God is Being Pampered by the Group - Chapter 19
Chapter 19: You Are Dead
Daily Life
Evening. The sky was awash with an orange-red sunset.
The “working robot” Guan Zhou was heading home from work. Thinking that he would soon see the silver-haired beauty at home, his mood brightened significantly, and even his exhaustion seemed to fade away.
However, Guan Zhou’s brow furrowed slightly as he wondered: Is Bai Yan getting too bored being home alone?
He couldn’t just bring Bai Yan to the film set at will. Besides the fact that he didn’t know if the rat spirit Qi Yue had given up his prying designs, he was much busier now than before and couldn’t look after Bai Yan in all aspects.
The more he thought about it, the tighter his brow became, until his gaze accidentally brushed past the car window…
He slammed on the emergency brakes! Nearly causing an accident.
Amidst a chorus of curses from the string of drivers behind him, Guan Zhou hurriedly pulled the car to the curb, opened the door, and stepped out toward a familiar figure.
Bai Yan was standing outside a “fluffy” pet/gift shop, holding the black cat in his arms. Next to him stood a large, packaged plush doll, roughly as tall as Bai Yan himself. Many passing girls couldn’t help but stop and look back.
Those golden eyes, calm as water, reflected the approaching Guan Zhou.
“What are you doing here?”
Guan Zhou looked at the plush toy, then at the quietly standing Bai Yan, unsure of what to say.
He thought Bai Yan would be at home at this hour; who would have expected to run into him halfway? What if he hadn’t noticed? It was fine to go out shopping, but he had to stay safe, especially since his popularity online hadn’t died down yet. What if someone recognized him? What if he met a bad person? What if…
But before Guan Zhou could finish his wild imaginings, he heard Bai Yan say calmly:
“I’m waiting for you.”
He was indeed waiting for Guan Zhou, knowing he would return via this road. It also meant he wouldn’t have to take the bus or subway back.
Just after saying this, Bai Yan saw Guan Zhou looking deeply moved: …?
“And this is…?” Guan Zhou pointed at the life-sized doll beside him.
Bai Yan: “A prize from a lucky draw.”
The corner of Guan Zhou’s eye twitched. For something this big, it must have been the first prize. However, Guan Zhou didn’t say anything; he just nodded, then habitually picked up the large doll and walked with Bai Yan toward the car.
He stuffed the doll into the back seat and was about to open the driver’s door when his peripheral vision caught a shop, and he suddenly paused.
“Wait for me a moment.”
With that, Guan Zhou ran off a few steps.
Bai Yan took his seat in the passenger side, watching Guan Zhou’s departure. He saw him hurriedly enter a… toy store?
But looking at the models and gadgets displayed in the window, they were bursting with high-tech vibes clearly not the kind of toys sold for average small children.
After a short while, Guan Zhou emerged from the toy store. His previously empty hands now held a rectangular box, with stylized font on it that read:
《Xiawei SSYQL X550 Game Console》
Returning to the car and meeting Bai Yan’s slightly suspicious gaze, Guan Zhou said with a straight face: “Something to pass the time for you.”
Recalling that Bai Yan seemed quite interested in games, having downloaded several small games on his phone and seeing him playing on the phone whenever he was free, though… His skills were truly abysmal.
Guan Zhou had already abandoned all hope for Bai Yan’s gaming technique. However, the phone screen was so small that staring at it for a long time was bad for the eyes. It just so happened that the TV at home was sitting idle. This would also reduce the chances of Bai Yan going out and encountering bad people truly killing multiple birds with one stone.
Originally, Guan Zhou had planned to get a holographic gaming pod, but his tight financial situation forced him to painfully give that up. A holographic helmet was an option, though also expensive, but he’d read online that using them too much could cause headaches, likely due to substandard technology. Rejected.
Of course, the model he bought wasn’t cheap either. It had been placed in the most prominent spot in the shop, and Guan Zhou had set his sights on it the moment he walked in.
The shop owner’s eyes had instantly narrowed with joy as he quickly packed it up, fearing Guan Zhou would change his mind.
The Xiaomi ASYL X550 was the most popular mainstream console on the market, with strong graphics and good performance. Guan Zhou had made the decision on the spot without a second thought. He couldn’t mistreat his silver-haired beauty; while paying, Guan Zhou felt a mix of pain and joy.
Upon arriving home, Guan Zhou first went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
The black cat jumped onto the coffee table and circled the rectangular game console box twice, its long tail swaying in the air.
After a while, the black cat lost interest and returned to the sofa, sitting down next to Bai Yan. Its human-like expression looked slightly intoxicated, as if it were soaking in a warm ocean an irresistible temptation.
“Meow”
When the pleasant dinner time ended, Bai Yan was pushed into the bathroom by Guan Zhou. Without saying anything, Bai Yan looked at his expression, glanced at the still-unopened game console, and complied.
So, while Bai Yan was showering, Guan Zhou began his work.
The black cat curled up on the sofa, watching Guan Zhou tear open the game console box to reveal the various components inside.
Fitting, assembling, connecting to the TV… Guan Zhou did it all fluently and with ease, as if these steps were second nature to him. He didn’t even glance at the manual lying nearby.
Ten-odd minutes later, Bai Yan emerged from the bathroom to see a high-tech console setup in the living room, completely different from the game consoles in his memory of the original Earth.
The console was semi-circular, designed ergonomically so that two arms could rest comfortably on it. The most striking features were two spheres semi-embedded and floating. Aside from those, there were no visible buttons.
“How do you operate it?” Bai Yan asked.
Finally encountering an area unknown to Bai Yan, Guan Zhou seemed very excited. Since learning that this silver-haired beauty came from another world and possessed incredible abilities, Bai Yan had never asked for help with either the script of this world or the operation of daily items. This had left Guan Zhou feeling dejected for a long time.
However, Guan Zhou could still detect from small details that Bai Yan was somewhat unfamiliar with this world such as that inadvertently revealed curiosity… And aside from the “small skills” Bai Yan had mentioned before, it was possible that Bai Yan’s own adaptability and learning capacity were simply very strong.
His silver-haired beauty was not only pure and lovely but also very intelligent. Guan Zhou was very relieved to realize this.
Guan Zhou first turned on the TV, searched the game section, and chose a recently popular single-player game. Finding that it cost money to play, he paid directly without thinking, wondering idly if he should get a VIP membership so Bai Yan could play whatever he wanted.
As the game screen unfolded, Guan Zhou began to operate it while explaining to Bai Yan. He sat cross-legged on the sofa, holding the two spheres in his hands, manipulating the character in the game to perform various actions.
“…Just like that. It’s very simple.”
Bai Yan nodded. It was indeed simple the controller had just been replaced by these two spheres. Aside from a better sense of immersion, there wasn’t much difference.
“Alright, you give it a try.”
Guan Zhou moved aside, offering guidance here and there, his heart full of a sense of accomplishment.
Then, he watched with his own eyes as the character Bai Yan was controlling walked on a perfectly flat, unobstructed ground and plop fell straight into a pit…
“You Are Dead”
Guan Zhou: …
How should I put it… it wasn’t a surprise at all.
