Future's First Marriage, Later Love - Chapter 19
Chapter 19
The partners of the men in the military were all beauties and handsome men; his looks seemed somewhat unsatisfactory in comparison, and his husband happened to be Pollack, one of the two most outstanding members of the Ten Generals.
However, Agnes clearly underestimated Mai Hai’s psychological resilience. Just because Mai Hai looked so weak on the outside, he simply looked at them with a beaming smile, greeting them one by one. In his heart, he thought: What even is “beauty”? Can you eat it?
Agnes watched Mai Hai’s facial expressions closely, not letting even a blink escape her notice, but to her frustration, she couldn’t find a single trace of sadness in him.
Since that move failed, Agnes had a backup plan. A few of the other partners of the Ten Generals also couldn’t stand Mai Hai, so they conspired with Agnes. They had heard that General Pollack’s partner couldn’t handle alcohol.
Agnes was the first to pick up a glass of high-purity, entirely red cocktail and hand it to Mai Hai. Several people around them watched with expressions of anticipation for a good show, saying, “This is the ‘Red Giant’ we specially prepared for you.”
From space, the surface of the Giant Planet looked completely fiery red; this cocktail, inspired by the planet’s appearance, was something Mai Hai had seen Spinai mix at Blues. Since meeting Spinai, every time he mixed a cocktail, he would specially make a matching glass of juice for Mai Hai.
The alcohol concentration of this drink was very high. Mai Hai said to Agnes with difficulty, “I’m really sorry, I’m allergic to alcohol.”
Agnes, however, put on an air of disbelief and said coquettishly, “Are you just not giving me face?”
This was a total trap. Mai Hai had no choice but to take it. He took a tiny sip and was about to set the glass down.
Agnes was quick and blocked him, saying, “That won’t do!”
“Exactly, exactly,” several people nearby echoed.
Mai Hai was speechless. It seemed they were determined to see him make a fool of himself today. In that case, he’d just go for it. Anyway, right now he was representing a certain someone’s partner, not himself; if he made a scene, it had nothing to do with him… right? Once you get past the psychological barrier, many things become easier. To everyone’s surprise, he tilted his head back and drained the entire glass in one go.
Pollack walked in just in time to see this. Mai Hai had just downed a large glass of Red Giant. He lunged forward, snatched the glass from Mai Hai’s hand, and gave Agnes a fierce glare before turning to ask Mai Hai, “Are you alright?”
Mai Hai pulled on Pollack’s ear with a beaming smile, leaning in to kiss him, but Pollack dodged. He leaned down and scooped Mai Hai up in a princess carry, then spoke to Agnes with polite detachment: “I’m sorry, my partner has caused you trouble.”
Agnes wanted to call out to Pollack, but she was held back by the person next to her. They all knew Pollack’s temper; at this moment, he was only constrained by his status from acting out. Otherwise, they wouldn’t even know how they died. Disrespecting Mai Hai was equivalent to disrespecting Pollack himself.
In some ways, Pollack’s way of thinking was similar to ancient creatures—straight lines only.
Anyway, Pollack carried the red-faced Mai Hai, who was completely drunk after one glass of “holy water,” out the front door. He pulled out his communicator and called Chris: “Hey, I’ll be a bit late getting there.”
“What’s wrong?” Chris asked with some concern. “Did something happen to Mai Hai? You just ran back in a hurry because you said you forgot to give him the house sensor card…”
Pollack said in a rather poor tone, “Yeah, luckily I forgot to give it to him.”
“Mm, then hurry up and get him home and get over here,” Chris said understandingly.
After agreeing, Pollack hailed a small spaceship while carrying Mai Hai horizontally. In the ship, Mai Hai kept “laying hands” on Pollack. The uncle driving the ship said to Pollack with a smile, “You two really have a great relationship.”
Hearing this, Pollack coughed awkwardly, his eyes darting around randomly.
On the other hand, Mai Hai, sleeping in Pollack’s arms, had no idea what shame was. He kept pulling on Pollack for a kiss, making Pollack’s face turn from red to purple, and finally from purple to black. The driver’s uncle kept covering his mouth and laughing in the front, saying things like “back in my day…”
It was with great effort that Pollack finally got the drunkenly transformed Mai Hai onto the bed. Mai Hai was still restless, constantly shouting that he was hot and tugging at his collar. Looking at Mai Hai on the bed, Pollack suddenly found him very charming for a moment, making his own mouth feel a bit dry…
But with a mission at hand, he could only force himself to act like a wooden statue. He stripped Mai Hai down to just a pair of small boxers, tucked him in, and then opened the door to go downstairs and leave.
…
Three Simple Rules
By the time Pollack arrived, everyone was waiting for him. Facing the teasing gazes of the crowd, he gave Chris a fierce glare. Chris looked back innocently, as if he had no idea what was going on. Pollack could do nothing about him and simply said coldly to the group: “Sorry I’m late.”
Mai Hai slept from the previous night until the sun was high the next day before waking up in a daze. He sat up with some effort and looked around, finding it exceptionally quiet. Then, his brain began to rewind. He remembered last night: being surrounded by the crowd, then being forced by that “whatever-Agnes” to drink a glass of Red Giant. Immediately after, his body seemed to have a chemical reaction. In his blurriness, he thought he saw Pollack…
Mai Hai thought that if things followed that trend, the person who brought him back must have been Pollack! At this thought, he instinctively pulled back the quilt to look. He had been stripped quite thoroughly, but it seemed nothing had happened. It made sense; he was stiff and muscular—not much “hand-feel” to hold—plus he was someone who wasn’t much to look at.
Leaping from the bed and thinking Pollack wouldn’t be back from his mission so soon, Mai Hai casually tied a towel around his waist and headed downstairs shirtless, intending to find some food to appease his stomach. However, just as he reached the ground floor, he saw Pollack, Kedexin, and Chris push the door open and enter. Everyone stared in unison at Mai Hai’s exposed, pale skin.
Pollack was the first to recover. Without turning back, he snapped in an unfriendly tone, “Make yourselves at home.”
With lightning speed, he lunged forward, grabbed Mai Hai’s hand, and dragged him upstairs, straight into the bedroom. With a bang, he shut the door. He looked at Mai Hai and said, “Put some clothes on.”
“What’s wrong?” Mai Hai looked at Pollack strangely, not understanding why he was throwing another tantrum. He really was like a child.
Pollack couldn’t believe that Mai Hai, who was clearly in the wrong, had the nerve to question him. Feeling very annoyed, he said, “Do you like showing yourself off to others that much?”
“Are you angry?” Mai Hai asked tentatively, laughing secretly in his heart. So Pollack cared about this. Although he didn’t quite understand—after all, he figured whatever he had, they had too, so looking wouldn’t hurt anything.
But Pollack clearly didn’t think that way. In their view, a partner’s body shouldn’t be casually shown to others. Although he knew today’s incident was purely an accident, just thinking about Chris and Kedexin—especially Kedexin seeing Mai Hai’s body—made him feel uncomfortable all over.
By the time Mai Hai finally got dressed, Pollack went downstairs with him, still looking sour. Chris shot a look at Kedexin, and they exchanged silent glances. Chris’s look meant: See, see? You’ve got no chance. Little Spinach’s possessiveness over Mai Hai is so strong.
Kedexin nodded with a bit of disappointment. He really did like Mai Hai, but one does not mess with a friend’s wife.
Mai Hai looked at Chris and Kedexin and asked with a smile, “You guys haven’t slept all night, have you? I’ll go make whatever you’d like to eat.”
The incident from a moment ago had already been cast into outer space by him. Pollack gave a sour snort, thinking to himself that Mai Hai didn’t even ask what he wanted to eat. He poked the tank irritably with his finger. The little jellyfish swam over happily, and only then did Pollack’s mood improve slightly as he watched them.
Mai Hai watched Pollack’s back with amusement. He hadn’t missed that cold snort. He really wondered if Pollack was only like this…
