- Chapter 8 - Taking on the Rich
Auntie Chen brought breakfast out from the kitchen and explained, “Mr. Su, a child back in my hometown fell ill, so I took a few days off to go back and care for them. You can just call me Auntie Chen.”
Su An nodded and said warmly, “Auntie Chen, you can just call me Xiao Su.”
Auntie Chen wiped the water from her hands onto her apron and said with a smile, “Breakfast is ready. Mr. Yu specifically instructed me before he left to heat it up only after you came downstairs.”
Su An walked to the dining table. “Thank you, Auntie Chen.”
Seeing that he barely had any meat on his bones, Auntie Chen worried, “Oh, Xiao Su, you’re so thin! You need to eat more. You youngsters shouldn’t be thinking about dieting all day. Eat up; there’s more in the pot if that isn’t enough.”
“I’m not dieting. Don’t worry, Auntie Chen, I’ll definitely eat plenty,” Su An promised with a smile. Since coming here, he felt like he had encountered so many people who genuinely cared for him.
As Su An ate his breakfast, he watched Auntie Chen busy herself around the house with something he couldn’t quite identify. Puzzled, he asked, “Auntie Chen, what are you busy with?”
“Oh, this? Before Mr. Yu left this morning, he told me to wrap all the sharp corners of the tables with this foam,” Auntie Chen replied, her hands never stopping.
Su An felt a surge of emotion in his heart. Just then, his phone on the table buzzed with a notification.
Yu Feng: [Are you awake? Remember to eat breakfast and apply your medicine.]
Su An: [Awake. Applied the medicine and finished my porridge.] Su An: [(Cat blowing a kiss.gif)] Su An: [Sent that by mistake. Just pretend you didn’t see it.]
At that moment, Yu Feng was sitting in the conference room for the monthly regular meeting. Special Assistant Zhou Ran stood behind him, watching with his own eyes as his boss opened his phone, sent a message, and received an emoji in return.
He couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread. Who is bold enough to send the boss an emoji? It couldn’t be the CEO’s wife, could it?
When Yu Feng saw the emoji Su An sent and that “guilty conscience” follow-up message, he couldn’t hold back a laugh.
The sales director, who was quite confident in his report and was currently delivering it with great fervor, paused mid-sentence. Cold sweat began to break out on his forehead. It’s over. Was that a cold laugh from President Yu? Did I say something wrong?
For a moment, the conference room fell into a pin-drop silence. Zhou Ran, standing behind Yu Feng, tried to signal the director to continue, but the man failed to understand.
“Are you finished?” Yu Feng looked up at him coldly. “Why are you looking at me? Is there something on my face?”
The sales director stammered, “I… I’m not finished yet…”
Yu Feng frowned. “If you aren’t finished, then continue. What, do I need to invite you to stand right next to me while you speak?”
The other executives sat in their seats, not daring to make a sound. Everyone had seen Yu Feng lose his temper before; it was more terrifying than a horror movie. The sales director could no longer maintain his fervor; he looked like a wilted plant as he dejectedly and rapidly finished his portion.
Knowing the truth, Zhou Ran’s lip twitched as he struggled to suppress a laugh. Yu Feng turned his head toward his assistant. “Does your face have a cramp?”
The smiling Zhou Ran instantly turned serious. “No, President Yu.”
“You preside over the rest of the meeting. I have some matters to attend to.” With that, Yu Feng stood up and walked out.
The moment Yu Feng left, the executives finally let their rigid backs slump as they breathed a collective sigh of relief. The room grew noisy for a moment. The administrative director lowered his voice and asked, “Old Liu, did you say something wrong just now? You gave me a heart attack.”
Director Liu still hadn’t recovered. “Just treat it like a dream…”
Zhou Ran lightly tapped the table with a file, and the room went silent. He put on a standard business smile. “Everyone, let’s continue.”
The executives shuddered. Assistant Zhou is also terrifying when he smiles like that.
After breakfast, Su An put on a thick coat. He tested his sprained foot; it was slightly sore but didn’t hinder his walking, so he prepared to head to the hospital. Before leaving, he told Auntie Chen he wouldn’t be back for lunch.
He took a taxi to the Class A hospital in the city center. When it came time to pay, even though he saw the extra zeros in his account, it still pained his wallet to watch the money go. He smoothly registered and waited for his number to be called. When his turn came, he stood up and pushed open the door to the consultation room.
An unexpected figure was sitting inside.
“Here for a check-up?” Gu Cheng had been stunned when he saw the name on his computer, but he reacted quickly.
Su An asked, “Doctor Gu? Why are you here?”
Gu Cheng raised an eyebrow. “This hospital belongs to my family.”
Su An: …I’m going to take on all you rich people.
“You didn’t really think I was doing charity work for Yu Feng for free, did you? Him? He doesn’t deserve it!” Gu Cheng looked disdainful. “The moment something happens, he orders me around like a dog. I’m not taking that kind of treatment.”
Su An waved his phone. “I recorded that, Doctor Gu.”
“Wait, don’t! He deserves it, he deserves it!” Gu Cheng chickened out. “How is it that you two have the same black heart?”
“Don’t belittle yourself, Doctor Gu.” How rare, Su An thought; it was the first time he’d seen someone compare themselves to a dog. He said in a leisurely tone, “Let’s get down to business. I want to do a full-body check-up today.”
“I wanted to drag you to the hospital the last time I saw you. Your body is truly too frail.” Gu Cheng adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, returning to his professional demeanor.
Su An nodded without arguing because he felt the same way. Being frail was fine; he could nourish himself slowly. He was just afraid this body had some major underlying issue like his original one did.
“We’re all friends here, so don’t worry about the fees. I’ll have them expedite the results for you. You can go straight to the tests.” Gu Cheng typed on his keyboard to open the orders.
Su An blinked. “Is this what it feels like to use the back door?”
Gu Cheng handed him the slips and gave a fawning smile. “Then you won’t let your Yu Feng listen to that recording, right?” Gu Cheng would never admit he was scared; it was just that Yu Feng, at nearly 1.9 meters tall, could send him flying two meters away with one punch.
It was frustrating to think about. The Gu and Yu families had been friends for generations and grew up together. When boys are young, they always have moments of hot-bloodedness, but in all the times they fought, Gu Cheng had never won a single match.
Su An waved the slips and walked away. “We’ll see.”
Gu Cheng slumped into his office chair, looking like life had lost its meaning. He had no idea that Su An hadn’t actually recorded anythingbit was all just an act.
