, Wei Wuxian tried using talismans, only to find that no method worked.
Was this opponent truly so much more powerful than himself?
Wei Wuxian’s brow furrowed deeply. “Lan Zhan, what should we do?”
