Good Night, Brother! - Chapter 10.1
“Hyung, have you packed everything?”
“Yeah.”
Eunhyun’s belongings barely filled half of his large suitcase. Jeong Yi Hyeon tilted his head slightly, looking skeptical as he asked again.
“This is all you packed?”
“Yeah. Clothes, underwear, a swimsuit? Most things are already at the accommodation. What else do I need to bring?”
“…”
“Seriously, though, why are you bringing so much for a three-day, four-night trip?”
Eunhyun glanced at Jeong Yi Hyeon’s luggage—a bulky suitcase with an equally large Boston bag stacked on top of it—sitting by the entrance.
The DSLR camera and professional tripod, packed solely to capture Eunhyun’s moments during the trip, already took up significant space. Add to that the hygiene essentials, like a nail clipper, and an emergency first-aid kit for unforeseen situations. Jeong Yi Hyeon sighed softly through his nose as he picked up Eunhyun’s surprisingly lightweight suitcase.
Although Eunhyun had appeared indifferent when the trip was planned, his face now seemed somewhat flushed with excitement as they prepared to leave the house.
“Let’s go already.”
The peak of summer heat was blazing, and with it came Eunhyun’s long-awaited summer vacation.
Truthfully, Eunhyun hadn’t planned much for this vacation.
While others found energy in creating travel itineraries, Eunhyun found researching transportation, accommodations, and local restaurants a headache. Back in college, he’d shown no interest in things like backpacking across Europe, which was practically a rite of passage for his peers.
Even when traveling, he didn’t enjoy sightseeing at tourist attractions. Instead, he preferred spending leisurely hours at local cafes or strolling through parks, immersing himself naturally in the atmosphere. This often earned him criticism from his more adventurous friends.
This summer, he had intended to stay home for a few days of rest or, at most, unwind in a hotel room doing absolutely nothing. However, after Jeong Yi Hyeon had persistently sung the praises of taking a trip together, Eunhyun finally relented.
The real start of their summer vacation began when the two climbed into the car together.
Jeong Yi Hyeon set the mood by curating a summer-appropriate playlist and handing Eunhyun a pair of sunglasses.
Soon, their sleek car gracefully curved out of the parking lot, its fluid movements mirroring its streamlined design.
Not long ago, Eunhyun had been lounging on the couch with his head resting on Jeong Yi Hyeon’s lap, idly scrolling through random, irrelevant news articles on his phone.
As Eunhyun lay there, Jeong Yi Hyeon alternated between running his fingers through Eunhyun’s hair and gently pressing his fingertips into his scalp for a massage. Out of the blue, he asked,
“Hyung, don’t you think we need a car?”
He explained that, with Eunhyun being pregnant, emergencies could happen, and having a car would make hospital visits much easier.
“You have a license, don’t you?”
“Yeah, I got it back in college.”
“Ah, I see.”
“Honestly, I’ve been thinking about getting a car too.”
“Really? Great minds think alike!”
Grinning brightly, Jeong Yi Hyeon leaned down and planted a quick kiss on the side of Eunhyun’s face where his cheek met his ear. The longer strands of his hair tickled Eunhyun’s skin.
“Hey, that tickles… Anyway, I’ve been thinking about it, and don’t you think a white Crescendo looks nice?”
“…”
Eunhyun’s eyes sparkled as he mentioned the name of a popular mid-sized sedan, but Jeong Yi Hyeon gently chided him.
“Hyung, we’re not going to use it just for a day or two. Wouldn’t an SUV be sturdier in the long run?”
“Well, yeah, but… the domestic SUVs I like are a bit pricey….”
What’s he planning to do with the 2 billion won I gave him? Make soup out of it? Jeong Yi Hyeon stared at Eunhyun intently before speaking again.
“Um… Hyung.”
“Yeah?”
“I actually already bought one. We’re picking it up tomorrow.”
The casual announcement, essentially an after-the-fact notice, left Eunhyun momentarily speechless. He furrowed his brow and asked,
“What…? What did you buy?”
“Just an SUV. I figured it’d be better to have more space for when Euni arrives.”
Eunhyun began mentally reviewing popular domestic SUVs.
Well… Families with kids do tend to prefer SUVs.
But Eunhyun should have known then why Jeong Yi Hyeon was smiling at him so cryptically.
The next day, in the underground parking lot of their apartment complex, Eunhyun bit his lower lip hard as he stared at the shield-shaped emblem adorned with a stag’s head.
“Hey, Jeong Yi Hyeon….”
“Yeah?”
“Be honest. You didn’t actually give me all your money, did you?”
“Hmm….”
Jeong Yi Hyeon simply looked at Eunhyun with a mysterious smile.
In front of them, sparkling under the lights as if flaunting its newness, was a pristine white German-brand SUV proudly occupying a parking spot. Eunhyun swallowed dryly.
“You idiot! This costs over 100 million won! And you didn’t even consult me…!”
“Oh, I was supposed to ask before buying it? Now that we’re married?”
“Ma… Married…?”
The word “married” was so embarrassing that Eunhyun’s ears turned a deep shade of red. Stammering for a while, he finally let out a deep sigh and said,
“Ha… Seriously… Buying such an expensive car without even…”
“I chose it because this brand is known for its safety. Safety is the top priority, after all.”
The mention of safety made Eunhyun recall that Jeong Yi Hyeon’s parents had driven a mid-sized sedan. They had passed away in a car accident.
Picking apart Jeong Yi Hyeon’s decision any further felt cruel, so Eunhyun pressed his lips tightly together. Still, he couldn’t help feeling conflicted as he stared at the gleaming luxury vehicle.
Wait…?
Now that he thought about it, something seemed odd. News reports often talked about the long waiting periods for foreign cars. So how had he suddenly managed to get his hands on a German-brand car?
Eunhyun narrowed his eyes suspiciously and asked, “Hey, when did you even place the order for this?”
“As soon as I got my driver’s license earlier this year.”
