- Chapter 20 - Scene-Induced Sorrow - Since Ancient Times
“If you’re unhappy, we don’t have to come back here anymore. We can just return to our home,” Fu Chenyan gently stroked the girl’s hair, his gaze filled with tenderness and affection.
“Okay.”
“Rest for a while. I’ll wake you when we get home.”
Li Muli closed her eyes, feigning sleep. The discarded music manuscripts, Li Muqing with her starry dreams, the ambitious Wu Zhuyi sooner or later, they would all reveal their true colors.
Just wait and see.
What she wanted most now was to uncover the truth about everything about her family background, about her death.
Perhaps, her death in her previous life was thanks to Tan Yueli and Wu Zhuyi. When the truth came to light, no one would escape unscathed.
Exhausted, the reality she had avoided for so long was slowly being unveiled. Lost in her chaotic thoughts, she eventually drifted off to sleep.
A jumble of dreams intertwined randomly past life, present life, intricate and tangled, wrapping around her like a mess of threads.
“Fu Chenyan, why didn’t you come to see me even once?”
“Was she really that important?” the sleeping girl murmured incessantly.
“Baby, wake up.” Hearing the girl’s sleep-talking, Fu Chenyan gently patted her back.
Li Muli jolted awake, and upon seeing the person before her, she threw her arms around his neck. “Fu Chenyan, you finally came.”
“I’m here, baby.” The man continued to pat her back, comforting her in a soft voice.
Gradually, Li Muli’s mind cleared, and she realized that the her in this moment was not the her from the dream, and the man before her was not the man from the dream either.
The chaotic mess of the dream had left her momentarily disoriented.
The her in the dream would never have received such gentleness from him.
The her in the dream had waited for him for so long. Yet, in the end, she was disappointed.
She never got to see him one last time.
She finally admitted it he didn’t love her.
Scene-induced sorrow since ancient times.
Lately, she had been frequently recalling her past life, and most of the time, it brought her little joy.
She finally had to admit that sometimes she blamed him. Whenever her heart ached for her past self, she still held it against him.
She couldn’t let go of the resentment.
She thought to herself: What a sensitive and contradictory person I am. The one moving forward is me, and the one retreating is also me. The one who wants to make things work with him is me, and the one blaming him is also me.
She loved him, yet she couldn’t help but hold it against him.
She felt trapped in a cage of her own making, tormented by moving forward and reluctant to step back.
Fu Chenyan watched the conflict and pain in the girl’s eyes, and his heart grew unsettled. She was right in front of him, yet he couldn’t grasp her.
He had heard her sleep-talking and seen the joy in her eyes when she first saw him, only for it to turn cold once she came to her senses.
It was as if the person she had been waiting for wasn’t him.
But she had clearly called out his name.
He was certain she wouldn’t share her secrets with him.
Fu Chenyan pulled the girl into his embrace, soothing her softly. “It was just a nightmare, baby.”
Li Muli leaned against his chest and nodded gently.
She seemed like a fragile doll, scarred and battered.
“Take me to the film set. I took half the morning off,” Li Muli said after a long pause.
Fu Chenyan nodded. “Okay.”
Li Muli closed her eyes. She urgently needed to distract herself, to keep from being trapped in her struggles.
She didn’t want her past life to affect their relationship.
It wouldn’t be fair to either of them in this life.
“Sweetheart, if I’ve done anything wrong, you have to tell me. You can’t just ignore me,” Fu Chenyan said, sounding aggrieved.
Li Muli curled her lips into a smile. “Alright, I won’t ignore you.”
Seeing the girl finally smile, Fu Chenyan felt a little more at ease. His girl responded better to softness than harshness.
Such a kind-hearted young lady even when she was wronged, she couldn’t bear to make others sad. His precious darling deserved to be happy always.
“I’m here! Be careful on your way back,” Li Muli waved at the man as she got out of the car.
The man nodded but didn’t leave, watching from afar as the girl’s figure grew smaller and smaller in the distance.
Suddenly, the girl dashed back, her beautiful eyes sparkling with a playful smile. “Fu Chenyan, lower your head.”
Rising on her tiptoes, she leaned through the window and kissed his lips. “A farewell kiss. Work hard, okay”
She couldn’t bear to see such a confident man sitting there pitifully, like a puppy abandoned by its owner.
After saying that, she ran off again. Fu Chenyan chuckled softly. Girls were such fickle creatures, but his darling was just so incredibly adorable.
“Muli, you’re here,” Zhuang Lin greeted, standing up as she saw the newcomer.
She had already received word earlier that Li Muli would arrive at noon.
Li Muli nodded. “Sister Zhuang, what’s the plan after this drama wraps up?”
“For now, we’ve booked a magazine shoot and an advertisement. Once the results of this drama are out, we should get even better scripts.”
“Okay.”
“By the way, there’s a dating show that invited you. After your official announcement online, you gained a ton of fans. Lots of people want to see a handsome guy and a beautiful girl fall in love. What do you think?”
“Turn it down. Fu Chenyan wouldn’t agree.”
“True enough. President Fu is the kind of man even news outlets can’t get an interview with.”
“Yeah. How’s Tang Tang doing?” Li Muli asked casually.
“Ugh, don’t even mention it. Scandals keep popping up online, one after another, and they’re all solid evidence.”
“Wow, last night’s video of one woman and five men went viral. A pure little flower on the surface, but wild behind the scenes.”
“All her endorsements have been terminated. When the wall starts to crumble, everyone gives it a push. Her assistant even came forward with a bunch of shocking revelations it’s truly eye-opening.”
“The big shot is indeed a big shot. Tsk tsk tsk, woman, your golden thigh is blinding my eyes.”
When women get into gossip, age doesn’t matter.
Li Muli smiled faintly, her mood instantly lifting.
She never considered herself a saint she believed in repaying every slight, even a thousand times over, for it to be fair.
Suddenly, she thought, if only Tan Yueli would return sooner. Once the battle was over, everything would settle.
If it really was her, turning herself into a murderer for the sake of a man, how pitiful and pathetic.
And utterly despicable.
A growl from her stomach broke the quiet atmosphere. Zhuang Lin glanced at the culprit. “Did President Fu not feed you?”
Li Muli looked at her pitifully. “Sister Zhuang, hungry, food.”
Zhuang Lin rolled her eyes, exasperated. “Come on, you’re President Fu’s girlfriend.”
“Food, food.”
“I’ve ordered takeout. Eat less if you gain weight, I won’t let you off.”
“Thank you, beautiful and kind Sister Zhuang,” Li Muli said sweetly.
Zhuang Lin waved her off dismissively. “Go on, get out of here.”
“But President Fu always wants me to stay close to him, you know?”
Zhuang Lin: Are you for real?
Other agents: You can date, just don’t get caught.
Her: Even if you’re caught, it’s fine someone will handle it. And I have to endure dog food from time to time.
“Are you two living together?”
Li Muli: ? How did her agent piece together the truth from such subtle clues?
Li Muli rubbed the back of her head and nodded.
“Even if it’s you, President Fu, you have to take precautions. I don’t want the child I’ve raised with such care to disappear too soon.”
“Understood”
