- Chapter 6 - Planning for Her, A Sudden Realization
“Then it’s settled. The day of the engagement,” Yu Qianyan paused, still feeling a sense of absurdity, as if hearing herself talk about getting engaged was not quite real.
“I’ll come pick you up that morning.”
Rong Shu nodded, “Alright. I’ll have my luggage packed and be waiting for you.”
“Actually…”
“What is it?”
After hesitating for a long time, Yu Qianyan decided to bring it up, “Actually, you don’t need to be so formal with me all the time. You can just call me by my name.”
Back at her sect, whenever those troublesome junior disciples needed something, they called her “Eldest Senior Sister.” When they didn’t, they called her whatever they pleased. Getting them to call her by her full name was a luxury. They’d call her “Big Goose,” “Big Bird,” or “Sister Sparrow,” and sometimes their Master would even join in on the nonsense.
Back then, Yu Qianyan never imagined that one day, she would be agonizing over such a simple matter of address.
Unexpectedly, upon hearing this, a mischievous glint appeared in Rong Shu’s eyes.
“I can’t.”
“Why not?” Yu Qianyan was confused. Could Rong Shu be this shy? If she were truly this reserved, it wasn’t something they couldn’t negotiate. At the very least, she could stop using the honorific “you” (nin) with her, as it felt completely unnatural.
“I’m afraid that if I call you by your name, you’ll tell me not to be formal with you, and then insist I call you ‘Miss Yu’ instead.”
Yu Qianyan froze. Only then did she realize she had been teased. She stared at Rong Shu for several seconds without saying a word.
Not until Rong Shu’s laughter subsided under her gaze did Yu Qianyan feign dissatisfaction and let out a soft “hmpf” through her nose, which immediately drew another burst of delighted laughter from Rong Shu.
Yu Qianyan joined in, watching with a slight sense of distraction as two small tiger teeth peeked out from the corners of Rong Shu’s mouth when she laughed.
They were truly adorable tiger teeth, sharp and petite. Inexplicably, they reminded Yu Qianyan of a tiny, vibrant green bamboo viper, proudly shaking its tail to show off its beauty to its companions.
The aircraft slowly began to decelerate, the Rong residence coming into view.
The atmosphere in the cabin, which had been so harmonious just a moment ago, vanished instantly, like clouds shattered by the passing aircraft.
Rong Shu lowered her eyes once more, pulling her expression back into a stone-like mask. Her heart was racing, and beneath the surface, where Yu Qianyan could not see, a tempest was brewing.
This was the second time!
Counting the shopping trip today, this was the second time she had gotten along so happily with Yu Qianyan!
Even when the other person hadn’t said much, she had somehow, unknowingly, let down all her guard and resentment, indulging herself in those fleeting moments of laughter.
Fake! It was all fake!
This was one of Yu Qianyan’s tactics!
Incredible, truly incredible. That brainless poison had actually learned such a sophisticated trick, nearly causing her to trip up and be deceived.
She couldn’t be this careless anymore. She had to stay on high alert.
After repeatedly brainwashing herself, Rong Shu ignored the strange sensation flickering in her heart, dismissing it as a side effect of this lowly Omega constitution, which made her maintain a lingering dependency on the Alpha who had permanently marked her.
An Alpha’s control over their Omega was no less potent than a controlled substance. Even if she had changed bodies and started over, she was eternally branded on a soul and spiritual level, like an inescapable shadow. Only the Omegas with the strongest willpower could rely solely on themselves to shake off this dual physiological and psychological influence and regain complete control of their emotions.
Before today, Rong Shu had always believed she was such an Omega. Yet now, she had been shaken for a moment by the sheer intensity of the shock.
But it was only for a moment.
As the aircraft came to a complete stop, Rong Shu’s mood settled entirely. She gave Yu Qianyan a cold nod, avoided her look of pity, and walked off the aircraft in silence.
Yu Qianyan was not surprised by Rong Shu’s sudden change in reaction. She attributed it all to the Rong family having too much influence on her. Otherwise, why would she be lifeless at home, cheerful when she went out, and then wilted again just as she was about to return home?
Looking at it this way, it was no wonder Rong Shu had agreed so quickly when she suggested moving out.
Perhaps this wasn’t a bad thing, after all? People from the Rong family certainly couldn’t just barge into the Yu residence to bully Rong Shu.
Yu Qianyan tried to recall Rong Shu’s life at the Rong family as depicted in the original book.
Unfortunately, as a minor character who didn’t have much screen time in the beginning and died shortly after becoming relevant in the latter half, there wasn’t much information about Rong Shu. After thinking hard for a long time, she could only come to the conclusion that “The Rong family is absolute trash.”
That was a conclusion she didn’t even need to recall to make.
What kind of normal Alpha, who cherished their Omega, would remarry and bring home the child of their lover less than three months after being widowed? What kind of good stepfather would treat his own young, newly-adult child like a bargaining chip, throwing her into someone else’s bed just to facilitate an ill-matched marriage?
Not to mention that after the wedding, Rong Xin had hooked up with the original Yu Qianyan at lightning speed, becoming an openly kept long-term mistress. The other Omegas of the Rong family had also used the original’s influence to marry into high-status families.
And…
If Yu Qianyan remembered correctly, according to Imperial law, although noble titles were hereditary, nobles who failed to achieve merit within three generations would have their titles downgraded by one level upon succession.
The Rong family’s title wasn’t high to begin with, and they had been mediocre for generations, dropping a level almost every time. The current head of the house was stuck at the very last of those “three generations.”
In other words, once the current head passed away, the successor would lose the title entirely unless they achieved a special level of merit, and the Rong family would be reduced to commoners, no different from any other average family in the capital with a bit of savings.
Looking at the incompetence of the Rong family’s Alphas, they couldn’t even manage a fifth-grade merit, let alone anything special—it was only because the Rong family’s status was low that the title of “Capital Planet’s Number One Scum” didn’t fall to the original owner.
Yet, in the original plot, after Rong Xin became pregnant, the head of the Rong family inexplicably achieved a third-grade merit, narrowly saving the family title. It was quite strange.
Yu Qianyan didn’t need to verify it to know that this was certainly Yu Qishan’s doing, perhaps out of consideration for the unborn child. The original owner certainly wouldn’t have had the ability to handle such trouble without anyone noticing.
So, it stood to reason that both Rong Shu and Rong Xin were merely chess pieces thrown out by the Rong family to preserve their title and firmly bind the original owner. It was no wonder the shrewd stepfather had brought Rong Xin, who was still a minor, out to charm her. He was terrified that Rong Shu wouldn’t be able to handle her, or that she would be too clever and unwilling to help them.
Thus, the fact that the heir to the Rong family was the stepfather’s biological Alpha son became a matter of course.
Suddenly, Yu Qianyan stiffened, realizing something terrifying.
Rong Shu had only just come of age!
According to the laws and customs of the Capital Planet, Alphas come of age at 24, and Omegas at 22. Marriage is only permitted after coming of age, and after marriage, Omegas are expected to focus on caring for their Alpha and children, ceasing their studies and work.
How could this be?
Yu Qianyan was 25 and still planning to study at the military academy. How could Rong Shu not go to school?
To better protect the personal safety of Omegas and to cultivate more virtuous and capable Omegas, the Capital Planet had established a school exclusively for them, jokingly referred to as the “Rose Garden.” Omegas who graduated from this school were more likely to secure a good marriage under equal conditions, and the school even helped recommend high-quality Alphas for their students to date.
Therefore, almost all Omegas took pride in attending the “Rose Garden,” where they would study until they were 25. Omegas in noble circles were all students of the Rose Garden.
Rong Shu should have been no exception.
However, although the Rose Garden had strict admission and management, dropping out was very easy. After all, not studying after marriage was an unwritten custom for Omegas, or rather, a mandatory rule to be observed.
She didn’t know if those inhumane people in the Rong family had already processed Rong Shu’s withdrawal, but in the original owner’s memories, Rong Shu rarely went out after marriage and never mentioned schooling. Of course, the original owner never cared about her life anyway.
So, should she let Rong Shu continue at this Omega-exclusive school?
Yu Qianyan felt that wasn’t quite right. The Omegas trained by that Rose Garden were all identically docile and obedient, and the curriculum seemed to revolve entirely around useless noble hobbies like cooking, flower arranging, and dancing.
This wasn’t cultivating students; it was mass-producing tools. Even the beast-taming sects in her cultivation world taught their spirit pets spells so they could cultivate on their own.
Then, should she let Rong Shu go to a different school?
Schools willing to accept Omegas were pitifully few. Yu Qianyan wanted to pick a good one for her but was afraid that Rong Shu would be bullied in a school mixed with Alphas and Betas.
After mulling it over, Yu Qianyan glanced at her own reflection in the cabin door and had a sudden realization.
Why not have Rong Shu come to the military academy with her?
If Yu Qishan could help the Rong family preserve their title, wouldn’t it be easy enough to squeeze one Omega into the military academy?
At worst, she would just carry more suppressants, bring a defensive collar, and stagger their class schedules. She could even accompany Rong Shu to class to prevent her from being bullied.
Yu Qianyan was used to taking care of her fellow disciples. Since she had already included Rong Shu in her “inner circle,” she couldn’t help but carefully plan for her.
When the time came, she would convince Yu Qishan by using the excuse of building their relationship and personally taking care of her. If that didn’t work, she’d use the original owner’s method of throwing a tantrum, or pester her like her junior disciples used to do.
Yu Qishan should agree… right?
Yu Qianyan narrowed her eyes coldly. Mother must agree.
Yu Qianyan became impatient, urging the pilot to proceed at full speed and get home quickly. She was determined to seize the time and successfully convince Yu Qishan within these next few days. Once Rong Shu’s enrollment was secured, she would break the good news to her.
Yu Qianyan thought to herself that she could present this as a wedding gift; she hoped Rong Shu would like it.
