- Chapter 22 - Are You Flirting? The Other Party Retracted Their Attempt
This was a bizarre, iridescent deep sea.
Rong Shu felt like a soft ball of light, or perhaps a sturdy bubble. She was some round, weightless thing drifting in this deep sea, carried along by the currents.
Although it was called the deep sea, there was nothing but water here, a vast and boundless expanse. There were no fish, no aquatic plants, and no gravel, just a bleak monotony.
Yet, Rong Shu felt remarkably at ease in this expanse.
She could feel the vibrations of the water flowing over her and the faint warmth of sunlight penetrating from far above. Believing she could change her shape, she sprouted hands. Believing she could swim, she used those new limbs to propel herself forward.
Eventually, Rong Shu even transformed into a mermaid, spinning, leaping, and darting about with reckless abandon, having the time of her life.
Suddenly, the world shuddered violently. Everything blurred into strange, indistinct patches of color. Her ears caught various sounds, chaotic and muffled at first, but then they grew clearer while the scene before her became increasingly hazy until it dissolved into a void of white.
Deprived of her vision, Rong Shu strained to listen, attempting to identify the sounds drifting from unknown origins.
Birds flapped their wings with powerful strokes.
A cat leaped onto a branch, causing it to creak under its weight, while the leaves rustled as if applauding the perfect jump.
A soft “click” resonated with rhythmic precision, like an insect waving its claws, perhaps hunting or defending itself. Rong Shu was entranced, lost in this marvelous world where everything was so vivid and fascinating.
She felt as though she had transformed into a massive tree, her roots extending outward, turning everywhere they reached into her playground and territory. She could perceive everything, sense everything, and control everything. Her five senses no longer mattered, for with these magical roots, she could communicate with heaven and earth and understand the cycle of life and death.
Her self-confidence swelled in an instant, and her heart felt incredibly open. The suffering that had once left her agonizing and tossing in bed became nothing more than fleeting dust. She even found it strange, wondering why she had been so bothered by such trivial matters in the past.
She was so powerful and beautiful, destined to enjoy the very best of everything.
However, this epiphany was fleeting. The noises coming from all around grew louder and more chaotic, causing a headache, and the world began to shake, flipping upside down until it became a ruin with no end in sight.
Rong Shu did not like this rapidly collapsing world. She retracted all of her roots and feelers in an instant, returning to the shape of a light orb, and used every ounce of her strength to rush upward, attempting to escape it all.
She succeeded.
After finishing her call with Yu Qishan, Yu Qianyan had barely sat back down on the edge of the bed when she noticed Rong Shu’s eyelids fluttering, as if she were struggling to wake. She quickly pressed the bedside emergency button to alert the doctor.
Sure enough, within seconds, Rong Shu snapped her eyes open. Her gaze was dazed for only a moment before she began to look around in confusion. Only after scanning her surroundings did she finally lock eyes with Yu Qianyan’s concerned gaze.
“You’re awake? How do you feel?”
Rong Shu’s throat was bone-dry, as if someone had stuffed a whole desert down there while she slept. She could not utter a single word.
Yu Qianyan raised the head of the bed at the right moment and brought her warm water.
Rong Shu did not stand on ceremony. She desperately wanted to know what had happened to her and vaguely sensed that something extraordinary had changed within her body. She took the water from Yu Qianyan’s hand and drank it quickly in large gulps, nearly choking herself.
After finishing the water, she cleared her throat, but when she spoke, her voice was still hoarsely strange, making her frown even to her own ears.
Yu Qianyan, however, did not seem to mind at all, as if Rong Shu’s voice still sounded as crisp and sweet as a lark. Her expression remained unchanged, and there was even a faint smile at the corners of her mouth.
After observing this, Rong Shu felt slightly relieved and asked, “How long have I been asleep?”
“Three days and three nights. If you hadn’t woken up soon, I was afraid your muscles would have started to atrophy from lying still,” Yu Qianyan teased. Beneath her eyes, there was a faint layer of bruised darkness.
Rong Shu was stunned for a moment. “Three days… Have you been guarding me this whole time?”
“Of course. Secondary differentiation is not entirely safe. Every moment of physical reconstruction carries the risk of collapse, and you couldn’t be left alone. Fortunately, you’ve woken up now, which means the secondary differentiation has successfully concluded. There’s nothing to worry about anymore.”
Yu Qianyan possessed a double-S grade constitution, so a few days without sleep would not affect her much. Rong Shu knew this, but her heart still gave a sharp tug. It didn’t hurt, but it felt numb, sore, and she felt a sense of loss for what to do.
She bit her lower lip, shifted her gaze to avoid looking at her, and turned the conversation to what had happened over the past few days.
The change of topic was not exactly abrupt, though it wasn’t entirely natural either. Fortunately, Yu Qianyan did not mind, and she meticulously told Rong Shu everything that had transpired over the past three days.
In truth, nothing major had happened.
After Rong Shu fell asleep, Yu Qianyan thought it best to inform Yu Qishan, so she placed a call.
To her surprise, Yu Qishan’s reaction was more cautious than delighted. She immediately arranged for people to rush Yu Qianyan and Rong Shu to the Yu family’s private hospital with the utmost urgency, selecting the most reliable and trusted doctors. They claimed outwardly that Rong Shu was in poor health and needed to rest, refusing all visitors, even keeping Nanny Li in the dark.
As for Boss He, Yu Qishan had negotiated with everyone from the boss to the shop assistants, using both threats and incentives to ensure that news of Rong Shu’s secondary differentiation would never leak out.
Yu Qianyan was quite puzzled by this, but seeing how cautiously Yu Qishan was handling it, she sensed there were secrets involved that neither she nor the original body had known about. She decided to simply cooperate without asking further questions.
Since Rong Shu was still unconscious and Yu Qianyan was worried, she simply didn’t return to the Yu residence and stayed at the hospital to accompany her, saving herself from unnecessary trouble.
Yu Qishan was delighted to hear this and even complimented Yu Qianyan for being a good daughter, saying she had grown up and was becoming sensible. She also promised to coordinate with Nanny Li regarding her lessons, so Yu Qianyan didn’t need to worry.
Because of Yu Qishan’s attitude, when Yu Qianyan told Rong Shu about these events, she inevitably urged her not to let anything slip to outsiders.
Rong Shu did not quite understand Yu Qishan’s reaction either. However, having lived through her past life, especially having worked with Xiong Weian and the others to bring down the Yu family—she knew a little more than Yu Qianyan, so she had a few guesses in mind and did not raise any objections.
Seeing that Rong Shu was just lost in thought and not dissatisfied at all, Yu Qianyan couldn’t help but look at her a few more times, thinking to herself that Rong Shu was indeed exceptionally intelligent and understanding.
Not to mention others, but even Yu Qianyan herself, if she had lived a life like Rong Shu’s—talented but living in mediocrity, mother dead early, bullied by stepmother and stepsisters, betrayed and schemed against by family, pushed into a fire pit for the sake of wealth, and finally overturning the situation—might have felt resentful if she couldn’t show off a bit to vent her anger.
Rong Shu was truly kind-hearted and beautiful, she couldn’t be better.
So when Rong Shu finally returned to her senses, she was met with Yu Qianyan’s admiring and moved gaze, leaving her completely baffled.
But this wasn’t the time to worry about that. Yu Qianyan was fickle and hard to fathom; if she really argued with her, she might just end up making herself angry again.
“Have you done the grade assessment yet?”
“Not yet. The assessment takes a long time, and I wasn’t at ease going while you hadn’t woken up. But didn’t you want to do a compatibility test? We can do them together.”
Rong Shu nodded. “That works. When are we going?”
Yu Qianyan tucked the blanket in for her. “I’ve just called the doctor. Let’s do the checkup after you’ve had your physical examination and we’re sure there are no problems.”
Having survived three days, waiting a little longer naturally meant nothing. Rong Shu lay peacefully in bed, moving her limbs slightly. The blanket would bulge into little bumps as she twisted underneath, making Yu Qianyan’s hands itch, wanting to play a real-life game of Whac-A-Mole.
The examination naturally showed no problems. Rong Shu could be said to be healthier than ever before. Especially after the initial period of chaos upon waking, she felt full of energy, as robust as a young calf—even Yu Qianyan would be no match for her. Confident, she pulled Yu Qianyan along to do their respective assessments.
There were many items to check, and given Rong Shu’s special situation, every test was repeated twice to ensure accuracy, which naturally made her finish much later than Yu Qianyan.
By the time she returned to the ward, Yu Qianyan had already returned and was holding a brochure, reading through it.
“What are you looking at?”
“Nothing, just a hospital brochure.” Yu Qianyan looked up and smiled at her, casually closing the brochure and sitting on it, vividly illustrating what it means to be guilty of a cover-up.
Rong Shu raised an eyebrow. Relying on her newfound, ox-like strength, she strolled over and sat down beside Yu Qianyan, then caught her off guard and gave her a hard shove, trying to flip the annoying Alpha over like a bulldozer.
But Yu Qianyan didn’t budge an inch.
Yu Qianyan asked in confusion, “Sorry, but may I ask if you are flirting?”
