- Chapter 7 - A Misunderstanding, and Qianyan Loses Her Communicator
Contrary to Yu Qianyan’s expectations, Yu Qishan agreed quite readily to her request for Rong Shu to accompany her to the military school, but she had plenty of criticisms regarding the engagement outfit Qianyan had designed.
“What is this aesthetic? It’s hideous! I have never seen anyone wear something like this for their engagement.”
Yu Qianyan replied, “Isn’t being different a good thing? I think it’s beautiful, grand, dignified, and elegant.”
This outfit was a common style from the world of cultivation, blended with popular elements of the Empire. Yu Qishan found it difficult to understand, but just imagining Rong Shu wearing it made Qianyan smile involuntarily.
Yu Qishan found the look on Yu Qianyan’s face a bit hard to watch, so she turned to the side to study the design sketches, but she simply couldn’t see where the appeal was.
As an aristocrat with real power, one who had earned her position through bloody battles in the military, she couldn’t understand this fussy, intricate style, with its layers upon layers of silver trim and gold embroidery.
However, after looking closely, she had to admit that the outfit was indeed elegant and subtle. It fit the extravagant and flamboyant aesthetic of the Empire’s nobility reasonably well, and it wasn’t too outrageous.
Assuming it was just a young person’s desire to be unique, Yu Qishan decided to let them do as they pleased.
After all, the wedding was the main event, and she figured Yu Qianyan knew what she was doing, given that the actual wedding attire they had decided on was quite standard.
After reporting on how things were going with Rong Shu, Yu Qianyan still felt a bit uneasy, so she brought up the matter of Rong Shu’s schooling again.
Yu Qishan waved her hand dismissively and said, “What are you worried about? This isn’t exactly a rare occurrence, and it’s quite easy to handle.”
“Not a rare occurrence?”
Hadn’t the Qilin Military Academy always had a policy against accepting Omegas?
Seeming to realize she had revealed too much, Yu Qishan immediately adopted an impatient attitude and shooed Yu Qianyan away.
Yu Qianyan took a long look at Yu Qishan, vaguely understanding something, and obediently returned to her room.
She turned off all the lights, pulled the curtains shut until no seam remained, and sat cross-legged on the carpet. This was the posture she used to use for cultivation, which helped her find inner peace, and it was perfect for helping her focus her thoughts right now.
The idea of having Rong Shu attend school with her had been a whim, but Yu Qishan’s attitude had made her inexplicably concerned.
If she remembered correctly, the protagonist of the original book, Zhu Lanjun—the commoner Omega that the original host had been painfully obsessed with, was a student at the Qilin Military Academy.
She attended as a highly talented commoner Beta.
Zhu Lanjun had shone brightly at the military academy, attracting the attention of countless Alphas, including the original host, who had been forced into the school by Yu Qishan, and Zhu Lanjun’s official canon partner, the Empire’s Imperial Princess, Qi Yan.
Zhu Lanjun was indeed gifted. That talent didn’t just refer to her high rank or her beautiful appearance, though those were certainly her strengths, but Yu Qianyan believed that Zhu Lanjun’s most formidable attribute was her brain. She was quite intelligent.
She was so smart that if she hadn’t dropped out to marry Qi Yan, she might have become a transcendent, groundbreaking scientist, subverting the existing gender hierarchy and leading all of humanity into a brand-new era.
This wasn’t just Yu Qianyan’s blind trust in the protagonist. Zhu Lanjun had actually researched something while in school, and she had even mentioned it to the original host once.
Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, Zhu Lanjun did not continue her experiments. Instead, she dropped out of school on Qi Yan’s recommendation and switched career paths to enter the entertainment industry. Relying on her angelic face and mermaid-like voice, she quickly became the hottest singer in the entire Empire.
Even after marrying into the royal family and becoming Qi Yan’s wife, and even after Qi Yan was crowned Empress, Zhu Lanjun never stopped her performing career.
By the end of the original book, Zhu Lanjun had become an idol known to everyone in the interstellar era. Even on remote trash planets, people had heard her name and her songs, and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that a single song of hers was worth a fortune.
People always loved to discuss the legendary campus romance of Zhu Lanjun, who disguised herself as a Beta to attend school, and the Empress Qi Yan. They also praised Zhu Lanjun for being able to break down the barriers of gender discrimination and continuing to have her own career after marriage, making her a role model for all Omegas.
Yet, Yu Qianyan always felt that the heights Zhu Lanjun should have reached were far greater than that.
What was more interesting was the story of Zhu Lanjun and Qi Yan. It sounded like a classic “rags to riches” tale, a commoner Omega loved by a royal Alpha, eventually transformed into the Empress. But in reality, before she fell in love with Zhu Lanjun, Qi Yan wasn’t particularly outstanding among the princes and princesses. It was only after she got together with Zhu Lanjun that she gradually gained the Emperor’s favor through various political and military achievements.
Everyone said this was the power of love, of mutual support and common progress, but Yu Qianyan always felt something was wrong.
What if “Omegas disguising as Betas to enroll” wasn’t an isolated case?
No one had ever heard of the military academy having Omega students, and the school rules explicitly prohibited admitting them. Some students who had performed exceptionally well in the academy seemingly vanished after graduation. Were these missing outstanding students just cases of “talent wasted”?
Omegas were rare, physically weak, and needed protection, but did that mean every Omega liked the education of the “rose garden,” willing to stay at home, raise children, and dedicate their whole lives to others?
Where did all those rebellious, non-conformist Omegas who happened to possess various talents go?
Yu Qianyan vaguely sensed that this world was different from the plot in many ways, and she couldn’t help but want to investigate.
From the moment she arrived, this world became reality. If there really were hidden, dark aspects beneath the plot, then the fall of the Yu family might not have been entirely the original host’s fault.
After all, Yu Qishan was originally a staunch supporter of the Emperor, but later chose to support a different royal Alpha. And Yu Qishan’s nemesis, Duke Xiong Weian, was a loyal supporter of Qi Yan.
Xiong Weian was the organizer of that banquet, the one who stopped Rong Shu’s stepfather from lunging at her, and the one who helped Rong Shu take down the original host and take over the Yu family’s assets and power.
A strong sense of crisis surged. Yu Qianyan’s emotions stirred, and she immediately decided that even without a sword in hand, she would start physical training from tomorrow, to become stronger as soon as possible.
Before the predetermined fate arrived, she had to have the ability to protect herself and her family.
Whether it was Yu Qishan, who was bearing the heavy burden for the original host, or Rong Shu, who had been innocently dragged into this treacherous turmoil.
Especially since Rong Shu would soon be enrolling with her. If the military academy truly had shady practices regarding Omegas disguising as Betas, there was no guarantee someone wouldn’t target Rong Shu.
Fueled by her passionate resolve, Yu Qianyan grabbed her communicator and sent a message to Rong Shu: “I will definitely protect you.”
The message was sent, but it was like a stone dropping into the ocean. She didn’t know if Rong Shu had already gone to sleep or was too busy to see it.
As time passed, second by second, Yu Qianyan slowly calmed down. Only then did she realize her reaction seemed a bit over the top, very different from her usual composed self, and even her meditation posture hadn’t been able to provide the peace of mind it usually did.
Could it be that her ruthless cultivation path was backfiring because she hadn’t practiced in so long?
Having sent such a thoughtless message, she assumed that even if Rong Shu saw it, she would be completely confused. Yu Qianyan now felt a slow, creeping awkwardness and, unskillfully, began trying to figure out how to unsend the message.
Suddenly, her communicator rang. Yu Qianyan’s hand shook, and she gritted her teeth before tapping to open it.
Fortunately, it wasn’t Rong Shu. It was the shop owner, Jian Chuan, whom she had added today. He said he had found a reliable swordsmith, could have the custom sword ready in about five days, and asked if Yu Qianyan had any specific requirements.
Yu Qianyan was overjoyed and immediately threw her previous embarrassment to the back of her mind. She scrambled off the carpet and pounced onto her bed, starting to describe the appearance of her life-bound sword to Jian Chuan in detail, using flowery and eloquent language.
After sending a voice message that lasted nearly three minutes, Jian Chuan replied after a long while: “I can’t do it.”
Yu Qianyan hurriedly asked if it was a lack of materials or if he didn’t understand the style, saying she could go communicate with the smith in person if necessary.
Jian Chuan: It’s not that, it’s just that what you described is too difficult. How can it be a heavy sword that has thickness but is also incomparably sharp, all while being lightweight and agile? The swordsmith said she can’t do it. Miss Yu, did you get this sword idea from a web novel? Novels are fake, don’t take them seriously and make things difficult for the master craftsman.
Yu Qianyan couldn’t explain it, but in this world without spiritual energy or magical formations, achieving the effect of her life-bound sword was indeed impossible.
After some communication, Yu Qianyan could only painfully settle for less, saying that as long as it was an ancient Eastern-style sword, the heavier the better, and to just let the smith make it as they saw fit.
Jian Chuan sent back an “Okay” emoji.
Before Yu Qianyan could thank Jian Chuan, Yu Qishan suddenly burst through the door, snatched the communicator from Yu Qianyan’s hand, and scolded her angrily: “It’s the middle of the night, you aren’t sleeping, and who are you sending voice messages to? You were so loud! ‘Unparalleled,’ ‘soulmates,’ ‘love at first sight’ do you even know you’re getting engaged? I don’t care what you do before you get married, but if you dare to mess around after you’re married and treat that Rong girl poorly, embarrassing my Yu family, see if I don’t break your legs!”
Yu Qianyan was berated before she could even react. Then, Yu Qishan glared at her fiercely, gave her a “loving” pat on the back of her head, and stormed out like a gust of wind.
Yu Qianyan stared blankly at the bed for a few seconds, then muttered subconsciously, “I haven’t invited Jian Chuan to the engagement party yet.”
Two seconds later, Yu Qianyan rolled over, pulled the quilt over herself, closed her eyes, and went to sleep.
“Hmm… did I forget something?”
“Whatever, I’ll deal with it when I get my communicator back tomorrow.”
