God is Being Pampered by the Group - Chapter 6
Chapter 6: The End of Science is Metaphysics
The Man Who Aspires to Become a Best Actor in the Entertainment Industry
From the moment he descended into this world, Bai Yan knew that although his power was suppressed, it had not completely disappeared. This indicated that some form of the “strange and supernatural” existed in this world; it was not a purely Law-Ending Age.
The moment he saw that actor just now, Bai Yan understood what was happening. It inevitably reminded him of a very popular saying from two lifetimes ago:
“Animals are not allowed to become spirits after the founding of the People’s Republic.”
Of course, the original meaning of this phrase was merely a joke used to tease clever and cute animals that acted like humans, suggesting they had “attained spirit status.”
However, some also say that the end of science is metaphysics. Otherwise, why would there be so many unsolved mysteries that science cannot explain? Most people, however, believe in science and simply laugh such ideas off.
Bai Yan could not return to the original world of Earth. Regardless of whether that saying held any deep meaning there, in this world, he felt it truly and saw it with his own eyes.
And that actor was likely not the only one.
Guan Zhou looked shocked. “What do you mean, ‘not human’?”
“Exactly what it sounds like,” Bai Yan’s expression remained calm, showing no realization that his words were startling.
“Wait.” Guan Zhou couldn’t even focus on eating. He pressed a hand to his forehead and said with difficulty, “Qi Yue the one just now he’s really not human?”
Bai Yan nodded.
Seeing this, Guan Zhou swallowed his dry throat. Various demons and ghosts flashed through his mind; his materialistic worldview was being ravaged by a violent storm.
“Then… What kind of thing is he?”
Bai Yan glanced at him, thinking that after the incidents involving himself, Guan Zhou’s ability to handle stress should have improved. It seemed he had over-estimated him.
“A rat spirit,” Bai Yan said truthfully.
Of course, the two cases were different. Bai Yan came from another world, so anything happening to him was easier to accept, but Qi Yue was born and raised in this world.
Guan Zhou searched through thousands of years of Chinese history and had never truly heard of or witnessed an animal becoming a spirit. Naturally, he was profoundly shaken.
It took a good while before he finally calmed down and accepted the facts.
Then, remembering something, Guan Zhou’s face grew urgent: “In that case, did he come over to you suddenly because he knows your background?!”
“No.”
Bai Yan said those two words with absolute certainty.
Guan Zhou felt slightly relieved, but he didn’t relax completely. The fact that Qi Yue was mysteriously interested in Bai Yan was suspicious enough; knowing the man wasn’t human made it even more important to stay vigilant.
…
On the other hand, after Qi Yue met up with his manager, they ran into the director after just a few words. The director, surnamed Zhou, looked to be over forty. Seeing Qi Yue coming from that direction, he glanced over casually.
He didn’t see Bai Yan’s face clearly, but he did see Guan Zhou, who was dressed as a guard extra.
“I didn’t expect you to know Guan Zhou,” Director Zhou said.
Qi Yue paused and tilted his head. “Hmm?”
“That kid is actually pretty decent; he leaves an impression. It’s just that his acting isn’t good. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been struggling this long without breaking out.”
Director Zhou naturally knew Guan Zhou, having seen him countless times. But unfortunately, some people simply aren’t cut out for this profession; without natural talent for performing, no amount of hard work helps.
Qi Yue didn’t care about the extra named Guan Zhou, but he thought for a moment and smiled. “Director Zhou, do you know who the person next to him is?”
“The person next to him?” Director Zhou looked toward Guan Zhou again.
“Oh, you mean his cousin.”
“Cousin?”
Director Zhou nodded. “That’s what Guan Zhou said. The young man was curious about how a film crew works, so he begged Guan Zhou to bring him in to see. He promised not to leak photos or info… Why? Is he a fan of yours?”
It was only because Guan Zhou had such good interpersonal relationships that he was allowed; anyone else would have been kicked out as a loiterer long ago.
Qi Yue smiled without confirming or denying. Instead, he asked, “What did you need me for, Director?”
“Right, almost forgot. I want to tell you that the next scene’s plot will be changed to…”
Qi Yue’s manager stopped in place. She was an intellectual-looking woman in her early thirties.
She was also someone who knew of Qi Yue’s non-human identity.
She turned to look toward Guan Zhou, specifically focusing on Bai Yan, also wondering why Qi Yue was so interested in this person.
Suddenly, she froze as she caught sight of Bai Yan’s face, which had been partially blocked by Guan Zhou.
As a celebrity manager, her first instinct was a powerful urge to sign him immediately. This level of attractiveness was simply incredible.
He’s young but doesn’t seem to follow the right path; is that long silver hair a wig? And why wear colored contacts? Even so, he looked stunning, the manager thought absentmindedly.
Snapping out of it, she glanced at Qi Yue, who was discussing the script with Director Zhou, and then walked toward Guan Zhou.
“Hello.”
Guan Zhou, who had just managed to piece his shattered worldview back together, heard a voice belonging to the manager of the “non-human” Qi Yue.
Instantly, Guan Zhou’s guard went up. He stepped in front of Bai Yan and spoke first: “Is there something you need?”
The manager smiled, acting as if she didn’t see Guan Zhou’s defensiveness, and held out a business card.
“I am a manager from Yiyun Media Group. This is my card.”
As the saying goes, one does not hit a smiling face. Upon hearing the company name, Guan Zhou’s expression softened. As he took the card, he looked down and saw the name “Wang Shan.”
Guan Zhou was a bit surprised. He had heard of Wang Shan; while not among the most elite “Ace” managers, she had made quite a few stars famous. He hadn’t expected her to be Qi Yue’s manager.
As for Yiyun Media Group, it was one of the three major film and television entertainment companies in the Wencheng district. If Guan Zhou had been offered an olive branch like this in the past, he would have probably woken up laughing from his dreams.
But now, it was obvious that Wang Shan, like Qi Yue, was targeting Bai Yan.
Guan Zhou wasn’t sure if Wang Shan was also non-human like Qi Yue. Thinking this, he glanced back at Bai Yan but received no response, so he could only chuckle awkwardly:
“So it’s Sister Wang. Is there something I can help you with?”
The fact that he didn’t become fawning upon hearing her identity made Wang Shan think better of him, but the focus today wasn’t on Guan Zhou. Furthermore, Wang Shan wasn’t in a hurry; she was simply moved by the discovery of raw talent.
“To be honest, I think your cousin’s appearance is very suitable for entering the entertainment industry.”
Before Guan Zhou could speak, Wang Shan added, “No need to give me an answer right away. You can both think it over carefully.”
She smiled again, her gaze sweeping past Guan Zhou to Bai Yan. With a slight nod, she left first, leaving Guan Zhou holding her card and frowning at her retreating back.
“Your dream is to become a big star, isn’t it?”
Bai Yan’s voice drifted through the air. It was a pleasant sound, carrying a certain rhythmic charm.
Guan Zhou turned around and smiled. “Yeah. I once said I was a man determined to become a Best Actor in the entertainment industry.”
Bai Yan looked at the card in his hand. “Isn’t this an opportunity?”
Guan Zhou rolled his eyes speechlessly. “She clearly came for you. Have some self-awareness, will you?”
Bai Yan: “I can recommend you to her.”
“Thanks, but you’re not even an actor; what’s the use of a recommendation? Besides…” Guan Zhou twitched the corner of his mouth. “I have a bit of self-awareness too.”
Guan Zhou knew his shortcomings very well or rather, his fatal flaw.
Acting skills.
So he studied others’ performances diligently, analyzing every movement and micro-expression, doing immense amounts of homework. But, no talent meant no talent.
Once, his mentor had evaluated him: A performance without a soul is just a clumsy mimicry show. To be a great actor, you need more than just that.
Guan Zhou, you aren’t suited for this profession. You should find another path.
