- Chapter 5 - I Just Like Him Like This
A barrage of verbal abuse erupted from the other end of the phone. Su An was incredibly grateful he had put the call on speaker; otherwise, his ears would have certainly suffered from that volume.
“Are we even that close?” Su An’s tone was ice-cold.
The original owner’s father was not a good man. On the very day after Su An’s mother died, he brought his mistress and his illegitimate son back to the Su household. From the moment they moved in, the father showed his true colors, blatantly favoring the illegitimate son. He had once even tried to send the original owner to the bed of a pot-bellied business partner to secure a deal. Fortunately, the original owner had found out early and escaped. When the deal fell through, his father had beaten and cursed him, leading the original owner to move out and live on his own.
The abuse continued over the line.
“What’s with that tone? Is that how you talk to your old man? Hanging around outside all day like some delinquent—do you even know how little you’re worth?”
“I’m telling you, it’s your brother’s birthday this weekend. You better be home. Do you hear me?”
“Oh, dear, speak to An’an nicely,” a conciliatory female voice chimed in—Su Kefan’s biological mother and Su An’s stepmother.
In novels, stepmothers are rarely good people. Unsurprisingly, she was no exception. On the surface, she appeared to care for Su An, but in reality, she used every opportunity to belittle him, calling him a sickly “invalid” who was useless from head to toe—claiming he could do nothing but use his face to hook men. While putting him down, she would conveniently praise her own son. Unfortunately, Su Kefan took those praises to heart, developing a superiority complex so intense he probably expected a standing ovation from every stray dog he passed.
Yu Feng stood by with a darkened expression, listening for a moment before stepping out with his phone to make a call. Su An continued to listen to his “trash father’s” nagging, letting the words go in one ear and out the other he felt very much like you can curse all you want, it has nothing to do with me.
His mind wandered, curious about what Yu Feng was doing. He vaguely heard words like “cancel,” “invite,” and a few other snippets. Eventually, Su An grew tired of the noise. He interrupted his father, “Are you done? If you’re done, I’m hanging up.”
“Su An! You dare try to hang up on”
Ignoring the roars and rages from the other side, Su An briskly ended the call and followed up with a “Delete and Block” combo. The world was finally quiet.
Yu Feng finished his call and walked back over, leaning lazily against the doorframe. “Planning on going?”
Su An’s lips curved into an arc, his voice carrying a leisurely lilt. “Of course. And I’m going to give him a little ‘surprise.'”
Yu Feng tapped his phone screen, speaking with interest: “As it happens, the Su family sent me an invitation too. I wasn’t going to go, but now it looks like there will be a good show to watch.”
“Naturally. It’s bound to be exciting,” Su An said confidently.
On Su Kefan’s birthday, the Su family invited many prominent figures from the business world. Su An found a casual sequined blazer to wear and specifically used hair gel to style his hair back, revealing his smooth forehead and handsome features. His thin lips were slightly curved, and his shimmering eyes were full of mirth.
Lately, Su An had been eating and sleeping well, so his spirit had recovered significantly. His complexion was no longer a terrifying, sickly pale, but had taken on a hint of a healthy flush.
Yu Feng stared at him for a long time before turning to grab a black down jacket from the closet.
“I don’t think that’s necessary…” Su An’s lip twitched at the sight of the heavy coat.
Seeing his refusal, Yu Feng shoved the jacket directly into his hands. “It’s cold out. Drape it over your shoulders.” He added a flat threat: “If you catch a cold, I’m not treating you. I’ll just throw you out.”
Knowing it was for his own good, Su An didn’t refuse again.
The driver arrived downstairs shortly after. Although Su An wouldn’t admit it, the moment he stepped out the door, his small face instinctively ducked into his collar. This tiny movement didn’t escape Yu Feng’s eyes; he smiled and reached out to pull Su An’s hood up.
Once in the car, Su An felt much better in the warmth. “Between style and temperature, I choose temperature after all.”
Yu Feng teased, “Who was the one saying they wouldn’t wear it just now?”
Su An turned honest. “You misheard.”
The car soon arrived at the Su residence. After getting out, Yu Feng took a call. By the time he turned around to look for Su An, the younger man was already gone.
Helplessly, Yu Feng put away his phone and headed inside. When Su An’s father saw Yu Feng, he was incredibly surprised. He had sent an invitation in hopes of flattery, but he never expected Yu Feng to actually show up.
The father approached with a fawning smile. “President Yu, long time no see.”
Yu Feng cast a flat glance at him, ignored his outstretched hand, and walked right past him. The smile froze on the father’s face as he awkwardly withdrew his hand. He was angry but had no way to show it; after all, the Su family still had several large contracts they hoped to sign with the Yu Corporation.
To avoid drawing attention, Su An had entered the banquet hall a step ahead of Yu Feng. Before the event officially started, he wandered around the hall, looking for snacks to fill his stomach. He was eating a small piece of cake, his mind drifting, when Yu Feng tapped him on the shoulder from behind.
Su An jumped in fright, nearly dropping his cake.
“You scared me to death!” Su An glared at the man like a cat with its fur standing on end.
“Don’t want to be associated with me?” Yu Feng pinched Su An’s cheeks with two fingers, making the younger man’s lips pout.
Su An slapped away his wandering hand and took a vicious bite of his cake as if he were biting Yu Feng himself. He didn’t realize that this intimate scene was witnessed by Su Kefan, who was surrounded by a crowd; Su Kefan’s gaze suddenly turned dark.
Su Kefan approached Su An with a wine glass, calling out obediently, “Brother.”
Su An lifted his eyelids slightly and gave a flat “Mhm.”
“Brother, what’s your… relationship with President Yu?” Su Kefan asked, feigning curiosity.
“You don’t live by the ocean, so why are you acting like you own the whole shore?” Su An looked at him with amusement.
Su Kefan’s grip on his wine glass tightened, but he forced a smile. “We haven’t seen each other in so long; I’m just worried about you, Brother.”
Su An ignored him. A flash of malice crossed Su Kefan’s eyes as he tipped his wine glass toward Su An. Su An stumbled back a step, and in a blind spot, his hand pushed Su Kefan’s arm back toward him.
The wine instantly splashed back, staining Su Kefan’s white suit with a large red blotch. He looked incredibly disheveled.
Su An looked at him with feigned concern. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t stand firm. Are you okay?”
“Su An!” Su Kefan hissed through gritted teeth. However, with so many guests watching, he couldn’t lose his temper and lash out.
Su An’s father also walked over with a grim expression. Before he could speak, Su An beat him to it: “Dad, hurry and take Brother to change his clothes. It’s quite embarrassing to be seen like this in such a setting.”
Su An was laughing internally: Go, go, if you don’t leave now, I won’t be able to hold back my smile.
Su Kefan’s mother, Zhang Lijiao, also rushed over in a panic. “Fanfan, Mommy will take you upstairs to change.”
The father pointed at Su An. “I’ll deal with you after the banquet.”
Su An didn’t bother responding, thinking: Who’s going to wait for you until the end of the banquet?
Su An walked away. As he passed Su Kefan, he whispered in a voice only the two of them could hear: “I have a bad temper. So, while I’m still treating you like a human being, try your best to act like one.”
A delicately handsome man sidled up to Su An. “That was so cool just now. I thought he was going to die of anger.”
Su An turned. “Tong Jiu?”
Tong Jiu was puzzled. “You know me?”
Su An being able to call out his name wasn’t because he remembered him from the book, but because this person was incredibly famous—his face and signature were on billboards everywhere.
Su An said helplessly, “Have you forgotten that you’re a top-tier superstar?”
Tong Jiu had come along with his older brother in his capacity as the young master of the Tong family. He seemed to just realize this, laughing and scratching his head. “I almost forgot.”
Tong Jiu asked, “What’s your name?”
“Su An.”
“Su… You’re also a member of the Su family!” Tong Jiu covered his mouth, as if he had discovered some shocking secret.
Su An replied indifferently, “You saw it just now; I don’t get along with them. Don’t worry about it.”
Tong Jiu patted Su An’s shoulder like a good friend. “I’ll look out for you from now on. I just like people like you.”
A cold, emotionless voice came from beside them: “What exactly do you like?”
Tong Jiu didn’t notice and replied instinctively, “I like him like”
Yu Feng was staring at him, his gaze as cold as ice.
Tong Jiu: “…ignore me…”
