- Chapter 19 - The Fat Snake
Luo Qi approached the round, plump object.
It was indeed his little snake, though its midsection had swollen by a full circle. Resting in the shadows without any light reflecting off its scales, it looked like a black dough stick, thick in the middle and tapering at both ends.
He poked the snake’s body. It was soft and springy, and because it had thickened, it actually felt quite nice to hold.
“Little fat snake,” Luo Qi couldn’t help but let out a laugh, “what did you sneak off and eat?”
The “little fat snake” gazed at him with its bright pupils and shifted forward, stretching its head toward the edge of the pillow.
The “Little Fruit” (Luo Qi) was laughing, but for once, the snake didn’t feel comforted.
It truly wanted to weep.
Following the title of “little hatchling,” it had now earned the nickname “little fat snake.” How was it ever going to salvage its image after this?
Its charm points had officially hit rock bottom.
The snake rested its head on the edge of Luo Qi’s pillow, its long belly stretching like a suspension bridge from the nightstand. The middle sagged heavily as it struggled to maintain its position.
It looked as though it wanted to get onto the bed but didn’t quite dare, looking utterly pathetic.
Luo Qi used his palm to support its belly. “Up you go.”
The little snake rubbed its head against his sweet-smelling pillow, pressing down on a single stray silver hair.
It licked the spot a couple of times with the tip of its tongue before settling over the hair. Its plump belly glided across Luo Qi’s palm as it slithered, finally curling into a shape that looked like an ‘S’ joined with a ‘U’ on the soft pillow.
“Did you steal something from the fridge?” Luo Qi rubbed the bulging stomach, helping it digest. “How did you manage to stuff yourself like this?”
The snake had eaten a frozen mouse only yesterday, it shouldn’t have been hungry today.
“Just lie here and rest for a bit.”
Luo Qi settled the snake on the pillow and went downstairs to check the refrigerator. Everything inside was perfectly intact, with no signs of anything having been opened.
He went to the activity room to check the surveillance footage. The lock on the glass enclosure was still fastened.
In the recording, around 1:00 AM, the little snake had once again vanished into thin air.
It was exactly the same as the previous two times.
Luo Qi checked every camera in the house. For privacy reasons, only the public areas and hallways had monitors, the bedrooms did not.
After spending a long time searching and analyzing the footage on the light screen, he finally spotted something unusual.
Around three o’clock, “Little Black” was draped over a snake crystal sculpture in the main hall.
How did it get there?
Luo Qi dragged the progress bar back and saw a thin, winding line on the floor, thick in the middle and short at the ends, crawling along the corner of the wall.
One frame earlier, and the line disappeared.
This manor was simply too large, and the old butler hadn’t visited in a long time. Having been back for several days, Luo Qi had only spent time on the first through third floors. It wouldn’t be surprising if small animals were hiding in the other rooms.
But the little snake shouldn’t be eating random things, especially when it wasn’t hungry.
He pondered for a moment, then suddenly remembered something.
Wasn’t the snake in the study also a living creature?
He immediately got up and headed to the study. The snake enclosure was sitting empty on the desk.
The snake inside was gone, and there were faint bloodstains on the wood shavings.
Little Black had eaten one of its own kind. Why?
Luo Qi returned to the bedroom full of confusion. His little snake was still coiled on the pillow, though it had changed positions.
Its fat belly was sunk deep into the cotton, its head hooked back to rest against its side. Its tail, the only part still capable of agile movement, was wrapped tightly around a corner of the pillow as if trying to twist it off. The force of the grip left the tip of the pillow wrinkled and crumpled.
“Are you uncomfortable?”
Luo Qi sat on the bed to give it a massage, rubbing the scales with extremely gentle pressure using his fingertips.
The snake’s tail draped over his wrist and drew an ‘X’.
“Not uncomfortable?”
The snake drew another ‘X’.
“Then is it comfortable or not?”
The snake drew a circle, then slowly drew another ‘X’.
Luo Qi didn’t understand what it meant, but he didn’t press the matter.
After kneading the snake for a while, he flipped through some books to look up information and found a jar of digestive powder in the cabinet to mix for it.
He went to pick up the snake, but it stubbornly refused to let go of the pillow, its tail hooked firmly around the corner.
The little snake couldn’t bear to be away from his scent. Luo Qi realized that this was likely why it had dragged its bloated body all the way to the bedside last night.
What a poor little fat snake.
Luo Qi had no choice but to carry the snake and the pillow downstairs together.
He placed the pillow on the dining table. The snake remained nestled inside, only poking its head out to take a few sips of the digestive water from the bowl.
When it was finished, Luo Qi used a tissue to wipe its mouth.
This time, the snake didn’t resist, obediently accepting the care.
After wiping its head, Luo Qi smoothed down its belly. The snake’s tail hooked intermittently around his arm, sliding against his skin whenever his hand moved away.
“Alright, stay lying down,” he rubbed the snake’s head, “I have to eat breakfast, eventually.”
The “Little Fruit” got up to prepare food at the stove. The snake tucked its entire body into the center of the pillow, its head resting on that silver strand of hair, watching the human busy himself.
It was clearly just a case of overeating, yet he was treating it as if it were seriously ill.
The little snake felt as though it were melting into the fragrant pillow.
It wriggled on the pillow to flip over, determined to leave as much of its own scent behind as possible.
A moment later, the “Little Fruit” sat down with a plate of fried eggs and bacon, and the snake instantly went still.
The phone on the table rang. He tapped the answer button, and a holographic figure appeared over the table.
“Luo Qi, what time are you heading out today?”
It was Xue Ying. There was a routine meeting called by the King this afternoon.
“Around three o’clock.”
“Aren’t you leaving earlier? I plan to be there by one.”
“What’s the point of going so early?”
“To treat you to afternoon tea.”
This shameless remark immediately alerted the little snake. It propped up its head and let out a threatening hiss at the holographic figure.
However, because its belly was so bloated, it only appeared as a tiny speck emerging from the pillow.
Luo Qi’s hand, cutting the eggs, paused.
Has this Xue Ying guy not learned his lesson?
“Afternoon tea? You should find someone else. There’s nothing for us to talk about.”
“But I specifically want to treat you.”
The little snake hissed even louder.
“What was that noise?” the man on the screen asked. From his angle, he couldn’t see the snake.
Luo Qi patted the snake’s head, and it ducked back down.
“Or you can treat me,” Xue Ying added. “I’ll waive the medical fees from the other day, so you owe me at least one meal.”
Luo Qi looked up at him. “Haven’t you mostly recovered?”
“I used some specialized medicine,” Xue Ying said, his voice dropping an octave. “Luo Qi, we can’t just let this matter go.”
Luo Qi shrugged, putting a piece of meat into his mouth. “Today really isn’t good.”
“Do you have something urgent to handle?”
“Yeah, pretty urgent,” Luo Qi propped his chin on the back of his hand, looking past the hologram at the snake. “I have to take care of a little thing that ate too much.”
“A little thing that ate too much?”
“Yes,” Luo Qi put down his fork, “that’s all for now.”
He hung up, cleared his plate, and carried the snake back upstairs.
He planned to let the snake get some movement, as moderate exercise would help with digestion.
“Don’t worry, Little Black,” Luo Qi said softly, “I can stay with you for a bit longer today.”
The snake lay in his arms, looking up at him. From this angle, it could perfectly see those lips.
The “Little Fruit’s” lips were small but full, like cherry flesh, but when he smiled, they didn’t look delicate, they carried a sense of cool detachment.
Especially when facing that two-legged S-rank Alpha.
Only when facing the snake did he show that kind of tender smile.
The snake immersed itself in the pillow, savoring the happy times of being a “little thing that ate too much.”
It was placed, pillow and all, on the floor of the activity room. Two small, watery golden eyes watched the “Little Fruit’s” retreating back.
The “Little Fruit” picked up a set of building blocks. It was already assembled, but it was missing a head.
It was a lumpy, crooked body—the fat caterpillar that the “Little Fruit” had drawn by hand.
“Little fat snake.” As if discovering something amusing, he excitedly held the ugly, headless creature and placed it in front of the snake.
“Look, doesn’t this look just like you right now?”
Little Black: …
Next time, it definitely wouldn’t eat random things.
